Gordon Richards Stakes: Al Kazeem makes winning return

Al Kazeem returned from a 357-day lay-off with victory in the Gordon Richards Stakes...

Last seen when winning the Jockey Club Stakes at Newmarket, Roger Charlton's charge travelled well throughout the 10-furlong heat in the hands of James Doyle.

Ektihaam set out to make virtually all but Al Kazeem was cruising in behind turning for home before finally making his move with a furlong to go.

Thomas Chippendale made it a three-way finish by launching his challenge down the outside and while Al Kazeem possibly felt his long absence in the dying strides, he hung on by.

Thomas Chippendale claimed a narrow second with Ektihaam third.

Al Kazeem has entries in races such as the Coronation Cup and Prince Of Wales's Stakes this term but Charlton is targeting a trip to Ireland at the end of May.

Charlton said: "I was a bit apprehensive because a lot of mine will come on for the run. He looked great and that was a good effort.

"We know he gets a mile and half, but a mile and a quarter is a more commercial distance, as long as he can win good races over that distance, but he will have entries over a mile and a half as well.

"In the immediate future, I think he will go to the Curragh for Tattersalls Gold Cup."

Doyle is expecting his mount to progress for the run and said: "Since he's come back he's been galloping great at home and doing everything right.

"We expected this today. Today is a stepping stone to bigger things and he couldn't have done it any easier.

"It was his first run for ages so I didn't want to ask him to do too much too soon and when he got to the front he pricked his ears and lugged into the rail."

Thomas Chippendale pleased connections on his return but is now set for a step up in trip.

Barry Simpson, racing manager to owner Sir Robert Ogden, said: "The best three on form were first, second and third so you'd have to say that was a very good run. I think he might step up a couple of furlongs now."

Follow The Money: International makes plenty of appeal at Ffos Las

Recommended Bets

Lay Super Duty @ 3.613/5 15:20 Wetherby
Back Kaylis Aramis @ 6.25/1 15:45 Ffos Las
Back Internationalapeal @ 2.962/1 16:50 Ffos Las

Today's movers come from the meetings at Ffos Las and Wetherby...

We start at Wetherby where Super Duty continues to prove easy to back in the 3m1f Novice Chase at 15:20, currently available at 3.613/5 having been 2.942/1 this morning. This Donald McCain-trained runner showed good form over hurdles last season, including when finishing second behind Simonsig at Aintree, and got off the mark over fences last time out at Cheltenham in testing conditions similar to those he will face today. However there is a feeling the seven-year-old prefers better ground and he also has to prove his stamina stepping up half a mile in trip, whilst it's also said he may improve for the run. With his rivals including the interesting chasing debutant Goulanes and the hat-trick seeking Fourjacks, the drift gives cause to take him on today.

We move to Ffos Las for our next selection where there has been notable support for Kaylis Aramis in the 2m4f Handicap Hurdle at 15:45, now trading at 6.25/1 from an early 11.010/1. The six-year-old has yet to get his head in front in seven career starts, three over hurdles this season, but posted an improved display last time out when looking the winner before failing to find anything in the finish. That run was over 3m and the drop in trip should suit today, whilst a 2lb rise in the weights after his handicap debut looks fair enough. With form in the heavy conditions, the move suggests he can lose his maiden status here.

We go back to the Welsh venue for our final piece of advice where the price of Internationalapeal has continued to contract in the Bumper at 16:50, now on offer to back at 2.962/1 from 4.3100/30. The five-year-old finished a three and a quarter length-second on his debut under rules at Chepstow in early January, encountering the heavy ground he will again face today, the form of which is yet to be proven. However that was a seemingly encouraging run and trainer Rebecca Curtis is a force in this sphere and won with her most recent runner at Cheltenham last Saturday, whilst also having an impressive 41% strike rate when teaming up with champion jockey Tony McCoy. With main market rival Heath Hunter weak in the market the gamble suggests those stats can improve further.

York Result: Mince makes merry on the Knavesmire

Mince marked herself as a potential Pattern-race performer with a thoroughly impressive success in the Garrowby Stakes at York...

Winner of a Listed event at Pontefract last time, the Roger Charlton-trained filly was sent off the 2-1 favourite to follow up in this six-furlong event.

James Doyle was always going well aboard the filly and when he gave the signal, Mince pulled three and a half lengths clear to score a cosy victory.

Colour Of Love and Free Zone were separated by just a neck for the minor placings.

Charlton enjoyed a Group One placing when Bated Breath claimed a fine third in the Sprint Cup at Haydock and he tweeted: "Might have replacement for Bated Breath next year with Mince whooosh!"

The Punter's In-Play Blog: Mickelson makes a move

Our man's kicking himself for not backing Phil Mickelson earlier but he's not cutting his nose off to spite his face. He's looked at the stats and evaluated the opposition, and with a round to go Phil the Thrill is the man to beat at the BMW...

11:00 - September 9, 2012

With a round to go, both this week's events are still very open and extremely hard to predict.

Four players, Pablo Larrazabal 4.77/2, Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano 5.39/2, Graeme Storm 7.613/2, and Scott Jamieson 7.87/1 are locked together on -12 at the top of the KLM Open leaderboard, with Sweden's Peter Hanson just one shot back. At the BMW Championship, just two shots separate the top-seven players and I'm kicking myself over my trading, or should I say lack of trading yesterday!

Having not got matched on Larrazabal overnight on Friday at the over-ambitious 26.025/1, I really should have just taken the more than acceptable 24.023/1 still available yesterday morning but as always, hindsight's a marvellous thing. If I had to pick one now it would be Pablo, he hasn't made a bogey since his 5th hole on Thursday and he'll relish playing with fellow Spaniard Gonzo in the final group.

Although I like Pablo's chances, it looks far too open to get involved. I can't have Storm, who led by five at one point on the back-nine yesterday, but other than him, there are at least five others with a plausible chance. The likes of last week's winner, Richie Ramsay, Danny Willett, Henrik Stenson and Nicolas Colsaerts all have the class to go very low and make up ground and Peter Hanson could be playing with a freedom few could match.

How the Swede was able to concentrate on his game yesterday is beyond me. His 18 months-old son was taken to hospital in Florida with a virus and it sounded grave. Mercifully, this article suggests he's improving all the time and if that's still the case, a relieved Hanson could be a dangerous beast today.

At the BMW Championship, Rory McIlroy still heads the market after somehow remaining in-contention at Crooked Stick but if he's going to take back-to-back titles he's going to have to improve today.

The big mover yesterday was Phil Mickelson and if I'm cross with myself over missing Larrazabal's move, I'm absolute livid about Lefty. Having backed him the last two weeks at handsome odds, I dug my heels in deep and stubbornly refused to get involved this week at what I thought was a bit of a skinny price before the off. I can forgive that, after all, it looked like a good decision for two days but not backing him yesterday morning at 46.045/1, when he was clearly lurking with intent and when Rory and Tiger Woods were dominating the market, despite not impressing in round two, was absolutely unforgivable.

So what now? I've had to move on and look at the event objectively this morning and get over not backing Phil yesterday. And now that I've done that, who do I fancy to win the event? Phil Mickelson.

Rory sits alongside Lee Westwood one shot behind Vijay Singh and Phil Mickelson and if he gets his game in order he'll still take all the beating but there has to be a serious doubt he can do so. He's not played well for two days and he's no certainty to turn it around in 24 hours.

Singh hasn't won for four years and Westwood is never a value play in the mix. His conversion rate is just not good enough, whereas Mickelson's is outstanding...

It's impossible to argue against his chance today. He's led or co-led with a round to go 33 times since 1996 and he's gone on to win 23 times. And of those 33 occasions, he's only twice failed to finish 1st or 2nd! When he's been tied for the lead, as he is now with Vijay Singh, he's won seven times and failed to win just six times. I'm an idiot for not getting him onside at halfway but I'm not going to cut my nose off to spite my face. I know it's a very tight leaderboard but Mickelson is a proven class-act closer and 4.84/1 is just too big.

Dustin Johnson, just two off the lead and currently trading at 11.5n/a is a big danger and he's another I looked at hard and should have gotten onside yesterday but you can't back them all.

09:30 - September 8, 2012

After two impeccable bogey-free rounds, Graeme Storm holds a three-shot lead at the KLM Open but he looks vulnerable to me. Leaderboard and betting as at 9.20, listed below.

Graeme Strom -11 5.59/2
Peter Hanson -8 4.77/2
Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano -8 -7.6n/a
Scott Jamieson -8 18.5n/a
Pablo Larrazabal -6 22.021/1
Shiv Kapur -6 55.054/1
-5 or worse the remainder

It's a tricky puzzle to solve and after much deliberation, I've decided not to add to my portfolio at this stage. All of my pre-event picks have disappointed but my bet on Gonzo on Thursday afternoon has worked out very well, thanks to an impressive second round 65, I'm happy to stick with him and see what today brings. I did try and back Larrazabal overnight at 26.025/1 but I didn't get matched and I'm not prepared to take lower.

In addition to the players listed above, Nicolas Colsaerts, on -5 and trading at just 10.09/1, Martin Kaymer (-5), who shot a disappointing second round 71, defending champ Simon Dyson (-4), and in-form Englishman Danny Willett (-5), all have to come into the equation but they all have to fly over the weekend and hope for some help from those ahead of them.

Storm is in a very commanding position right now and if he can break par over the weekend he'll take the world of beating. Dyson won with a 12 under-par 268 total last year and an in-form Martin Kaymer, who won by three strokes, only got to -14 two years ago, so you'd have to think a couple of under-par rounds may well be enough for Storm.

Hilversumsche is a tight and fiddly track where making ground is tough. There are birdies out there but it's keeping the errors off the card that's crucial. Storm is the only man bogey-free so far this week but can he keep it up? I doubt it.

Strom is notoriously poor in-contention and I'll be very surprised if he stays out in front. Ryder Cupper Peter Hanson is an understandable favourite but I never get him right. He too isn't exactly convincing in the mix and whenever I back him he finds a way to get beat. Jamieson looks reasonably priced but he hasn't been in-contention for a long time and he's still looking for his first European Tour win, so all things considered, I'm happy to stick with Gonzo.

I just hope he stays patient. After two rounds he leads both the driving accuracy and greens in regulation stats (the two stats I felt were most important before the off) and if he remains patient with the putter, he could be the one. If I wasn't already on, I'd be backing him this morning.

Over at the BMW Championship, Rory McIlroy kicked off round two with a pair of birdies and threatened to take control of the event but it was hard work after that. He didn't play as well as he had done on day one and I'm a little worried that trend could continue today.

Vijay Singh, on 13, leads by one over Rory, Tiger Woods and Ryan Moore, with Lee Westwood and Bo Van Pelt on -11 and my man, Graham DeLaet and Seung-yul Noh on -10.

With birdies flying in left right and centre, the wet weather has ruined this event somewhat. Crooked Stick would be a proper test in dry and breezy conditions but it's pretty toothless in these conditions.

08:45 - September 7, 2012

With just three weeks to go to the Ryder Cup, European captain, Jose Maria Olazabal, saw at first hand yesterday that Martin Kaymer's hard work on the range has paid off. Playing alongside the German, as well as Belgian wildcard pick Nicolas Colsaerts, Jose must have really enjoyed watching his biggest concern constructing a wonderfully crafted opening 65 at the KLM Open.

Whether Kaymer, who's had a poor summer by his own very high standards, can kick-on for the remainder of the week remains to be seen but I'm certainly kicking myself for not having a saver at least. He won here two years ago and I'd written in my preview that I'd suspected an improvement but it's no use crying over spilt milk.

Prior to round two, Kaymer traded at around 4.84/1 - a price I was happy to turn my nose up at. If he goes on to win so be it but I'm not prepared to dive-in now.

Of my five pre-event picks, three shot first rounds in the 60's, with Berndt Wiesberger, who shot 68, faring best but he trails first round leader, Graham Storm by fully five shots.

I've added one more pick, backing Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano, who won his maiden title here in 2005, at an average of 60.059/1 during round one. After opening up with a three under-par 67, like Kaymer and early pace-setter Storm, he's playing his second round this morning.

Before I move on to events across the pond, I have to mention Paul Krishnamurty's Find Me A 100 Winner column yet again. Two of his three picks have started superbly and having spoken to him on Tuesday, I know he also considered Scotland's Craig Lee, who has also begun the week well.

The TV guys have been playing up the FedEx Cup playoff series since its inception but I have to admit, it's never really grabbed me yet but this year that could all change. With world number one, Rory McIlroy and former number one, Tiger Woods, going hell for leather at the BMW Championship in round one yesterday, there was a real buzz to the tournament and excitement will reach fever-pitch if they carry their rivalry forward to East Lake for the FedEx Cup decider in a fortnight's time.

It's not just the Rory and Woods show though, far from it. Four players opened up at a rain-softened, wind-bereft Crooked Stick with eight under-par 64's - Rory, local lad Bo Van Pelt, world number four Webb Simpson and another of my picks, outsider Graham DeLaet. Tiger Woods sits alongside Vijay Singh on -7, with world number two, Luke Donald, amongst those lurking on -6.

We look set for a cracker but don't get caught out and miss all today's action. With poor weather forecast, play has been brought forward today and it starts at 8.00am local time, 1.00pm UK time. Sky have brought their coverage forward to accommodate the change in schedule and they go live at 5.00pm. And if Woods, Rors and co are going to pick-up from where they left off yesterday, I should get yourself in front of the telly.

Having been extremely bullish about Rory's chance this week and about his new-found dominance over Tiger, I'm as relieved as I am pleased with his excellent start but I'm a little wary about today. If there is to be a reaction to Monday's win at the Deutsche bank Championship, it could be today.

And there's a real danger that I could get wrapped up in the Rory-Tiger duel and miss a move from elsewhere. Simpson and Donald are very obvious dangers to the first two in the market and I'll also have an eye on the in-form Dustin Johnson later on. He recovered well after a poor start yesterday to get to -4 and he might just muscle-in on the argument too.

Great Voltigeur Stakes Result: Buick makes all on Thought Worthy

Thought Worthy just held off the late challenge of favourite Main Sequence to land the Group 2 Great Voltigeur Stakes.

Thought Worthy just held off the late challenge of favourite Main Sequence to land the Group 2 Great Voltigeur Stakes...

Thought Worthy, sent off at a Betfair SP of 11.50, was given a brilliant tactical ride by Buick who set only a modest gallop in the early stages of the mile-and-a-half contest, but he quickened the pace before the home turn and caught one or two of his rivals a little flat-footed.

His advantage was eroded as they headed inside the last couple of furlongs, with favourite Main Sequence the biggest threat. But the John Gosden-trained Thought Worthy held on to claim the Group 2 prize by a neck.

Buick said: "He galloped well and stayed very well. He battled on well and stuck his head out. You have to admire a horse like this because he always tries his best."

The result has had an impact on the St. Leger market, with Thought Worthy now second favourite, behind Camelot, at 15.5n/a.

Earlier on the card, Dundonnell, sent off at a Betfair SP of 2.94, won the Group 3 Acomb Stakes. Roger Charlton's colt cruised into the lead under James Doyle after Afonso De Sousa had made the running, but, having looked likely to win easily, he showed his inexperience and allowed Steeler to get to within three-quarters of a length at the line. Afonso De Sousa finished a respectable third.

Winning jockey James Doyle said: "I was delighted with him. He's still very babyish, but he's helped me out there as the Aidan O'Brien horse (Afonso De Sousa) skipped away from us. I found myself in front too soon, but he's got a lot of gears."

Ebor Handicap: Motivado makes final cut

Ante-post favourite Motivado just about made the cut for the Ebor at York on Saturday, scraping in as number 19 in the 20 runner affair.

Ante-post favourite Motivado just about made the cut for the Ebor at York on Saturday, scraping in as number 19 in the 20 runner affair...

He only gained his place in the line-up thanks to a 4lb penalty for winning a handicap at Glorious Goodwood three weeks ago. The Luca Cumani-trained Qahriman, who was also prominent in the ante-post market, is only first reserve. A Boy Named Suzi is second reserve. Following the live draw, Motivado was handed stall 8, whilst Qahriman will break from stall 1 if making it into the race.

There were no worries for the John Gosden team involved with Duke of Edinburgh Handicap winner Camborne (stall 14) as the four-year-old is near the top of the weights. They are headed by the Jessica Harrington-trained Steps To Freedom (stall 13). The County Kildare handler is also responsible for Bob Le Beau (stall six).

There are three other Irish challengers in the shape of Dermot Weld's Sense of Purpose (stall 22), Tommy Carmody's Royal Diamond (stall two) and the Aidan O'Brien-trained Harrison's Cave (stall nine), who got the last place in the line-up.

Champion Irish jumps trainer Willie Mullins has decided to run dual Royal Ascot victor Simenon in the Lonsdale Cup on the same card instead of the Ebor. English-born French-based trainer John Hammond is represented by Hammerfest (stall 21), who was runner-up to Camborne at Royal Ascot.

Among others in a fascinating renewal are Godolphin's Willing Foe (stall 16), course specialist Crackentorp (stall 17), 2011 Northumberland Plate winner Tominator (stall 10) and Number Theory (stall four), winner of the Old Newton Cup at Haydock. Dreamspeed, who finished fourth to Number Theory at Haydock, has been given stall 11.

Motivado tops Timeform's ratings for the prestigious handicap and is likely to be favourite for the race. You can bet on the contest here.

Randwick Guineas: Mosheen makes history

Australia RSS / / 19 March 2012 / Leave a Comment

Mosheen has completed the Australian Guineas – Randwick Guineas double

Mosheen has completed the Australian Guineas – Randwick Guineas double

"Mosheen.. is currently the second highest Timeform rated three-year-old filly over 1600m to 2000m, behind Atlantic Jewel (128+)."

The records keep tumbling for crack filly Mosheen who overcame difficulties last Saturday to win the G1 Randwick Guineas over 1600m at headquarters...

The win by Mosheen made her the first filly to win the Randwick Guineas since it's inauguration in 2006, replacing the time honoured Canterbury Guineas that had been previously run over 1900m dating back to 1935.

In addition Mosheen is the first horse to have won the Australian Guineas - Randwick Guineas double, as well as the first filly to win the treble of Group o1 races, VRC Oaks-Australian Guineas-Randwick Guineas, something we may not see achieved again for a very long time.

It takes an exceptional filly to win those three races and Mosheen has certainly proved herself that. However, to some extent she still lives in the shadow of another filly, the unbeaten Atlantic Jewel who treated Mosheen with such contempt in the 1000 Guineas over 1600m at Caulfield last October.

Admittedly Mosheen has improved a great deal since then, but so too has Atlantic Jewel and even trainer Robert Smerdon who regards Mosheen as the best horse he has trained, is not keen to engage Atlantic Jewel anytime soon.

In its short history the Randwick Guineas has quickly made a name for itself as quality race, capable of producing good horses.

The 2011 renewal won by Ilovethiscity has not produced as many subsequent winners as the other renewals have but Queensland Derby Shootoff winner was in that field.

However the 2010 renewal produced subsequent G1 AJC Derby winner Shoot Out, G1 Epsom Handicap winner Captain Sonador, G1 Rosehill Guineas winner Zabrasive, G1 SA Derby winner Kidnapped and G1 Railway Stakes winner Gathering.

The previous four renewals have produced nine subsequent G1 winners and 20 overall Stakes winners - not bad for a race only in its infancy.

Last Saturday's Randwick Guineas was looked upon as a match between G1 winning gelding Manawanui and Mosheen, however with 200m to travel neither looked a chance of victory.

Manawanui who again travelled close to the lead failed to detonate when put under pressure while Mosheen was still some five lengths off the lead and looking for clear running.

Once rider Dan Nikolic angled Mosheen into the open she accelerated like the good horse she is quickly gathering up the leaders to win surging away by a neck.

The final assessment of the race was not straightforward. In this instance the margin is not reflective of the merit of the win plus second and third placegetters Said Com and Laser Hawk were both coming off restricted class races both factors tending to hold the race back to a value under the five year average.

Others factors in the mix when assessing the quality of the race are, a bunched finish, the fact Mosheen was coming off a career peak effort at her previous start fourteen days prior and those efforts are seldom backed up next start. Mosheen also suffered buffeting during the race that cost her valuable ground.

Consequently Mosheen ran to a 115+ Timeform rating some nine pounds under her previous peak figure while Said Com and Laser Hawk ran to vastly improved ratings of 118 and 117 respectively.

Interestingly fourth placegetter Ambidexter ran to his master value while Manawanui continues his current flat line ratings profile around nine pounds under his peak Spring rating.

In respect of Manawanui, maybe the arduous Spring campaign that saw him "spent" when narrowly downed by Helmet after a titanic struggle all the way up the Caulfield straight is having an impact on him regaining his best form?

Certainly there are signs emerging this campaign with both Helmet and Manawanui this could be the case. Both are currently well below form.

I will be surprised if the form from the Randwick Guineas does not hold up and again prove to be a strong reference over the coming weeks.

As for Mosheen, she is currently the second highest Timeform rated three-year-old filly over 1600m to 2000m, behind Atlantic Jewel (128+). Quality Sydney filly Streama has a Timeform rating of 122 at 1600m, but is yet to be tried over a middle or staying distance.

Mosheen's immediate target will be the G1 Vinery Stakes over 2000m at Rosehill in two weeks time where she races against her own age and sex. The opposition will be easier than she raced against in either of her last two outings and she looks certain to start very much in the red.

Under those circumstances, it is hard to see her improving her master rating past 124 in that assignment, but the AJC Oaks (her next probable race) could be a different story as she will meet improving New Zealand Oaks winner Silent Achiever.

Robin van Persie's form makes him increasingly unlikely to stay

Premier League RSS / / 07 March 2012 / Leave a Comment

A brave performance but yet another exit. Robin van Persies' Arsenal couldn't quite get past Milan.

A brave performance but yet another exit. Robin van Persies' Arsenal couldn't quite get past Milan.

"But the rumour mill it is a-turning. And it’s not good news for Arsenal. As with any outstanding player at any underachieving club, the vultures are circling. Van Persie’s Emirates contract expires in 2013 and the Dutchman has already stalled on talks of a new deal."

He can't stop scoring and has admitted his own form is 'insane' and whilst that has helped Arsenal out of many a sticky situation, it has also led to the vultures from Barcelona, Madrid and Manchester circling the Emirates...

This year's Arsenal season review DVD won't necessarily be one for the Emirates faithful to watch back at regular intervals over forthcoming years. We've only just entered March and the Gunners are already out of the FA Cup, out of the running for the Premier League and, despite a gallant showing against AC Milan last night, out of the Champions League. But one member of the Arsenal ranks in particular will have a lot to savour on a personal level when the season is out. It doesn't take a genius to work out I'm talking about Robin van Persie.

With 32 goals in 38 appearances for the Gunners so far this campaign, the Dutchman is not just on fire, he's a blazing inferno - incinerating all who come before him. He has single-handedly earned Arsene Wenger's side 15 points over the course of the Premier League season, without which Arsenal would be languishing between Sunderland and Norwich in 12th place.

As it is, the Gunners are at [1.56] on Betfair for a top four finish and are at [2.82] to pip Chelsea and Tottenham to third place.

It will come as little surprise that van Persie is currently favourite on Betfair to take the Premier League Golden Boot crown this season, at [1.16].

He's already netted 22 times in the league this season, including hat-tricks in Arsenal's 7-1 drubbing of relegation favourites Blackburn and 5-3 win over top four rivals Chelsea. That's an astonishing contribution from the man who struggled to get into double figures in each of his first four seasons in English football.

And his form is good news for Holland too, who will be looking to avenge their 2010 World Cup final disappointment at the European Championships this summer. Already, van Persie is the [10.5] favourite to top the goalscoring charts in Poland and Ukraine, just ahead of Bayern Munich's German hitman Mario Gomez at [11.5], who himself has 26 goals to his name in just 31 appearances this season.

But the rumour mill it is a-turning. And it's not good news for Arsenal. As with any outstanding player at any underachieving club, the vultures are circling. Van Persie's Emirates contract expires in 2013 and the Dutchman has already stalled on talks of a new deal - postponing them until the summer.

This season's hot property is thought to have caught the eye of both AC Milan and Juventus, not to mention Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona, as well as moneybags Manchester City. To put it simply, there's unlikely to be a shortage of offers flooding in to the Emirates come the opening of the transfer window.

And while Arsenal can break the bank to keep Robin van Persie in North London, what they can't guarantee is trophies. The last club honour the Dutchman won was back in 2005; meanwhile former Arsenal team-mates Samir Nasri, Cesc Fabregas and even Emmanuel Adebayor are all in the hunt for silverware this campaign.

Most Arsenal fans would agree the squad that has been assembled, disassembled and reassembled time and again by Arsene Wenger is not strong enough to mount a serious assault on the FA Cup, let alone the Premier League or European honours. Whilst the likes of Per Mertesacker and Gervinho are solid enough, they are little match for the Vincent Kompany and Ashley Youngs of this world.

If the Frenchman is to persuade the 28-year-old that the Emirates is the place to be, he first needs to persuade the Arsenal board that they need to splash the cash on more than just a renewed contract for van Persie.

Betfair Free Friday Results: Zarkandar makes winning return at Newbury

Zarkandar (centre) won the Betfair Hurdle at Newbury

Zarkandar (centre) won the Betfair Hurdle at Newbury

"Running from a BHA mark of 151, last season's Triumph Hurdle winner looked potentially thrown-in..."

Champion Hurdle hopeful Zarkandar landed Newbury's Betfair Hurdle on Friday, whilst Long Run got back to winning ways and Sprinter Sacre enhanced his already lofty reputation...

Turning into the Newbury straight, Zarkandar did not look the most likely winner, with jockey Ruby Walsh asking the five-year-old to try and pick the leaders up. Emerging between rivals at the final flight, Zarkandar's stamina really came into evidence, and he gradually asserted his authority on the field.

Running from a BHA mark of 151, last season's Triumph Hurdle winner looked potentially thrown-in, but the dawdling early pace was unlikely to play to his strengths. Darlan, under Tony McCoy, was arguably travelling best turning for home but took a crashing fall at the third-last, hampering eventual runner-up Get Me Out of Here, with Raya Star and Sire de Grugy filling the remaining places.

Zarkandar is sure to improve for this seasonal return and can presently be backed at [7.4] for the Champion Hurdle.

The Nicky Hednerson-trained Long Run, winner of the King George and Gold Cup last season, gained his first win of the term in the Betfair Denman Chase as he beat stable mate Burton Port, returning from over a year on the sidelines, and What A Friend into second and third respectively.

Long Run had come up against a resurgent Kauto Star on his two previous starts this season, in the Betfair Chase and the King George, but with that opponent not in the line-up he managed to get back to winning ways.

Long Run heads the Gold Cup market at [3.55], whilst Burton Port, who put up an excellent performance on his return, is available at [13.0] and What A Friend at [50.0].

Sprinter Sacre, also trained by Nicky Henderson, gained his third win from as many starts over fences when easily landing the Betfair Super Saturday Chase. He had been extremely impressive in his previous starts but, up against his elders, including French Opera and Hold Fast, this was expected to be a more thorough test.

However, Barry Geraghty was motionless throughout onboard Sprinter Sacre, the six-year-old simply strengthening his position at the head of the Arkle market at [2.36].

Donald McCain: What a difference a week makes

Donald McCain RSS / Donald McCain / 04 November 2011 / Leave a Comment

Weird Al is now on course for the Betfair Chase on November 19

Weird Al is now on course for the Betfair Chase on November 19

"He hasn’t had much continuity through his career for a number of reasons but, fingers crossed, everything looks fine at the moment...."

A week on from Weird Al's Charlie Hall Chase win, Donald McCain reveals exclusively that he will now head to the Betfair Chase at Haydock on November 19. Donald also gives updates on some of the other big guns in the stable in his third weekly column.

What a difference seven days makes - after the disappointment of the previous week, last weekend was one to remember with Weird Al's win in the Charlie Hall a thrill for all at the stable.

I was delighted with the way he did it and I thought Timmy [Murphy] gave him a great ride - he really only knew he was in a race from three out.

He seems to have come out of the race very well, which was obviously a slight concern given the problems he has had over the years. He hasn't had much continuity through his career for a number of reasons but, fingers crossed, everything looks fine at the moment.

The plan for him now is to head for Haydock for the Betfair Chase on November 19 - he is owned by some local lads and we have taken the view that the best time to take on Long Run and Kauto Star could be when they are having their reappearance.

It's certainly an exciting time - it sounds a bit cocky but he really didn't seem to have much of a race at Wetherby and there were still signs through the race that he was a bit green. There is definitely a big engine there though and I couldn't be more pleased with him.

This is going to be a quieter weekend than I was expecting - we had plenty entered up but some wanted softer ground and a few wanted better ground! There are plenty bubbling under and ready to go though, and this does look the calm before the storm.

Wednesday is going to be a big day for the stable with Peddlers Cross due to make his chasing debut at Bangor - he is in at Exeter as well, but that is just in case the Bangor ground were to come up very fast.

I am looking forward to it as much as you can look forward to a horse making its chasing debut - particularly one of his ability - and he is in grand form at home, has schooled well and is just the consummate professional.

We know he is top class and hopefully he will get the job done and we can then start worrying about what comes next.

You may have seen that Overturn was entered in the Elite Hurdle at Wincanton but he is going to bypass that and head for the Ascot Hurdle on November 19.

Ascot has been the plan for him for a while now and although the Wincanton race has cut up, I just felt he wasn't quite ready for it.

Finally, I have some positive news regarding Jason Maguire, who has been out of action since that horrible fall in August.

He says he feels great in himself and has been at the yard riding out and schooling. He received the all-clear from his specialist earlier in the week and now it is just a case of when Dr Turner gives him the green light - hopefully we won't have too long to wait.

Weekend Runners, 9am Saturday

Don't forget to check out my column at 9am Saturday for all my Weekend Runners, including my best chances.

Betfair customers had two reasons to celebrate this weekend; not only did New Star Columnist Donald McCain's best chances both win, but they also returned a bigger Betfair SP than the industry......

Donald has three runners at Carlisle on Sunday and a couple of them look to have leading chances....

Donald's two best chances last weekend were both non-runners, but he's hoping for a better time of it with his second Betfair column......

Matteo Manassero was a handy winner for more than a few Ten To Follow contestants

It should come as no surprise to learn that none of the teams in our competition had last night's [1000.0] PGA Tour winner Brendan Steele. However, dozens of teams included Matteo Manassero, who landed the Malaysian Open. This week's events the Volvo China Open and The Heritage.

Mike Sexton Makes WPT Table

Bay 101

The man who has been the voice of the WPT for years will be at the TV table of one of the WPT events for the first time ever. Mike Sexton managed to final table at the Bay 101 Shooting Star event. The poker pros at the table will have their work cut out for them - Sexton is not called the Ambassador of Poker for no reason. While Sexton won’t have an easy time of it during the poker game as he is starting as the lowest chip stack, he is an experienced poker pro and has a good shot at bringing home a win.
