Follow The Money: Wind to blow them away at Southwell

"If Powerful Wind can get ahead early he could be hard to claw back. Daryl Byrne claims a valuable 5lb today and that could prove the difference."

Back Powerful Wind @ 7.413/2 in the 16:25 at Southwell

Today's selections come from the meetings at Southwell and Wincanton.

We start things off with today's recommended lay which comes in the 15:25 at Southwell where Moonlight Venture has been matched as low as 1.444/9 but is now out to 1.784/5. Second on his debut for Kevin Ryan, the market drift seems strange at first but the form of that race is yet to be franked and it is hard to gauge just how good this gelding is.

The opposition looks strong, too. Sea Spear is another who has had just the one run (finishing a close-up sixth) but nevertheless looks promising. Playtothewhistle, however, looks a bigger danger to us at a tempting price of around 10.09/1 with some fairly decent form already in the book. Well backed when 6.5 lengths fourth of eight last-time-out over course and distance at Southwell, that form looks solid with winner Mondlicht an easy winner around Lingfield on Tuesday. Considering all this, we have to make Moonlight Venture a lay today.

We stay at Southwell for the 16:25 where Powerful Wind has been well backed for Ron Harris, moving from 8.71n/a in to 7.413/2. Notorious for going off very fast, the wide draw in stall 9 is not ideal but he should be able to get past the field from the stalls to get a lead. And if he can get ahead early he could be hard to claw back. Daryl Byrne claims a valuable 5lb today and that could prove the difference. With the money coming for him he could be worth giving a chance to at a tempting price.

Our final recommendation today comes in the 16:35 at Wincanton where Giant Sequoia is being backed off the boards from a high of 9.08/1 in to 4.1n/a. Disappointing on the flat and over hurdles when trained by Barney Curley but very interesting with that former connection with all the money coming for him today. It is his debut for Sophie Leech today over hurdles and despite not having the best of form and infact no winning form since taking a handicap hurdle at Clonmel in 2011, the sheer amount of money coming for him today is impossible to ignore.

Follow The Money: Can anything catch Fire at Southwell?

"If Dubai Dynamo can reproduce the form of his last run and take advantage of a lower handicap mark he could go close to victory today."

Back Dubai Dynamo @ 3.352/1 in the 16:05 at Ayr

Today's movers come from the meetings at Ayr and Southwell.

We start at Southwell where Relight My Fire has been backed in to 4.43/1 from 7.96/1 to win the 14:15 Nursery (Class 6) over 6f. The two-year-old colt ran reasonably well at Redcar, beaten by two lengths on softer ground and makes his handicap debut today at this modest level. With so little form in the book it is very difficult to come to any obvious predictions, but the market support suggests a positive ride is expected.

In the 14:45 Maiden Auction Stakes over 7f at the same track, Poetic Princess has drifted out to 4.03/1 from 3.02/1. The 2yo filly did not run well in her last race at Redcar and perhaps looked exposed, so this could be a market reaction to that race. She is making her debut on the fibresand, and much will be decided on how she takes to this surface. She has the most experience and runs off the lowest weight, though the market suggests she may well find at least one too good today.

Our final bet takes us to Ayr, where in the 16:05 in the Class 2 Handicap over 1m Dubai Dynamo has been supported in to 3.352/1 from 4.203/1. The 7yo gelding finished second at Ripon last time out and drops 2lb in the handicap for today's race since that run. It has to be said that Dubai Dynamo doesn't have a high win rate, with one victory in his last eight races. However, the forecast good/good-to-soft may help as his last victory was on good-to-soft and he has dropped 5lb in the last month. If he can reproduce the form of his last run and take advantage of a lower handicap mark he could go close to victory today.

Nick Shiambouros Patented 80/20 Bet: Southwell, 17:00

80/20 RSS / / 19 March 2012 / Leave a Comment

It's a case of play it again, Sam, as Nick backs Monday's 80/20 to put in an improved performance...

Today's 80/20 is Sam D'Oc in the 17:00 at Southwell. This gelding finished down the field in a race won by Royal Entourage over this course last month. He was never travelling and was beaten a long way from home. He had previously won a race at Musselburgh in good style from Hotgrove Boy. I think he is worth another chance and could run well at a decent price. At present he is trading at [7.8] on the exchange.

Can Nick pull out a winner from today's Newton Abbot card?...

He hit the Gold Cup winner yesterday - can Nick lead us to more profits?...

Two years ago, when all eyes were on two famous horses at the top of the market, Nick was on the money when he backed Imperial Commander. In 2012, our man is hoping that his selection can split the favourites once again....

Follow The Money: Back a Mean feat at Southwell

All today's FTM runners are in action at Southwell

"We've seen money for No Mean Trick, at [6.6] from a high of [9.8] in the 14:40."

Today's Follow The Money movers come from Southwell...

At Southwell, in the 14:10 7 furlong handicap, we've seen strong money for Sopran Nad , having been backed from [6.0] into [4.3]. Ridden by promising apprentice Raul Da Silva this front runner is a course and distance winner who races off a winning mark. He is the only front runner in the field so should be able to dictate this small field. The main worry is that he appears to have lost his form a little from last summer. However, he was freshened up over Christmas and made a low key reappearance at Wolverhampton three weeks ago. The money appears to suggest he can put that behind him and he looks sure play a big part in the finish.

In the following race, the 14:40 five furlong handicap, we've seen money for No Mean Trick who now disputes favouritism at [6.6] from a high of [9.8]. His last three starts over course and distance have read: first, second, first. However, his last two runs have been at Wolverhampton. He's still shaped well though, missing the break both times, when he usually likes to be prominent and also racing 3lbs wrong two starts ago and doing the best of the hold-up horses next time out. It's also worth noting that Wolverhampton's five furlongs is around a bend whereas today he races back at the straight five of Southwell. He's certainly been shaping like he's still on a fair mark and he certainly looks capable of making up the two lengths on Dancing Freddy who beat him last time.

Finally, we look to the 15:40 for our lay, Mediterranean Sea. This gutsy mare might be seen as a risky lay having won three on the bounce, but there's a notable lack of confidence in her, drifting from [2.68] out to [3.95]. Her last race looked to fall apart with the other two market leaders running no sort of races and she was left with a fairly simple task. She was put up another 4lbs for that and this contest looks a much better standard with plenty in good form. Most of that form comes from today's course. Mediterranean Sea will travel well into the race but hopefully her new mark will hold her back enough to stop her taking this.

Nick explains why he's back a Star turn at Southwell on Wednesday afternoon...

Today's 80/20 is Pittodrie Star in the 15:20 at Southwell. This gelding finished a decent second to Boston Blue at Uttoxeter last month. He made good progress three flights from home and finished strongly, but he was unable to get to grips with the game winner. I think he has more to offer and should run well at a fair price. At present he is trading at [7.6] on the exchange.

Handling the underfoot conditions today may be the key but can Nick's selection find it?...

We're at Wolverhampton today but whose chances is Nick howling about?...

Will Nick's selection be the one calling the shots this afternoon or will it it be overruled?

Today's 80/20 is Overrule in the 14.45 at Southwell.

This gelding finished a close second to Magic Millie over this course last month. He took the lead a furlong from home but was collared close home by the game winner. I think he sets a fair standard in this bumper and should go close at a fair price. At present he is trading at [4.5] on the exchange.

There are good reasons to be backing Nick's recommendation today. And not just because it's named after a Gavin and Stacy character......

Nick's backing today's 80/20 to bounce back from a recent disappointment......

Follow The Money: It's all about Southwell

Tipping RSS / / 12 February 2012 / Leave a Comment

001 Tipping

Two backs and one lay and today they all come from Southwell. Over to you, Follow The Money crew.

Today's Follow The Money movers come from Southwell where an additional "Jumpers Bumper" meeting has been added after the cold snap ravaged the schedule. All races are National Hunt Flat races over two miles on the Fibresand surface.

Our first back is in the 13:45 where Ferdy Murphy's The Hollinwell is [2.72] favourite after being a high of [7.4]. He is a fairly useful chaser and has the highest rating in the field. Add to that some course and distance form, winning a similar "Jumpers Bumper" event back in 2010, the only one in the field to have run on the surface, the money suggests he was way too big early on today and must have a big chance.

Two races later and we have our bigger back. In the 14:45 Alan Swinbanks Saviero is [9.0] in from [15.0]. He has a full set of bumper, hurdles and chase victories although has been out of sorts recently. He is however one of the more talented contenders in the race and the money suggests he could be involved at a decent price.

Finally we move to the end of the card for today's lay. In the 16:25 Glen Countess has moved from [2.48] out to [3.7]. Brendan Powell's mare is a former Point to Point winner and ran with promise when beaten well by a Willie Mullins horse in a Fairyhouse Bumper last time out. However, that form hasn't held up and punters are coming in for a couple of others ahead of this one.

Recommended Bets:

Back The Hollinwell [2.72] Southwell 13:45
Back Saniero [9] Southwell 14:45
Lay Glen Countess [3.7] Southwell 16:25

That's all for today. If you're on the move this information is recorded on 0870 90 80 181.

It's all about Leopardstown for David Cleary today and though the best bet of the day lies elsewhere, there are two seriously over-priced runners in the feature race. Read on......

Will Nick's selection be the one calling the shots this afternoon or will it it be overruled?...

A cracking card at Leopardstown sees four Grade 1 races and a competitive cast of supporting races, and Timeform's Irish team have come up with two win SmartPlays and a lay.........

Southwell comes to the rescue in Britain today

Southwell comes to the rescue in Britain today

"The Hollinwell is not usually one for maximum faith but, having won a similar race over course-and-distance during another cold snap 14 months ago, he ought to take plenty of beating."

Exeter has failed to get the green light, so Southwell's card of "Jumpers' Bumpers" is the target for today's placepot permutation...

13:15 - Fresh from Tara Royal's victory at Musselburgh yesterday, Donald McCain can saddle another winner in the shape of Smadynium, who was only caught close home by Big Water (won again recently) on his debut at Catterick last month and should make short work of his rivals this afternoon. Banker.

13:45 - The Hollinwell is not usually one for maximum faith (has looked none to genuine) but, having won a similar race over course-and-distance during another cold snap 14 months ago, he ought to take plenty of beating. Having gone well for similarly-inexperienced riders Robert McCarth and Tony Kelly recently, it could just be that he responds favourably to another of the yard's conditionals, John Winston.

14:15 - With Captain Moonman and Vinomore (ran Friday) non-runners, the third is down to three starters and, therefore, the winner must be found. It'll be surprising if that isn't either Sir Tantallus Hawk (developed into a fairly useful performer over jumps in and expected to bounce back from below-par effort over hurdles last time) or Smart Act (matched form shown sole start in a bumper when second over hurdles at Carlisle in December), so both are included.

14:45 - Tornado Bob has plenty of ability and really ought to sail home in the fourth leg, but he has shown little since second in an Ascot novice hurdle a year ago (sustained heavy fall on chase debut in November) and is readily taken on. Overrule, who won on the Flat at the course last month, and Russian Flag, who hasn't been at his best over fences recently but has enough ability to feature, are the two preferred.

15:20 - The fifth leg is undoubtedly the most competitive race on the card. Abergavenny, Priceless Art and Taikoo are the ones to concentrate on but, with fewer lines likely to ensure a bigger payout, only the latter two are taken as both are course winners on the Flat.

15:55 - Thanfully there's a banker in the last, with A Little Swifter expected to build on her back-to-best third at Leciester last month provided she handles the surface.

Selections:

13:15 - 10
13:45 - 4

Brian Ellison has two in-form runners

"Upper Lambourn returned all guns blazing to win both starts here in January."

Timeform give a runner-by-runner guide to a competitive sprint handicap at Southwell...

Close To The Edge improved in 2011, winning 3 times, latest at Wolverhampton in September. Assessor now in charge, though, never better than midfield in 5f handicap here last time.

Ghostwing returned to form on fibresand of late and took advantage of declining mark when winning 5f dash here last month. Since below par at Wolverhampton and will appreciate return to this surface

Global Village has been in cracking form during the past few months, winning 3 times, last 2 over C&D and lost nothing in defeat when runner-up here since. Enters calculations once again.

Avonrose was a back-to-form winner of 7f handicap here before good Wolverhampton second. Just fair fourth over C&D since, underlining that sprinting not really her game unless first-time visor does the trick.

Bandstand is a polytrack winner who was back on the up when coming late to snatch C&D handicap last month. Lightly raced for one of his age, so possible he could shrug off a far lesser effort at Kempton since.

Caldercruix appreciated drop to this trip when regaining the winning thread at Wolverhampton in December. Matched that in defeat there both starts since and can't rule out if proving as effective on fibresand.

Upper Lambourn returned all guns blazing to win both starts here in January. Most recent claiming success was a career best and the hat-trick beckons now back handicapping for new yard.

Dancing Freddy was successful 3 times in 2011. Holding form well this winter, including neck second to Bandstand over C&D last month, and should be on the premises once again.

Punching is a fibresand specialist who cashed in on falling mark to beat Rowan Spirit over C&D in November. Operating below that level at present, though, so others preferred.

Joe Le Taxi won 4 times over 6f on AW in early-2011 (including here). Had a couple of runs returned to former yard after disappointing twice in the US later that year, but yet to recapture full sparkle.

Timeform 1-2-3:
1. Upper Lambourn
2. Global Village
3. Bandstand

Timeform View: Brian Ellison's in-form duo Upper Lambourn and Global Village look sure to be involved once again, with the first-named taken to make a successful debut for the yard after 2 wins last month for Jamie Osborne. Bandstand returned to winning ways on his penultimate start and if back on song is just one of several other possibilities.

Southwell is the venue for the placepot this evening

Southwell is the venue for the placepot this evening

"Spic 'N Span and Bookiesindex Boy are both tricky customers but can generally be trused to give their running over five furlongs at Southwell"

Southwell's evening meeting is the target for today's placepot.

18:00 - Castle Myth's Southwell record is so good that it's hard to leave him out even if he is returning from time off for a new yard (for whom he's had a couple of runs over hurdles). Think It's All Over is a slightly different proposition in that he's never tackled the surface, but everything about him suggests it'll suit, so he's the second selection.

18:30 - Pint Size stands out on form in the seller and has already proved himself adept under the conditions, so he's banker material in the second leg with question marks over the rest.

19:00 - Amtired took a while to click but has shown improvement since switched to fibresand, and a likely strong pace will suit his come-from-behind style tonight. King Columbo has dropped in the weights recently and is related to fibresand winners, so he's the second choice in the mile handicap.

19:30 - You shouldn't go far wrong if siding with Quails Hollow and Cluain Dara in the mile-and-a-half maiden. The former has the best form and is open to more improvement, while the latter looks the just the type of Mark Johnston horse that will take to this unique surface.

20:00 - Another banker in the penultimate leg. There's a case for saying it's a match between the pair at the head of the betting, and of the two, Captain Bellamy is far more likely to be suited by the step up in trip.

20:30 - Spic 'N Span and Bookiesindex Boy are both tricky customers but can generally be trused to give their running over five furlongs at Southwell, so they make more appeal than the remainder, at least for placepot purposes!

The only Flat meeting in Britain today is at Redcar, and it is the venue for today's placepot......

The Super Sprint, with 25 runners and just three places up for grabs, makes Newbury an unattractive proposition for placepot purposes, but it's the four-runner conditions event, where they would all have to go on the ticket, that confirms it as a no-go. Over to Newmarket it is then......
