Follow The Money: Empire being backed in today's Saturday Sandown special

Recommended Bets

Lay Fintry in the 15:15 Sandown @ 2.962/1

Back Assault On Rome in the 16:25 Sandown @ 6.05/1

Back Zain Empire in the 17:00 Sandown @ 3.412/5

The markets have been reviewed and all three of today's Follow The Money selections come from the meeting at Sandown...

It takes a brave person to ignore the words of the great Andre Fabre and he has warned that his filly Fintry may not be at her best in today's 15:15 Sandown. Her price has eased out from 2.56/4 to her current price of 2.962/1 with large volumes of money traded on her. She has been off the track for 90 days and has a seven pound Group two penalty to shoulder as well. She has been brought here for better ground but this is very much a prep race for the Sun Chariot. She rates a good value lay with several credible rivals in opposition.

Moving on to the 16:25 Sandown, Assault On Rome has been backed to take advantage of a drop in class. The early 8.615/2 is long gone and she's currently trading at 6.05/1. She has been highly tried for the excellent Mark Johnston stable, running respectably in a listed race at Cologne in July and following that with an excellent third place behind Cabs in a Class three Nursery at Newmarket. Off the same mark and in this easier grade, this consistent sort can get her head back in front today. She should be able to get a prominent early position from her good draw and as with most representatives from this stable, keep finding at the business end.

Zain Empire has been the subject of relentless support in the 17:00 Sandown. Small money has been traded on him at as big as 7.613/2 and larger sums at all rates down to his current 3.412/5 accounting for over half of the money traded on the market. He's a lightly raced and progressive colt. After making a successful debut at Carlisle he ran an excellent third behind Provenance at Sandown over seven furlongs, form which has been boosted by the winner since. He posted another good effort on his latest start where he just missed out. After just three starts he is still open to improvement and the strength of support reflects his trainer's view that the colt is steadily improving and can only get better, will like the ground and should go well.

Follow The Money: Thomas Junior being backed to boss his rivals

Recommended Bets

Back Big Sound @ 4.84/1 14:40 Huntingdon

Lay Thousand Stars @ 1.9520/21 14:50 Leopardstown

Back Thomas Junior @ 2.68/5 15:00 Huntingdon

Just the two meetings this afternoon in England and one in Ireland for the Follow The Money team to get their teeth stuck into. Here's today's three selections...

We start the day at Sedgefield where we will look to back Big Sound in the 14:40. Early money has seen this horse trade from a high of 6.86/1 in to a price of 4.84/1. Trainer Mark Walford stated that the heavy ground was the main factor for the disappointing run last time out at Catterick when finishing a long way behind the field. His last win came on soft ground back in the summer and his most promising recent run, when a close second at Wetherby, was also on soft ground, so today's going should suit. With that said, we think that Big Sound will make a big impression and get back to winning ways.

Moving over to Ireland for our lay, where we take a look at Thousand Stars, who runs in the 14:50 Leopardstown. A negative in the market all morning has seen him drift from 1.594/7 out to 1.9520/21. There's no questioning this horse would win this race very comfortably at his best, but recent form has been very disappointing, showing little to no impression on his last three runs. Although taking a step down in class for this affair, others look better off in the weights to pull off a shock win here.

Last up we move over to the 15:00 at Huntingdon where we will be backing Thomas Junior. A positive move has seen him go from 3.39/4 in to 2.68/5. Making progress in bumpers and hurdling the horse makes his handicap debut here. His last run out when third at Taunton is looking to be good form as the one he was beaten by has went on to win since, and his form on its own isn't bad reading, placing in three of his four starts. Jockey Tom Scudamore takes the ride today, and he has a respectable 25% strike rate when pairing up with trainer David Pipe. The horse looks relatively unexposed today and should get his debut win here.

Follow The Money: Duke being backed to be king of Brighton

Recommended Bets

Back Laudation @ 6.611/2 Nottingham 14:50

Back Highland Duke @ 2.021/1 Brighton 16:10

Lay Assembly @ 2.35/4 Newcastle 14:30

The Follow The Money team have reviewed the markets to come up with one selections each from this afternoon's meetings at Brighton, Newcastle and Nottingham...

Today's first selection comes from Nottingham at 14:50 where Laudation has been well supported from 8.25n/a in to 6.611/2. This colt showed promise in maidens on the all-weather but put in a good performance on his first turf start, finishing second at Yarmouth. His trainer William Jarvis reaches for the first time visor today and if that has a positive effect then the selection must go very close.

Our second back selection today arrives in the form of Highland Duke in the 16:10 at Brighton, who has been backed from a high of 2.747/4 in to 2.021/1. The Clive Cox trained four-year-old is having his second run of the season after a promising second earlier this month, narrowly failing to take advantage of a good tactical ride. Highland Duke comes here only 2lbs higher and with conditions to suit, he would not need much more to take this today.

We head North to Newcastle for today's negative where Assembly has been on the drift all morning in the 5f Maiden Stakes at 14:30, currently trading at 2.35/4 from an early 1.738/11. This William Haggas-trained runner has been disappointing on his two starts to date, firstly when down the field at Newmarket on debut before being beaten just over six lengths into third at Beverley last week, and comes here hoping to find easier pickings in this relatively weak race. However although bred for the trip he has to prove the drop in distance will suit and with his two main market rivals contracting in price it may not be a case of third time lucky.

Follow The Money: Hi There being backed to wave goodbye to rivals

Recommended Bets

Lay Life And Times @ 2.588/5 Market Rasen 14:00
Back Love Island @ 11.010/1 Ripon 15:10
Back Hi There @ 4.67/2 Ripon 15:40

Today's Follow The Money movers come from the meetings at Market Rasen and Ripon...

First up and we see today's lay in the 14.00 2m1f Maiden Hurdle from Market Rasen. Life And Times was an early 1.824/5 shot but is now trading up at 2.588/5. He ran once three years ago on the flat finishing fifth over seven furlongs for Godolphin and makes his hurdling debut today for the John Ferguson yard for who the gap in racing won't be a cause for concern. However as he drifts Yes Daddy is being backed in this decidedly weak maiden making this almost a match bet but one that the betting suggests Life And Times might just miss out on.

We move over to Ripon for our final two races and first up is the 15.10 6f Handicap. There has been a lot of action in this race with several movers in both directions but its Love Island that's seen the most. Initially trading at around 15.014/1 she drifted alarmingly to 26.025/1 but has since seen a lot of money bring her back into 11.010/1. You can forgive her eighth at Thirsk last time out after racing on the unflavoured side at a shorter distance. Prior to that she had a winning seasonal return. With the ground good to soft, the same conditions she won C&D last summer, the money suggests this Richard Whittaker horse is one to follow today and she's still available at value prices.

Finally in the 15.40 1m Handicap Hi There has been backed in from 6.25/1 to 4.67/2. Things didn't go to plan at Musselburgh three weeks ago but the going is much more in his favour today. He had been improving prior to that performance and if he's able to resume that today he could get his head in front.

Follow The Money: Ruler being backed as if in a World of his own

Recommended Bets

Lay Enobled @ 2.707/4 Goodwood 13:55
Back Ruler Of The World @ 1.9210/11 Chester 14:45
Back Sorella Bella @ 11.010/1 Southwell 17:10

Today's Follow The Money selections comes from the afternoon meetings at Goodwood and Chester...

Our first mover of the day is a negative one, in the shape of Enobled who runs in the 13.55 at Goodwood and is now trading at 2.6213/8 from 1.8910/11. The Sir Michael Stoute inmate ran just the once as a two-year-old, when a running on third over a mile on Kempton's all-weather surface. That run was a promising one and if improving on that should run a big race but its worth bearing in mind that he wasn't really fancied on his debut going off 14/1 and todays track might not be ideal for a horse having his second run after 197 days off the track.

We move north now to Chester for their 14.45, where Aidan OBrien's Derby entrant Ruler Of The World has been backed from 2.526/4 into 1.9110/11. The three-year-old never ran at two but looked a potential top class performer when winning at Navan last month. It's interesting that connections have wasted no time in getting him out again and stepping him up in class. On his run at Navan the extra two furlongs today is sure to suit and when you also take into account that the yard have won three of the last six running's of this race, everything points to a winning run followed by a possible crack at the Derby. I suppose the only negative is that he was put up by pricewise for the Derby yesterday, negative in the sense that any huge ante-post prices are all but gone.

We stay at Chester for their next at 15.15. Mick Channon's Sorella Bella has been a mover now 11.010/1 from 15.014/1. The filly had an international campaign last season running the three times at San Siro, winning the first of them before running second in a group 1 and 3. That was on the back of some useful performances in lesser company, so its clear she has improved with her racing. She ran in the Nell Gwyn on her seasonal debut and although she was well beaten then it's clear to see she was initially priced on the exchange on this disappointing run. That run should have blown the cobwebs away and back in handicap company she should run a big race.

Follow The Money: Bolero backed to be the punter's Buddy

Recommended Bets

Lay Franklin Roosevelt @ 2.8815/8 14:00 Leicester
Back Brockwell Park @ {4.5} 14.40 Ludlow
Back Buddy Bolero @ 2.01/1 15:30 Leicester

Today's Follow The Money comes from Leicester and Ludlow...

Starting at Leicester and today`s negative on a morning where there has been an absence of any notable drifters Franklin Roosevelt now trades at 2.8815/8 from an early 2.6413/8 in the opening 14.00 contest. Backers haven't exactly fallen over themselves to get involved with David Pipe`s seven-year-old who finished tailed off on his chasing debut earlier this month. His previous hurdles form would give him a decent chance this afternoon however he cannot be backed with any confidence given the run last timeout so a lay looks the call.

Our next mover is in Ludlow`s 14.40 race where there has been some interest in Brockwell Park who has shortened in to 4.57/2 from 6.611/2. This one ran an eye catching race at Huntingdon last time out under today`s pilot Nick Scholfield when making late headway to run on for a place. His mark allocated for this afternoon`s handicap debut appears very fair so looks of interest given the early money.

Back to Leicester for our final selection where Buddy Bolero has been a very solid market leader in the 15.30 race having been backed in to 2.01/1 from 2.747/4. This is another one trained by David Pipe and comes here looking for a three-timer following wins at Folkestone over hurdles and Exeter on chase debut last time out. He is upped in trip on handicap debut today but that is unlikely to stop this Cheltenham Festival entry.

The Punter's In-Play Blog: Nearly backed Grace goes clear

“I fancy Grace will convert now, there’s no reason to suspect otherwise, but I’m not ploughing in at odds on.”

Our man's kicking himself for not backing Branden Grace in China and he's not best pleased with the weather in Texas either. Read Steve's latest thoughts here...

12:55 - April 21, 2012

Not the greatest 24 hours ever!

Deciding not to back Branden Grace in China was clearly an error. He heads into tomorrow's final round with a three shot lead after shooting an eight-under par 64 this morning and he now trades at odds on!

My crumb of comfort is that George Coetzee also shot 64 and he's now five off Grace's lead; he's not completely out of it by any means. He's in tie for 4th but he'll need help from his fellow South African, help that I can't see coming. I fancy Grace will convert now, there's no reason to suspect otherwise, but I'm not ploughing in at odds on.

Over at the Valero Texas Open, Thursday afternoon's starters enjoyed benign conditions yesterday morning and Ben Curtis, who thankfully I backed modestly on day one, has shot clear after his second straight five-under par round. On -10, he's two clear of David Mathis and three clear of Cameron Tringale who also enjoyed the favourable draw.

My man, Matt Every, is also on -7 (alongside Tringale) but he still hasn't finished round two yet. He'll return shortly to the 17th green where he'll attempt to convert for birdie from 11 feet before tackling the par five 18th and I can't help feeling aggrieved about the weather.

There was an almost two hour weather delay before my man even started his second round and by the time he did get going the benign conditions were long gone. The wind was howling when Every kicked off and it didn't relent all evening. Having failed to make a birdie in the treacherous conditions, he bogeyed four holes in seven from the 6th hole. Mercifully he did manage to pick up a couple of birdies after that and he's back in it. After Tringale and Every, there's a three shot gap to the rest.

With in-running plays Hunter Haas, Freddie Jacobson and Troy Matteson shooting two, four and nine over par respectfully yesterday, I think the best cause of action now is to do nothing more. With a lot of luck, Every can get back on track today and with the wind forecasted to blow again, he might have an advantage over the other three in the leading group, in that he experienced playing in the wind yesterday. Ok, so I'm possibly clutching at straws! Not easy with crossed fingers...

14:35 - April 20, 2012

Is it a day of disasters for my picks? Troy Matteson's just had a nine to shoot his way out of the Valero Texas Open!

14:30 - April 20, 2012

I couldn't quite believe my eyes when I first looked at the Volvo China Open leaderboard this morning. I was quite hopeful that pre-event pick Paul Casey, who had started the day on -4 and three off the lead, would be right in the thick of things. From what I'd seen of the coverage yesterday there was no sign of any injury problems and he looked to be in great form but having scanned up and down the leaderboard several times with bleary morning eyes, I eventually found him, miles down the list. So much for being in the thick of things!

Incredibly, he made a seven at the 2nd hole, a 10 at the 12th, and a seven at the 18th. All three holes are par fives and given he only pared the other one - he played the four long holes in nine over par! Needless to say, he's missed the cut.

In stark contrast, my only other pick, Paul Lawrie, managed a very respectable -5 but he's still six off the halfway lead - held by Gary Boyd and Jean-Baptiste Gonnet. A long way back maybe but I haven't given up all hope.

From the moment I got up I've been toying with backing Branden Grace. He was a couple under par through six holes then and I fancied he could get to, and probably pass, the leader at that time on -9 - Nicolas Colsaerts. Then the leaderboard froze for a while at around 8.00am and when it came back to life Grace had eagled the 7th hole. His price collapsed and I wasn't best pleased. After much deliberation, I decided to leave it alone and go to the gym instead and I'm glad I did. I may well have backed him shorter than he is now if I hadn't gone and after even more deliberation, I've decided to leave him alone for now anyway.

Grace will play with Colsaerts tomorrow and given the pair contended together at the Volvo Champions at Fancourt (similar venue) in January (won by Grace) they'll make for an interesting two-ball tomorrow when they tee-off in the penultimate pairing at 05.37 am UK time. Quite what affect that will have on the pair is anyone's guess. It could inspire either or- or they could both be distracted by playing together again. For the record, I have no idea why Colsaerts (a shot worse off) is shorter than Grace. The Belgian has won only once in over 200 starts (this event last year) whereas Grace has won twice this year already!

Anyway, I've decided to leave Grace alone for now because I think the event's still wide open and I can see anyone from -4 or better getting in the shake-up. 6.611/2 is a fair price but no more than that. Let's see what tomorrow brings.

I have had one bet though, a small play on George Coetzee at an average of 70.069/1. On -5, he's more than capable of putting in a low one tomorrow and I thought he was well worth a small play at those odds.

They're off and running in Texas again and that event will be live on Sky at 3.30pm.

22:35 - April 19, 2012

With the threat of bad weather tomorrow, play has been brought forward and live coverage on Sky starts on Friday at 3.30pm.

22:25 - April 19, 2012

With the Volvo China Open being played throughout the night and the Valero Texas Open finishing late, it's not easy to find an opportune moment to kick-off the blog. I was going to wait until tomorrow afternoon but given I've already been busy trading in Texas; I thought I'd better get it started.

Both of my pre-event picks in China, Paul Casey and Paul Lawrie, were given afternoon tee-times on day one and given that the conditions were a fair bit tougher for the latter starters, I'm quite pleased with their first rounds. Lawrie was slightly disappointing and he needed to birdie the last two holes to shoot level par but Casey did very well. He missed a very makeable birdie chance on the 16th but despite that, still shot -4. He trails first round leader Mathew Baldwin by three shots but he'll be out nice and early in round two (00.15 UK time) and he'll be looking to keep climbing the leaderboard.

Quite pleased with the start in China, I'm chuffed to bits with day one in Texas! I was pretty bullish about Matt Every in my preview and so far he's done me proud. You can't really ask for more than a broken course record can you? After shooting a nine-under par 63 in the favourable morning conditions, he leads by three over Hunter Haas, with a further two shots back to a small group of players tied for 3rd.

Rather than lay any of my bet back I've backed a few more players. I'd written in my preview that up on the pace is where you may need to be from early on here and I'm going to take a chance that that theory's correct. The wind isn't forecasted to die down until Sunday so low rounds could be few and far between over the next few days. I've backed Haas, Fredrik Jacobson - one of those currently tied for 3rd, and I've also backed Ben Curtis and Troy Matteson, who I wish I'd backed before the off.

Haas and Jacobson are done for the day and like Every they'll be out in the afternoon tomorrow but Matteson and Curtis are still playing their first rounds (-3 and -4 respectfully as I write).

When looking at this event before the off I fancied the Sony Hawaiian Open and the Puerto Rico Open might be good guides and Matteson's played well at both. I looked at him closely before the off so I'm slightly miffed I didn't get him onside then.

Curtis is something of a panic buy possibly but at an average of 34.033/1, on -4 after nine holes, I felt he was well worth getting onside.

Volvo China Open Pre-Event Picks:

Paul Lawrie @ 34.033/1
Paul Casey @ 38.037/1

In-Running Play
George Coetzee @ an average of 70.069/1

Valero Texas Open Pre-Event Picks:

Matt Every @ 90.089/1
Brian Gay @ 95.094/1
Matt Bettencourt @ 140.0139/1

In-Running Plays:

Freddie Jacobson @ 12.011/1
Hunter Haas @ 23.022/1
Ben Curtis @ an average of 34.033/1
Troy Matteson @ an average of 60.059/1

Follow the Money: Dick backed to put in clever performance

Taunton provides today's Follow The Money selections

Taunton provides today's Follow The Money selections

"Conditions will suit Clever Dick today and his supporters can recoup their losses."

Today's three Follow the Money selections come from the National Hunt meeting at Taunton...

We start with the 14:30 Handicap Hurdle over three miles and Velator is showing some very interesting support from [11.0] into [5.8]. The in-form pairing of trainer Anthony Honeyball and jockey Rachel Green are two from five in the last two weeks when combining. Velator has not shown much in his four novice hurdles to date but he makes his handicap debut today and takes a huge step up in trip which makes the market support so interesting.

We move on to the 15:40 Handicap Hurdle for the day's negative and Sire De Grugy is now trading at [4.2] from [3.0]. It's only four days since he ran a great race in the Betfair Hurdle so although that form is the best on offer here; those exertions are surely going to play a part in this race. There has also been very some strong support for Phillip Hobb's Dare Me and Alan King's Devil To Pay who both ran eye-catching races last time out after a break.

Finally we go to the 16:15 Handicap Hurdle where Clever Dick has been showing continued support all morning from [4.5] into [2.8]. David Pipe's gelding was a beaten favourite on his last two starts but has been unlucky in both races running into trouble on each occasion. The heavy ground and longer distance played its part also in his defeat last time out as he travelled superbly for a long way before fading. Conditions will suit him today and his supporters can recoup their losses.
