Wolverhampton Placepot: Friday March 22

"Our other selection is Monsieur Pontaven, who has also been more solid this year than his form figures give him credit for."

With so much doubt surrounding the turf meetings this morning, today's Placepot perm comes from the evening card at Wolverhampton.

17:55 - We're going to try and keep things light on today's Pot, so for all this opener is a four-runner affair we're going to bank on Secret of Success. None of her opponents would appear to have anything like her potential, while she looked professional enough on her debut to suggest that inexperience is no more than a minor concern. What's more, she may get and easy lead.

18:30 - Unfortunately, this leg is also down to four now, while it's a much tougher one to call, too, with three of those that remain arriving in good form. We're therefore going to take Admirable Duque, Jezza and Waving, fairly safe with the idea that Cash Injection won't win.

19:00 - Baltic Prince is a worthy favourite, his form having taken off on his last two starts, while the likelihood is he'll cope with this longer trip given the way he stayed on over six last time, though he's possibly shorter than he deserves to be, while we could do with getting at least one favourite out. The alternative is to bank on Actonetaketwo, who has run well to place on her last two starts and is the only one likely to be asked to make the running in this heat.

19:30 - This three-year-old handicap is simply too competitive to allow us to bank. The good news, though, is that we can also avoid putting in likely favourite Khudoua, who isn't much of a Placepot prospect on account of his absence, acknowleding he's bred to be much better than a BHA rating of 74. Pairumani Prince probably wouldn't be that high on the list for win purposes, but he's shown himself consistent (won three in a row prior to creditable fourth on return from a break last time) and his pedigree suggests that a step up to this extended nine furlongs may yet draw some more improvement from him, especially considering he has the benefit of a recent run behind him. Second spot goes to Diletta Tommasa, who has had excuses whenever she's run below form and could still be ahead of her mark raised just 2 lb for her win last time.

20:00 - A last-time out win means that Angelena Ballerina is as short as she should be to win this race, she's been more consistent so far in 2013 than her overall record implies and she's therefore a good Placepot prospect even considering fairly skinny odds. Our other selection is Monsieur Pontaven, who has also been more solid this year than his form figures give him credit for. He's unproven beyond an extended mile, but the way he's been shaping this season he shouldn't find today's trip too far.

20:30 - This is the best race on the card, yet mercifully we can probably get away with a banker to round off our perm. My Son Max is both solid and adaptable in terms of trip; his very best form has come over slightly further than five furlongs, though the chances are that only trouble in running has held him back from running right up to form on his last two starts. Bank on My Son Max to see us home.

Selections:
17:55 - 1
18:30 - 2, 3, 4
19:00 - 5
19:30 - 3, 5
20:00 - 1, 10
20:30 - 1

Cheltenham Festival SmartPlays: Friday March 15

"The potentially ferocious gallop should suit Marshal Zhukov ideally and he looks just the type to thrive in a contest such as this..."

Timeform suggest a trio of plays for the final day of Cheltenham 2013...

There are three that stand out on form in the opening race on the final day of Cheltenham 2013, namely Far West, Our Conor and Rolling Star, and our selection comes from that trio. The Paul Nicholls-trained Far West makes plenty of appeal with him being unbeaten in the UK but, for all that he showed more speed than anticipated when beating River Maigue at Ascot last time, this represents by far his stiffest task to date so he is left to one side. Fellow French import Rolling Star commands plenty of respect following his success in a Grade 2 at this venue in January, when beating Irish Saint by two and a quarter lengths, and he is clearly open to improvement but Our Conor boasts more experience over timber and is open to just as much progress, so he is the one for us. Our Conor, who was useful on the Flat, is unbeaten in three starts over hurdles and was tremendously impressive when taking the step up to Grade 1 company in his stride at Leopardstown last time, beating Diakali easily by five lengths. He is by no means short of speed but has plenty of stamina on the dam's side of his pedigree, being a half-brother to the useful staying chaser Gidam Gidam, so he should cope with the demands of this stiffer track and he rates as an exciting prospect.
The Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys' Handicap Hurdle is yet another seemingly imponderable Festival handicap, though there is a difference here as one makes an abundance of appeal. The horse we are quite happy to place our faith in is Gevrey Chambertin, a full-brother to Grands Crus who is unbeaten in three starts over hurdles and has improved with each outing. The five-year-old made his handicap debut at Wincanton on his most recent outing in January, making a mockery of his opening BHA mark of 130 as he slammed his rivals by seven lengths, winning easily and, such was the impression created that day, he is well worth marking up above and beyond the bare form. The Paul Nicholls-trained Salubrious, who is also lightly-raced and boasts some strong form lines, and Toner d'Oudairies, who finished second in this race 12 months ago off a 2 lb lower mark, head a plethora of dangers but the David Pipe-trained Gevrey Chambertin, who strikes as the type that will continue to improve, boasts leading claims and seems certain to go close.

The concluding race of Cheltenham 2013 will be the Grand Annual, a notoriously difficult handicap to solve. Nicky Henderson, who was successful in the race that is named after his father with Bellvano last year, has no less than six strings to his bow this time around, with Tanks For That and Kid Cassidy arguably the two most interesting. Alderwood, who landed the County Hurdle last season, has been touted by many as a likely winner of this race but we are quite happy to be against him here, as he is not certain to make up into as good a chaser as he was a hurdler and it was disappointing that he could not defy a mark of 135 (races off 140 here) at Punchestown last time despite being relatively well supported. Instead we will side with the Caroline Keevil-trained Marshal Zhukov, who was a fairly useful hurdler but has already shown himself to be better over the larger obstacles in just five attempts. The seven-year-old has been labelled in some quarters as headstrong, a description that is not far from the mark given that he has raced freely in virtually all of his races since switching to this sphere, but what he has also done is jump well, an encouraging sign given the demands of this race. The potentially ferocious gallop should suit him ideally and he looks just the type to thrive in a contest such as this.

Back Gevrey Chambertin @ 6.411/2 in the 16:40

Timeform Daily: Doncaster Cup, Friday 14:20

Saddler's Rock may have disappointed at York, but that was surely a one-off looking at his overall record and he is taken to repeat last year's win...

Timeform look ahead to the Group 2 Doncaster Cup, staged over two and a quarter miles at 14:20...

Colour Vision is an improved performer in 2012, backing up his Group 3 Sagaro Stakes success with a gutsy display to land Group 1 Ascot Gold Cup. Third under a penalty in Goodwood Cup since, and concedes weight again.

Aaim To Prosper is a smart performer, runner-up in a listed race at Sandown 2 starts back, though form still falls short of what is required in this. Also has to put a very poor effort in the Goodwood Cup behind him.

Askar Tau won this race in 2009 and has run to a similar level on a couple of occasions this term, including when second to Saddler's Rock in the Goodwood Cup. One of lesser efforts at York last time.

High Jinx is a progressive 4-y-o, winning handicap at Newmarket in June and finishing a fine second to Times Up in the Lonsdale Cup at York last time. Extra 2f shouldn't be a problem and one to consider.

Hurricane Higgins was seemingly stimulated all round by unique test when narrowly landing a 21f handicap at Goodwood in August, and also ran well when third in similar event there last time. This looks much tougher, however.

Masked Marvel made great strides in 2011, winning 3 times, including St Leger. Largely disappointing in 2012, however, running poorly dropped to Group 3 level at Newbury last time. Blinkers now tried.

Saddler's Rock has developed into a high-class stayer, landing Doncaster Cup last autumn and the Goodwood Cup in August. Rare disappointing effort in the Lonsdale last time but still sets the standard here.

Times Up got back to best for in-form yard when winning the Lonsdale Cup at York in August by 2¼ lengths from High Jinx. 2f longer trip no concern with conditions on the quick side and a major contender.

Never Can Tell enjoyed an excellent 2011, rounding off with victory in Cesarewitch. Has made the frame only once this season, however, and biting off more than she can chew up in this grade.

Repeater had a busy campaign at 2, winning twice, and in the frame in handicaps all 3 starts this term at up to 13f. Will need to improve significantly for the longer trip in order to be involved.

Timeform 1-2-3:
1. Saddler's Rock
2. High Jinx
3. Times Up

Timeform Verdict: Last year's Leger winner Masked Marvel has plenty to prove at present and is passed over. Saddler's Rock may have disappointed at York, but that was surely a one-off looking at his overall record and he is taken to repeat last year's win. High Jinx and Times Up could give him most to do.

Black Friday Defendant Chad Elie Pleads Guilty

Poker News RSS / / 27 March 2012 / Leave a Comment

By pleading guilty, Elie avoids standing trial in April. His co-defendant, John Campos, has yet to enter a similar plea agreement.

By pleading guilty, Elie avoids standing trial in April. His co-defendant, John Campos, has yet to enter a similar plea agreement.

Elie follows the path taken by other payment processors targeted by the Black Friday indictment who have pleaded guilty to various charges and/or entered plea agreements, including Ira Rubin, Bradley Franzen, and Ryan Lang, as well as that of Absolute Poker co-founder Brent Buckley.

Just days after the news that former payment processor turned "supergrass" Daniel Tzvetkoff was to appear as a witness in the "Black Friday" trial of Chad Elie and John Campos, Elie avoided trial by entering a guilty plea to one of the conspiracy counts against him in a Manhattan courtroom on Monday. The plea agreement means Elie will face six months to a year in prison and the forfeiture of $500,000. His sentencing will come in early October.

The 32-year-old payment processor was one of 11 individuals named in the original Black Friday indictment unsealed on April 15, 2011. Originally Elie had been charged with nine different counts including violating the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006, conspiracy to violate the UIGEA, conspiracy to engage in money laundering, operating an illegal gambling business, and conspiracy to commit bank and wire fraud.

Ultimately Elie pleaded guilty to a single count of conspiracy to commit bank fraud, with the terms of his plea agreement with the U.S. Attorney's Office ensuring the latter will ask for a sentence of no more than one year. Meanwhile, Elie is free on a $250,000 bond as he awaits his October 3rd sentencing.

As reported by several outlets, Elie stated in court on Monday "I knew that my conduct was wrong" as he entered his guilty plea, explaining that he opened bank accounts in order to make transactions with online poker sites while being unclear with the banks regarding the actual purposes for the accounts.

No word as yet whether Elie's co-defendant, John Campos, formerly part-owner and Vice Chairman of the Board at the now-closed SunFirst Bank in St. George, Utah that handled allegedly unlawful online gambling transactions, will enter a similar agreement and avoid trial. As was the case with Elie, Campos has been charged with multiple counts, and if found guilty of them all could face up to 35 years in prison.

The trial is scheduled to begin April 9th, with Daniel Tzvetkoff set to appear as a key prosecution witness in the case. It was reported last week that Tzvetkoff -- who had dealings with all three of the targeted online poker sites (PokerStars, Full Tilt Poker, and Absolute Poker/UltimateBet) had turned over more than 90,000 documents to prosecutors.

Most believe Tzvetkoff's cooperation with prosecutors -- turning "supergrass" or informant -- is part of his own effort to negotiate a lessening of punishment after being charged himself with violating the UIGEA, bank fraud, and money laundering charges.

Timeform Daily: Friday, Leicester 15:40

Race of the Day RSS / / 09 March 2012 / Leave a Comment

Friday's race of the Day is at Leicester

Friday's race of the Day is at Leicester

"Rathcor's solid runner-up effort is the best recent hunter form on offer..."

Timeform provide a runner-by-runner guide for the hunter chase on the Leicester card...

Gidam Gidam is a thorough stayer who won 4m Doncaster handicap chase in February 2010 for John Mackie. Placed both starts in points last year, and confirmed he retains some ability when runner-up on hunter debut.

Marblehead achieved fairly useful form over fences for both Fergal O'Brien and Nigel Twiston-Davies. Since won a point for his new handler in January, and he ought to be competitive in this company.

Special Portrait surpassed previous winning hunter form when a clear second behind the far superior Cloudly Lane at Ayr last month. Will need to raise his game again in a race with more depth.

Rumbury Grey is a three-time point winner who was fit from that sphere when overhauling Galway Jack in 2½m hunter here last month. Easy enough to see those placings reversed under these circumstances, though.

Galway Jack was prolific in points, and not seen to best effect both hunter starts this year, ridden too forcefully at Towcester and unable to quicken over 2½m here. Will do better, especially at this trip.

Pistolet Noir's Career stalled after winning Grade 2 juvenile at Cheltenham in 2009 and evidence of both chase starts last year and his recent point run suggests he's very much a declining force.

Rathcor produced a career best when bagging a 2½m handicap hurdle at Huntingdon in October 2010. Not the biggest, but won a point prior to an excellent runner-up effort on last month's hunter debut.

Kiama produced a better effort on his second hunter start when third at Taunton last month, but in the process underlined her limitations in this sphere, and this is too tough.

Timeform 1-2-3:
1. Rathcor
2. Galway Jack
3. Rumbury Grey

Timeform Verdict: Rathcor's solid runner-up effort is the best recent hunter form on offer, so he gets the nod, though an improved showing from Galway Jack would come as no surprise.

Timeform Dubai SmartPlays: Friday March 9

James Doyle: Rides Moannaa

James Doyle: Rides Moannaa

"The remainder all look fully exposed and have their limitations so it really does look a good opportunity for Moannaa to add to that initial success."

Having successfully tipped Wealthy at a Betfair SP of [7.6] at Meydan on Saturday, Timeform's Dubai Handicapper Stephen Molyneux brings you three for Friday's card at Jebel Ali...

There are two big sprints at Meydan on Saturday, races that Alo Pura could easily have figured in but Dhruba Selvaratnam has opted to run her in the calmer waters of the listed event at 11:35 and hopefully that move will pay dividends. She has had another profitable campaign, winning at the track in December before catching the eye on her next two starts at Meydan, not getting much luck on either occasion. She still managed to finish third behind Hitchens last time and a reproduction of that form should be good enough, particularly as this should be run to suit; Kilt Rock, Russian Rock, Spin Cycle, Silaah and Star Crowned all potential front-runners who can help set it up for her.

The handicap at 12:10 looks a competitive affair but it will be easier than the races Step In Line has been contesting and he is fancied to take advantage of a drop in the weights after a couple of below-par efforts. He started the season well, finishing second off a mark of 95 behind Mureb before holding his own in a minor event won by Atlantic Brave. He hasn't really featured behind Treble Jig and He'sminenotyours on his last two outings but then again he was hardly entitled too and his mark of 93 should ensure he is far more of a threat than has been the case recently.

There isn't much strength to the 12:45 and it can go to Moannaa, who still has plenty more scope for improvement and should make a bold bid to make his handicap debut a winning one. He only made it to the track once when in the care of Roger Varian, finishing fourth behind Songburst at Kempton, and probably only needed to run to a similar level when comfortably beating Moonlight Dash at the course last time. Moonlight Dash has won since and reopposes on the same terms, and whilst that one also has some potential, it's still hard to see him reversing form. The remainder all look fully exposed and have their limitations so it really does look a good opportunity for Moannaa to add to that initial success.

Fresh from a busy morning at Ditcheat, Paul Nicholls provides an update on Kauto Star's progress...

Very little to report on the Kauto front today, but I said I would give a daily update, so here goes.

Kauto Star enjoyed his usual morning preparation before having two canters up the hill with Big Buck's and he continues to please us and head in the right direction.

So we look forward to his racecourse gallop at Wincanton tomorrow. I will give you an update in my column immediately after the work.

We have had a very busy morning here today, schooling on the grass.

Zarkandar went with Pearl Swan, and both looked particularly sharp. Brampour schooled with Prospect Wells, and Ulck Du Lin worked with Sonofvic.
