Follow The Money: Back Huntsmen to Close down rivals at Epsom

Recommended Bets:

Lay Youcouldntmakeitup @ 5.14/1 in the 15:05 at Ripon

Back Huntsmans Close @ 3.412/5 in the 15:25 at Epsom

Back Fazza @ 4.57/2 in the 16:50 at Ripon

Today's Follow the Money comes from the meetings at Ripon and Epsom...

We start at Ripon and the 15:05 6f Nursery where Tim Easterby's runner Youcouldntmakeitup has come in from an opening 3.8514/5 out to 5.14/1. Although she won on her debut over 5f the market obviously does not feel she will be as effective over this longer distance and significant support has come for the Tom Dascombe-trained Little Belter whose fourth place last time out now looks decent after the second and third placed runners both went on to win in better company. There are others in the race that could make this competitive and we are siding with the market and laying Youcouldntmakeitup.
Over at Epsom in the 15:25 6f Handicap, Huntsmans Close has strengthened into market favourite from a high of 4.22n/a in to his current price of 3.412/5. Roger Charlton's gelding won a 6f Handicap back in April and followed this up with some creditable efforts but it was his last run in the 32Red Cup consolation race at Goodwood that is of most interest. He was not beaten far despite suffering interference in running when going well. He runs well on most ground and with a number of non-runners in today's race this could prove a big chance for the four-year-old.
Back to Ripon where we have seen significant support in the 16:50 1m Handicap for the top weight Fazza, coming in from 6.86/1 in to 4.57/2. Although below par on his last two starts, he found trouble in running last time. And if we look back a little further, he won a couple of 1m handicaps last season and ran a close third over course and distance here in July. Kevin Stott was on board that day and partners Fazza again today claiming 5lbs. If he can reproduce that form, as the market seems to think he will, then he'll have a big say.

Follow The Money: Thomas Junior being backed to boss his rivals

Recommended Bets

Back Big Sound @ 4.84/1 14:40 Huntingdon

Lay Thousand Stars @ 1.9520/21 14:50 Leopardstown

Back Thomas Junior @ 2.68/5 15:00 Huntingdon

Just the two meetings this afternoon in England and one in Ireland for the Follow The Money team to get their teeth stuck into. Here's today's three selections...

We start the day at Sedgefield where we will look to back Big Sound in the 14:40. Early money has seen this horse trade from a high of 6.86/1 in to a price of 4.84/1. Trainer Mark Walford stated that the heavy ground was the main factor for the disappointing run last time out at Catterick when finishing a long way behind the field. His last win came on soft ground back in the summer and his most promising recent run, when a close second at Wetherby, was also on soft ground, so today's going should suit. With that said, we think that Big Sound will make a big impression and get back to winning ways.

Moving over to Ireland for our lay, where we take a look at Thousand Stars, who runs in the 14:50 Leopardstown. A negative in the market all morning has seen him drift from 1.594/7 out to 1.9520/21. There's no questioning this horse would win this race very comfortably at his best, but recent form has been very disappointing, showing little to no impression on his last three runs. Although taking a step down in class for this affair, others look better off in the weights to pull off a shock win here.

Last up we move over to the 15:00 at Huntingdon where we will be backing Thomas Junior. A positive move has seen him go from 3.39/4 in to 2.68/5. Making progress in bumpers and hurdling the horse makes his handicap debut here. His last run out when third at Taunton is looking to be good form as the one he was beaten by has went on to win since, and his form on its own isn't bad reading, placing in three of his four starts. Jockey Tom Scudamore takes the ride today, and he has a respectable 25% strike rate when pairing up with trainer David Pipe. The horse looks relatively unexposed today and should get his debut win here.

Follow The Money: Hi There being backed to wave goodbye to rivals

Recommended Bets

Lay Life And Times @ 2.588/5 Market Rasen 14:00
Back Love Island @ 11.010/1 Ripon 15:10
Back Hi There @ 4.67/2 Ripon 15:40

Today's Follow The Money movers come from the meetings at Market Rasen and Ripon...

First up and we see today's lay in the 14.00 2m1f Maiden Hurdle from Market Rasen. Life And Times was an early 1.824/5 shot but is now trading up at 2.588/5. He ran once three years ago on the flat finishing fifth over seven furlongs for Godolphin and makes his hurdling debut today for the John Ferguson yard for who the gap in racing won't be a cause for concern. However as he drifts Yes Daddy is being backed in this decidedly weak maiden making this almost a match bet but one that the betting suggests Life And Times might just miss out on.

We move over to Ripon for our final two races and first up is the 15.10 6f Handicap. There has been a lot of action in this race with several movers in both directions but its Love Island that's seen the most. Initially trading at around 15.014/1 she drifted alarmingly to 26.025/1 but has since seen a lot of money bring her back into 11.010/1. You can forgive her eighth at Thirsk last time out after racing on the unflavoured side at a shorter distance. Prior to that she had a winning seasonal return. With the ground good to soft, the same conditions she won C&D last summer, the money suggests this Richard Whittaker horse is one to follow today and she's still available at value prices.

Finally in the 15.40 1m Handicap Hi There has been backed in from 6.25/1 to 4.67/2. Things didn't go to plan at Musselburgh three weeks ago but the going is much more in his favour today. He had been improving prior to that performance and if he's able to resume that today he could get his head in front.

Timeform Notebook: Galileo to Rock rivals

Galileo Rock made only the two starts as a juvenile - both races taking place over a mile - and it wasn't a surprise to see the stoutly-bred son of Galileo appreciate the extra two furlongs and the stiff uphill finish at Sandown...

A three-year-old in action at Sandown on Friday caught our eye and gained inclusion into the Timeform Notebook...

Sandown staged an informative two-day meeting last week and there were plenty of eye-catching performances. One horse that particularly stood out, in terms of long-term potential, was the David Wachman-trained Galileo Rock. Making his seasonal reappearance, Galileo Rock contested the Group 3 Classic Trial at Sandown, displaying useful form to finish a close-up third behind Irish compatriots Sugar Boy and Eye of The Storm, and he looks like the type of horse that will come into his own when his stamina is fully drawn out.

Galileo Rock made only the two starts as a juvenile - both races taking place over a mile - and it wasn't a surprise to see the stoutly-bred son of Galileo appreciate the extra two furlongs and the stiff uphill finish he was presented with in the Classic Trial, devouring the ground late on to finish on the heels of the leaders and pull well clear of the rest of the field. This year's Classic Trial looked like an intriguing race beforehand as it pitted plenty of unexposed, exciting youngsters from either side of the Irish Sea against each other, and there is no reason to question the substance of the form, particularly with the likeable and reliable standard-bearer Sugar Boy narrowly prevailing.

If Galileo Rock is to contest a Classic, the St Leger would appear to be more of a realistic target than the Derby - where he would probably lack the speed of some of the main protagonists - but an ideal race in the interim, should connections go down this route, would appear to be the Queen's Vase, the two-mile event at Royal Ascot that is restricted to three-year-olds. Galileo Rock would certainty have more inherent ability than many of the horses who usually contest that race and he promises to stay the trip.

2013 Flat Notebook:

Jamaican Bolt - Of interest in five-furlong handicaps with cut in the ground.
Mombasa - Of interest in handicaps, particularly if stepped up to one and a half miles.
Loving Spirit - One to note in seven furlong or one-mile handicaps.
Border Legend - Remains unexposed and one to bear in mind for handicaps.
Galileo Rock - A strong stayer who can make an impact at Group level when the emphasis is on stamina.

Rabobank Champion Hurdle: Fly to face six rivals

"Punchestown might suit Rock On Ruby, but it's an away game for him, a strange place, where for us it is just up the road."

Hurricane Fly faces just six rivals as he bids to land the Rabobank Champion Hurdle for the fourth successive year at Punchestown on Friday...

Among the horses taking on Willie Mullins' crack two-miler are three of his stable companions, Midnight Game, So Young and Thousand Stars. But it is the sole British raider, Rock On Ruby, who is expected to give Hurricane Fly the most to do.

The pair clashed in the Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham last month, with Hurricane Fly coming out on top by two and a half lengths from Harry Fry's charge.

The Michael Winters-trained Rebel Fitz, winner of last year's Galway Hurdle, and Brendan Duke's Mister Benedictine make up the field. The three defections at the final declaration stage were Hurricane Fly's stablemates Zaidpour and Quevega and the Tom Mullins-trained Fosters Cross.

Mullins feels "home advantage" further increases Hurricane Fly's chances of victory.

He told At The Races: "We've been happy with the horse all year. He's been doing all his work well, eating up after, and coming back strong after his races.

"We've spent a lot of time trying to settle him and maybe it's working, as he's not as aggressive as he used to be. Punchestown might suit Rock On Ruby, but it's an away game for him, a strange place, where for us it is just up the road."

Walsh also believes racing on home soil has to give his mount an extra edge. "He's in really good order. Punchestown is 35 minutes up the road for Hurricane Fly but it's a long way from Dorset (for Rock On Ruby)," he said.

Fry knows it will be difficult to reverse Cheltenham form, but intends to ensure Rock On Ruby gives it his best shot.

"We want to ride to give ourselves the best possible chance and that's to play to our strengths, which is that we know we stay."

"We certainly don't want it to be a crawl and a sprint so I wouldn't be surprised if we employ similar sort of tactics to the ones we used in the Champion Hurdle."

Timeform Radio Tip: Wily selection can outfox rivals

"Wily Fox looks overpriced at around 14/1, and appeals as a solid each-way bet despite there being only 3 places. The upside of that is a bigger price on the exchange place market, and I'd be disappointed if he isn't thereabouts at the business end."

Competitive fare on offer at Pontefract, and Rory Delargy heads to the Yorkshire circuit for his best bets...

Pontefract stages a cracking card on the Flat today, and with the going no worse than good to soft, the galloping track should throw up true results. Race of the day appears to be the 1¼m handicap at 16:15, for all the Jamaican Flight handicap over the 2¼m trip will appeal to the traditionalists, myself included.

That 1¼m handicap looks a wide-open affair at first glance, and it's hard to rule many out, but David Barron's old warrior Sirvino looks well treated on the pick of last season's form, and has run respectably on all his previous runs here. A solid third on his return at Meydan shows that he can still go well fresh (has won first-time-up in the past), and he's much better off with Las Verglas Star for a defeat at the hands of that rival over C&D last autumn. Having started last season on a BHA mark of 100, he really ought to go well having been dropped to 89, despite plenty of evidence that his ability hadn't waned markedly in the meantime. Barron has started the new turf season in typically forward fashion, and his record with older handicappers at Pontefract is excellent.

Dangers abound, although Licence To Till is omitted from calculations having run poorly in this race last year, and the most intriguing of a quartet starting off for new yards is Spanish Duke. An unpredictable sort for John Dunlop, he's just the sort that Brian Ellison does well with, and ought to go well having twice won after a break of 60 days or more. It's worth backing both at current odds.

In the staying contest at 15:40, it's worth siding with James Eustace's Wily Fox. The son of Observatory isn't an obvious stayer on pedigree, but has proved suited by a test of stamina since tried in a hood (can be a bit free in his races), and plugged on well when second in the mud at Newbury (2m) last back-end.

Wily Fox has since shown improved form over hurdles, splitting subsequent winners when third at Taunton (19f) before winning over the same trip at Market Rasen. He didn't get the run of things when fancied at Newbury last time, but it's easy enough to forgive that run, and he returns to the Flat on a potentially lenient mark. He certainly looks overpriced at around 14/1, and appeals as a solid each-way bet despite there being only 3 places. The upside of that is a bigger price on the exchange place market, and I'd be disappointed if he isn't thereabouts at the business end.

Recommendations:
All at Pontefract
Back Wily Fox in the 15:40 @ 14.5n/a to win & 4.47/2 to place
Back Sirvino and Spanish Duke in the 16:15 @ 6.411/2 & 6.05/1 respectively

US Sunday Preview: Rivals to rattle Shakin It Up

Calling the winner is far from easy and a lay of the favourite Shakin It Up might be the best play with big doubts about his stamina...

Graeme North concentrates on the high-quality action at Sunland Park on Sunday...

It's very seldom in the States that racing at Sunland Park takes centre stage but it does for once on Sunday when the seven stakes races headed by the G3 Sunland Derby (off local time 17:40, 23:40 GMT) has lured some useful horses out into New Mexico for purses worth almost $1.5million.

The Sunland Derby is the last of the races worth 50 points to the winner in the new and disputed points system put in place this year to determine eligibility for the Kentucky Derby, and the first thing to say is that the quality of the nine-runner field it has attracted doesn't merit it being given equal standing with the likes of the Holy Bull, for example, in which current Timeform top-rated three-year-old Itsmyluckyday beat top 2012 juvenile Shanghai Bobby. For all top trainers Bob Baffert and Todd Pletcher are represented in a bid for an opportunistic invite to a race their respective charges as things stand wouldn't get anywhere near if qualification was decided on merit.

Top on Timeform ratings by 4lb and Morning Line favourite at 3.5 is Shakin It Up, one of two horses in the field trained by Baffert and the only Graded Stakes winner in the field. That win in the San Vincente Stakes at Santa Anita last time out (where the reopposing Mudflats was well held) was gallant enough, and there's little doubt he has unquestionably the best form credentials running to a Timeform rating of 106 on three separate occasions, but he still has to prove his stamina going two turns and beyond seven furlongs for the first time. And, being by the dual Breeders' Cup Sprint winner Midnight Lute out of an unraced mare by the Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner Vindication, there has to be a big doubt whether he will see out the nine furlongs.

Baffert's other runner (and 7 on the Morning Line) is Govenor Charlie who beat subsequent winner Footbridge in a maiden on the same Santa Anita card that Shakin It Up won the San Vincente and he seems likely to make the most improvement of the three twice-raced maiden winners in the line-up. That trio includes Pletcher's Abraham but the form of his Gulfstream Park win is nothing obviously special with four of the sextet he beat that day having been beaten again since but in his favour he has at least shown he stays this trip.

Top local trainer Joel Marr saddles Dry Summer who beat the re-opposing Show Some Magic and Stormdriver in the local prep race that commemorates the last winner of the Sunland Park Derby that went on to win the Derby, the Mine That Bird Stakes, and he shouldn't be far away with home-track advantage a much bigger factor at Sunland Park than many other American venues. He's a better horse than his three unsuccessful attempts in Graded company so far suggest, albeit one of those was in the Breeders' Cup Turf, but all the same it would be a surprise if he was good enough. Calling the winner is far from easy and a lay of the favourite Shakin It Up might be the best play with big doubts about his stamina.

There looks a decent betting opportunity in the preceding Sunland Park Oaks (17:08, 23:08 GMT) if the Morning Line is to be believed with the Bob Baffert representative Midnight Lucky priced up very short at 3.5 in a field among which three-time winner Unusual Way and the Todd Pletcher-trained Majestic River have better form and, more pertinently perhaps, proven stamina.

Midnight Lucky won her maiden in a fast time admittedly at Santa Anita but like her stable-companion Shakin It Up is by Midnight Lute and the fact her dam was a maiden sprinter too suggests she is worth taking on with proven stayer and track performer Countess Curlin another in the mix. Twice-raced Majestic River has the best form without allowing for likely further improvement, however, and the 5 Morning Line forecast looks quite generous.

Rose's Desert in the 15:13 (21:13 GMT) and Safe Trip in the 16:09 (22:09 GMT) also both look to hold very good claims.

Recommended bets:

1pt lay Shakin It Up in the Sunland Derby
1pt back Majestic River in the Sunland Oaks

Timeform Irish SmartPlays: Gold Bullet to outgun rivals at Limerick

"Gold Bullet caught the eye with how he travelled approaching the straight and how he stuck on under pressure in the closing stages..."

The Cheltenham Festival may be over, but the racing wheel keeps turning and the Irish team have found three win selections for this afternoon...

Indubitably shaped with plenty of encouragement on his first start for his new yard when second to Western Man at Fairyhouse last time, keeping on well having had plenty to do three out. He pulled nicely clear of the third on the run-in that day and, given he races off the same mark this afternoon, he looks worth supporting to go one better in what looks an ordinary event.

Treacle was a bit of a revelation last term, winning a handicap at Gowran prior to running a fine third in the Irish Hennessy at Leopardstown. He subsequently failed to complete in the Grand National in April and shaped as if in need of his reappearance over an inadequate trip at Thurles last month. The step back up in trip is sure to suit and, given he should strip a lot fitter for his return, he looks worth chancing to get the better of Chicago Grey in receipt of a handy 10 lb.

Gold Bullet showed fairly useful form in bumpers and shaped with plenty of encouragement when chasing home the strongly-supported Mullaghanoe River in a maiden at Navan on his hurdling bow last time. The winner won comfortably that day, but Gold Bullet caught the eye with how he travelled approaching the straight and how he stuck on under pressure in the closing stages. This afternoon's race is by no means a penalty kick, but he is unlikely to meet anything of that calibre and he is entitled to progress.

Cheltenham Gold Cup Result: Bobs Worth floors Gold Cup rivals

"...Geraghty never looked unduly fazed and, upon presenting Bobs Worth to lead between the last two fences, the result never looked in serious doubt."

The 11/4 favourite Bobs Worth has won the Cheltenham Gold Cup in a thrilling renewal at a soggy Prestbury Park.

Ridden by Barry Geraghty for Nicky Henderson, Bobs Worth was initially held off the early pace, which was set by 2011 winner Long Run with last year's Gold Cup runner-up The Giant Bolster in close attendance.

Long Run, who seemed to benefit from the widely talked-about fitting of cheekpieces, jumped and travelled better than usual in front, but was joined by Sir des Champs (ridden by late replacement AP McCoy) early on the final circuit, with Silviniaco Conti and The Giant Bolster stalking and Bobs Worth not seeming to go as fluently as some others.

As they raced down the hill, the quintet of Long Run, Sir des Champs, Silviniaco Conti The Giant Bolster and Bobs Worth started to pull away. Silviniaco Conti departed three out when landing too steeply, hindering Bobs Worth in the process and leaving him a handful of lengths off the pace as Sir des Champs and Long Run went hell-for-leather turning in.

However, Geraghty never looked unduly fazed and, upon presenting Bobs Worth to lead between the last two fences, the result never looked in serious doubt. He ran out a seven-length winner from a tired Sir des Champs, with Long Run another two and three-quarter lengths behind. The Giant Bolster was fourth.

Afterwards, Geraghty's was quick to give his thoughts to JT McNamara, the amateur jockey seriously injured on yesterday's Cheltenham card.

Bobs Worth returned at a BSP of 3.76, and can be backed at 6.25/1 for the 2014 renewal.

St Leger: Camelot to face eight rivals

Camelot is the sole representative from Ballydoyle after Imperial Monarch and Monday's Galway winner Chamonix were both not declared...

2000 Guineas and Epsom Derby hero Camelot aims to become the first colt since Nijinsky in 1970 to complete the British Classic hat-trick on Town Moor...

Camelot is the sole representative from Ballydoyle after Imperial Monarch and Monday's Galway winner Chamonix were both not declared.

There is another challenger from Ireland in the shape of Tommy Carmody's Ursa Major.

Derby runner-up Main Sequence represents David Lanigan, Encke goes for the Godolphin team under Mickael Barzalona and hugely impressive Melrose Stakes winner Guarantee takes a significant step up in class for William Haggas.

Thought Worthy and Michelangelo are two of nine declared runners. William Buick has chosen to ride Thought Worthy so Frankie Dettori has come in for the ride on the latter.

The field is completed by the Sir Henry Cecil-trained Thomas Chippendale, who carries the colours of Yorkshireman, Sir Robert Ogden.

Follow The Money: Rivals can tame Panther

Recommended Bets
Back Waterway Run @ 3.613/5 Newmarket 14:15
Lay Brown Panther @ 4.03/1 Newbury 14:30
Back Amadeus Wolfe Tone @ 10.09/1 Newmarket 15:20

Today's Follow The Money movers come from Newmarket and Newbury...

We start at Newmarket where there has been some decent early support for Waterway Run in their 14:15 nursery from 5.04/1 in to 3.613/5. Ralph Beckett`s youngster was a winner on her only start to date in a Salisbury maiden when coming from behind to lead in the final strides. She met trouble in running that day so may well be better than the bare form which argues well for her chances this afternoon.

To Newbury for our next mover and today`s negative. Brown Panther has been fairly easy to back in the 14:30 race having eased from 3.412/5 to 4.03/1. He made huge improvement last year through the handicap ranks, followed by a couple of admirable seconds in this race and the St Leger. His seasonal reappearance this year was disappointing before bouncing back to form at Pontefract before a respectable run in the King George. He does, however, face a fast improving rival this afternoon so a lay looks the call.

Back to Newmarket for our final selection where there has been a move for Amadeus Wolfe Tone in the 15:20 contest from 19.018/1 in to 10.09/1. Jamie Osborne`s three-year-old is up in the weights following success last time by the minimum of margins at Salisbury. He drops back in trip today but he was in the lead at the furlong pole last time so this should not be a concern. Although further improvement is required, the early money suggests this will be forthcoming.

Sprinter Sacre surely can't be beaten on Saturday

Sprinter Sacre will face just three in the Maghull Novices' Chase at Aintree on Saturday...

Sprinter Sacre, a brilliant winner of the Arkle Chase at the Cheltenham Festival, will attempt to take his unbeaten run over fences to five in the John Smith's Maghull Novices' Chase at Aintree.

The Nicky Henderson-trained gelding looks untouchable on Saturday according to Timeform ratings (see below) and trades at around [1.16] on Betfair.

Barry Geraghty will be on board and has always spoken of Sprinter Sacre in glowing terms.

"When he broke the course record at Newbury that was a bit of a warning shot of what was to come, but he was brilliant at Cheltenham," he told At The Races.

"It's hard to say he's the best I've ever ridden as he's unexposed over fences so far, but he's the most natural jumper. I've never ridden a horse who does it so easily.

"Touch wood he's so accurate with his jumping, they don't come much better than that."

Irish National preview: Fringe looks a cut above Fairyhouse rivals

Ante-post RSS / / 05 April 2012 / Leave a Comment

JP McManus looks set to hold a strong hand in the Irish National on Monday.

JP McManus looks set to hold a strong hand in the Irish National on Monday.

"On The Fringe is already established as one of the top hunters, fourth in the Foxhunters at Cheltenham in 2010/11 and third to Salsify at Leopardstown on his reappearance..."

The Irish National is the highlight of Fairyhouse's prestigious Easter Festival, and this year's renewal looks set to prove a typically competitive affair...

Four Commanders made steady progress throughout the campaign, winning a maiden chase at Down Royal in November and making the frame every outing since. He again impressed with his jumping when third to Teaforthree in the four-miler at the Cheltenham Festival and his straightforward style of racing (tends to be ridden prominently) means that he should avoid traffic problems, but he may just prove vulnerable to speedier sorts.

Groody Hill progressed in leaps and bounds before the turn of the year, finishing with a flourish to nail Ad Idem close home in the Troytown at Navan and complete the hat-trick, before finishing an excellent third an ultra-competitive race at Leopardstown over Christmas, likely to have finished closer but for a mistake two out. He's been freshened up since that busy spell and should give a good account.

Cross Appeal is another to have gone the right way this campaign and doubled his tally over fences in the aforementioned contest at Leopardstown. He scrambled home by three-quarters of a length in the end, though, having been around four lengths clear at the last, so his stamina for this longer trip is by no means copper-bottomed.

Ninetieth Minute took advantage of a straightforward task in a maiden chase at Fairyhouse last time and seems sure to get a lenient mark in relation to the pick of his hurdles form. That came back in 2009/10, though, so it remains to be seen whether he is quite the force of old, while his attitude has long been a cause for concern. With stamina doubts and lack of chasing experience further negatives, he looks opposable at the current prices [13.5].

Alfie Sherrin returned to form in first-time cheekpieces to land a Cheltenham Festival handicap last time, doing so in the manner of one who will be suited by this sort of trip, and still looks feasibly weighted judged on his strong hurdling form of a couple of years ago. He has been let down by his jumping before, but was far better in that department last time and has to be accorded respect.

Allee Garde didn't look well beforehand and got no further than the twelfth in the four-miler at Cheltenham last time, but his form on this side of the Irish Sea prior to Cheltenham reads quite well, third in graded races at Leopardstown and Naas and shaping as if a marathon trip would be right up his street. He seems well suited by a sound surface.

Lastoftheleaders represents last year's winning trainer and has a similar sort of profile to Organisedconfusion, having been campaigned at significantly shorter trips all season, as well as having his final prep run over hurdles. He's certainly done enough to suggest he's in good heart in recent outings, his latest run over fences saw him rout the field in a seventeen-furlong handicap at this track. With plenty of stamina in his pedigree he looks a major player.

Quiscover Fontaine ran well in this race last year, patiently ridden and meeting some trouble before keeping on well, eventually finishing fourth to Organisedconfusion. He's set to race off 1 lb lower here, having been campaigned exclusively over hurdles this time round, and has solid each-way prospects.

Glam Gerry has gone the right way since switched to handicaps in this sphere, landing a gamble at Leopardstown over Christmas and unlucky not to get closer when third in a typically competitive Cheltenham handicap last time, left with plenty to do the way things panned out before flying home. His strong finish that day bodes well for his prospects of staying this far and he could be a threat to all if his jumping holds up.

On The Fringe is very lightly raced under Rules but is already established as one of the top hunters, fourth in the Foxhunters at Cheltenham in 2010/11 and third to Salsify at Leopardstown on his reappearance, shaping as if the run would bring him on. His initial mark looks lenient and he is definitely one for the shortlist.

Aigle d'Or is presumably quite a fragile sort given his profile, but he has done enough this season to suggest he could be up to landing one of these big handicaps when things fall his way, unlucky not to finish closer when sixth at Leopardstown over Christmas. He rounds off what looks a potentially strong challenge for JP McManus.

This isn't an easy race to assess with confidence at present, as several runners also hold entries in the Aintree Grand National the following Saturday, so it could pay to look for a bit of value. One who seems likely to take part and give a good account is On The Fringe, who looks well handicapped and is currently trading around [44.0]. With a relatively quick surface seeming likely after a dry spell, stamina won't be tested as it sometimes can be in this race and Lastoftheleaders is another to consider.

Timeform Radio Racing Tips: Rivals can humble Bow To No One

Timeform Radio Tip RSS / / 21 March 2012 / Leave a Comment

007 Timeform Radio Tip

"I understand the attraction, but this small field surely won’t help Bow To No One settle and keep the Flat speed we know he has back for the finish."

Will Hayler provides detailed analysis of the hopes of two Wednesday afternoon runners...

It's 16 years since the exciting Monicasman ran out at the first flight when well fancied for the Sun Alliance Novices' Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival.

Perhaps that - and a disagreement with a leading jockey over who would ride the horse - is what caused trainer Alan Jarvis to all but turn his back on the jumps game in the years since, but he sent out his first National Hunt winner since then when Right Step scored recently at Kempton and Bow To No One is a popular choice to give the trainer another victory in the 16:35 at Warwick this afternoon.

However, despite the obvious appeal of being able to back a horse who is a very decent staying handicapper on the Flat off a plater's mark on his handicap debut, I'll be laying him on the win and place markets.

The reason why he failed to sparkle in three starts over hurdles last season is that he pulled too hard at a slower pace and failed to jump as well as his rivals. Unless a pretty remarkable transformation has taken place in the 12 months since, he's going to struggle back over jumps even in a contest where he receives weight from the opposition.

I understand the attraction, but this small field surely won't help Bow To No One to settle and keep the Flat speed we know he has back for the finish.

Only three runners go to post for the 16.45 at Hereford and Gentleman Anshan looks to hold obvious claims of winning the race for the second year running, despite being more than a stone higher in the weights this time.

But even if he does come out on top, Gentleman Anshan is a horse who stays further than this trip and I wonder whether Spanish Cruise and Crannaghmore Boy might have enough speed to make him look vulnerable for a while, particularly around this tight track.

When on song, Spanish Cruise is a very strong traveller and with his stable back to form, I can see him proving popular in the early in-running market moves. It's at that point that I'll be trying to back Gentleman Anshan back.

Recommended Bets

Timeform Irish SmartPlays: Sports to Master rivals

Naas is the venue for today's three SmartPlays.

"Sportsmaster ran better than the distance beaten would suggest in a Grade 1 at Leopardstown last time and should take all the beating on his handicap hurdle debut..."

A small but select card at Naas this afternoon and we have come up with another three win bets...

Sportsmaster ran better than the distance beaten would suggest in a Grade 1 at Leopardstown last time and should take all the beating on his handicap hurdle debut at 14:15. He pulled much too hard for own his good that day and had nothing left in the straight having led over the second last. The likes of Luddsdenene and Idarah should ensure that there is plenty of pace on here and Sportsmaster, who beat Hisaabaat in a maiden over this course and distance in January, is still unexposed over jumps.

Rathlin (14:55) has looked a different proposition since undergoing a breathing operation/being fitted with tongue tie, readily winning both starts at Fairyhouse this year, and can complete his hat-trick in the Nas Na Riogh novice chase at 14:55. A bold-jumping front-runner, Rathlin is seeing out his races much better now than he was earlier in the campaign and makes more appeal at this trip than the Grade 1 winning novice hurdler Shot From The Hip.

Prince De Beauchene did us a good turn yesterday and another Graham Wylie-owned runner that looks to be of strong interest is Downpatrick winner Felix Yonger (15:25). A fairly useful bumper winner when in the care of Howard Johnson, he created a good impression when landing the odds in a maiden hurdle at Downpatrick last time, and remains open to further improvement. His two nearest market rivals Texas Jack and Touch Back both have something to prove having struggled in a similar grade last time and Felix Yonger looks the one with most potential in this Grade 2.

Timeform Irish SmartPlays: Catcher's rivals to be left chasing shadows

Gordon Elliot trains Shadow Catcher who is one of our Smartplays

Gordon Elliot trains Shadow Catcher who is one of our Smartplays

"The second and third home that day have won subsequently so the form looks strong, and Shadow Catcher has all the makings of a sure-fire improver"

A cracking card at Leopardstown sees four Grade 1 races and a competitive cast of supporting races, and Timeform's Irish team have come up with two win SmartPlays and a lay......

The opening event (due off 13:05) is an interesting renewal of the Grade 1 Spring Juvenile Hurdle. Willie Mullins warrants respect with Ut de Sivola and Gorgeous Sixty, the former in particular, but Gordon Elliott's Shadow Catcher (read the trainer's thoughts on the horse HERE) is the one who makes most appeal. A three-time winner on the Flat for Michael Dods in Britain in 2011, he was the subject of sustained support when making a winning debut in this sphere at Punchestown on New Year's Eve, and he did well to win at all given how long he took to settle. The second and third home that day have won subsequently so the form looks strong, and he has all the makings of a sure-fire improver.

As with so many horses down the year's, a move to Willie Mullins is proving a springboard for improvement with Catleen (13:35). An unlucky second on her first start for the yard she duly went one better at Limerick last month, cruising up to challenge the long-time leader in the straight and only doing the bare minimum once in front. A 9 lb rise significantly underplays the amount she had in hand and it would be disappointing if she failed to follow up.

The Hennessy Gold Cup looks far from a vintage renewal at this stage, but that still doesn't explain the price of Quel Esprit (15:45). He has been impressive in winning small-field events at Naas and Thurles last season, and is unexposed at three miles, but his jumping let him down badly in Grade 1 company last term, falling at Leopardstown, Cheltenham and Punchestown, and he is by no means a standout on form, China Rock, Bostons Angel and even Follow The Plan having similar claims on that score.

Cheltenham Gold Cup hero Long Run could face up to 10 rivals as he bids to get off the mark for the season in the Betfair Denman Chase at Newbury...

Nicky Henderson's star stayer looked to have the world at his feet when landing the blue riband of National Hunt racing last spring, but he has had to make do with minor honours behind the resurgent Kauto Star on his two appearances this season.

With Kauto Star now being readied for yet another crack at the Gold Cup, his trainer Paul Nicholls has three potential challengers to Long Run this weekend in the race now named after his retired Gold Cup winner, Denman.

What A Friend, who failed to fire on his only start this season in a hurdle race at Wetherby in October, the enigmatic Tidal Bay, who finished second in the Argento Chase at Cheltenham last time and Aiteen Thirtythree who has disappointed on his last two appearances.

"What A Friend has been trained for two races this year - the Cheltenham Gold Cup and the Punchestown Gold Cup. I expect Daryl (Jacob) to ride him in the Gold Cup," said Nicholls.

"He came back really sick from Wetherby but has run well at Newbury before.

"Aiteen Thirtythree will definitely run as Paul (Barber, Denman's owner) wants a runner.

"He has been disappointing and not finishing his races off and will run with a tongue-tie and crossed noseband.

"Tidal Bay ran a really good race in the Argento Chase and was going to go straight for the Gold Cup and then on to Aintree but he came out very fresh and well. We stuck him in the Denman Chase and we'll see what's in it. He might well run."

Henderson could also be represented by Burton Port, not seen in competitive action in well over a year.

Hennessy Gold Cup winner Carruthers, recent Cheltenham scorer The Giant Bolster, Halley, Medermit, Little Josh and Mr Moonshine complete the entries.

VC Chase Betting: Al Ferof to master Ascot rivals

Ante-post RSS / Matt Gardner / 18 January 2012 / Leave a Comment

Al Ferof has looked an exciting prospect in his two chase starts to date.

Al Ferof has looked an exciting prospect in his two chase starts to date.

"Paul Nicholls would not be pitching Al Ferof in at such a level if he was not up to it."

The VC Chase at Ascot on Saturday could easily prove an informative contest with regards to the Champion Chase at Cheltenham but, lest we forget, this race is a Grade 1 in its own right and it is shaping up to be a fascinating affair...

Take a look through the list of winners of the VC Chase, and name after name leaps off the page at you: Desert Orchid in 1989, Viking Flagship in 1994 and the talented-but-fragile Call Equiname in 1999. Any of Saturday's line-up would jump at the chance to put their own names alongside that first-rate group, let alone more recent winners Well Chief, the ill-fated Twist Magic and the fantastic Master Minded.

This year's renewal does have something of a bizarre element to it, however, as a case can be made for all of the principals that they may be better over further, either now or in due course; that is something that will need to be factored in to the quest to find the most likely winner.

A good starting point looks to be the Nicky Henderson-trained Finian's Rainbow, who made his seasonal reappearance a winning one in the Grade 2 Desert Orchid Chase at Kempton at the end of December. A bad mistake at the fourth last that day was the main contributory factor to him just scrambling home, rather than any rustiness, and but for that blunder he could well have recorded a ready success.

At the time, the impression was that two miles was his trip, and the fact that he responded terrifically for pressure was just a latent turn of foot. However, an entry in the Gold Cup could suggest that his trainer feels he needs further than two miles, now that his free-going tendencies are seemingly in check, and that would call into question his prospects for both this race and the Champion Chase.

There is almost certainly more to come from the nine-year-old, as suggested by his Timeform weight-adjusted rating of 176p and that he is still fairly unexposed, but that improvement may only come into fruition when stepped up in trip. That slight doubt, combined with the concern that his seasonal reappearance was most definitely belated, gives enough evidence to believe that he is worth taking on, especially at his current price of [2.96].

Another that can realistically be taken on with the distance in mind is the Philip Hobbs-trained Wishfull Thinking, and that is not because he ran a fairly decent July Cup trial in the Tingle Creek last month! The nine year-old's best performances have all come over 20/21f, and while his three-quarter length second to Finian's Rainbow in the Desert Orchid Chase last time demonstrated that at least the lion's share of his ability remains intact, it also highlighted that he will likely prove best when stepped back up in trip.

Somersby is a fairly difficult horse to weigh up, and is seemingly at the stage in his career where he needs to be turning the ability he clearly possesses into race wins. Admittedly he is largely holding his form, with a second in the Amlin Chase and the Peterborough Chase and a fourth in the King George alongside a success in a minor event at Kempton to show for his efforts this season, surely making him the most consistent enigma in training! His defeat to Master Minded in the Amlin can be excused, as he is not as good as that rival, as can his first crack at three miles in the King George.

What cannot be as readily excused, however, is his failure to win the Peterborough Chase despite having by far the best chance on form. He did not convince entirely with his attitude that day, notwithstanding the fact that he was not seen to the best advantage as a result of the tactics employed. He had looked in need of the step up to three miles but did not shape nearly as well as expected at Kempton on Boxing Day, and will need the dramatic drop in trip to spark somewhat of a restoration to how he performed in the corresponding contest last year (short-head second to Master Minded).

That said, at the prices he is tempting, currently trading at [7.2], and he is Timeform-top rated, with a couple of pounds in hand over Finian's Rainbow. However, it is up for debate as to whether he can get his head in front of a slightly younger and more inexperienced rival, who could well develop into one of the best chasers around.

That rival is Al Ferof who, after just two starts over fences has achieved a Timeform weight-adjusted rating of 169p. The Paul Nicholls-trained seven year-old produced a very smart performance when winning the Supreme Novices' at Cheltenham last year and has taken extremely well to chasing, landing novices at Cheltenham (Grade 2) and Sandown (Grade 1). His jumping, on his most recent start in particular, looked assured and although he only beat For Non Stop by a neck, he was almost certainly idling after leaping to the front earlier than suits and was always doing enough to hold the runner-up, himself looking a bright prospect.

Yes, he does not have as much chasing experience as his rivals, but Finian's Rainbow is, after all, just the one race out of novice company and Paul Nicholls would not be pitching Al Ferof in at such a level if he was not up to it. The signs from his two most recent runs would suggest that he is.

Of the others, Gauvain would have the best chance, but it would be disappointing if none of the aforementioned quartet were to beat him, Forpadydeplasterer is not the force he once was, for all that he has been running respectably in Ireland, whilst the in-form Oiseau de Nuit and the David Pipe-trained I'm So Lucky are unlikely to be good enough and would be of more interest in a lesser event.

An intriguing contest then in which, at the prices, Somersby makes plenty of appeal and Finian's Rainbow does not. Arguably, the latter is the most likely winner but the price currently available does not strike as being particularly good value when considering the niggling doubts regards his trainers' opinion of his optimum distance and the belatedness of his reappearance. On the other hand the [7.2] available about Somersby is very tempting indeed, but he is difficult to recommend as a win selection. His last three successes, spanning from November 2009 to the present, have all been achieved in fields of five runners or less, and whilst his price is enticing it is preferable to side with the exciting Al Ferof. Paul Nicholls' grey looks a chasing star in the making, and he could well be up to taking the Grade 1 VC Chase on his way to the Cheltenham Festival.

Recommendation

Timeform Irish SmartPlays: Bannock to keep rivals at bay

Tipping RSS / Stuart Jones / 21 October 2011 / Leave a Comment

Racing in Ireland today comes from Dundalk.

Racing in Ireland today comes from Dundalk.

"Both Nocturnal Affair and Mayson ran well in competitive handicaps last time, but both of those are forced to concede over a stone to the progressibe British juvenile and Bannock will take plenty of pegging back from stall one"

Three selections on the all-weather at Dundalk.

Grainne Whale (18:15) may well have bumped into one some way ahead of her mark when runner-up to Ashton Rose here last time and should gain a deserved first success in the opener. She has held her form well this season, placed on five occasions, and looks to have an excellent chance in what looks a very ordinary handicap. Homebrew looks the biggest danger, but the drop back to a mile isn't ideal for him and [5.5] looks too big for one as consistent at Grainne Whale.

The aforementioned Ashton Rose (19:10) won well here last month, beating our first selection with plenty to spare in a 1m handicap, and she looks to have strong claims of defying a 7 lb rise. She had caught the eye on several occasions prior to that that win, getting no luck in-running at Roscommon, and did well to overcome a wide draw last time. She's again unlucky to have been drawn 11, but she has enough speed to get across and should see off an inferior bunch.

The listed sprint event later on the card looks a fascinating affair with the two-year-old's taking on their elders, and it can go the way of the Mark Johnston-trained Bannock (20:30), who is well drawn, progressive and receives plenty of weight from his main rivals. Both Nocturnal Affair and Mayson ran well in competitive handicaps last time, but both of those are forced to concede over a stone to the British juvenile and Bannock will take plenty of pegging back from stall one.

Timeform SmartPlays

Back Grainne Whale at [5.5] in the 18.15
Back Ashton Rose at [4.0] in the 19.10
Back Bannock at [2.94] in the 20.30

Timeform Irish 1-2-3 Tips: Fire Lily to burn off her rivals

Irish 1-2-3 RSS / Stuart Jones / 17 July 2011 / Leave a Comment

004 Irish 1-2-3

"Fire Lily has been crying out for this extra furlong, winding up late and strongest of all at the finish when beaten around two lengths by Best Terms at Royal Ascot".

Two selections on the Flat at the Curragh and one over the jumps at Tipperary...

Fire Lily (14.40) has looked a smart prospect ever since she landed a Navan maiden on her debut in April and the Queen Mary fourth has been crying out for this extra furlong, winding up late and strongest of all at the finish when beaten around two lengths by Best Terms at Royal Ascot. David Wachman's filly is expected to regain the winning thread in this Group 3 with conditions looking just about ideal and looks too big at [2.85].

Cootamundra (16.10) may not have the greatest strike rate over hurdles, but he ran as well as ever when runner-up to Regal Ambition in a handicap at Roscommon over this trip last time and that form sets the standard in the minor event over 3m. Both Catcherinscratcher and Bingo Lady had the run of things from the front when winning last time out, whilst Chasing Cars has plenty to prove returned to hurdling. With that in mind, Cootamundra looks a solid each-way bet at [6.0].

Foot Perfect (17.50) is admittedly another that probably hasn't won the races one of her ability should have, but she's bettered the form of her maiden win when in the frame in handicaps on each of her last three starts, again meeting trouble when third to Red Army Blues at Bellewstown on her latest outing. David Marnane's filly should get the run of things here, with plenty of pacesetters in the line up, and is worth siding with at [6.5].

Recommendations
