Champion Stakes: Pastorious facing Frankel test

"We know we can't beat Frankel, I don't think anybody can beat him, but it will be great just to be in the same race. If we can finish second, third or fourth we'll be very happy".

Frankel is set to face a new rival at Ascot next month after German star Pastorius was confirmed an intended runner in the Champion Stakes...

Mario Hofer's three-year-old won the German Derby at Hamburg in early July and tasted further Group 1 glory with an eight-length success at Munich later that month.

He was beaten just a length into third by top-class compatriot Danedream in Sunday's Grosser Preis Von Baden and Hofer believes his star colt will benefit from coming back in distance.

The trainer admits his charge has little chance of toppling the world's highest-rated racehorse on Champions Day at Ascot, but is looking forward to the race nonetheless.

"He ran a very good race on Sunday and we are very happy with him," said Hofer.

"After watching the race, we think 10 furlongs is better for him than a mile and a half and if everything is good, the plan is to bring him for the Champion Stakes at Ascot. We know we can't beat Frankel, I don't think anybody can beat him, but it will be great just to be in the same race. If we can finish second, third or fourth we'll be very happy. Our horse will stay in training as a four-year-old and hopefully he can still improve."

Pastorius is currently trading at 40.039/1 for the Champion Stakes, set to be run at Ascot on October 20.

International Stakes Result: Imperious Frankel wins again

"I suspected they'd go a good gallop, but we had our plan in place. It panned out nicely - he won ever so well. It's a fantastic training performance."

Frankel, the top-rated horse in Timeform's history, took the step up to ten furlongs in his stride, running out an emphatic winner of the Group 1 International Stakes...

Frankel has been awarded a provisional Timeform rating of 143 for his devastating success in the Juddmonte International, the fourth time that he has recorded a figure higher than 140. His master rating remains unchanged at 147, with the style of victory on the Knavesmire leaving the impression that, one day, his rating may yet go higher.

The result was never in doubt as Frankel loomed up effortlessly on the bridle two furlongs out in the hands of Tom Queally, powering clear of his rivals to register another extremely comfortable success. Farhh just held off St Nicholas Abbey to grab second, seven lengths behind Henry Cecil's star colt.

Queally said: "I suspected they'd go a good gallop, but we had our plan in place. It panned out nicely - he won ever so well. It's a fantastic training performance."

Queally added: "I gave them enough of a lead for the pace we were going and he won ever so well. He's certainly as good (over a mile and a quarter as a mile). Every man and his dog seemed to want to put their penny's worth in to say where he should run, but to run him in the owner's race and for him to make it 13 out of 13 speaks for itself. I'm delighted to be a part of it.

Sir Henry Cecil added: "That was great, wasn't it? It's fantastic. It's great for Yorkshire, they are very supportive of racing and they deserve to see him."

Asked how it made him feel, the trainer said: "Twenty years better."

When asked about Frankel's future targets, Teddy Grimthorpe, racing manager for Prince Abdullah, said: "He's not in there (the Arc). Henry didn't want him in the race and he'd have to be supplemented. There will be a discussion and we'll have to see. The plan was always Ascot (Champion Stakes or QEII) but we'll have to see how he comes out of race."

Champions Day: Frankel entered for Champions Stakes

Frankel and Camelot feature among 46 entries for the Champions Stakes at Ascot on October 20

Frankel and Camelot feature among 46 entries for the Champions Stakes at Ascot on October 20...

Sir Henry Cecil's unbeaten superstar, who is the highest rated racehorse in Timeform's history, is due to step up to 10 furlongs for his next race at York in the International Stakes later this month, having asserted his complete dominance over the one mile division.

Old foe Excelebration is one of a huge army of possible top-class rivals from Aidan O'Brien's Ballydoyle yard, including Triple Crown aspirant Camelot, Imperial Monarch, St Nicholas Abbey and Power.

The likes of last year's winner Cirrus Des Aigles, Nathaniel, Giofra, Meandre, Golden Lilac and The Fugue could also take him on.

Frankel has additionally been entered in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes, which he won last year, over a mile. However, it is believed that he is likely to be targeted at the Champions Stakes. Cecil could rely on his new addition Beauty Parlour in the one mile Group 1 contest, while the John Gosden-trained duo of Fallen For You and Elusive Kate could also line up. Camelot is a surprise entry, with Most Improved and long-term absentee Parish Hall still in the mix.

The British Champions Sprint entries are headed by July Cup winner Mayson, with Ortensia, Bated Breath and the returning Starspangledbanner still engaged.

Last year's British Champions Fillies' And Mares' Stakes winner Dancing Rain is one of 33 entries this season, with Great Heavens, The Fugue and Snow Fairy also possible runners.

Saddler's Rock, Colour Vision and Fame And Glory could all clash in the British Champions Long Distance Cup. Whilst the Dermot Weld-trained Rite Of Passage, the 2010 Gold Cup winner, has not been seen since May 2011 but also holds an entry.

Frankel: Lockinge run "very unlikely"

News RSS / / 13 April 2012 / Leave a Comment

Frankel is unlikely to run in the Lockinge at Newbury

Frankel is unlikely to run in the Lockinge at Newbury

"The initial scan showed no damage and no hole..."

Teddy Grimthorpe has described Frankel as a "very unlikely" participant in the JLT Lockinge Stakes at Newbury next month following the injury he sustained when working in Newmarket on Wednesday morning...

Winner of all nine of his starts to date, including the 2000 Guineas, St James's Palace Stakes and Queen Elizabeth II Stakes last year, Frankel was due to make his seasonal reappearance in the Lockinge Stakes at Newbury on May 19.

However, Sir Henry Cecil's colt looks set to miss Newbury and any future plan hinges on a second scan on his injured off-fore, which will not take place until next week.

Grimthorpe, racing manager to owner Khalid Abdullah, told At The Races: "He suffered this injury on Wednesday morning working on Racecourse Side and he was found to be a bit sore and there was some filling in his leg.

"Henry thought originally that he might have struck into himself on the gallop. He's a very exuberant and extravagant worker.

"The initial scan showed no damage and no hole, which is positive, which led us to believe and hope it was superficial or just a minor injury.

"But obviously, with a horse of this nature, or any horse actually, we have to be incredibly careful, especially with injuries of this type in this area.

"He's getting the best care he can get at the moment and he'll go into the Equine Hospital in Newmarket and have a scan on a big machine which will tell us definitely if there is any damage.

"There is no point in doing it earlier as there is still some haemorrhaging, which has caused the filling in the leg and that needs to dissipate.

"That will probably take about a week to clear and after the scan will give us good pictures and tell us if there is any damage at all.

"Our initial reaction was that it was superficial and at the moment, we are still in the unknown.

"We are all very hopeful for a positive outcome and we'll have to see how that pans out.

"There will be nothing definitive until the end of the (next) week.

"I think it would be too early to rule him out of Royal Ascot. I would say Newbury would be very unlikely whatever.

"The horse will tell us, but he's going to miss a week and if he was right and recovered, I don't think Henry would want to rush him into Newbury, or even Royal Ascot if needs be.

"If he were right and we were happy with him, he would get into his normal programme and we would run him when the best time came."

Grimthorpe insists Abdullah will make the right decision for the horse when the full extent of his injury is discovered.

"Prince Khalid has been a racehorse owner for 40 years now, so he has experienced all the very highs and all the very lows," Grimthorpe continued.

"His mantra has always been that he wants to do the best for his horses.

"They are home-breds, Frankel is a third generation home-bred - it's like your own grandchildren really.

"It has never been a case of what is the cleverest thing to do or what is the most commercial thing to do, it has always been what is the best thing to do.

"The second scan will probably take place on Friday I would think.

"I haven't fully discussed it with the vets or Henry yet, but it will probably be Friday just to give the horse the best opportunity of it all dying down a bit and most importantly to get a clear picture."

Frankel: So far so good states Cecil

Sir Henry Cecil remains of the opinion that Frankel could be an even better horse this year than he was during his incredible three-year-old campaign...

The Galileo colt, rated 143 by Timeform, is unbeaten in nine starts in all and a spellbinding performance in last year's 2000 Guineas kicked off a run of four Group 1 hauls.

The Lockinge Stakes at Newbury is his comeback target and Cecil has yet to decide whether his charge will then stick at a mile for the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot, or step up in distance for 10-furlong Prince of Wales's Stakes.

All going well, Frankel's stamina will be tested at some stage, with August's Juddmonte International at York an obvious target given the race is sponsored by owner Prince Khalid Abdullah.

"He's grown and he's stronger. He's beginning to settle well and mentally he's grown up. As long as he keeps right, he could be a better horse this year than last year," said Cecil.

"We'll start off over a mile and we'll feel our way. Whether he runs at Ascot over a mile or a mile and a quarter, time will tell. Eventually he'll hopefully be running a mile and a quarter, hopefully by Juddmonte time.

"He may go and a mile and a quarter earlier, but he'll tell us what to do, I'm not going to tell him.

"Every day is another day and I'm always happy after I see him walking across the road after he's cantered. Things can happen to horses."

Cecil is pleased with his string as a whole ahead of the new turf season, but would like to see some rain to help speed up their progress.

"It's a bit frustrating because we need some rain to get them on the grass. The grass brings them on so much more," Cecil told At The Races.

"We've done a lot of conditioning exercise but we have to get out for the spring meetings at Newbury and Newmarket because they are a stepping stone for the rest of the season.

"We have nearly 150 horses. It's competitive as long as we've got the quality, as you need the good horses to have a good year.

"You can have 40 winners of £3,000 races, which is £120,000. If you have a good horse, you can earn that money for finishing second in a Group 1 race."

Sussex Stakes Betting: Follow Frankel over Cliffs at Goodwood

Tipping RSS / Keith Melrose / 19 July 2011 / Leave a Comment

Frankel storms to the 2000 Guineas in April

Frankel storms to the 2000 Guineas in April

"It’ll be a long time before we see another win in a British classic as impressive as Frankel’s demolition job in the 2000 Guineas back in April."

You'd be forgiven for thinking that there's only one race taking place at Goodwood next week such has been the build-up to the Sussex Stakes. Timeform's Keith Melrose puts forward his view.

This Flat season has already provided some of the most mouth-watering clashes in recent memory, so it's pretty remarkable to note that we're yet to see the most hotly-anticipated of them all. The meeting of Frankel and Canford Cliffs in the Sussex Stakes at Goodwood on July 27 will decide who this season's champion miler, if not the leading racehorse of the year, will be.

The analogy with boxing in these big-race duels has already been made by Jamie Lynch in far better terms than I could ever muster, though it is worth pointing out that, unlike so many recent heavyweight encounters between human prize-fighters, both Frankel and Canford Cliffs have beaten credible opposition to reach this championship bout.

By now Canford Cliffs should need no introduction. After taking us by surprise somewhat in making up into the best 3-y-o miler of 2010, Richard Hannon's stable star did at the first time of asking what his predecessor Paco Boy failed to in four attempts, namely take the scalp of French wondermare Goldikova when they met in the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot. That day Canford Cliffs gave what is becoming a trademark performance from him, his potent turn of foot from over a furlong out proving decisive as he held off the charging Goldikova by a length. He does of course arrive in this race as defending champion, too, having accounted for Rip Van Winkle on his first run against his elders last July.

However, it'll be a long time before we see another win in a British classic as impressive as Frankel's demolition job in the 2000 Guineas back in April and on that form he's the one to beat. Sir Henry Cecil's colt is a potential all-time great in the making, and if spread-eagling an up-to-scratch classic field isn't enough to at least make you consider that possibility, then we wouldn't agree on much. Tom Queally clearly thought he was sitting on something rather special given the aggressive tactics employed on Frankel's next start in the St James' Palace Stakes, when he sent his mount for home far too far out and held off Zoffany by only a fast-diminishing three-quarters of a length.

Predictably, the cynics were out in force after that run, but the fact remains that no other horse in training could have won that particular race under such a demanding ride. The Sussex was always a natural next step for Frankel, and it offers the added bonus of affording him a short break after a couple of hard races. How own generation is probably nothing outstanding overall, but so far ahead of the pack is Frankel that his first shot against the older horses really should hold no fears.

It seems harsh to say that any horse 'is no Frankel', but Canford Cliffs, top-class and admirable though he is, is no Frankel. Assuming Queally doesn't suffer another rush of blood to the head, we see no reason why next Wednesday will prove anything other than a corontaion for a once-in-a-generation miler. What's more, at the time of writing you can back Frankel at odds against. Expect black armbands and red bank balances in this corner of West Yorkshire if the horse we've championed since last autumn loses his unbeaten record on Wednesday.

Derby Betting: Frankel unlikely, but Cecil still has favourite in World Domination

Newbury winner World Domination is favourite for the Derby

Newbury winner World Domination is favourite for the Derby

"Frankel is, however, an intended runner in the St James’s Palace."

The Henry Cecil-trained World Domination has emerged as the new favourite for the Derby on June 4 after it was announced that the 2000 Guineas winner Frankel would not run in the Epsom Classic...

The 2000 Guineas winner, Frankel, rated 142 by Timeform after his blistering Newmarket success, is out to [27.0] in Betfair's Epsom Derby market, while his stable-companion World Domination (who reportedly suffered a very minor setback) heads the betting at [5.8].

There are severe doubts about Frankel's stamina for a mile and a half on the back of his Newmarket win, prompting a rethink, but World Domination, a most impressive winner of an eleven furlong Newbury maiden on his sole start last month, for which he earned a Timeform rating of 100P, seems sure to relish the longer trip, with both his pedigree and manner of victory pointing in that direction.

Frankel is, however, an intended runner in the St James's Palace at Royal Ascot next month, and currently trades as short as [1.3].

Handicappers' Corner: Frankel set to prove himself a true great

Timeform Features RSS / Simon Rowlands / 02 May 2011 / 1 Comments

Frankel left them all trailing in the 2000 Guineas

Frankel left them all trailing in the 2000 Guineas

"Frankel appeared to be posting 11-second or near-11-second furlong sectionals mid-race, something more likely to be seen in a top sprint."

Timeform's Head of Handicapping, Simon Rowlands, explains how time and form combine to show that Frankel is as good as he looked in the 2000 Guineas...

What else can there be to concentrate on in this Handicappers' Corner than Frankel? Just in case you missed it, the Henry Cecil-trained colt won the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket on Saturday in unforgettable style to extend his unbeaten run to six.

He was sent off the shortest-priced favourite in the race since 1974 and won by the widest margin - six lengths - since Tudor Minstrel won by eight in 1947. Frankel's combined winning margins now stand at 35¾ lengths.

It was not just Frankel's winning margin that was remarkable in the first British classic of 2011: there was an astonishing 17½ lengths back to the fourth, 26 lengths back to the seventh and nearly a furlong back to the last in the field of 13. Top jumps races are not often won in such a fashion, let alone top Flat races at just a mile and on ground on the fast side of good.

It is not necessary to understand ratings to appreciate such special occasions. But ratings are a way of measuring the worth of performances in a wider historical context, and events like Saturday's test not just the participants but the methods that handicappers use.

As stated previously, the idea that you should pick a horse which has "run to form" and base your entire assessment of a race around that - so-called yardstick handicapping - is dubious at the best of times and is especially flawed when dealing with unexposed horses still short of maturity.

It is also patently wrong to apply the same pounds-per-length allowances to all races at a given distance regardless of the circumstances. And, yet, such handicapping-by-convenience continues to be peddled in some quarters.

At Timeform we use a suite of handicapping tools (click HERE to find out more about how we do things) to assist in coming up with ratings. These include race standardisation - whereby the likely strength of a race is established from precedent, after adjustment for time, conditions, field size, margins between horses and so on - prior-rating standardisation and time analysis.

Each of these measures independently pointed to Frankel's winning performance being worthy of a figure in the mid-to-high 130s on the bare result: a bare-form 137 falls well within the range of likely figures.

But 'the bare result' does not always tell the whole story, including, arguably, here. Frankel went off in front and ran his rivals ragged. By halfway, he was at least 10 lengths clear of the main pack, most of whom were hard at work while he was still travelling within himself. It was only late in the day that he looked like winning by anything other than a record margin.

Sectional analysis would have helped greatly in measuring the merit of how Frankel went about winning the 2000 Guineas, and not just that he did. But British racing does not have official sectionals, and the falseness of this economy becomes especially apparent on occasions like this.

Nonetheless, it is possible to establish that Frankel got to halfway in about 47.5 sec (after response delay and parallax error is accounted for). That is significantly faster than the Guineas for which we have electronic sectionals, including ones run under quicker conditions than this year's. Frankel appeared to be posting 11-second or near-11-second furlong sectionals mid-race, something more likely to be seen in a top sprint.

Frankel gave a substantial beating to the placed horses Dubawi Gold (rated 121, just below the standard for a Guineas runner-up) and Native Khan (rated 120, just above par for a third), but the likelihood is that it could have been even more. The extra two lengths (5 lb) that Timeform's race reporter added is conservative but takes the colt's rating up to 142.

By comparison, the aforementioned Tudor Minstrel earned a rating of 144 at his best, as did Brigadier Gerard, winner of the Guineas in 1971. Sea The Stars and Harbinger were both rated 140 - at longer distances - in recent years. No horse had run to higher than 130 in the Guineas since Dancing Brave in 1986.

Frankel's 142 rating will be tested by his performances, and by the performances of those he beat pointless at Newmarket, through the rest of the year. In that sense it is 'provisional', but it is a rating that we at Timeform are happy to stand by given the evidence available at this stage. That evidence includes an outstanding final time, translating to a timefigure of 136.

Only very good horses can run times like that. Surely only a true great could run one having gone so fast so early.

Is Frankel in a league of his own?

Is Frankel in a league of his own?

"Frankel will face 12 others in the Guineas and he is currently a [1.56] shot to win the race, not surprising given that he has 12 lb in hand over his nearest rival, Pathfork, on Timeform ratings. "

Timeform look ahead to the first Classic weeekend of the 2011 Flat season...

There is no doubt as to which horse is the main attraction on Saturday as Frankel will be out to make it six wins from six starts in the 2000 Guineas on Newmarket's Rowley Mile. Frankel will face 12 others in the Guineas and he is currently a [1.56] shot to win the race, not surprising given that he has 12 lb in hand over his nearest rival, Pathfork, on Timeform ratings.

Besides the Guineas, there are two further pattern races on the card at Newmarket, namely the Group 2 Jockey Club Stakes and the Group 3 Palace House Stakes. The Jockey Club looks an up-to-scratch if not outstanding renewal and the one to beat is Roger Varian's Laaheb. The Palace House looks even more interesting, with the filly Astrophysical Jet set to take on a pair of Nunthorpe winners in Sole Power and Borderlescott.

Goodwood stages its first meeting of the 2011 Flat season on Saturday and there are a couple of listed races on the card, namely the mile-and-a-half Daisy Warwick Fillies' Stakes and the one-mile Conqueror Stakes. The day's other afternoon Flat fixture in Britain is at Thirsk, where the highlight is the valuable Thirsk Hunt Cup handicap over a mile. There is also an evening Flat meeting at Doncaster, while the day's Flat action takes place at Uttoxeter in the afternoon and Hexham in the evening.

There is also notable Flat action overseas on Saturday. There is an all-weather meeting at Dundalk in the afternoon, while Longchamp has Group 1 action in the shape of the ten-furlong Prix Ganay in which Cape Blanco is set to take on some of France's top older horses in Planteur and Sarafina.

Saturday's 2000 Guineas is all about Frankel, but the 1000 Guineas on Sunday is a decidedly more open affair according to the market. Hooray is clear top-rated with Timeform, but there are stamina doubts about her, and with those in mind the market is currently headed by the French filly Moonlight Cloud. Others who could have a major say in the finish include Sir Michael Stoute's Havant, the Hannon-trained Memory and Irish raider Misty For Me.

The other pattern race on Sunday's card at HQ is the Group 3 Dahlia Stakes over nines furlongs for older fillies and mares, while there may well be some Oaks candidates on show in the listed Pretty Polly Stakes over ten furlongs.

The day's other British Flat fixtures are scheduled for Hamilton and Salisbury, while over in Ireland they go on the level at Gowran Park and over jumps at Sligo.

There is also notable action in the Far East where Jamie Spencer takes the ride on Michael Bell's Wigmore Hall in the ten-furlong QEII Cup.

Timeform look back at the weekend's action at Sandown......

The National Hunt season comes to a close on Saturday, when Paul Nicholls will be crowned Champion Trainer for the sixth consecutive season, but it starts all over again on Sunday and there is also plenty to go at on the Flat across the two days....

"Frankel may not even have to run better than he seemed to at Newbury to win at Newmarket on April 30, and it would take a quite outstanding Guineas winner to top the best he has already achieved."

The first Classics of the year are less than a fortnight away, and the last week has seen the last of the major trials. It is a case of "as you were", with the colts' classic remaining at the mercy of one horse, while the 1,000 Guineas still looks as open as ever. David Johnson gives the Timeform view of how things currently stand.

Frankel stretched his unbeaten run to five in the Greenham without having to reproduce the best of his two-year-old form. He has been credited with a performance figure of 127 for beating Excelebration (115) by four lengths with a further six lengths back to Shropshire (97).

This is in the middle of the range of likely ratings prompted by race and prior-rating standards, below the 129 that might be expected from a particularly strong 2010 edition - which saw subsequent Group 1 winners Dick Turpin and Canford Cliffs come clear - but above the 123 and 120 resulting from the slightly weaker renewals won by Vocalised in 2009 and Paco Boy in 2008.

The overall time of this year's Greenham looks unexceptional and is unlikely to provide many further clues as to Frankel's merit. The early pace was steady and a number of the runners (including Frankel himself) took a while to settle.

Frankel's Timeform master rating is likely to remain unchanged on 133p. With regards to his chance in the 2000 Guineas, the last five renewals (with the most recent first) have produced the following ratings from the winners: 124/128/124/125/129.

In other words, Frankel may not even have to run better than he seemed to at Newbury to win at Newmarket on April 30, and it would take a quite outstanding Guineas winner to top the best he has already achieved.

The Craven used to be one of the pre-eminent Guineas trials, but it hasn't produced the winner since Haafhd took both races in 2004. Native Khan's rating was raised to 114p on the back of his smooth two-length victory over Libranno in this year's Craven. He came up short at the top level in the Racing Post Trophy last autumn, though, and it's likely to be the same story in the Guineas.

The major fillies' trials in the last week have merely muddied the waters with regards to the 1000 Guineas. Neither Barefoot Lady (110) - successful in the Nell Gwyn - nor Rimth (109) - who took the Fred Darling - is entered at Newmarket.

What those two races did do, however, is confirm the strength of Hooray's Cheveley Park win. She had Rimth four and a half lengths behind in second that day, with Nell Gwyn third Maqaasid a further length and a quarter back in third.

Hooray's rating of 121 for that win is 5 lb above the average achieved by the winner of the 1000 Guineas over the last five seasons. However, there remain doubts over Hooray's stamina for the May 1 classic, while her trainer Sir Mark Prescott has also reported that she's been slow to come to hand.

A filly that enhanced her Guineas claims recently is Moonlight Cloud, who won the Prix Imprudence at Maisons Laffitte on April 7 by two lengths from Helleborine. In what was an above-average renewal, Moonlight Cloud earned a figure of 112p. Although she had the advantage of dictating, she was well on top at the finish.

One other classic aspirant well worth a mention is the Henry Cecil-trained World Domination. Out of the Oaks winner Reams of Verse, he came with a big reputation and could not have made a much better start than when beating stable-mate Solar Sky by three and three quarter lengths in a Newbury maiden over eleven furlongs. He earned a figure of 100P, which is high for a debutant, and is well worth his place in a Derby trial.

2000 Guineas Betting: Rivals to Frankel falling by the wayside

Is there any way Frankel can be beaten in the Guineas?

Is there any way Frankel can be beaten in the Guineas?

Strong Suit and Zoffany are the latest names to be added to the list of horses who won't be lining up against Frankel at Newmarket on April 30....

Richard Hannon's Strong Suit, who had been matched at as low as [6.2], was hardly a surprising defection given his disappointing run behind Frankel in the Greenham, while Aidan O'Brien's Zoffany (matched as low as [9.0]), who won last year's Phoenix Stakes at the Curragh, also misses out but does hold entries in the King's Stand, St James's Palace and the Golden Jubilee, all at Royal Ascot.

This news has only served to strengthen Frankel's position at the head of the market, with the Greenham winner now trading as short as [1.67]. Jessica Harrington's Pathfork is the current second favourite and can be backed at [7.4], while Aidan O'Brien's Roderic O'Connor is next in at [8.4].
