Musselburgh Placepot: Wednesday February 12

Radio Nowhere jumped boldly at Newcastle and could have more to offer in this sphere so we will bank on him...

Musselburgh is the only course that can provide national hunt action on Wednesday and that is where we head for our Placepot attempt...

13:40- A tricky low-grade affair kicks things off and the first horse that we will side with is Tears From Heaven as he shaped with some promise here last month, proving that he still retains his ability. He seems to go well at this venue (won a three-mile handicap chase in 2012) and another bold bid looks likely. Fozy Moss has improved on his poor hurdles form since switched over fences and bounced back from some lesser efforts to score at Carlisle last week. Provided he has recovered from those exertions, he is likely to go well.

14:10- Fennell Bay was a useful Flat handicapper for Mark Johnston and he seems to have taken well to hurdling based on his easy success at Fakenham. He remains open to considerable progress in this sphere and is banker material.

14:40- Radio Nowhere finished fourth in a strong handicap hurdle at Doncaster and confirmed that he was back to form with a good second on his chasing debut at Newcastle. He jumped boldly on that occasion and could have more to offer in this sphere so we will bank on him in order to keep the lines down.

15:15- Willie Hall has found a bit of form of late, winning with more in hand than the bare margin would imply at Sedgefield last time, and he is the first horse worth turning to. He travelled extremely well at Sedgefield before idling markedly late on and seemed to have a bit up his sleeve. It is also worth including Some Lad as he was in good form when last seen in the spring and has gone well fresh in the past.

15:50- Forced Family Fun made a successful handicap debut in a competitive-looking race at Doncaster last month, travelling well and showing a good turn of foot to quicken clear of the pack with another rival. He is likely to progress further and it is difficult to see him finishing out of the frame.

16:25- Golan Way is an interesting recruit to the Hunter Chase ranks and could take his rivals apart here, but, while he was generally tough and reliable under Rules, it is worth noting that he has refused to race before. With Golan Way likely to take up much of the pool, we will take him on with Habbie Simpson and Beggar's Velvet. Habbie Simpson was a useful hurdler as a novice and clearly retains some ability based on his win in this sphere at Wetherby last year, while Beggar's Velvet was fairly useful over fences and can make an impact in this type of race.

Selections:
13:40- 3, 5
14:10- 1
14:40- 6
15:15- 13, 14
15:50- 9
16:25- 2, 3
= 8 lines

Timeform UK SmartPlays: Wednesday February 12

"Radio Nowhere has been revitalised by the fitting of blinkers and put up a bold display of jumping on his chase debut at Newcastle..."

Timeform's three best bets for Wednesday all come from Musselburgh...

It's a handicap chase over two-and-a-half miles under consideration first (14:40) and it looks an interesting contest with a handful of contenders appealing as unexposed in this sphere. The pick of the bunch looks to be Radio Nowhere who has been revitalised by the fitting of blinkers and put up a bold display of jumping on his chase debut at Newcastle. He was narrowly touched off on that occasion and had run a creditable fourth over hurdles prior to that, suggesting Donald McCain may have got his measure. He looked a horse capable of significant improvement on his last start in December, and provided he's been freshened up over the intervening period he's capable of recording his first victory over the larger obstacles. There are others who merit respect in the shape of Hotgrove Boy and Brieryhill, both of whom are capable of better over fences too.

Next up it's a handicap hurdle, also over two-and-a-half miles (15:15) and its another horse whose benefited from the application of headgear. The cheekpieces fitted to Willie Hall in his last two starts seem to have done the trick, bouncing back to form after a string of indifferent performances when third at Sedgefield a month ago, and then winning at the track a fortnight later. The result of this is that he remains potentially well treated the pick of his form, and provided he is willing to continue his resurgence for William Amos he could prove ahead of today's mark. He's given narrow preference to make it two in a row, although Tweedo Paradiso caught the eye at Catterick last time and Some Lad, back from a break, has an excellent record fresh.

Our final bet of the day comes in the two-mile handicap hurdle (15:50) and the 8 lb rise Forced Family Fun received for his most recent win at Doncaster shouldn't be enough to prevent him from winning again here. He showed useful form on the flat, winning twice for Michael Bell and has proved equally adaptable for new handler John Quinn, who excels with these types. He made a winning start over jumps at Hexham before unseating in a minor event at Catterick. He was a creditable second in a similar contest next time out a Ffos Las, but put in a sterling effort on his handicap debut last time and has the profile and ability to make a significant impact in this sphere. He's taken to continue on his upward trajectory at the expense of today's opponents, although Figaro and Roman Flight are both worth bearing in mind.

Timeform Dubai SmartPlays: Meydan, Thursday February 6

"In the final contest at 18:15 it could be worth taking a flyer on Chil The Kite who shaped much better than the bare result on his reappearance and now has the services of Richard Hughes..."

Timeform's Dubai expert, Stephen Molyneux, provides you with three selections from Meydan...

My Freedom didn't get the run of things here on his reappearance and is well worth another chance in the opening thoroughbred contest at 15:15. His defeat of Solar Deity at Wolverhampton in October remains the race to be judging him on, that form franked several times subsequently, and My Freedom was never really given the opportunity to show what he could do behind Fulbright on his return, held up and not knocked about. He finished a neck ahead of Jamesie, who came out and won next time, and there is every chance of My Freedom doing the same granted a bit of luck in running.

The ageless Star Empire still seems to be getting better and he is the one to be on in the staying handicap at 17:05. He got the better of Ahzeemah in this corresponding event 12 months ago before finishing third behind the same horse next time, and then wasn't beaten too far by Cavalryman in the Dubai Gold Cup itself. He is 7 lb higher this time around, but his reappearance when staying on into third behind Sheikhzayedroad suggested he could be better than ever this season, a point he can prove back over this more suitable trip.

In the final contest at 18:15 it could be worth taking a flyer on Chil The Kite who shaped much better than the bare result on his reappearance and now has the services of Richard Hughes. He pulled his way round much of that contest won by Alexandra Palace, but was repeatedly denied a run up the rail and barely had a race, certainly doing more than enough to suggest he has returned in very good form. He was racing out of his grade for much of last season, not beaten far by the likes of Declaration Of War and Farhh in Group 1 contests, and this looks a good opportunity for him to gain a well-deserved win.

Wetherby Placepot: Saturday February 2

"Super Duty was a useful novice hurdler last term and looks set to be an even better chaser, getting off the mark over fences with an impressive success at Cheltenham in December..."

Timeform's Matt Gardner heads to Wetherby hopeful of a Placepot windfall...

13:00 - Renoyr, formerly trained by Elizabeth Doyle in Ireland, showed much improved form on debut for current connections when getting off the mark at Doncaster in December, travelling smoothly and being value for more than the five length winning margin. A 10 lb rise for that win looks to leave him well treated still and he seems sure to go well in an attempt to follow up but it is also worth sticking in Embsay Crag, who shaped well on return from a six month absence over C&D on his latest outing and is likely to come on for that run.

13:35 - Hunter chases are never easy and, with just two places to aim, at this contest is no different but we ought to progress by including both Palypso de Creek and Special Portrait. The former showed fair form when placed in all four outings in this sphere last year and added another point win to his tally when scoring for his new yard last month, whilst Special Portrait was prolific in hunter chases in 2012, winning four on the bounce, and it is possible that he was in need of the run at Kelso last time having been off the track for nine months.

14:10 - Mister Bricolage shaped encouragingly prior to falling heavily at Exeter on his hurdling debut but, of those to the fore of the market, preference is for Big Society, who got off the mark over timber at the third attempt last time despite the two miles and three furlongs faced that day seeming inadequate; the return to this sort of trip ought to suit and he remains open to improvement. Taking a bit of a flyer on Wolf Shield could pay dividend, with it worth bearing in mind the promise he demonstrated in bumpers. He shaped as if needing the run on his hurdling debut at this venue in October, not being knocked about in the straight, and he strikes as the type to do better at some stage.

14:45 - With likely favourite Arkdilly Witness a non-runner we have just two places to aim at, but we have a decent chance of doubling up with Farmer Matt and War On. The first mentioned has progressed well since being switched to handicaps, winning at Exeter and Ascot on his last two starts, and he could have yet more to offer whilst War On, who made the frame four times in Irish points last year, got off the mark in this sphere at this venue in November and seems likely to stay this far, so is of definite interest on his handicap debut.

15:20 - The Tim Easterby-trained Fourjacks makes plenty of appeal here but we need to save lines somewhere, so Super Duty goes in as a banker. The seven-year-old was a useful novice hurdler last term and looks set to be an even better chaser, getting off the mark over fences with an impressive success at Cheltenham in December. He is well worth a go in this company and could even go on to better things at some stage.
15:55 - A tricky handicap concludes proceedings, though the Sue Smith-trained Gansey looks a good starting point. The 11-year-old is a C&D winner who has looked as good as ever in finishing second on his last two starts and, although he isn't hiding anything from the handicapper, he seems more likely to run his race than many in this field. Whats Up Woody runs from 1 lb out of the handicap but his consistent recent profile makes plenty of appeal and he seems likely to make a good fist of grabbing a place.

Selections:
13:00 - 6, 9
13:35 - 4, 7
14:10 - 1, 10
14:45 - 5, 6
15:20 - 3

Timeform Radio Tips: Saturday February 2

"The more I look at the race, the more I’m inclined to believe that Mister Hyde remains on a lenient mark despite taking what looked a harsh 13 lb rise for winning at Kempton last time..."

Rory Delargy suggests a brace of bets at Sandown on Saturday...

Veterans' chases have become quite a welcome addition to the jumping calendar, with several old stagers allowed a more realistic chance of being competitive against horses of similar ilk, and Sandown stages such an affair on its all-chase card at 15:00. Several of these are sharply in decline, and neither Mad Max nor Gwanako look quite the horses they were when in the first flush of youth. Pigeon Island is another who has tasted glory on the biggest stage, but has had a lot of racing for one of his age, and the one who looks most likely to rediscover his best is Laura Young's Tail of The Bank, who is lightly raced and is only having his twelfth outing over obstacles today. He was a promising novice in 2010/11, when runner-up in the valuable Greatwood Gold Cup at Newbury, and has hinted that all his old ability remains in 2 runs this term. At Chepstow last time, he made a threatening move on the turn for home before a residual lack of fitness told, and a drop of 4 lbs for that run looks quite generous in the circumstances. He does need to prove that he can handle a right-handed track, as all his runs have come anti-clockwise, but that's a risk worth taking for a horse who may, rather strangely for a race like this, still have his best days ahead of him.

In the following contest, it's easy to give chances to most of the field, but the more I look at the race, the more I'm inclined to believe that Mister Hyde remains on a lenient mark despite taking what looked a harsh 13 lb rise for winning at Kempton last time. He proved on that occasion that he truly stays 3m (had been a weak finisher in the past), and I was particularly taken with how easily he seemed to jump out of very deep ground there. Conditions will again place a premium on accurate jumping, and in that regard, Mister Hyde looks solid - more so than Summery Justice, who would be my idea of the fly in the ointment, but can still make the occasional bad error. Brackloon High had no excuses behind the selection at Christmas, but has paid him a handsome compliment by winning over the same C&D next time, and that form was further boosted when Politeo, a place in front of Noel Chance's charge at Kempton, was successful at Wincanton during the week.  If those form lines can be believed, then Mister Hyde is still a step ahead of the assessor. Let's hope so.

Timeform UK SmartPlays: Saturday February 2

"Alfie Spinner has long looked like one who’ll benefit from a real test of stamina... and now 4 lb lower than at Sandown he looks very interesting among a field in which only five of the dozen entered are in the handicap proper."

There's a SmartPlay from each of Saturday's three National Hunt cards.

We start at Wetherby, in their first race at 13:00. It's a handicap hurdle that contains a fair number of horses in good heart, but there's every chance that none will be able to live with Renoyr. He looked very much a reformed character when easily winning a similar event at Doncaster on his first start for Malcolm Jefferson little over a month ago. On the bare facts, you might say that a rise of 10 lb looks fair enough, but when you consider that runner-up Blackwater King was a handicap debutant from a top yard and third-placed Party Rock was also starting out for a new yard there has to be the possibility that the form is well above average. Renoyr is accordingly well ahead on the adjusted Timeform ratings and will take plenty of stopping here if he's in anything like the same form.

We travel to Ffos Las for our next bet, in the West Wales National at 14:40. Much like in the case of Renoyr, we're basing our case partly on those our selection has been racing against as much as their bare form, as Alfie Spinner looked to suffer for trying to live with Katenko at Sandown on his latest start. That rival has since won a competitive race at Cheltenham in fine style and now looks bound for the Gold Cup, while Fruity O'Rooney, the other pace-setter at Sandown, was a fine second in the same contest. Alfie Spinner has long looked like one who'll benefit from a real test of stamina, albeit finding four miles just beyond him at the Cheltenham Festival last year, and now 4 lb lower than at Sandown he looks very interesting among a field in which only five of the dozen entered are in the handicap proper.

Finally, it's Sandown's all-chase card for SmartPlay number three, in their very last race at 16:40. It's a handicap which, quite frankly, looks out of place on a big Saturday card, but that only helps us out where selection Christopher Wren's concerned. He's far from bombproof, his jumping over fences looking none too assured thus far, but then again his whole chasing career up to now looks to have been about gaining experience (given an easy time when third at Warwick on his latest start) and he's now very well treated on his hurdles form. If he's able to step up again following a two-month break there's every chance Christopher Wren will have too much for his rivals.

Back Renoyr @ 5.04/1 in the 13:00 Wetherby

Kempton is the venue for all three of Wednesday's SmartPlays.

Timeform highlight a trio of SmartPlays on this evening's Kempton card...

Our first selection comes in the 18:05, where the improving My Name Is Sam is taken to open his account at the fifth time of asking. The three-year-old, trained by Ron Harris, took a big step forward when finishing third at Wolverhampton just under a fortnight ago, finishing best of all having been held up in a slowly-run race. Clearly things did not pan out in his favour that day but a return to six furlongs is likely to be in his favour, as is the stronger pace that a 12-runner field will hopefully ensure, and he has solid claims of boosting his trainers' excellent level-stakes profit at the track (+44.71 to a £1 level-stake in the last five years).

Yankee Storm (18:35) has gained all six of his wins on the all-weather, with his latest win in March last year coming over course and distance. His debut effort for the Michael Wigham yard at Lingfield late last month, after a nine-month absence, was not all that inspiring but there were much brighter signs on his latest start, also at Lingfield, where he travelled strongly before being badly hampered and finishing with running left. He may have yet more to offer and can get off the mark for his new trainer at the third time of asking.

The 20:05 looks a fairly open contest, but a chance can be taken on the Jeremy Gask-trained Laser Blazer. The four-year-old has shaped better than the result on a number of occasions, including on his last two starts when fifth and third at the course. In both cases he has been ridden somewhat aggressively, doing too much too soon and pressing on earlier than was ideal, catching the eye all the same. The cheekpieces worn on his most recent outing are in evidence once again, he should stay today's mile and a half trip and he remains on an appealing handicap mark, having dropped 7 lb from his opening BHA rating of 57.

Lingfield Placepot: Tuesday February 28

Daily Placepots RSS / / 28 February 2012 / Leave a Comment

The Queen's colours will be carried by our final leg banker today.

The Queen's colours will be carried by our final leg banker today.

"The drop in trip doesn’t strike as being an obvious move for Traveller’s Tales but she ought to have enough to see off her rivals..."

Timeform's Matt Gardner heads to Lingfield for Tuesday's crack at the placepot...

14:10 - It would come as no surprise were Always Eager to do better having been gelded and now switched to polytrack, but he was no more than modest as a juvenile and does have an absence to overcome. Saucy Cat has shown signs that she is going the right way in two starts for her new yard, particularly when staying on over C&D recently, and she remains unexposed. Conversely, Complex looks vulnerable to an improver for win purposes but has performed creditably on her last six starts (finished in the first three on each occasion) and ought to give her running once more.

14:40 - Anginola was in this headgear (visor) when winning and finishing fourth at Wolverhampton last month, but ran a poor race in first-time blinkers on her most recent start two weeks ago. A chance is taken that the returning visor will see a reoccurrence of her previous form, which would give her the edge on main rival Moment in the Sun.

15:10 - Difficult to dismiss any of these, but selecting both Maison Brillet and Ministry ought to ensure a safe passage. The former has been lightly raced since winning at Kempton in December 2010, but has shown that he retains all of his ability by kicking off 2012 with a trio of second-placed efforts, and there is no reason why he shouldn't go well again. Ministry's last two runs on the flat were his best efforts to date, winning at Kempton before finishing second at Wolverhampton, and was bought out of the John Best yard for 21,000 gns. He has since been hurdling, running his best race in that sphere on his last start, and he could well be up to making the first two.

15:40 - Barring non-runners there are three places on offer in the fourth leg, presenting an excellent opportunity to double-up. Katmai River has been knocking on the door of late, finishing second on his last three starts at Kempton, and the return to seven furlongs ought to suit. Buxton's BHA mark of 56 is very appealing, given his last win was achieved off a mark of 70, and it is worth taking the chance that he has been freshened-up by a two month break.

16:10 - Alkadi wouldn't need to be out of the ordinary to run well here but she was unraced for Godolphin, leaving Saeed bin Suroor in November last year, which is a very slight cause for concern. It's difficult to split Gold Falcon and Sugar Prince, and if Alkadi disappoints we may well be left with the two places at our mercy. Gold Falcon has shown just modest form in two starts to date, but signs of greenness on both starts suggest a bigger performance may be in the offing, and the return to this trip is likely to suit. Sugar Prince belied his odds to shape well on debut here, finishing fourth, and is another who should appreciate today's distance.

16:40 - Just the four runners for the final leg, and the Richard Hannon-trained Traveller's Tales is selected as a banker. She was gradually progressive in maidens last year, the soft ground a plausible excuse on her sole nursery start, and although the drop in trip doesn't strike as being an obvious move, she ought to have enough to see off her rivals.

Selections:

14:10 - 5, 6
14:40 - 1
15:10 - 2, 4
15:40 - 2, 5
16:10 - 2, 4
16:40 - 4
