Follow The Money: Pucker Up can lift spirits at Lingfield
Tuesday, May 21, 2013
Timeform Daily: Wednesday, Lingfield 15:00
"Highly Likely needs to prove he can cope with turf, but he's thrived in the care of Steve Woodman, and gets the benefit of the doubt..."
Timeform analyse the runner for Wednesday's 15:00 at Lingfield, a handicap over a mile and three furlongs...
Hurakan improved to win at Sandown (1¼m) in July and not disgraced final 3 starts in 2012. Nothing wrong with 2 comeback efforts in recent weeks either, and ought to be in the mix once more.
Double Cee won 3 times at up to 9f last year for Richard Fahey, but ended season out of form, and not fired over hurdles for new yard. Tailed off on return to Flat at Windsor, and plenty to prove now.
Foxhaven is a multiple turf winner who took advantage of a drop in the weights to win an 11f handicap at Kempton last month. Vulnerable off revised mark back on turf, but shouldn't be disgraced.
Steely improved for this yard in 2012, winning twice prior to good third in a 1¾m Salisbury handicap in July, Not straightforward, though, and well beaten either side of seasonal break.
Jolly Roger was much improved to land 6-timer over hurdles last summer, but hasn't looked ready to strike of what appears to be a lenient Flat mark, finishing only seventh of 10 at Newbury last time.
Highly Likely has got back to best for current yard, runner-up at Kempton 3 of last 5 starts, and shed maiden status when winning AW handicap here last month from Gladstone. Form on turf patchy, but should do better.
Drummond is still a maiden. Best effort this season when 2½ lengths fourth of 10 to Tawseef in handicap at Chepstow last time. Well treated on pick of 2012 efforts if he can build on that now.
Timeform 1-2-3:
1. Highly Likely
2. Hurakan
3. Foxhaven
Timeform Verdict: Highly Likely needs to prove he can cope with turf, but he's thrived in the care of Steve Woodman, and gets the benefit of the doubt. Hurakan is preferred to Foxhaven and Drummond for minor honours.

The 80/20 Bet: Sunday, Lingfield 16:15
Nick is off to the all weather meeting at Lingfield for today's Win and Place selection...
Today's 80/20 is Chella Thriller in the 16.15 at Lingfield. This filly beat Dolly Colman in good style over this course in January. She met interference two furlongs from home, but still managed to score with a little in hand.
I think she has more to offer and could run well at a decent price in this interesting handicap. At present she is trading at 10.09/1 on the exchange.

Follow The Money: Bridge That Gap at Lingfield
"Recommended Bets
Back Bridge That Gap @ 4.84/1 14:40 Lingfield
Lay Brick Red @ 3.65n/a 15:30 Musselburgh
Back Lexington Bay @ 5.24/1 16:30 Musselburgh"
Today's movers come from the meetings at Lingfield and Musselburgh.
We start with the 14:40 Lingfield, a 1m 2f Class 6 handicap, in which Bridge That Gap has been backed steadily from 6.25/1 in to 4.94/1. Probably the most significant point to make is that Adam Kirby has just two rides today - both for Roger Ingram (the other being Fonterutoli in the 15:40) with this partnership having only previously come together on half a dozen occasions resulting in form figures of 2-1-8-6-1-3. This horse has a record of a win and a second over his trip and with first-time cheekpieces applied too, it is not a surprise to see the support.
Our lay of the day takes the shape of Brick Red in the Musselburgh 15:30 who has drifted from an early 2.35/4 out to 3.65n/a. Given the ease with which Venetia Williams' charge has landed the spoils on his last two runs, one could reasonably expect the gelding to make it a hat-trick here. However, Brick Red now runs off 12lbs and 19lbs respectively higher marks here and having to give weight all round to some serious contenders (Calaf off bottom weight for first run in a handicap and the useful 5lb claimer Harry Derham might be worth a second look) may just prove too much today.
We stay over the border for our final selection - Lexington Bay in the 16:30 who has shortened from 8.415/2 in to 5.24/1. Having completed his three runs for a mark, this gelding makes his handicap debut and in addition has cheekpieces applied for the first time since his last flat win. The conspirators amongst us have added two and two together and hopefully come to the right answer here.

Follow The Money: Godolphin to get the goods at Lingfield
"Gowanharry may not be one to trust having previously been an odds-on flop in a weak Hamilton maiden."
Today`s movers are from the meetings at Lingfield and Catterick
We start at Lingfield where there has been a move in the 15:00 contest for Despatch, backed in from 9.48/1 to 4.63/1. Ralph Beckett's three-year-old makes her handicap debut today after being well beaten in maiden company on all three starts to date. Although hard to fancy on what she has shown so far, this well-bred filly starts off from a lowly mark and may improve for the step up in trip. Market support suggests this will be the case.
At Catterick, Gowanharry is today's negative having drifted out from 2.321/1 to 3.02/1 for the 15:10. Up 3lbs for last month's Newcastle win, Gowanharry may not be one to trust having previously been an odds-on flop in a weak Hamilton maiden. With that run hard to forget and a couple of consistent types in opposition a lay looks the call at the current odds.
It's back to Lingfield for our final mover where Silent Moment has been solid at the head of the market for their 16:00 handicap having touched an early 2.621/1 and now trades at 2.31/1. This fast improver from the powerful Saeed bin Suroor-stable stepped up on her maiden win when a runaway winner at Kempton last time. A 6lb penalty and a longer trip this afternoon should not stop her from following up

Timeform Daily: Winter Derby, Saturday, Lingfield 15:25
Race of the Day
/ Timeform / 23 March 2012 / Leave a Comment
Chris Wall's Premio Loco
"Proven Group race performer Premio Loco was narrowly touched off in this race in 2009 and looks sure to give supporters another good run..."
Timeform take a look at the feature race on Saturday, Lingfield's Group 3 Winter Derby run over a mile and a quarter...
Premio Loco was touched off in this contest in 2009. Largely creditable efforts either side of his Group 2 win at Doncaster in September and no reason to think he won't be thereabouts once more.
Black Spirit's last win came in 1m Sandown handicap in summer 2010. Largely held his own in better company since, rounding off with a fourth in Group 3 at Newbury in September and gelded in the interim.
Cai Shen's progress continued in 2011, registering second win of the year when making all in a 1¼m minor event at Doncaster in September. Well worth a try in this grade, but wide draw not ideal.
Circumvent's sole win in 2011 when landing a 9f Goodwood handicap in September, but good second in a listed contest over this C&D in November and no forlorn hope if on top of his game after a break.
Emerald Wilderness has been rejuvenated this winter, winning 3 handicaps over this C&D. Failed to sparkle both tries on a recent jaunt to Dubai, though, and this looks tough on return.
Junoob has been successful twice at up to 1½m at this venue since being claimed from Amy Weaver in December, having something in hand when capturing a listed race last time and not out of this by any means.
Loyalty won 6 times on polytrack in 2011. Good effort from a poor position when third to Junoob in C&D listed race in February, but unable to repeat it last time and this tougher still.
Lyssio Useful form when twice placed in listed races for Peter Schiergen. Matched those efforts when second at Meydan for new yard in January, but below par at that venue since and tried in a hood now.
Our Joe Mac has been resurgent since cheekpieces fitted, winning 1¼m York handicap in August. Not disgraced on return from a spell hurdling when mid-field behind Junoob over C&D last month and visor applied now.
Riggins made most of a drop in the weights over 1m here in November. Ran to a similar level when attempting repeat win in a listed race at Kempton next time, but yet to prove he stays this far.
Suits Me - NR
Myplacelater thrived in 2010, winning 5 times up to 1½m. Better than form figures suggest when mixing it in good company last year and one to consider on first run for Richard Fahey.
Sooraah progressed into a genuine listed performer in 2011 and fine effort when landing a 1m Meydan handicap in February. Below par in Group 3 last time, though, and stamina to prove on first try at 1¼m.
Vivacious Vivienne showed further progress when twice making frame in listed races last term. Promising return when third over an inadequate 1m on polytrack this month and place prospects back at this trip.
Timeform 1-2-3:
1. Premio Loco
2. Myplacelater
3. Cai Shen
Timeform View: Proven Group race performer Premio Loco was narrowly touched off in this race in 2009 and looks sure to give supporters another good run for their money after proving himself as good as ever last term. Myplacelater was better than her form figures suggest last year and also makes the shortlist on her first run for Richard Fahey, alongside Cai Shen and Circumvent.

Jamie Lynch: Why risk Dubai when you can pray it's safe at Lingfield?
Timeform Debate
/ Jamie Lynch / 23 March 2012 / Leave a Comment
The scenes at last year's Festival
"It's a far cry from Britain where, this week, Gloucestershire Police hailed the Cheltenham Festival as a success after there were 'only' 24 arrests on the racecourse."
It's a big day for Lingfield and a big week for Timeform's Dubai expert, as explained by a green-eyed Jamie Lynch....
My friend and colleague Stephen Molyneux (Mollo) is flying off to Dubai next week to cover the World Cup meeting for Timeform. How he managed to clear the fit and proper person checks is a mystery of similar proportions to The Giant Bolster leading at the last in a Gold Cup, though my pointed jealousy is soothed by the knowledge that it will be all work and little or no play, not so much because that's the sort of guy Mollo is, but more because that's the sort of businesslike place Dubai is.
You'll be able to read here on betting.betfair, or maybe hear on Timeform radio, or maybe see on CNN, all of Mollo's views and a percentage of his adventures during the week, and it will all go like clockwork, free of incident and transgression, as we've thoroughly researched the procedures and protocols: the dos and don'ts of Dubai. Basically, Mollo will be fine and able to report for duty so long as he doesn't walk the streets bare-chested, indulge in a public display of affection, secretly photograph the locals, cross dress, get drunk in a public place, or make an obscene gesture.
Simple. Simple and admirable. It's a far cry from Britain where, I'm sad to say, I've been in bars where prizes are handed out for all of the above. It's a far cry from Britain where, this week, Gloucestershire Police hailed the Cheltenham Festival as a success after there were 'only' 24 arrests on the racecourse. It's a far cry from Britain where, even in stockbroker belt Surrey, a special committee was set up last month because anti-social behaviour had got so bad in Lingfield. In Lingfield!
What was once leafy Lingfield has now become lawless Lingfield. The East Grinstead Courier reported that - and this is absolutely true, word for word - 'a Scout hut has been daubed with graffiti and youngsters have been drinking in Jenner's Field.' Never fear, though, as Lingfield has its own Robocop in the shape of task-force leader PC Barry Reece. Outlining his objectives, Barry said - and again this is absolutely true, word for word - 'we have a list of people who could be responsible for these crimes; if we catch whoever is causing the problems, we have a lot of options, including delivering letters to their parents by hand.'
Does Martin Scorsese know about this ganglands story?
Forget Dubai, the dos and don'ts of going to Lingfield on Saturday are all the more consequential: do take a flak jacket and don't take the Vicarage Road route past Jenner's Field. But if you can get past the tipsy teenagers and Kate Adie then you're in for a treat, because it's a brilliant card, featuring some proper horses and top riders, on a day that's becoming a seminal point in the racing calendar: goodbye jumps and tweed, hello linen and speed.
For so long the Paul Ross to turf racing's Jonathan Ross, the all-weather now has a big day all to itself, and this year's is bigger and better than ever. Adam Brookes has already done us an in-depth preview to the main event, the Winter Derby, but the undercard of two listed races are just as high on quality and competition.
When he's not analysing the Dubai form or hastily unpacking his speedos, camera, miniskirt and chest wig, Stephen Molyneux is one of our principal handicappers, specialising in sprinters, and he has promised me that Medicean Man will run a huge race in the Hever Sprint Stakes at 14:55. It's easy to see the positives.
Medicean Man has done some of his best work when fresh and on polytrack, admittedly tried only at Wolverhampton so far, but Lingfield should suit him equally well and, moreover, this specific race is likely to play out ideally for his latecoming style. A field including Bajan Tryst, Even Stevens, Fratellino and Noble Storm means they're bound to go quick, and the faster the pace the better for Medicean Man, who has generally improved right through his career. Oasis Dancer is the danger and probable favourite, but he has a penalty for winning a lesser listed event last month, and this will be his first ever go at five furlongs.
Given the crime-culture story currently surrounding Lingfield, Scarface would be an appropriate runner on the day. While we don't have a Scarface, we do have a Gatepost, who carries a hefty scar on his off-hind following an altercation with the very thing after which he's named. He lost his way later last season but started it with a bang, winning his first two starts prior to shaping second-best behind Power in the Coventry at Royal Ascot. That form puts him in with a big chance in the Spring Cup at 14:25, and I'm hoping that the winter absence will have reinvigorated him - the fact Gatepost is still in the 2000 Guineas suggests that Mick Channon (who's already had eight winners this year) retains plenty of faith in him.
If Medicean Man and Gatepost both win, I can celebrate by swigging champagne in the streets half-naked while attempting to cop off with various women as they hurry by, all completely legal and above board. Think about that, Mollo, as you take off in first class on Tuesday morning.

With just a week until the British Flat Turf season gets underway, Timeform look ahead to a weekend of racing that includes the Group 3 Winter Derby on the all-weather......
The news, released on Wednesday March 21, that the majority of racing in the 2012 QIPCO British Champion Series is to be covered by sectional timing deserves to be well received by anyone who wishes to see British racing playing a prominent role on the world stage......
It is said that there are few certainties in life other than death and taxes. After a hectic Cheltenham Festival, jumps handicapper Phil Turner can add a few more to that list- whichever lane you change into during a motorway traffic jam immediately becomes the slowest, there are far more lows than highs when you're a lifelong Evertonian and, of course, Big Buck's will continue to remain unbeaten over hurdles.........

Follow The Money: Fontwell fancies and a Lingfield lay
/ Follow The Money / 07 March 2012 / Leave a Comment
Can we find two winners and a losing lay?
"Although a fair amount has to be taken on trust Puffin Billy is well-related and hails from the Oliver Sherwood yard, who are profitable to follow in bumpers."
Today's Follow The Money comes from the meetings at Lingfield and Fontwell.
We start at Lingfield where Thundering Home has been on the drift all morning in the 1m4f Claiming Stakes at 14:40, out to [4.9] from [3.25]. Although a winner over the distance last time out, the five-year-old faces a couple of rivals better off on official ratings today, with the Luke Morris-trained Country Road looking particularly well-fancied. The lack of support suggests he will fail to follow up.
We go to Fontwell for our first back where Sea Saffron has supported all the way down from [18.5] in to a current [7.2] in the 2m6f Handicap Chase at 16:30. At first glance this veteran chaser doesn't appear an obvious choice, having been well beaten in his last three starts. However he's been dropped 9lb since his last run, has the assistance of top conditional Brendan Powell in the saddle and is trained by the in-form Susan Gardner, who has two winners and a second from her last four runners. The positive move suggests a return to form is expected.
We stay at the figure-of-eight track for our last selection where there has been significant looking support for the unraced Puffin Billy in the bumper at 17:00, now trading at [2.8] from an early [4.6]. Although a fair amount has to be taken on trust the four-year-old is well-related and hails from the Oliver Sherwood yard, who are profitable to follow in these types of races. The punters appear to be confident he can outwit some more experienced rivals.

Lingfield Placepot: Tuesday February 28
Daily Placepots
/ Matt Gardner / 28 February 2012 / Leave a Comment
The Queen's colours will be carried by our final leg banker today.
"The drop in trip doesn’t strike as being an obvious move for Traveller’s Tales but she ought to have enough to see off her rivals..."
Timeform's Matt Gardner heads to Lingfield for Tuesday's crack at the placepot...
14:10 - It would come as no surprise were Always Eager to do better having been gelded and now switched to polytrack, but he was no more than modest as a juvenile and does have an absence to overcome. Saucy Cat has shown signs that she is going the right way in two starts for her new yard, particularly when staying on over C&D recently, and she remains unexposed. Conversely, Complex looks vulnerable to an improver for win purposes but has performed creditably on her last six starts (finished in the first three on each occasion) and ought to give her running once more.
14:40 - Anginola was in this headgear (visor) when winning and finishing fourth at Wolverhampton last month, but ran a poor race in first-time blinkers on her most recent start two weeks ago. A chance is taken that the returning visor will see a reoccurrence of her previous form, which would give her the edge on main rival Moment in the Sun.
15:10 - Difficult to dismiss any of these, but selecting both Maison Brillet and Ministry ought to ensure a safe passage. The former has been lightly raced since winning at Kempton in December 2010, but has shown that he retains all of his ability by kicking off 2012 with a trio of second-placed efforts, and there is no reason why he shouldn't go well again. Ministry's last two runs on the flat were his best efforts to date, winning at Kempton before finishing second at Wolverhampton, and was bought out of the John Best yard for 21,000 gns. He has since been hurdling, running his best race in that sphere on his last start, and he could well be up to making the first two.
15:40 - Barring non-runners there are three places on offer in the fourth leg, presenting an excellent opportunity to double-up. Katmai River has been knocking on the door of late, finishing second on his last three starts at Kempton, and the return to seven furlongs ought to suit. Buxton's BHA mark of 56 is very appealing, given his last win was achieved off a mark of 70, and it is worth taking the chance that he has been freshened-up by a two month break.
16:10 - Alkadi wouldn't need to be out of the ordinary to run well here but she was unraced for Godolphin, leaving Saeed bin Suroor in November last year, which is a very slight cause for concern. It's difficult to split Gold Falcon and Sugar Prince, and if Alkadi disappoints we may well be left with the two places at our mercy. Gold Falcon has shown just modest form in two starts to date, but signs of greenness on both starts suggest a bigger performance may be in the offing, and the return to this trip is likely to suit. Sugar Prince belied his odds to shape well on debut here, finishing fourth, and is another who should appreciate today's distance.
16:40 - Just the four runners for the final leg, and the Richard Hannon-trained Traveller's Tales is selected as a banker. She was gradually progressive in maidens last year, the soft ground a plausible excuse on her sole nursery start, and although the drop in trip doesn't strike as being an obvious move, she ought to have enough to see off her rivals.
Selections:
14:10 - 5, 6
14:40 - 1
15:10 - 2, 4
15:40 - 2, 5

Lingfield Placepot: Tuesday April 26
Daily Placepots
/ Sam Randall / 26 April 2011 / Leave a Comment Walter Swinburn trains the banker of the day, Hurricane Lady.
"Hurricane Lady looks banker material given her lenient-looking opening mark"
A much calmer day of racing today and it's over to Lingfield for the Placepot...
14:30 - It's disconcerting that Bin End is already dropped to selling company, but he's got the form to easily get us through the first leg if he's anywhere near his best, so he has to be included. It's also worth putting the consistent Eagle Nebula in as a back-up.
15:00 - An uncompetitive claimer, several impossible to fancy, and Rudegirl, who's having her first start since leaving Nigel Tinkler, is sure to go close if ready to go for this reappearance. The race-fit Fifth In Line should give her most to think about.
15:30 - Easily the most interesting race on the card, plenty having scope for better now tackling handicaps, but Hurricane Lady looks banker material given her lenient-looking opening mark. Walter Swinburn's runner showed plenty of promise amidst greenness in her three two-year-old starts and there's definitely more to come.
16:00 - Songsmith progressed steadily on turf last year and possesses the form to take this contest if he can prove himself as effective on polytrack. One who doesn't have any question marks regarding the surface is Poyle Punch, who was third in a maiden here earlier in the month and will be suited by today's longer trip, so at least one of them should see us through the maiden.
16:30 - This is as competitive a handicap as you're likely to see at this grade and it's possible to make a case for plenty. The couple with the most persuasive claims, however, are the consistent Cavitie, who has been placed on his last four starts, and Far View, who'll be well suited by the return to this trip.
17:00 - Another trappy contest to finish off with, but it's impossible to get away from the claims of Mr Maximas, who is as solid as they come at this level. Easily the most interesting runner, however, is Lytham, who had little go right when down the field at Kempton last time.
