It was a great opening race for Jenson Button and the McLaren team with first and third places. The British team now occupy favouritism for the Constructors' Championship and look set to play a big role in the Drivers' competition...

Jenson Button is [3.65] second favourite for the F1 Drivers' Championship after winning the season opener in Melbourne.

Starting second on the grid, the British driver overtook team-mate Lewis Hamilton at the first corner and drove on to an untroubled victory. Hamilton finished third, the victim of unlucky timing when the safety car was deployed which allowed Sebastian Vettel to gain vital seconds and eventually force himself between the McLaren drivers on the podium.

At [3.65] Button, backed at [13.0] to win the title, is now slightly shorter than McLaren rival Hamilton ([4.0]). Vettel retains favouritism at [3.05] but it's some way off his market low of [1.99]. Button finished runner-up to Vettel in last year's Championship.

McLaren's strong showing in Melbourne has also seen them assume favouritism in the Constructors' Championship, where they can be backed at [1.76]. Red Bull, for whom Mark Webber was fourth are available to back at [2.56].

The first grand prix of the season takes place in Melbourne and McLaren have set down a marker for the campaign by taking the front two places on the grid. James Frankland can't see anyone other than Lewis or Jenson...

Fairyhouse Result: Minsk only second on hurdling debut

Minsk could only manage to finish second on his hurdling debut at Fairyhouse...

The Dessie Hughes-trained four-year-old had been heading the market for the Triumph Hurdle for some time, having easily won the Irish Cesarewitch last year, but could only get within a neck of eventual winner Burrenbridge Lad. Bat Masterson finished close-up in third, having previously won at Naas.

Minsk is now available to back at [20.0] for the Triumph, with Kempton winner Baby Mix becoming the new market leader at [7.4].

The Tom George-trained four-year-old made a most impressive British debut, beating Hinterland at Cheltenham, before disappointing back at that track last month.

However, Baby Mix ran out a fairly ready winner of Kempton's Adonis Hurdle, beating Sadler's Risk and Dark and Dangerous with the Paul Nicholls-trained Dildar looking well-held when unseating Ruby Walsh at the final flight.

Sadler's Risk can be backed at [10.5] for the Triumph, whilst Dildar has drifted to [46.0].

Ivory Coast v Burkina Faso: Favourites to grab a second win

African Cup Of Nations RSS / / 25 January 2012 / Leave a Comment

Dider Drogba scored the winner in Ivory Coast's opening game

Dider Drogba scored the winner in Ivory Coast's opening game

Burkina Faso's opening performance and Ivory Coast’s immense attacking potential (their squad contains Gervinho, Max Gradel, Seydou Doumbia, Salomon Kalou and Yaya Toure) makes over 2.5 goals a worthwhile option.

James Eastham believes Ivory Coast's second group game will be a high-scoring encounter.

Ivory Coast v Burkina Faso, 19:00 GMT, Match Odds: Ivory Coast [1.49], Burkina Faso [9.2], The Draw [4.4].

Ivory Coast failed to live up to expectations in managing only a 1-0 victory over Sudan last Sunday, but how often do tournament favourites earn spectacular opening-day wins? If tournaments are all about peaking at the right time, there was enough in The Elephants' performance to suggest there's plenty more to come from them.

Ivory Coast will be confident going into the game thanks to those 3pts already in the bag (you can read a report of their win here). In contrast, Burkina Faso are under pressure having lost 2-1 to Angola in their opening game. The highlight of their match was Alain Traore's 25-yard free-kick, but some of their defending was below-par, suggesting Ivory Coast will get plenty of scoring opportunities if they pick their moments carefully.

Burkina's performance and Ivory Coast's immense attacking potential (Drogba scored the winning goal over Sudan and their squad also contains Gervinho, Max Gradel, Seydou Doumbia, Salomon Kalou and Yaya Toure) makes over 2.5 goals a worthwhile option. At some point in the match, Burkina Faso will have to attack as Ivory Coast and Angola already have a win each and they must close the gap. Therefore I expect good scoring opportunities at both ends - and while Ivory Coast's attacking options are superior, Traore and Rennes winger Jonathan Pitroipa both have the ability to unlock the favourites' defence.

Over 2.5 Goals at [2.32] is my main pick on the game, and I wouldn't talk anybody out of backing Ivory Coast to collect 3pts in order to guarantee their safe passage to the knockout phase. The tournament favourites are [1.49] to win the match, so Ivory Coast -1.0 Asian handicap at [1.83] is an alternative.

An alternative to the Over 2.5 Goals bet is to back both teams to score at [2.22]. With this bet, you're covering the 1-1 draw.

Best Bet: Ivory Coast v Burkina Faso Over 2.5 Goals @ [2.32].
Other Recommended Bet: Ivory Coast -1.0 Asian Handicap @ [1.83].

Michael Vaughan: Why I'm laying the draw in the Second Test

Pakistan v England RSS / / 24 January 2012 / Leave a Comment

Run machine. Jonathan Trott looks set to cash in this time.

Run machine. Jonathan Trott looks set to cash in this time.

"This England team don’t do boring because they’ve become accustomed to playing an aggressive brand of cricket. That’s why they’ve been entertaining to watch since Andy Flower took over."

All the talk is of mountains of runs on a flat pitch but England are rarely involved in draws and there's a great chance we'll get another result. If there are runs to be scored, expect Jonathan Trott to be amongst them, says Michael Vaughan.

A cricket dressing room is a great place to be in when you're winning but a pretty miserable one when you've just been hammered. There will have been plenty of soul-searching amongst the England players as to what went wrong and plenty of work done by analysts and other background staff into why their batting line-up capitulated not once, but twice. No prizes for guessing which Pakistan bowler will have been the subject of the greatest amount of analysis. If England don't play Saeed Ajmal a lot better than they did in the First Test they're in big trouble but hopefully all this fancy technical equipment will help them work out where they went wrong last time.

Chris Tremlett isn't fully fit so will miss out, although I suspect the Surrey paceman wouldn't have played anyway, even if he was 100%. This will be a pretty flat pitch here in Abu Dhabi and that's not really the sort of track where he's dangerous. All the talk has been of Monty Panesar being brought in to help Graeme Swann with spinning duties but I'm not sure that's the way forward. There should be some cracks emerging and a some rough areas to aim at on days four and five but during the first three days you need to put pressure on the batsmen by either generating your own spin or varying the pace at which you're bowling. I'm not sure Monty will be a huge threat in those conditions and I'd actually go with Graham Onions instead.

It's been a while since we last saw the Durham man in action but this may just be his sort of pitch. We know there's unlikely to be much swing assisting the bowlers and the pitch may have just that little bit more bounce than the one in Dubai but there's still not much chance of wickets falling to short-pitched deliveries. And this might just be where Onions comes into the equation, bowling stump-to-stump deliveries. The DRS was prominent in the First Test and if you bowl straight enough on the Abu Dhabi wicket and hit the pads, that may just be the best chance you have of taking wickets.

As regards the batters, Eoin Morgan is probably the only player whose place may be in doubt but dropping him just because Ravi Bopara can bowl would be rash. And this England management team don't do rash.

The Betfair market suggests a draw (2.2) is on the cards. The reason for that is that both of the two matches played here before did end in high-scoring draws. But we should remember that when Pakistan drew with Sri Lanka late last year, the latter needed a double century from the great Kumar Sangakarra to avoid defeat because Pakistan pretty much had them on the ropes.

I'm laying the draw at [2.2]. Over the past few years England have played in all manner of conditions and very rarely do their matches end up in boring draws. OK, so there was the First Test of the 2010/11 Ashes series in Adelaide but (excluding two against Sri Lanka last summer where a huge amount of play was lost to rain) the stalemates have been thrilling draws - Panesar and James Anderson batting out the last few overs at Cardiff, Onions out in South Africa and the West Indies tail (twice in the series) doing the same with just one wicket in hand in the Caribbean, the last time England lost a Test series.

This England team don't do boring because they've become accustomed to playing an aggressive brand of cricket. That's why they've been entertaining to watch since Andy Flower took over. If anything, Pakistan are the more likelier side to go on and win the match for two good reasons: I can't see England scoring 550-plus to put themselves in a wining position and Pakistan (3.8) look better suited to taking 20 wickets on this pitch. But England are capable of winning because they've developed that sort of winning habit so I'd rather cover both bases by laying the draw than just backing Pakistan.

For England first innings top batsman honours, it has to be Jonathan Trott. He looked really good in the second innings and was picking Ajmal before getting out to an uncharacteristically careless shot off the bowling of Umar Gul. That was just a lapse in concentration because I think Trott was on for a big score and he's worth backing at [5.0] to build on a good start and pile on the runs.

My last tip for the match is that a bowler will take five wickets in an innings. Ajmal took seven in the first innings of the First Test and both Gul and Graeme Swann took four so there's a good chance that it will happen again. Ajmal is the most likely player to do it but there are plenty of others who can get on a roll and with the wicket likely to get considerably worse on days four and five, there's a good chance for someone to really cash in.

3 pts lay the draw at [2.2].
2 pts Back Jonathan Trott to be England first innings top batsman @ [5.0]
2 pts Back a bowler to take five wickets in an innings @ [1.7]

Jason Shows No Mercier on Way to Second Bracelet

World Series of Poker 2011 RSS / Matthew Pitt / 23 June 2011 / Leave a Comment

Mercier collects his second bracelet (Photo credit: PokerNews.com)

Mercier collects his second bracelet (Photo credit: PokerNews.com)

Jason Mercier is widely regarded as one of the best poker tournament players in the world and he has added extra weight to this statement by taking down his second World Series of Poker event, the inaugural $5,000 Pot Limit Omaha Six-Handed tournament.

Mercier exploded onto the live poker scene back in 2008 when an outright win in the EPT San Remo Main Event, which incidentally was his first major live cash, saw him walk away with €869,000. He cashed a further seven times during the year including making the final table of EPT Barcelona Main Event, the £5,000 Pot Limit Omaha tournament at the WSOPE and an outright win in the £20,000 High Roller event at the European Poker Championships. By the time 2008 had come to an end he had won almost $2,800,000.

He proved that his success was not just a flash in a pan and during 2009 he won more than $1,300,000 from live tournaments and nearly $1,060,000 in 2010 and thanks to this latest in a long line of victories, Mercier has already earned close to $1,158,000 in the first half of this year.

Mercier always seems to do well at the WSOP, having cashed at least four times at each of the series since 2008 if you include the WSOPE. In 2009 he won his first bracelet in a $1,500 Pot Limit Omaha event and this win in the $5,000 event was his fourth cash of the 20111 WSOP and was made all the more impressive by the fact it was quite possibly one of the toughest fields ever assembled.

He started the third and final day fifth in chips but got off to a great start when he eliminated both Peter Jetten and Dave "Devilfish" Ulliott in the same hand to take his stack past the 1,200,000 mark. In the hand Ulliott made it 25,000 to play from the button, Jetten three-bet to 110,000 in the small blind and both Mercier (big blind) and Ulliott made the calls. The dealer spread the 2d-Jd-8s flop and Jetten wasted no time in open-shoving for the rest of his stack. Mercier followed suit and Ulliott almost beat them all into the pot, a three way all in with Mercier covering his opponents.

Mercier: Qd-9d-Tc-6c (open-ended straight draw and flush draw)
Jetten: Ah-Ac-9s-5c (a pair of aces)
Ulliott: Jc-Jh-7d-7h (top set)

The dealer burned a card and put out the Qc on the turn, completing a straight for Mercier and leaving Jetten drawing dead but if the board paired Ulliot would have tripled up. But alas the river was the 4c, which did not please Ulliott who called Mercier, "the luckiest f****ng mother-f***er alive!" as he left the table. Mr Ulliott obviously needs to check out a poker odds calculator as Mercier was actually a narrow 48.44 to 46.66% favourite over Ulliott in the hand with Jetten holding the remaining 4.89% equity.

A chipped up Mercier is a dangerous opponent, a chipped up Mercier who is running well is almost impossible to play against so it was no surprise that as the players were gradually being eliminated it was he who found himself heads up against Hans Winzeler for the bracelet. It was quite an uneven match, with Winzeler having only $70,000 in live tournament winnings compared to Mercier's $5,700,000 so once Mercier snatched the chip lead there never looked like any other result apart from a victory for the Florida resident.

The final hand came around 90 minutes into heads up and saw Mercier raise to 160,000 preflop and then call Winzeler's three-bet to 480,000. The flop came down 9d-4s-3d, Mercier bet 90,000, Winzeler potted all-in and Mericer quickly called.

Mercier: Qc-6c-5d-3s
Winzeler: Ac-Kc-Kd-Js

Winzeler held an overpair but was actually slightly behind in the hand in terms of equity due to the nature of Omaha and the fact Mercier held a pair and an open-ended straight draw. None of Mercier's outs landed on the turn as it was the Tc but the 7h on the river completed Mercier's straight and was enough to eliminate Winzeler from the tournament for a well deserved $383,075 addition to his bankroll.

Final table payouts

1st: Jason Mercier: $619,575
2nd: Hans Winzeler: $383,075
3rd: Steven Merrifield: $239,100
4th: David Chiu: $156,628
5th: Joseph Ressler $105,967
6th: Mike McDonald: $73,965
