Southwell comes to the rescue in Britain today

Southwell comes to the rescue in Britain today

"The Hollinwell is not usually one for maximum faith but, having won a similar race over course-and-distance during another cold snap 14 months ago, he ought to take plenty of beating."

Exeter has failed to get the green light, so Southwell's card of "Jumpers' Bumpers" is the target for today's placepot permutation...

13:15 - Fresh from Tara Royal's victory at Musselburgh yesterday, Donald McCain can saddle another winner in the shape of Smadynium, who was only caught close home by Big Water (won again recently) on his debut at Catterick last month and should make short work of his rivals this afternoon. Banker.

13:45 - The Hollinwell is not usually one for maximum faith (has looked none to genuine) but, having won a similar race over course-and-distance during another cold snap 14 months ago, he ought to take plenty of beating. Having gone well for similarly-inexperienced riders Robert McCarth and Tony Kelly recently, it could just be that he responds favourably to another of the yard's conditionals, John Winston.

14:15 - With Captain Moonman and Vinomore (ran Friday) non-runners, the third is down to three starters and, therefore, the winner must be found. It'll be surprising if that isn't either Sir Tantallus Hawk (developed into a fairly useful performer over jumps in and expected to bounce back from below-par effort over hurdles last time) or Smart Act (matched form shown sole start in a bumper when second over hurdles at Carlisle in December), so both are included.

14:45 - Tornado Bob has plenty of ability and really ought to sail home in the fourth leg, but he has shown little since second in an Ascot novice hurdle a year ago (sustained heavy fall on chase debut in November) and is readily taken on. Overrule, who won on the Flat at the course last month, and Russian Flag, who hasn't been at his best over fences recently but has enough ability to feature, are the two preferred.

15:20 - The fifth leg is undoubtedly the most competitive race on the card. Abergavenny, Priceless Art and Taikoo are the ones to concentrate on but, with fewer lines likely to ensure a bigger payout, only the latter two are taken as both are course winners on the Flat.

15:55 - Thanfully there's a banker in the last, with A Little Swifter expected to build on her back-to-best third at Leciester last month provided she handles the surface.

Selections:

13:15 - 10
13:45 - 4
14:15 - 2, 3
14:45 - 6, 9
15:20 - 7, 10
