Timeform's Global Outlook: October 20/21

"You’d be forgiven for not knowing that there is a whole book of championship-level races staged at Ascot on Saturday as part of the second British Champions Day, the limelight so far hogged by the masterful Frankel."

The eyes of the racing world will be on Berkshire this weekend, to crown champions and to wish a fond farewell...

You'd be forgiven for not knowing that there is a whole book of championship-level races staged at Ascot on Saturday as part of the second British Champions Day, the limelight so far hogged (not for the first time) by the masterful Frankel. There is, of course, good reason for him commanding so many column inches ahead of what's likely to be his final race in the Champion Stakes: he is of course Timeform's highest-rated Flat performer of all, and this week Tony McFadden has put together five of Frankel's most memorable performances, while our Chief Correspondent (and cheerleader-in-chief) Jamie Lynch has offered his own eulogy on Frankel ahead of his clash with French champion Cirrus des Aigles at Ascot.

As we've already said, there are four other top-quality races lined up at Ascot on Champions Day: the Long Distance Cup, the Sprint Stakes, the Fillies' & Mares'Stakes and the QEII (milers' championship). Matt Garder has, rather ambitiously, tried to go through the card, rounding off with perhaps the most difficult race of all, a 29-runner apprentice handicap. All the best with that, Matthew.

Most other racing jurisdictions are happy to let the Brits have our day in the sun on Saturday, the overall Global outlook duly quite quiet. Perhaps predictably, the exception is the Australians, with the Caulfield Cup, a major trial for the Melbourne Cup, taking place on Saturday. Gary Crispe has previewed the feature race, while Dominic Beirne has had a look at the wider card, which contains five other Group races and a couple of listed events. Timeform are providing a FREE card at Caulfield tomorrow, complete with ratings and comments, as well as a runner-by-runner guide to the big one.

Just because the racing elsewhere is quiet doesn't mean it's uninteresting, as is proved in the US and Italy. There is Graded Stateside action at Keeneland, Belmont and Charles Town, with Chris Williams looking at all the relevant contests. Chris has also previewed the Gran Premio del Jockey Club, a Group 1 over 12 furlongs at San Siro on Sunday, which contains plenty of interest from Germany as well as recent Godolphin Stakes winner Retrieve.

You can listen to Timeform Radio's Global Podcast here, to get even more of a lowdown on this weekend's worldwide racing.

Three more SmartPlays from the Timeform Free Form site.

Newbury stages the first of their eight-race card at 1:30 and Forest Row can get the day off to a winning start by taking the first division of the six and a half furlong maiden. The son of Cockney Rebel is a half-brother to globe-trotting Group 1 winner Presvis and he made a highly encouraging start to his own career when fifth at the same track in May. Well backed, Forest Row overcame a slow start to stay on with purpose in the closing stages, finishing best of all in a race that race has thrown up a whole host of winners, the best of which third-placedTrumpet Major, who subsequently won the Champagne Stakes at Doncaster. The slight step up in trip is sure to suit Clive Cox's charge and he can make light of his five-month absence and take this on the way to better things.

Voodoo Prince was always going to be burdened with the weight of expectation, being the first foal of high-class performer Ouija Board, but he has shaped with promise in four starts to date and is fancied to get back to winning ways in the 16:55 at Doncaster. A winner of a maiden at Haydock on just his second outing, Voodoo Prince ran creditably in a handicap back at the Merseyside venue last time, finishing third to Watercourse. Gelded and given a break since that run in June, Voodoo Prince is one of the least exposed members of the field and open to improvement.

The final selection of the day isn't due to race until 19:20 at Wolverhampton, but he'll be worth waiting for. Trained by John Gosden, Ryton Runner is a well-related son of the great Sadler's Wells who showed significant improvement stepped up to a mile and a half at Kempton last time, finishing third and shaping as if an even stiffer test of stamina would suit. A full brother to two-mile winner Albanov, he looks set to go close off what could prove a lenient BHA rating in time.

Wolverhampton Placepot: Friday October 21

Daily Placepots RSS / Joe Szekeres / 21 October 2011 / Leave a Comment

Wolverhampton is the meeting of choice for Friday's placepot.

Wolverhampton is the meeting of choice for Friday's placepot.

"Ryton Runner has to be respected on the basis that he is stepping up in trip and looks open to progression having had just five starts so far."

With juvenile maidens galore at Doncaster and Newbury, and no sign of a banker at Fakenham, Joe Szekeres heads to Wolverhampton in search of easier placepot pickings...

17:45 - Till Dawn is our main hope in the opener given the solid form she has demonstrated throughout the season. Whilst she was a little bit disappointing when sixth at Kempton last time, she was hampered and deserves another chance. Should she fail to pass muster, Ivestar should be able to run to place, having finished second and third on his last two starts at the course, brining a level of consistency that the others cannot offer.

18:20 - Rio Grande is banker material in the second race of the evening, having shown promise on his three racecourse starts so far. Leaving the impression there's more to come despite shaping as if in need of the run after three months off last time, he looks certain to go well with Paul Hanagan taking the ride.

18:50 - Galloping Minster and Cheers are the least exposed of those that go to post for the third race of the evening, with the latter, who caught the eye when finishing second on his handicap debut over course and distance last time and looks open to improvement, making slightly more appeal of the two. That was also her first run on polytrack and she should go close if able to build upon that as expected. Galloping Minster should still be included as insurance, however.

19:20 - Ryton Runner has to be respected on the basis that he is stepping up in trip and looks open to progression having had just five starts so far. He finished third last time at Kempton on his all-weather debut and, given that he is fresher than most at this time of year, he should be able to produce another solid run. Another to consider is In A Nutshell, an interesting runner sent over from Ireland by Charles Byrnes, who cannot be ruled out under Kieren Fallon.

19:50 - Beach Babe is a reluctant banker in the next in order to save lines for the final maiden on the card, but she has run at least respectably on each of her Wolverhampton starts and, therefore, can be trusted to get us through what looks an ordinary handicap. She runs off the same mark as when going close in a similar event just six days ago and, with the three-year-old weight allowance in her favour, she will hopefully be good enough to place.

20:20 - We're going to have to take three in this maiden to ensure we land the prize. The three to side with are With Hindsight (probably above the level of ability required to win an average running of this sort of race), Double Trouble (showed promise last time out when second in a similar event) and Avison (falls into the 'could be anything' category, having had just the one career start so far).

Selections:

17:45 - 3, 11
18:20 - 3
18:50 - 6, 10
19:20 - 11, 12
19:50 - 7
20:20 - 5, 7, 9

There's no escaping Brighton, appearing until the bitter end of the Flat season, and the venue for today's placepot perm......

Anyone who can land the placepot on 'two-year-olds day' at Newmarket deserves every penny of what is likely to be a massive dividend, but Adam Brookes is opting for (slightly) easier pickings at Fontwell....

Bath Placepot: Sunday October 16

Daily Placepots RSS / David Johnson / 16 October 2011 / Leave a Comment

Bath is the venue for today's Placepot.

Bath is the venue for today's Placepot.

"Native Colony is preferred from the pair that head the betting with Birdwatcher having had consistency issues."

The calm after the storm. After a fantastic day at Ascot where Frankel edged closer to proving himself to be the greatest of all time and this column landed a winning 'pot, we're off to the more humble surroundings of Bath for today's bet.

1:30 - Glyn Ceiriog is still a maiden and many not be entirely straightforward, but that hasn't stopped her proving a very solid place proposition as she's hit the frame on three of her last four starts. It's hard to see her not on the premises once more despite swapping cheekpieces for a visor.

2:00 - An open sprint and no shortage of pace and that will suit course winners Bateleur, who's been knocking on the door of late, and Welcome Approach, who didn't get the run of things on polytrack last time.

2:30 - Larwood's staying-on fifth to Indian Tinker in a Sandown maiden looks by far the most solid piece of form, and with him shaping better than the result from a poor position at Haydock last time it will be a surprise if he doesn't bounce back to his best under these conditions.

3:05 - Native Colony is preferred from the pair that head the betting with Birdwatcher having had consistency issues and he isn't bred for this sort of test. Dark And Dangerous is worth including too as a course winner who shaped as if a step up to this trip will suit him well at Folkestone last time.

3:35 - Exceedance sets the standard and has the Timeform 'P' indicating the potential for significant improvement, but he's not been seen since May and has a first-time tongue strap applied so it may pay to take him on. Yeeoow and Sheer Vanity are the clear pick of others with experience and both are included.

4:10 - Hard to be confident with most of the field having a chance of some sort. Peachez has done really well since joining her current yard and her latest second at Windsor last time suggests she could still be on the upgrade. Zamina found a bit more for the step up to this sort of trip at Wolverhampton last time and should be thereabouts once again.

Selections:

13:30 - 6
14:00 - 3,4
14:30 - 3
15:05 - 1,8
15:35 - 3,8

Wales vs France in the Rugby World Cup. Liverpool vs Man Utd. British Champions Day. The X Factor. It doesn't get much better than that on a Saturday, but it will if we can land the placepot at Ascot......

In little more than 24 hours time a true great will once again take centre stage, the excitement is intangible and Timeform's Frankel correspondent, Jamie Lynch, is barely able to control himself. But enough about Johnny's latest X Factor performance, here is the placepot from Haydock....

Today's placepot comes from Uttoxeter.........

James Doyle (right) rides Ninfea at Bath today.

James Doyle (right) rides Ninfea at Bath today.

"With ground conditions at Bath drying out, Ninfea is fancied to return to winning ways in the ten-furlong fillies’ handicap."

Well, how do you follow the world's best racehorse confirming himself one of the greatest performers of all time on the inaugural Champions Day at one of the best racetracks on the globe?...Hopefully by backing a winner at Kempton and a couple more at Bath.

Unlike chief rival Australia Day, Street Dance looked a natural over fences when making his debut in that sphere at Fontwell earlier in the month, appearing firmly in control until his stamina gave out two fences from home and eventually finishing one-and-a-quarter lengths second to the more experience Vertige Dore. Whilst there are worries over Street Dance's tendency to race freely (which won't be a help to fellow front-runner Australia Day), the drop back in trip could negate that and he makes plenty of appeal under Richard Johnson with improvement highly likely.

The fine-furlong juvenile maiden at Bath may look like pretty standard fare at first glance but it features a horse in Exceedance whose Timeform rating has been garnished with 'P', indicating potential for significant improvement. Exceedance has had just one start so far, the form of which just modest, but it was the manner in which he achieved that four lengths second to Fulbright in a maiden at Musselburgh that was impressive, shaping like the best horse in the race before the winner's greater experience came into play. Whilst the fact Exceedance hasn't been seen since that initial outing five months ago is a slight worry, he need only repeat that level to win today and there's every likelihood that there's a lot more to come.

With ground conditions at Bath drying out, Ninfea is fancied to return to winning ways in the ten-furlong fillies' handicap. Despite taking a while to get going this season, Ninfea was almost as good as ever at Brighton last time despite looking ill at ease on the track, eventually finishing a head second of 13 to course specialist Penang Cinta. Down another 2 lb for that defeat (current BHA rating of 58, began year off 71), Ninfea looks very well treated and can provide the in-form Sylvester Kirk yard with another winner.

Nicky Henderson has a good chance of a third Cesarewitch with Veiled

"Jumps trainers have done well down the years and Nicky Henderson especially, winning it twice recently, so his Ascot Stakes winner Veiled has to be on the list."

It's Future Champions Day at Newmarket, but the present is all that matters in terms of getting through the placepot and here are the selections that can, hopefully, do just that...

14:05 - There's no heroics in the opener, the Challenge Stakes, as while it's tempting to take one of Strong Suit (won the Jersey and the Lennox, good third in the Jean Prat in between) and Chachamaidee (never finished out of the first three this season), who stand out from the rest, it's safer to include them both and, hopefully, we'll double up.

14:35 - Bapak Chinta tops the Timeform ratings in the Middle Park, but he's no placepot horse given things clearly haven't gone to plan, unseen since his Norfolk win at Royal Ascot. He will play a big part in the race, though, likely to set a scorching pace, which could set things up nicely for Lilbourne Lad, who's only a few stalls away, has a solid if unspectacular record and could easily get involved. It's also worth having the French raider Family One onside, however, as his Morny second looks good given the style of his Deauville conqueror Dabirsim's win on Arc day.

15:10 - Power sets the standard in the Dewhurst, but it's not an unsurpassable one and Bronterre, winner of both starts so far, has the potential to improve past the Ballydoyle colt. Roger Varian, fresh from a first Group 1 win, could easily have another, as his Ektihaam is one who's got much more still to offer, making him an obvious second choice against what could be a vulnerable market leader.

15:50 - Here's where it could easily get out of hand, the ultra-competitive Cesarewitch Handicap. Jumps trainers have done well down the years and Nicky Henderson especially, winning it twice recently, so his Ascot Stakes winner Veiled has to be on the list. Roger Charlton's Keys has a good profile, too, still unexposed, as is Sir Mark's Tuscan Gold, while of those with more miles on the clock Abergavenny looks interesting towards the bottom of the weights, crying out for a test and getting one today.

16:25 - Its' a case of form vs. potential in the Rockfel, with Sunday Times and Pimpernel clear of some less-exposed rivals in ratings terms, so the best approach may be to take one from either camp. Aidan O'Brien's Wading has won one of her two starts and likely has much more to offer, while Jeremy Noseda's Regal Realm, who won the Prestige at Goodwood in August, is much better than she could show in the May Hill last time and is worth another chance.

17:00 - You've probably guessed it by now, but with so many lines used up already it's the inevitable last-leg banker, but luckily Aidan O'Brien has done us a favour by running his Astrology, who has arguably the best form in the book already but who himself has yet to show everything he's got, third in the Futurity at the Curragh last time when seeming to find the race coming too soon after his debut win.

Newmarket: The venue for Saturday's best bet

Newmarket: The venue for Saturday's best bet

"Richard Hannon's Bronterre has raced just twice so far, and turned a listed race into a procession last time when scoring by five lengths."

Three more SmartPlays from the Timeform free form site...

Power sets the standard in the Dewhurst at Newmarket (15:10), but the form he has shown in five starts so far is not up to winning an average renewal of the race and he is open to less progress than his chief market rival, Bronterre. Richard Hannon's Bronterre has raced just twice so far, and turned a listed race into a procession last time when scoring by five lengths. Admittedly, he also has to find a better level of form to take a Group 1 of this stature, but he is yet to race against this kind of opposition and has bags of potential to improve beyond his rivals in today's seven furlong contest. The way Bronterre travelled last time suggested that a step up to the top level would be well within his compass and, with Richard Hughes on board this afternoon, Bronterre is the bet of the day.

An exciting card at Chepstow this afternoon gets the Jumps season fully underway and, despite lacking in numbers, there is no shortage of quality in the four-runner Novices' Chase due off at 16:10, with two of last season's better hurdlers, Silviniaco Conti and Cue Card, trying their hand at chasing for the first time. Cue Card was the memorable winner of the Champion Bumper at the Cheltenham Festival in 2010 and, whilst Silviniaco Conti also possesses a fair amount of speed, he could be tapped for toe by his main rival. Colin Tizzard can be expected to have Cue Card near fully tuned for his seasonal debut and he should be capable of opening his chasing account at the first attemtp.

Astrology is head and shoulders above his rivals in the Autumn Stakes at Newmarket (17:00) and is arguably open to more progression, so looks an obvious choice. Astrology picked up an above-average looking maiden on debut, before putting in a creditable display last time when finishing third in the Futurity Stakes behind Dragon Pulse and Parish Hall. That looks to have been a particularly hot contest, with the winner since going on to place in the Group 1 National Stakes, whilst the runner up is entered in the Dewhurst earlier on the Newmarket card. A reproduction of his Futurity Stakes performance should be enough to see Astrology go very close but if we factor in expected improvement then he will surely be too good for these.

Fallon has four rides booked at Nottingham today.

Fallon has four rides booked at Nottingham today.

"...back at a more suitable distance today, she (Hunter Forward) should prove highly competitive even off her revised mark."

Kieren Fallon has reduced the gap to just seven behind leader Paul Hanagan in the race to become champion jockey, but with two strong chances at Nottingham, he could be even closer after close of play today...

Tom Dascombe may be going through a bit of a dry spell by his standards but his I'm A Doughnut (14:00) can provide him with a welcome winner in division one of the six-furlong nursery at Nottingham. The half-brother to three winners showed improved form in maidens when a staying-on fourth to The Rising at Beverley last time and could be potentially well handicapped off an opening mark of 59 today. The way I'm A Doughnut has shaped so far suggests he's far from the finished article and, with improvement likely and the title-chasing Kieren Fallon an eye-catching booking, it'll be a disappointment if he isn't right in the mix.

Fallon also takes the mount on Australian import Hunter Forward (16:30), who showed herself to be a well-treated filly when winning her first two starts for Luca Cumani, namely handicaps at Sandown (9f) in July and Haydock (10.4f) in August. Hunter Forward's latest outing, when a short-priced third to Red Fama at Newcastle, suggested her stamina was stretched by a mile and a half on soft ground and, back at a more suitable distance today, she should prove highly competitive even off her revised mark.

Another well-handicapped horse is Stuart Williams' Captain Macarry (17:30), who was so well-in when bouncing back to form with a victory at Newcastle last time that it's difficult to ignore his chance today even after a 6 lb rise to his official rating. When you consider that, of the six-year-old's six other handicap wins, five have come off higher marks than the 68 he competes off today, it's clear that he has the potential to rack up a sequence if holding his form. Whilst there's no denying that Captain Macarry has produced his best performances over seven furlongs and a mile, it's anticipated that the sheer number of pace horses in the race should allow his stamina to come into play and he's an appealing bet in an open event.
