Celebration Chase: Henderson eyeing Sandown Celebration

"Finian's Rainbow is going to need to have things done in the summer, but it made sense to give him one more run..."

Nicky Henderson is aiming to end his championship-winning season with a bang by saddling three runners in Saturday's Celebration Chase at Sandown...

Henderson has been chasing Paul Nicholls in vain in recent years but the strength in depth at his disposal these days is perhaps clearly illustrated in this Grade Two event.

Former Queen Mother Champion chaser Finian's Rainbow aims to end a disappointing season on a high, while Henderson also fields good-ground specialist French Opera, who won this race two years ago, and smart handicapper Tanks For That.

Finian's Rainbow has struggled in bad ground all year and while a breathing operation is imminent, Henderson is happy to let him have one more chance on good ground.

"Finian's is going to need to have things done in the summer, but it made sense to give him one more run. French Opera will love it there," said Henderson.

Gary Moore runs one of the least exposed members of the field in Sire De Grugy.

Fourth in Grade One company at Aintree behind Special Tiara, he enjoyed a confidence-boosting win at Stratford last week.

"I was surprised by how well he handled the ground at Stratford as really he's a soft ground horse," said Moore.

"It's a tall order and with the ground against him, he's not going to have it easy.

"He'll have to run in some nice races next year but if he runs well in this, he'll be up against Sprinter Sacre and he'll have no chance in those races."

Colin Tizzard's Oiseau De Nuit rolled back the years to win at Aintree last time out and his handler believes he is thriving, despite now being an 11-year-old.

"Everything looks right for him tomorrow. The ground is in his favour, but we've run him in this a few times and never won it.

"He looks the best he's ever been now. We've been dragging him round in the mud all season but he finally got his ground at Aintree and he sprouted wings.

"Horses can't run to their best all the time, especially at the end of a hard season, so while the ratings might say one thing, they sometimes go out of the window.

"He's come in his coat and looks fantastic. He's in really good nick."

Tataniano looked a very promising chaser a few years back for Paul Nicholls but injury hampered his progress.

He is now with Richard Rowe, who was fairly pleased with his first run for the yard against Sprinter Sacre in the Queen Mother.

"I'm delighted that the ground has come right for him," said Rowe.

"He had his first run for me against Sprinter Sacre and he didn't run at all badly.

"I've been very happy with him since and he looks a lot better now.

"He'd have a chance on his best form as he's a spring horse."

Nicholls runs two himself, last year's winner Sanctuaire and Toubab.

"Sanctuaire is in good shape and if he's in the same form as last year he'd have a chance, but he's an in-and-out performer," said Nicholls.

"We just never really know which Sanctuaire will turn up.

"With Toubab, I've always thought he had a nice race in him but if he runs like he did at Aintree (behind Oiseau De Nuit), he'd have no chance.

"Everything has to go his way but he's won at the course, will like the ground and the sun is shining so you never know."

Topham Chase Result: Geraghty triumphs aboard Triolo d'Alene

Triolo D'Alene held on to claim a thrilling Topham Chase for the red-hot Henderson and Geraghty...

A little over half an hour after stable star Sprinter Sacre turned in a brilliant display in the Melling Chase, Triolo D'Alene was a 17.2n/a shot to claim this two-mile-five-furlong handicap run over the Grand National fences.

Geraghty was never too far off the pace and sent his mount to the lead jumping the final obstacle.

The six-year-old galloped on strongly all the way up the gruelling run-in to hold off the determined challenge of Walkon by three-quarters of a length.

Last Time D'Albain and the front-running Dunowen Point rounded off the placings.

Henderson said: "The boys have done an amazing job. This was always the plan. We thought the race would suit him. His jumping is exemplary and the trip was right.

"Everything was going swimmingly well at home until the weekend when he decided to take one of his shoes off during the night and tread on it.

"He's always been sound and been able to work but we were always having to fight and fight and there were days when I didn't think he'd get here.

"We always thought this would be his race, he had the right sort of profile."

Max McNeill, owner of the Alan King-trained runner-up Walkon, said: "That was a magnificent effort. We had to have a big debate about coming here and he's been so unlucky as he keeps on finding one too good this year.

"I shall have to try to persuade my wife to run him in next year's Grand National."

Melling Chase Result: Sacre Sprints to Aintree glory

A step up in distance made little distance to Sprinter Sacre as he turned in another breathtaking performance in the Melling Chase at Aintree...

Nicky Henderson's incredibly talented seven-year-old had stretched his unbeaten record over fences to eight with an imperious display in the Queen Mother Champion Chase at the Cheltenham Festival, but was stepping into the unknown on Merseyside.

Tackling two and a half miles for the first time over the larger obstacles, he was a 1-3 favourite to beat a top-class field including Ryanair Chase winner Cue Card, Irish raider Flemenstar and his own stable companion Finian's Rainbow, winner of this race and the Champion Chase last season.

With Cue Card and Flemenstar disputing the lead throughout, the pace gradually increased and all four of the main protagonists turned in some brilliant leaps heading down the back straight.

Sprinter Sacre was travelling with his usual extravagance in behind and once unleashed by Barry Geraghty, the writing was on the wall for his opponents.

Cue Card admirably stuck to his task, but Sprinter Sacre brushed him aside and safely negotiating the final fence to score by four and a half lengths without coming off the bridle.

Flemenstar was a long way back in third, with Finian's Rainbow, who was sent to the front by Tony McCoy leaving the back straight, fading into fourth.

Geraghty said: "He was brilliant. I suppose I could have done with going a little bit quicker.

"He travelled a bit too well and I had to take him back a few times to make use of his jumping. Because of the distance I didn't want to get to the front too soon.

"He was more relaxed than at Cheltenham, but we didn't go quick. He tanked a little. He was very manageable, he wasn't wanting to do anything silly like tear off with me. He was very co-operative and a real gentleman.

"When you let him loose like at the second-last he does it too easily.

"The two and a half miles didn't make any difference. He has plenty of pace and is very versatile."

Henderson said: "He's just a natural athlete. He's got a huge amount of ability and knows how to use it.

"I don't think anybody has taught him about jumping. It is sheer natural talent and it's good to watch when it's over.

"As Barry says that is probably as far as he wants to go. He gets two and a half but he doesn't need any more. It gives him options."

Henderson was not completely ruling out a quick return at Punchestown on April 23, adding: "I'm not ruling it in or out, I sort of think I'd like to show him to the people in Ireland one day.

"He's not had hard races has he. Let's see how he comes out of this."

Cheltenham Results: Simonsig scores in the Arkle Chase

Simonsig, trained by Nicky Henderson and ridden by Barry Geraghty, won the Arkle Challenge Trophy Chase at the Cheltenham Festival...

Unbeaten in two previous starts over fences, Nicky Henderson's dashing grey was the market leader and travelled powerfully throughout in the hands of Barry Geraghty.

Despite making a jumping error heading down the back straight, the seven-year-old was still cruising heading down the hill and was left in front after Overturn blundered his way over the third-last.

There was still time for a scare for odds-on backers, though, as outsider Baily Green tracked him into the straight.

But Simonsig found enough after the final fence to seal a two-and-a-quarter-length triumph.

Geraghty said: "He rallied really well, in fairness to him."

Simonsig was already a previous Festival winner, having claimed the Neptune Investment Management Novices' Hurdle 12 months ago, but had not run over fences in public since December.

Overturn, a winner of numerous big races on the Flat and over hurdles, had won each of his first three starts over fences.

And while he went with his usual enthusiasm for a long way, Simonsig appeared to have his measure when a bad mistake stopped him in his tracks.

The most disappointing horse in the race was Willie Mullins' Arvika Ligeonniere, who travelled and jumped soundly for the first half of the contest before stopping very quickly at the top of the hill.

Geraghty said: "It was harder work than I thought. The ground is dead, and maybe that didn't help.

"He missed one down the back and that was unlike him.

"He was very good at the second-last and tight at the last.

"It didn't set the headlines as we thought he might, but he was very good."

Queen Mother Champion Chase: Timeform's runner-by-runner guide

Sprinter Sacre is unbeaten in seven starts over fences, beating Cue Card impressively in the Arkle last term. Imperious when landing Tingle Creek and Victor Chandler this season, and hard to envisage defeat here.

Timeform take you through the 2013 renewal of the Queen Mother Champion Chase.

Mail de Bievre Was a smart chaser in France, winning 3 times at up to 2¾m. Shorter trip likely to suit after impressing for a long way in Denman Chase on British debut, but still plenty to find.

Sanctuaire bounced back from a poor show behind Sprinter Sacre to land Desert Orchid Chase at Kempton, but slammed again by that rival reverting to waiting tactics last time, and bit to prove now.

Sizing Europe won this in 2011 and second last year. As good as ever in 4 runs this season, readily landing sixth Grade 1 over Christmas, but may need Sprinter Sacre to underperform to regain his crown.

Somersby deservedly landed a big prize when winning Victor Chandler last season. Cheekpieces refitted after performing slightly below best for new yard this term, but likely to struggle again.

Sprinter Sacre is unbeaten in seven starts over fences, beating Cue Card impressively in the Arkle last term. Imperious when landing Tingle Creek and Victor Chandler this season, and hard to envisage defeat here.

Tataniano is a fine jumper who has been lightly raced in recent times, making all to score on sole outing at Chepstow last season, but below best both comeback runs before Christmas, and out of his depth here.

Wishfull Thinking has come back to very best this season, scything down rivals late to land a Grade 2 at Newbury in February. Not the easiest to predict, though, and did fall early in this race a year ago.

Timeform 1-2-3
1. Sprinter Sacre
2. Sizing Europe
3. Wishfull Thinking

Timeform's view: While the presence of potential front runners Sizing Europe and Mail de Bievre should ensure a thrilling spectacle, the race is likely to be set up perfectly for the strong-travelling Sprinter Sacre, who has looked nigh on unbeatable this term. Sizing Europe is still a top-class force on his day and can prove best of the rest, while Wishfull Thinking, often patiently ridden these days, may pick up the pieces for third.

Arkle Chase: Overturn advertises Festival claims

Overturn produced another superb front-running display to keep his unbeaten record over fences intact in the Scottish Arkle Novices' Chase at Musselburgh...

Overturn produced another superb front-running display to keep his unbeaten record over fences intact in the Scottish Arkle Novices' Chase at Musselburgh...

Donald McCain's incredible dual-purpose performer was a long odds-on favourite following impressive rounds of jumping at Sandown and Doncaster, but faced an interesting challenger in the shape of Nicky Henderson's Kempton scorer Tetlami.

Overturn was soon adopting his customary trailblazing tactics and even with a circuit to go it was clear Tetlami was struggling to keep tabs on the nine-year-old.

Jason Maguire continued to wind up the tempo heading down the back, with some fine leaps keeping the pressure on.

By the time he rounded the final turn Overturn was well clear and safely negotiated the remaining obstacles in the straight to score by am emphatic 29 lengths.

Tetlami was the only other finisher, with Asaid refusing to start and rank outside Next Sensation falling when well beaten at the second-last.

Overturn has been cut for the Arkle on the back of that impressive display, now trading at 4.84/1.

Topham Chase Result: Always Waining lands remarkable hat-trick

Peter Bowen's Always Waining

Peter Bowen's Always Waining

"He's absolutely amazing. He gives everyone who rides him a great spin around here..."

Peter Bowen's Always Waining achieved an amazing feat at Aintree on Friday, winning his third Topham Chase in succession...

The 11-year-old rarely shows much sparkle for the majority of the season but come Aintree in April, the veteran springs to life.

Once again jumping the with aplomb, the 11-1 chance was one of a small group vying for the lead rounding the turn for home and Fistral Beach looked to be travelling strongest, but it was Always Waining who got away from the final fence quickest and he ran on strongly to score by four and a half lengths.

Chance Du Roy, who touched an in-running low of [1.9] grabbed the runner-up spot from Fistral Beach (went as low as [1.66]), with Aimigayle taking fourth.

Winning jockey Tom O'Brien said: "He's absolutely amazing. He gives everyone who rides him a great spin around here and I'm delighted with that. He hears the crowd and he just takes off.

"I knew Chance Du Roy would take some passing as I won on him last time. It's hard to win big races these days. It's amazing to get a big one on the board."

Bowen added: "This has made our season. Our horses have been coughing and they've not been right for a while. We worked him last week and thought he was in real good form. We took him out of the National because of the ground. It's some achievement to win three Tophams."

Always Waining looked like running in tomorrow's Grand National right up until the last minute, but connections clearly made the right choice by sticking with his favourite race.

Sprinter Sacre surely can't be beaten on Saturday

Sprinter Sacre will face just three in the Maghull Novices' Chase at Aintree on Saturday...

Sprinter Sacre, a brilliant winner of the Arkle Chase at the Cheltenham Festival, will attempt to take his unbeaten run over fences to five in the John Smith's Maghull Novices' Chase at Aintree.

The Nicky Henderson-trained gelding looks untouchable on Saturday according to Timeform ratings (see below) and trades at around [1.16] on Betfair.

Barry Geraghty will be on board and has always spoken of Sprinter Sacre in glowing terms.

"When he broke the course record at Newbury that was a bit of a warning shot of what was to come, but he was brilliant at Cheltenham," he told At The Races.

"It's hard to say he's the best I've ever ridden as he's unexposed over fences so far, but he's the most natural jumper. I've never ridden a horse who does it so easily.

"Touch wood he's so accurate with his jumping, they don't come much better than that."

Sri Lanka v England Day Two: Tourists face daunting chase

England Cricket RSS / / 27 March 2012 / Leave a Comment

Can Andrew Strauss put in an improved display in England's second innings?

Can Andrew Strauss put in an improved display in England's second innings?

"Of the last five fourth innings when a side has been bowled out on this ground, the average score is 174 while England's highest innings total in six attempts in Galle is 253."

England are suffering from a crisis of confidence, says Ed Hawkins, as he considers the reasons for their batting collapse and weighs up their chances of a successful chase...

One can muse for hours about the reasons behind why Englishman go to pieces on a soft, crumbly wicket in the sub-continent against wily, magical spinners. Perhaps it is because they are used to batting on green tops against medium pacers who like an ale and a pie at lunch.

Perhaps they can't see the flight of the ball through the sweat dripping into their eyes.
The collapse of England' top order in Galle on the second day of the first Test against Sri Lanka could have been down to both of those. More likely it was the result of lingering confidence issues from their 3-0 whitewash against Pakistan in Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

Yesterday this column discussed why it was difficult to make an assessment on the match and the series until we saw how England coped.

Well, they didn't. They produced a timid, frightened batting performance which was exposed when James Anderson and Monty Panesar swotted the Sri Lankan bowling around the park with ease for 34 runs for the last wicket.

The chronic lack of confidence was most evident in England's obsession with the sweep shot. They view it as their get out of jail shot, a residual comfort blanket which goes all the way back to Duncan Fletcher's time as coach. As soon as they feel susceptible, they cling to the sweep. It has to be played well, though, and Andrew Strauss and Stuart Broad were both guilty of grasping too tightly.

Those two wickets were two of six leg-before dismissals if further proof were needed that this was the Emirates all over again. Matt Prior and Samit Patel, however, perhaps best personified England's mental state. They went back instead of going forward, misjudging the length horribly. Any cricketer will tell you that playing spin is all about judging the flight and these two were not even close. Between them, Rangana Herath and Suraj Randiv claimed eight wickets for 100 runs.

Indeed, Graeme Swann's four-wicket super show in Sri Lanka's second innings was bitter-sweet. He ragged it square which will only have added to England's unease as they face the prospect of a daunting chase. With a lead of 209, Sri Lanka probably already have enough.

Of the last five fourth innings when a side has been bowled out on this ground, the average score is 174 while England's highest innings total in six attempts in Galle is 253.
Sri Lanka have won only one Test since Muttiah Muralitharan played his last game in July 2010 and, despite Herath being a pale imitation of the great man, they should make it two here. They are [1.42] with England [3.55] and the draw [42.00]. The best wager, predictably, is to get against England for 250 or more on the innings runs market.

Recommended bet
Lay England for 250 or more at [2.30]

Ed Hawkins, the Betting Writer of the Year for the second year in succession, has all the stats and analysis ahead of the match, which starts on Monday...

From Test match flops to ODI champs, the last two weeks have shown the best and the worst that this England cricket team has to offer, says Frank Gregan....

Pakistan are talking a good game ahead of the first Test but England's preparation under Andy Flower is exemplary and they are capable of dealing with whatever Saeed Ajmal bowls at them, says Ralph Ellis....

Nick Shiambouros explains why he's backing a certain gelding to complete a Ryanair hat-trick on Thursday afternoon...

He has won this race for the past two years and I believe he has a super chance of making it three in a row. He should go close at a decent price. At present he is trading at [10.5] on the exchange.

Arkle Chase: Sprinter Sacre set for challenge

News RSS / / 12 March 2012 / Leave a Comment

Sprinter Sacre is favourite for the Arkle Chase

Sprinter Sacre is favourite for the Arkle Chase

"He's looked like a horse we hope might be a bit special."

Nicky Henderson is hoping Sprinter Sacre can succeed where stablemate Finian's Rainbow failed in Tuesday's Arkle Chase at Cheltenham...

Sprinter Sacre is set to face just five rivals in the two-mile Arkle Chase for novices, and arrives on the back of three ultra-impressive wins over fences.

The six-year-old was an easy scorer on his debut at Doncaster in December before demolishing former top-class hurdler Peddlers Cross at Kempton over Christmas, although the runner-up was found to have problems afterwards.

A six-length win in record time in Newbury's Betfair Super Saturday Chase last month sealed his reputation as red-hot Arkle favourite.

However, Henderson is concerned that his keen style of racing could work against him, as it did with Finian's Rainbow who could finish only second in the Arkle in 2011.

"He's looked like a horse we hope might be a bit special. He hasn't beaten anything, but you have to look at his times. He beat the course record at Newbury and he was just beating the clock all on his own," said Henderson.

"He's a classy, good-looking horse and I think he knows it.

"The one worry is that Finian's Rainbow tried to do the same thing last year (go off quickly) and he got mugged. But Sprinter Sacre is a two-miler through and through."

Sprinter Sacre himself was beaten at last year's Festival when third to Al Ferof in the Supreme Novices' Hurdle, but the Seven Barrows handler expects him to fare better up the famous Cheltenham hill this time.

"I'm not quite sure why he didn't get up the hill last year, but I think he will (this time)," Henderson added.

Barry Geraghty again takes the mount, and makes no secret of the regard in which he holds him.

He said: "He seems to have it all, he has pace, and he jumps really well. He has so much scope, he ticks every box.

"I have no doubts (about the hill), he ran keen last year and was probably in front earlier than ideal.

"He may get to the front early this year as well, we'll have to wait and see, but with age on his side and the way he jumps I don't think the hill will be an issue.

"It's a very hot race, there's no doubt about that, but this fellow is the most exciting horse I've ridden since Moscow Flyer. He's hard to describe he's so good."

"Invictus has a problem and at this stage there has to be a doubt as to whether he would run..."

Invictus has emerged as a doubtful runner in the RSA Chase at Cheltenham...

Trained by Alan King, the six-year-old was last seen when beating Bobs Worth and Silviniaco Conti in the Grade 2 Reynoldstown Novices' Chase at Ascot last month, and had been trading at around [7.0] for the RSA.

However, he has drifted out to [21.0] for the race after King said that he has suffered "a problem".

The Barbury Castle handler told www.alankingracing.co.uk: "We will monitor the situation over the next 24 hours.

"Though I have confirmed the entry for the RSA Chase, Invictus has a problem and at this stage there has to be a doubt as to whether he would run.

"We will keep everybody informed".

Grands Crus currently trades as the [3.5] favourite for the RSA, with Bobs Worth ([5.0]) and Sir Des Champs ([6.2]) next best in the market.

Grumeti, stablemate of Invictus, has been declared as "back on track" for the Triumph Hurdle.

Currently trading at [7.0] for the Triumph Hurdle, Grumeti gave connections cause for concern when spreading a plate on Monday.

But King reported: "It's good news - Grumeti was perfectly sound after cantering, so we are back on track.

"Normal service has been resumed and it's all systems go for the Triumph."

Ryanair Chase News: Nolan hoping wind op has worked for Prince

Latest News RSS / / 06 March 2012 / Leave a Comment

Noble Prince winning last year

Noble Prince winning last year

"...only time will tell whether the wind operation has been successful..."

Trainer Paul Nolan has stated that he is pleased with leading Irish fancy Noble Prince's preparation for the Ryanair with the horse having had a breathing operation since his last start...

Noble Prince ran to a Timeform rating fo 152 when landing the Jewson Novices' Chase at the Festival 12 months ago, but has improved since and was one of a small team taken by the trainer to the Curragh for a workout at the beginning of the week.

Nolan reported that Noble Prince had pleased the trainer when working over ten furlongs on grass.

He also added the the current [6.4] joint favourite for the Ryanair Chase seems very well and he has been without any setbacks.

The aforementioned breathing operation was a firing of the palate carried out by vet Ben Brain, which Nolan explained wasn't major surgery, and the horse apparently came out of the operation well.

However, the handler said only time will tell whether the wind operation has been successful with regards improved performance.

Tony McCoy rode Noble Prince to victory last year but he's likely to be required to partner [10.0]-shot Albertas Run for Jonjo O'Neill, leaving Nolan unsure as to who will come in for the ride.

Newbury Veterans' Chase: Saturday no final farewell for Hello Bud

Seamus Murphy's Hello Bud

Seamus Murphy's Hello Bud

"While the owner stated the trip of three miles and two and a half furlongs may be a bit short for his horse on good ground, he added that Hello Bud has been going well at home."

Likeable 14-year-old Hello Bud bids to roll back the year's in the staying veterans' chase at Newbury on Saturday and put himself under consideration for the Grand National at Aintree on April 14...

Nigel Twiston-Davies' Hello Bud will be at least two years older than any of his nine rivals in the Support Greatwood Veterans' Handicap Chase as he goes in pursuit of his first victory since scooping Aintree's Becher Chase in 2010.

For a while it appeared as if he might repeat the feat just before Christmas, jumping with his usual enthusiasm and still going sweetly when unseating regular partner Sam Twiston-Davies at the Canal Turn.

His owner Seamus Murphy recently expressed himself pleased with both that effort and his fifth in the Classic Chase at Warwick last time but hopes his 130-rated chaser can get his head in front this time.

While the owner stated the trip of three miles and two and a half furlongs may be a bit short for his horse on good ground, he added that Hello Bud has been going well at home.

While Grand National entry Niche Market heads the Timeform ratings for the race, it's Alan King-trained Blazing Bailey who heads the weights.

Blazing Bailey, who only just qualifies for a veteran's race being ten-years-old, ran to a career high chase rating of 147 when winning at Ffos Las in February last year but has failed to make an impression in any of his races since.

However, for all that he's not shone recently, he has conested the Hennessy, Welsh National and Warwick's Classic Chase on his three most recent outings and is now down to a BHA rating 4 lb lower than his last winning one.

Philip Hobbs' Fair Along, another with a Grand National engagement, and former Summer National scorer Ouzbeck, from the in-form Emma Lavelle yard, are also amongst the 10-runner field.

Arkle Chase News: Don't overlook Menorah warns Hobbs

News RSS / / 01 March 2012 / Leave a Comment

Menorah and Richard Johnson

Menorah and Richard Johnson

"I do think he has been a bit unlucky, his schooling at home has always been very good."

Philip Hobbs believes the stronger guaranteed pace in the Racing Post Arkle at the Cheltenham Festival will be of great benefit to Menorah.

The former classy hurdler, who was rated 159 (7 lb higher than his current chase figure) over timber by Timeform, has a tendency to give the odd fence a clout in his races since being sent over bigger obstacles.

Menorah was a faller at Doncaster when last seen, but Philip Hobbs expects the faster pace a week on Tuesday will help his jumping in one of the hottest renewals of the race for years.

He said: "I do think he has been a bit unlucky, his schooling at home has always been very good.

"In his races he jumps 90% of his fences very well but of course 90% is not good enough, so we hope we can get everything together on the day.

"A strong pace will suit him much better - these muddling novice chases haven't been ideal.

"Sprinter Sacre looks as though he might be exceptional, Peddlers Cross obviously disappointed last time.

"Cue Card would be a danger if he was back to his best and he'll probably make the running, so we'll see.

"His schooling has been brilliant since he fell. Maybe Doncaster might even have taught him a lesson, you never know," the Minehead handler told At The Races.

Menorah is currently trading at [15.0] for the Arkle Chase at Cheltenham on March 13, with Sprinter Sacre the [2.32] market leader, Peddlers Cross second best at [5.5] and last year's Supreme Novices' winner Al Ferof at [6.4].
