Midweek League One Betting: Carlisle to struggle at table toppers Rovers

Blues boss Greg Abbott hailed Saturday's 2-0 win over Brentford as his 'best result since I have been at the club', and they worked extremely hard to keep the Bees quiet by closing them down. I am slightly wary of that result as it was their first win in seven games. Donny are solid at the moment, and are far more consistent.

Alan Dudman previews a full set of League One fixtures this Tuesday evening, with Doncaster and Yeovil the home bets to side with. Meanwhile Coventry's new boss Steven Pressley faces his first game at the Ricoh Arena.

Doncaster Rovers 1.875/6 v Carlisle United 4.707/2, the draw 3.7011/4

With the ever-changing position at the top of the table, one wonders how long Doncaster will stay at the summit? Saturday's 2-1 win at Bournemouth installed Rovers as the division leaders, but that position has been like a relay race this term and they are still available to back at 4.2016/5 in the League One winner market.

Donny have the best away record in the division but have lost only once at The Keepmoat in their last seven matches. During that run on home soil, they have conceded just five in their last six and look more efficient than stylish. They have some towering players and look for the diagonals.

Carlisle have ditched their passing style and diamond formation after the 3-0 defeat to Walsall two weeks ago, and have most certainly tightened up since that loss. All three of their most recent games have been under 2.5 goals, which is some turnaround for one of the worst defences in the division.

Blues boss Greg Abbott hailed Saturday's 2-0 win over Brentford as his 'best result since I have been at the club', and they worked extremely hard to keep the Bees quiet by closing them down. I am slightly wary of that victory as it was their first win in seven games. Donny are solid at the moment, and are far more consistent.

Recommended bet:
Back Doncaster to win @ 1.875/6

Yeovil Town 2.206/5 v Crawley Town 3.7011/4, the draw 3.505/2

Yeovil are four points from the league leaders Doncaster and yet are still available to back at odds-against at Huish Park this Tuesday. Not only are the Glovers keeping clean sheets (five from their last eight games), but they score too, and only Bournemouth and Swindon have netted more at home.

The Greens may have lost a bit of their cutting edge up front in their last couple of matches - drawing 0-0 on Saturday with Hartlepool, and last week's 1-0 win over Tranmere, but they are still one of the form teams in the division.

There are not many games in which Yeovil record a 'nil', and their pace and power has been the highlight of an exceptional run of form.

Crawley will pose a different sort of threat to Yeovil's recent opponents, as they like to pass the ball. However, they could be a mid-table team that could just fizzle out with nothing to play for. Six of their last eight matches have been under 2.5 goals, whilst two wins from nine games is hardly sparkling.

I would look to trade a low-scoring scoreline, whilst using the under 1.5 goals and 2.5 goals markets to get the stake for that bet. The safer play is to stick with a home win, as Yeovil should have enough quality to break down the visitors and according to Opta, have a league high 11 victories on their own patch.

Recommended bet:
Back Yeovil to win @ 2.206/5

Oldham Athletic 2.0621/20 v Hartlepool United 4.003/1, the draw 3.45n/a

This is the game that both dare not lose. With four points difference between the relegation strugglers, this might be an encounter in which the two teams will be very tentative and nervous, with neither wanting to over-commit.

On the plus side, Pools have been in fairly decent form of late and are keeping clean sheets. They are showing great desire and determination at the moment, and are definitely playing for their manager John Hughes. The north east outfit looked a little tired on Saturday, but a 0-0 scoreline against Yeovil represents a decent result.

Hartlepool don't score many on the road, whilst Oldham have failed to find the net in their last two outings. Giant striker (and FA Cup hero) Matt Smith won't feature having picked up an injury on Saturday. His aerial presence will be a huge blow.

The Boundary Park pitch is poor, and it might be a case of neither being able to break each other down. Pools went with a midfield 'three' against Yeovil, but Hughes might be a touch more defensive this Tuesday. Again using Hartlepool as a trade, I would play the 0-0 correct scoreline, with a poke at the unders looking the best bet. Opta stats would back this up if you are trading in the first 45 minutes, as the Latics have scored just 13 goals in the first-half of matches (a league low).

The draw In-Play would appeal most as an outright result pick.

Recommended bet:
Back under 2.5 goals @ 1.804/5

Coventry City 1.804/5 v Colchester United 5.204/1, the draw 3.8014/5

New Coventry City boss Steven Pressley faces his debut home game at the Ricoh in midweek, fresh from his first win as boss on Saturday with a 2-1 win at Scunthorpe. Leon Clarke scored again (his 21st of the season), and he should be fit for an important match to keep the Sky Blues' play-off hopes alive.

Colchester played quite well at the weekend, only to lose 2-1 at home to Crewe. Prior to that they had kept three successive clean sheets and were showing a bit of fight.

The angle into this game is Colchester's lack of away goals, only 14 in total and the league's most impotent attack. With suspensions and injuries up front, Us boss Joe Dunne isn't overly blessed in the attacking options. A dart at correct scorelines involving the visitors not scoring would be my idea of a couple of trades. But the strongest bet is sticking with the hosts, who according to Opta stats, are unbeaten in their last six meetings with the Essex side (winning five).

Recommended bet:
Back Coventry to win @ 1.804/5

Soulier Leads EPT Campione Final Table, Busquet 2nd

Fabrice Soulier looks to add to his $3.6 million-plus lifetime earnings with a win at EPT Campione (Photo: Neil Stoddart)

A sequence of knockouts early on Friday helped catapult Fabrice Soulier into the chip lead, but a late surge by Olivier Busquet helped position him close to Soulier with eight players remaining.

A relatively quick day at the European Poker Tour Campione Main Event on Friday saw the field of 24 swiftly whittled down to eight, with the Frenchman Fabrice Soulier ending the day in front to begin tomorrow's final table as leader. Soulier amassed a stack of 3.48 million by day's end, putting him ahead of a tough group including Olivier Busquet (2nd, 3.011 million) and Jannick Wrang (3rd, 2.882 million).

When play began on Friday, Jannick Wrang led the 24 who'd survived from the starting field of 570 players. Early action saw the short stacks quickly exiting, including Jose Manuel Nadal (24th), Andrea Benelli (20th), and Jean-Philippe Rohr (17th), all among the group earning €15,000 back from their €5,300 buy-in.

With 16 left they redrew for the final two tables, and soon Soulier began his climb up the counts by eliminating Alessandro Minasi in 16th (€20,000). Primoz Adamie followed Minasi to the rail in 15th, also earning €20,000, then Soulier knocked out both Giuseppe Biancouiso (14th) and Alexandre Andermatt (13th), both of whom earned €25,000 for their efforts.

By the time Ramin Hajiyev (12th) and Pasquale Vinci (11th) had been eliminated -- both taking away €30,000 -- Soulier had surged to the top of the counts to battle start-of-day leader Wrang and Balazs Botond for the lead.

However, Olivier Busquet would be the star of the final stretch, scoring the final two knockouts before play concluded.

First Busquet knocked out David Vamplew in 10th (€41,000) in a hand in which all of the latter's chips went in on the turn with the board showing 8s-5d-Qd-Ks. Vamplew had Kh-Jh for kings, but Busquet had Qh-8h for two pair, and after the Ah river Vamplew was out.

After that one, Busquet and Simeon Naydenov got into a preflop raising war that resulted in Naydenov all in with Jc-Jd against Busquet's Ah-Kc A king flopped, and Naydenov was unable to catch up, eliminated one spot shy of the final table in ninth (€41,000).

Here's how the final eight will stack up for Saturday's final day of play:

1. Fabrice Soulier -- 3,480,000
2. Olivier Busquet -- 3,011,000
3. Jannick Wrang -- 2,882,000
4. Balazs Botond -- 2,080,000
5. Koen De Visscher -- 1,856,000
6. Stefano Puccilli -- 1,450,000
7. Mario Nagel -- 1,210,000
8. Robin Ylitalo -- 1,153,000

First out tomorrow earns €54,000, while the winner will pick up a cool €640,000 plus the Shamballa Jewels winner's bracelet worth €10,000 more.

World Poker Tour Venice Grand Prix Final Table Set: Andrea Dato Leads

Poker News RSS / / 09 February 2012 / Leave a Comment

Andrea Dato (Photo: Francesco Rizzo / WPT)

Andrea Dato (Photo: Francesco Rizzo / WPT)

The finalists have now locked up at least €32,195 for their efforts over the past week but the eventual winner will walk away with €229,800 which includes a seat to the 2012 WPT World Championship worth $25,500.

On Monday a total of 155 poker players passed through the doors of the oldest running casino in the world, the Casino Di Venezia, and exchanged €4,950 for 30,000 tournament chips and the chance to join the likes of Phil Ivey, and Gus Hansen in becoming a World Poker Tour champion.

For 149 of them the dream has ended but for the six men who have reached the televised final table the dream is certainly still alive and in around 24 hours time one of them will indeed be crowed WPT Venice Grand Prix champion. The man who they all have to catch when the tournament resumes at 1400 CET on Friday is Andrea Dato who ended the penultimate day with 1,591,000 chips, the only player to pass the one million chip barrier..

The name Dato may ring a bell with some of you and it should because in December 2011 he was mentioned on these very pages after he finished fourth in the WPT Venice Main Event. That particular tournament carried a lower buy-in of €3,000 and was hosted on the mainland not the historical floating city. Now the Italian is looking to go all the way and follow in the footsteps of Edouard Alescio (winner of December's WPT Venice) and keep the trophy in Italy.

Five men stand between Dato and him winning the title not least of all Simon Ravnsbaek who will start the day as Dato's nearest rival with 922,000 chips. Ravnsbaek has played controlled, aggressive poker throughout this Main Event and it is nailed on that he will either win this event or have a major say in who does. He has shown he is not afraid to get involved in pots, especially against Dato who he has position on and Friday's encounter should be very interesting indeed.

Making up the final six are Rinat Bogdanov (907,000 chips), Alessandro Longobardi (558,000), Andrea Carini (347,000) and Gianluca Trebbi (343,000). The blinds will start at 10,000/20,000/2,000a and the average stack is 775,000 so some of the shorter stacks have a little work to do if they are to mount a serious challenge at this final table.

Along with the prestige if winning such an event there is also the not so small matter of prize money. The finalists have now locked up at least €32,195 for their efforts over the past week but the eventual winner will walk away with €229,800 which includes a seat to the 2012 WPT World Championship worth $25,500.

Stein Smashes Stellar Final Table to Win Bracelet

Sam Stein's first recorded live tournament cash was for just $4,267 when he came 14th from 255 entrants in a $1,500 buy-in event at the 2009 LA Poker Classic. Little did the poker community know that this relatively small win would spark a string of results that even the very best in the game would be envious of.

You would be forgiven for having never heard of Stein but I assure you that you will be hearing much more about the talented 23-year old professional poker player. Just days after his first major live cash, Stein came second in a $1,000 tournament for $44,232 and a few months later he made the final table of the WPT Bellagio Cup V for an even larger score of $61,980. The following month he made another WPT final table, this won at the Legends of Poker, which saw him walk away with a $116,225 addition to his bankroll.

The rest of the year was cashless for Stein but he more than made up with it during 2010 with an amazing run of results. He started off the year by coming second in a $5,000 event at the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure for a then career best score of $168,390 and then the month afterwards finished as runner-up to Tom Marchese in the NAPT Deep Stack Extravaganza for an even larger cash of $522,306. He spent the rest of 2010 cashing a further 10 times, eight of those being for at least five figures, and he ended with winnings for the year totalling more than $900,000.

However, the best was yet to come as Stein once again started the year in stunning form and again at the PCA. This time he finished fourth in the Main Event for a wallet-bursting $1,000,000 prize and just last week he came third in the $10,000 Pot-Limit Hold'em Championship for $264,651. Now he has gone one better and won his first major title and a World Series of Poker bracelet by taking down the hotly contested $3,000 Pot-Limit Omaha tournament.

A total of 685 players entered this year's event and these were whittled down to just 25 by the time the third day of play began, lead by Stein. It took four hours for these 25 to be reduced to the final table of nine, with Tex Barch being the final table bubble boy when his Ad-As-Td-7s lost to Christian Harder's Ac-Ah-8h-7h when the board ran out 2d-7c-Kc-3h-8s. And what a final table it was with the likes of double WSOP bracelet winner Brock Parker, Adam Junglen, Harder and high stakes cash game pro Ben Lamb all vying for the $420,802 first place prize and of course an elusive bracelet.

First to be sent to the rail was Diluan Kovachecv ($31,360) and he was followed onto the sidelines by Austin Scott ($40,748) in eighth place. Parker's dreams of becoming a triple bracelet winner ended when he was eliminated in seventh whilst Zimnan Ziyard finally lost his stack to finish in sixth spot, worth $71,548. Junglen was next to go, the youngster finishing in fifth place for the second time in a matter of days, mirroring his result in the $5,000 No Limit Hold'em Shootout and when Warren Fund busted out in third there were only Stein and PLO expert Lamb to fight it out for the bracelet.

Stein held a substantial 4,245,000 to 1,920,000 chip lead over Lamb though it took him a couple of dozen hands to finally lead him to slaughter. In the final hand Stein opened with a raise to 120,000 and Lamb called, so both players saw the dealer put out the 3d-Kh-Jc flop. Lamb lead out with a 150,000 bet and Stein quickly called. The turn was the Tc and again Lamb bet out, this time for 255,000, sending Stein into the tank for over two minutes. When he eventually emerged he did so with a pot-size raise, which seemed to completely flummox Lamb who took a few moments before putting the rest of his 900,000 stack across the betting line and Stein called. Lamb turned over Qc-Js-9d-4h for the second nut-straight but Stein held Ac-Qh-Jh-6h for the nuts. The river had to be an ace and only an ace to split the pot and keep Lamb alive but it was the 2d and he was eliminated in second place, leaving Stein to pick up his first piece of poker jewellery and take his lifetime winnings past the $2,800,000 mark.

Final table payouts

1st: Sam Stein: $420,802
2nd: Ben Lamb: $259,918
3rd: Warren Fund: $184,368
4th: Christian Harder: $132,623

7th: Brock Parker: $53,633

EPT San Remo Reaches Final Table

Poker News RSS / Matthew Pitt / 03 May 2011 / Leave a Comment

The man they all have to catch

The man they all have to catch

The San Remo leg of the ever-popular European Poker Tour has reached the final table and it promises to be an extremely entertaining affair, with the perfect blend of experienced professional poker players and rank amateurs alike.

Yesterday 24 players returned to the Casino San Remo safe in the knowledge that they all had at least €25,000 locked up but six hours later these 24 had been reduced to the final table of eight and each of the players who had survived with their chip stacks intact had seen their guaranteed payout massively increase to €81,950.

At the start of the day the eyes of the media were on Joe Cada, the 2009 World Series of Poker Main Event champion, who had finished Day 5 fifth in chips and in with a very realistic chance of adding an EPT gong to his WSOP win but he fell short of making it to the final table, busting out in 13th place at the hands of Max Heinzelmann. Cada was followed to the rail by British pro Andrew Teng, who was also eliminated at the hands of the aggressive Heinzelmann.

Local player Marco Bognanni exited in 11th place and when the last-woman standing, Xuan Liu took care of Antonio Venneri shortly afterwards the last nine players all joined up on the unofficial final table. Whilst the camera crews set up their equipment and the tournament staff moved the stacks of chips to the new table the players were sent on an impromptu 15-minute break but they will have wished they had not have bothered as when they returned they only played one more hand!

With blinds at 30,000/60,000/5,000a Costantino Russo opened from under the gun to 125,000 and when the action folded around to Luigi Pignataro in the big blind he decided the best course of action was to move all in for 850,000. Russ snap-called and turned over a pair of black aces, which were crushing the red eights of Pignataro. The final board ran out Kd-Jh-4c-4s-Kc and with that the tournament was paused for the last time before a champion will be crowned later today.

Leading the way is Rupert Elder, a member of the Blonde Poker forum and a popular figure in online poker circles. His 8,005,000 stack is just in front of Heinzelmann who has now made back-to-back EPT final tables after finishing as runner-up at ET Berlin just a few weeks ago. Someone to watch out for is Liu, the first female final tablist of Season 7 of the EPT. The last woman to reach a final table in an EPT Main Event was Liv Boeree who won this very tournament 12 months ago. Could Liu follow in her footsteps? Check back soon for all the action from the EPT San Remo final table.
