Timeform Daily: Tuesday, Yarmouth 15:40

"King Of Jazz has run in some good handicaps last 3 seasons, and though yet to win one, has shaped well both starts this year..."

Timeform analyse a decent handicap over seven furlongs at Yarmouth on Tuesday...

Khubala did well at 3 yrs, winning 3 6f handicaps before fine effort in defeat in Ascot contest in October. Pedigree offers hope he'll stay 7f and could go on again this term.

Princess Of Orange won 1m Newmarket handicap on good to firm last summer. Well held in couple of stronger races as year ended and needs to pick up again on return with mark looking on stiff side now.

Spirit Of Sharjah is a hold-up performer who has fine turn of foot when on song. Fended off sole rival in a 7f minor event at Kempton (7f) in January, but not in the same form since, and others make greater appeal.

Karam Albaari came up short in pattern/listed races at 3 yrs after making winning debut at Kempton (6f) in September 2010. Missed 2012 and can only be watched on return.

Noble Citizen didn't quite kick on from Goodwood second early last season. Has dropped in the weights and should make presence felt in some good handicaps this term but may need this.

Swiss Cross is now 5 lb below last winning mark and better than bare result both starts back on turf this month, finishing well behind Ajjaadd at Epsom latest. Leading claims.

Galician has gained all 3 wins over 6f but has stamina for this trip and ran a blinder when touched off by York Glory at Pontefract last week. Leading claims from same mark if overcoming highest draw.

King Of Jazz has run in some good handicaps last 3 seasons, and though yet to win one, has shaped well both starts this year at Doncaster over 6f. Just as effective at 7f and well worth considering.

Fast Finian has done well on AW for this yard, winning 3 times in 2012. Some good efforts in defeat since latest success but must carry that form back over to turf now. Blinkers tried.

Bayleyf improved throughout 2011, winning 6f nursery at Glorious Goodwood. Been given big chance by the handicapper after quiet 2012 and excuses for Lingfield defeat in January.

Comrade Bond has gll 3 wins over C&D but no great record fresh and may just need this.

Timeform 1-2-3:
1. King Of Jazz
2. Galician
3. Swiss Cross

Timeform Verdict: Galician ran a blinder at Pontefract and Swiss Cross will find an opening again before long, but perhaps this could be the day King Of Jazz gets an elusive first handicap success following on from 2 eye-catching efforts at Doncaster.

Timeform UK SmartPlays: Tuesday April 9

"Few horses will have suffered more than Punching when Southwell racecourse was temporarily closed over the winter as a result of flood damage and the nine-year-old is fancied to make up for lost time returning to the venue this afternoon..."

Horses racing at all three of Tuesday's UK meetings feature in today's SmartPlays...

Few horses will have suffered more than Punching (15:30) when Southwell racecourse was temporarily closed over the winter as a result of flood damage and the nine-year-old is fancied to make up for lost time returning to the venue this afternoon. A ten-time winner at the track (all but one over today's course-and-distance), his handicap mark has dropped to a career-low one as a result of four below-par efforts on polytrack since his last race here and all looks set fair for him to add to his tally back racing on his favourite surface.

Ten minutes later, further up the M1, the race named in honour of Pontefract course regular and four-time winner at the track Jamaican Flight can go the way of John Quinn's Hidden Justice (15:40), who returns to the level having won a couple of strong juvenile hurdles over the winter. Although subsequently well beaten in the Triumph at Cheltenham, he's unexposed at this sort of trip on the Flat and can take advantage of a lenient-looking mark on his way to better things.

AP McCoy heads up to for an attractive set of rides and can bring proceedings to a successful end thanks to Master Rajeem (17:25). Having made a winning start to his career in bumpers at Sedgefield in February, the gelded son of Street Cry just failed to follow up at that venue the following month and with the Alan Swinbank yard currently in fine fettle, he can return to winning ways.

Timeform SmartPlays
Back Punching @ 6.05/1 in the 15:30 at Southwell
Back Hidden Justice @ 4.1n/a in the 15:40 at Pontefract
Back Master Rajeem @ 2.68/5 in the 17:25 at Carlisle

Carlisle Placepot: Tuesday April 9

"It says plenty about leg three that Sleep In First, winner of a couple of pretty wretched races on his last two starts and now a stone higher in the weight than for the first of those successes, is only around the 1.75/7 mark."

There are tricky elements wherever we go for today's Placepot, but the small fields at Carlisle look the most easily managed.

14:20 - The opening novice chase can quickly be reduced to three, lack of ability essentially ruling out the bottom three on the racecard. Of those left, Dolatulo is clearly the best option, his chasing experience the most extensive in the field and his suitability for the trip assured. At a different course, we might have given more weight to Alta Rock's chasing experience, but the chances are that the much more able Drill Sergeant will cope with the demands of Carlisle's soft fences on his chasing debut and therefore he finds his way into the perm.

14:50 - The first of three legs which contain a bare seven runners, and although several are unexposed our choices in this race aren't too difficult to arrive at, with seemingly harshly-treated handicap debutants like Right To Rule and Somerset Island not really Placepot types. Although we're nominating Takaatuf first, he isn't necessarily our first choice, his inclusion based on the idea that this stiff 17 furlongs on better ground will bring out the best in him. A choice between Yorkist and Mojolika, second and first respectively over C&D last time, presents itself for our other spot, with the fact that Mojolika rather overcame the run of things that day, coupled with the idea that Takaatuf may not allow Yorkist his own way up front this time, leading us to land on Mojolika.

15:20 - It says plenty about leg three that Sleep In First, winner of a couple of pretty wretched races on his last two starts and now a stone higher in the weight than for the first of those successes, is only around the 1.75/7 mark. We could try and second-guess some of his rivals, but no clues are immediately forthcoming and it's much easier, and cheaper, just to bank on the in-form favourite.

15:50 - Despite a fairly big field, it looks as though there won't be much pace in this race (a view backed up by Timeform's In-Play Hints), something which could play into the hands of Nicene Creed, who was ridden prominently when landing a gamble last time. He's still very well handicapped on his best and has shown himself able to back up good runs in the past, so he's a sure thing for our perm. It's a case of hope rather than projection that Polarbrook will be ridden with sufficient enterprise, but the impression left last time (on his first start for Donald McCain, having left Kim Bailey) was so strong that we can overlook the vastly different trip unknown in terms of tactics.

16:25 - The final seven-runner affair in the 'Pot' (assuming we have no non-runners in the last between the time of writing and 16:55), but more significant here is that five of the seven have either a squiggle or an 'x' attached to their master rating. Super Ally is one of the exceptions, and although his jumping isn't exactly the most assured he's generally consistent and put in one of his better rounds over Carlisle's fences back in November, so he's worthy of a place. We could include both Lord Villez and Etxalar to pretty much guarantee passage to the last leg, but that might get expensive so we'll turf out Etxalar, who is shorter in the betting despite looking a bit vulnerable raised 11 lb for his C&D win last time.

16:55 - William Money is another case of a horse that is ordinary value in the win market, but is so because he's been solid of late and therefore he's worthy of inclusion in our perm irrespective of the fact he'll carry more of the pool than he'll deserve to. Second selection, Foot The Bill, has been placed on three of his four starts this season; he looked to be outpaced over something similar to this trip on his reappearance, though that was at Market Rasen and this stiffer track should be more suitable.

Selections:
14:20 - 2, 3
14:50 - 4, 6
15:20 - 4
15:50 - 1, 10
16:25 - 1, 4
16:55 - 3, 7
= 32 lines

Cheltenham Festival 2013: A working person's guide - Tuesday

"My Tent Or Yours is worth a place market lay at around 1.574/7 as, although visually impressive in his wins to date, he's yet to be asked to race at breakneck speed, and his best form has come on flat tracks."

Forced to work for a living nowadays, Jack Houghton has had to come up with profitable punting strategies that don't rely on hours of form study. Having outlined the tenets of successful Festival betting earlier in the week, here he previews Tuesday's card, where he reckons that many-people's-banker My Tent Of Yours is a massive lay.

William Hill Supreme Novices' Hurdle

Applying our speed-rating rule eliminates half the field, leaving us considering Cause of Causes, Champagne Fever, Jezki, Pique Sous, Dodging Bullets and River Maigue as likely contenders. Short-odds favourite, My Tent Or Yours, is worth a place market lay on this basis alone at around 1.574/7. Although visually impressive in his wins to date, he's yet to be asked to race at breakneck speed, and his best form has come on flat tracks.

Of our six contenders, Champion Bumper winner Champagne Fever (9.08/1) and Cause of Causes (40.039/1) look the best value, and I'll be splitting my stake between them in the win market.

Racing Post Arkle Challenge Trophy Chase

Speed ratings do little to make the market for this one any clearer, our test returning the top three in the market of Simonsig, Overturn and Arvika Ligeonniere. And given that they have all shown strong form at the Festival, we're not much closer to an answer. If I was forced to bet, I'd take Simonsig, as Overturn is not guaranteed to be at his best on the ground, and Arvika Ligeonniere has seemed a little chancy with his jumping. But you're never forced to have a bet, so I'd rather sit this one out.

JLT Specialty Handicap Chase

Our speed-rating test eliminates all-but eight of this 24-runner field, and ruling-out those with dodgy Cheltenham form leaves us with the most likely contenders of Knockara Beau (18.017/1), Fruity O'Rooney (13.012/1), Nadiya De La Vega (19.018/1) and The Package (18.017/1). Given the healthy odds available about all four, I'll be splitting my stake and backing all of them.

Stan James Champion Hurdle

Much like the Arkle, our tests do little to help us here, with the top five in the market all having demonstrated the ability to run fast, and to run well at Cheltenham. At the prices, though, I really like Zarkandar at around (5.39/2). He posted a fast time on soft ground in the International in December, and a repeat of that performance would likely be enough to win this.

Glenfarclas Handicap Chase

Another big field quickly reduced by applying the speed-rating rule, we are left with A New Story (20.019/1), Sizing Australia (17.016/1) and Wedger Pardy (46.045/1) when also ridding ourselves of those with questionable Cheltenham form.

OLBG Mares´ Hurdle

Although a few of these have run quick times, only two offer any kind of guarantee that they will act at Cheltenham: Quevega (1.695/7) and Une Artiste (8.88/1). And although it seems sacrilegious to oppose Quevega in her bid for a fifth consecutive win in this race, I'll be backing Une Artiste in the win and place markets with some hope that she can cause an upset. Although still able to win races, Quevega is not at her very best on softer ground, conditions Une Artiste excels in.

Rewards4Racing Novices´ Handicap Chase

Restless Harry (60.059/1), Hazy Tom (19.5n/a) and Shangani (9.617/2) have posted beter speed figures over fences than the rest of these, but given Hazy Tom's dodgy showing at the Festival last year, I'll be splitting my stake between the other two. A return to his best form would make Restless Harry difficult to beat in this, and Shangani is still open to further progression.

Cheltenham Festival SmartPlays: Tuesday March 12

"Our Mick really does boast solid form, has had his whole campaign mapped around this race and looks sure to launch a strong challenge..."

Nothing can match the excitement of the opening day of the Cheltenham Festival, and Timeform have chosen three selections to hopefully get you off to a flying start...

You will hear many people peddle the stat that the Supreme Novices' Hurdle is a poor race for favourites, but each horse must be assessed on their individual merits and there has never been a contender with stronger credentials than My Tent Or Yours. Nicky Henderson's charge was an ultra-impressive winner of the valuable Betfair Hurdle last month, producing a performance that earned him a Timeform rating of 168p, and he fully deserves his place at the head of the market. To put that huge figure into context, no novice has ever entered the Supreme Novices' Hurdle with such a high rating; in fact, no horse since the ill-fated Golden Cygnet in 1978 has achieved a higher rating in the race. To put it simply, a mere reproduction of the level of form My Tent Or Yours produced in the Betfair Hurdle would almost certainly see him win; you are getting odds-against about an odds-on shot. True, there are a host of unexposed horses in opposition, many of whom remain open to significant improvement, but My Tent Or Yours sets a phenomenally high standard, rated at least a stone superior to his rivals, and represents good value to get you off to the perfect start.

For our final two SmartPlays we will get our teeth stuck into a couple of formidable-looking handicaps, starting with the JLT Specialty Handicap Chase, the third race on the card. Our Mick has been well backed in the lead up to the Festival, unsurprisingly so in light of his tremendous effort as a novice, finishing third in this contest last year. He has only had the one start this term, unshipping Jason Maguire at the third-last fence when vying for the lead with Katenko on Trials Day, but he shaped like a horse that could be ahead of his mark, racing with zest at the head of affairs. The Jonjo O'Neill-trained Merry King is something of a surprising runner, considering he looked set to appear in the National Hunt Chase on Wednesday, but he is a most intriguing participant, bringing some very strong handicap form to the table. He may be capable of throwing down the strongest challenge to Our Mick, but Donald McCain's contender really does boast solid form, has had his whole campaign mapped around this race and looks sure to launch a strong challenge.

Our final SmartPlay comes in the final race on the card as we select The Druids Nephew to take advantage of a lenient-looking handicap mark. It is undoubtedly a concern that he is the only horse that has managed to win for the Andy Turnell yard this year, but he still has enough in his favour to recommend him as a bet. A good sixth in last year's Albert Bartlett Novices' Hurdle, The Druids Nephew has progressed as expected this season, registering some useful efforts over fences, notably when beating Grandioso by 10 lengths at Wincanton last time. Considering it was only a three-runner affair, in which two horses finished, the handicapper, understandably, didn't get carried away with the bare form. However, the subsequent exploits of Grandioso, who has won twice since and has a BHA rating of 145, makes it look like The Druids Nephew could have been let in lightly off a mark of 135. The form of his first start over fences, beaten a short-head by the RSA-bound Hadrian's Approach, also looks like a strong effort on paper and he can hopefully land this final race.

Epsom Placepot: Tuesday August 28

One might have expected Mayo Lad to be a clear favourite following his easy win at Leicester last time (for which he has been raised just 4 lb)...

With the Bank Holiday comedown still in effect, a low-lines approach could be best at Epsom this afternoon. Keith Melrose offers his perm...

14:15 - A few interesting sorts in this nursery, not least Romanoff and Epsom Flyer, but there's no doubting how solid Lisa's Legacy is and she rates as a reasonable banker prospect. She's got used to the rough-and-tumble of racing in maidens, actually suffering interference when shaping a clear second-best behind a useful prospect last time. Her BHA mark looks fairly lenient even before factoring in the improvement she's bound to show one day over seven furlongs plus, so hopefully this single arrow is all we'll need in leg one.

14:50 - Last-time-out winner Clear Praise is a bigger price than might have been expected, that possibly down to the perception that he's best over five furlongs, but he's shown enough over this trip (albeit chiefly on polytrack) that stamina surely won't be an issue, especially considering he was a respectable fourth over C&D just over a year ago. Second spot goes to Baby Strange, who's been even more consistent than recent form figures imply, undone by the draw at Goodwood last time. He's something of a professional loser, but another finish in the first three will do us fine, while he showed enough over this C&D at the Derby meeting to prove his effectiveness around here.

15:25 - There's no doubt that Van Percy holds the best form on offer, but with three places currently up for grabs we can use a bit of poetic licence. Royal Skies has a good deal more experience than the favourite, and has even done it round here (third over seven furlongs last time out); with this longer trip sure to suit and there not being any obvious challenge for the lead, we can put our faith in Mark Johnston's charge.

15:55 - One might have expected Mayo Lad to be a clear favourite following his easy win at Leicester last time (for which he has been raised just 4 lb), the feeling being that, like Clear Praise, the market has cast his effectiveness at the trip into doubt. I don't feel the return to seven furlongs will be a problem though, considering the way he travelled at Leicester and the fact that he was good enough to win a six-furlong handicap at Wolverhampton not so long ago, while his consistency this season seals the deal. Lolita Lebron, rather sparked into life by the addition of a hood on recent runs, probably rates as the biggest danger and therefore also gets a spot.

16:30 - A good number of these are unexposed, but there's reason to be sceptical about the temperament of both Twelve Strings and Seven Veils, so preference is for Novirak and Jane Lachatte. Novirak is a four-year-old, but has made just five starts so far, only two of which really count it could be argued, his first two outings all about experience and his reappearance seemingly needed for fitness. He was fourth in a decent handicap at Doncaster last time, suggesting that the step up to this trip may draw more from him in the way he shaped. Our other selection Jane Lachatte has the advantage of good course form (two wins and a second from three starts), but there is some concern in that all her best efforts so far have come on softer than good and she's been a bit too free for her own good on recent starts. Even so, she's evidently in form and is well enough treated to get right into the mix today.

17:00 - The claims of If I Were A Boy are obvious, but by the same token she's likely to carry a significant slice of the pool and, with a couple of fairly attractive sorts against her in this, we can oppose her in hope of a slip-up. First in is Miss Cap Estel, who has never yet raced over this far but, being by Hernando and related to a number of winners beyond a mile, shouldn't have any problem with the trip. Second for our perm is Welsh Nayber, a consistent if perhaps not progressive three-year-old who may never have faced the undulations of Epsom but has found plenty of joy at Brighton, which provides as close to an approximant test as you're likely to get on these shores.

Selections
14:15 - 4
14:50 - 3, 5
15:25 - 5
15:55 - 2, 3
16:30 - 1, 6
17:00 - 6, 11
