Timeform UK SmartPlays: Saturday November 1

"Ardkilly Witness should benefit from a recent spin over hurdles at Cheltenham and is taken to strike for his in-form yard."

Ascot and Wetherby provide high-class jumps action on Saturday. Timeform pick out the best bets from across the cards.

Sign of A Victory - 15:00 Ascot

Sign of A Victory looked an unlucky loser when persistently hampered by a loose horse on the run-in at Ayr in April and remains with some potential. He can make a winning reappearance. Mountain King will make a chaser in time, but he's got more to offer in this sphere before then and may pose the biggest threat to the selection, with Ted Spread also coming into the reckoning.

Taquin de Seuil - 15:15 Wetherby

Silviniaco Conti was successful in two of four starts in Grade 1 company last term, notably the King George, and has the best form in the book, but connections may have one eye on races such as the Betfair Chase in three weeks time, and he may be worth opposing on this occasion with Cheltenham Festival scorer Taquin du Seuil, who has had the benefit of a recent pipe-opener. Medermit looks next best.

Ardkilly Witness - 15:35 Ascot

Ardkilly Witness should benefit from a recent spin over hurdles at Cheltenham and is taken to strike for his in-form yard. Le Bec starts life in handicaps from a fair-looking mark and can compete if putting in a fault-free round of jumping, while Merry King was placed in this event 12 months ago and won't be far away again if ready to go after an absence.

Cheltenham Placepot: Sunday November 18

"Nicky Henderson really is no fun at all, isn’t he? Darlan is out of the RP Hurdle, but to be honest he would have been merely an opposable favourite as far as this perm’s concerned..."

After an agonising five out of six yesterday, Keith Melrose is back for more on the last day of the Open meeting.

13:10 - Were it not for the shadow of his stablemate Simonsig hanging over the race, I think Captain Conan would be my early pick for the Arkle. He's a strong-travelling type who is also a brute of a horse, just the type to make a top two-mile chaser, and he's just the sort of horse to provide an early banker for our Placepot, for all his complete lack of experience over fences.

13:45 - It's been a Nicholls and Pipe jamboree so far this week, and we'll take that theme into the second leg. For the champion trainer, we have Ruben Cotter, who could be bound for a high level judging by his ready success in a warm race at Exeter back in May. Pipe is represented in our perm by Close House, who despite having just three runs over hurdles to his name has already shown what he can do in top company, fourth to Simonsig in March's Neptune, and is likely to be suited by whatever conditions prevail today.

14:20 - Anti-climactic doesn't begin to describe the Shloer Chase, robbed of its significance by Sprinter Sacre's withdrawal. Favourite by default is now Wishfull Thinking, but having held such high hopes for him last season it's a case of 'once bitten, twice shy' for me, so I recommend taking him on with Doeslessthanme, who was consistent as well as progressive for Paul Nicholls in 2011/12 and is all-but certain to be fit given the fettle his yard have been in this autumn.

14:50 - Nicky Henderson really is no fun at all, isn't he? Darlan is out of the RP Hurdle, but to be honest he would have been merely an opposable favourite as far as this perm's concerned, there being plenty of attractive alternatives. Chief among them is Kazlian, who only lost the Fred Winter because Tom Scudamore was apparently 'on tilt' following Grands Crus' flat run in the RSA the same day. Here's hoping a good night's sleep has put Tom in a better mood after Grands Crus' latest disappointment. Prospect Wells is a good option for our Placepot, too, as he's been consistent as a hurdler and could do even better faced with his stiffest test of stamina yet over timber.

15:25 -  In an attempt to save lines, we won't get too bogged down in this competitive Grade 2 novice hurdle and simply select who we see as the best prospect. That honour goes to Fox Run, a mightily impressive winner at Worcester on his debut for Paul Nicholls who we see as likely to be running in the best novice hurdles this season.

16:00 - A bumper is almost never welcome as the last leg of a Placepot, and this one more than most as both Pipe and Nicholls have interested recruits in the form of The Liquidator and Fascino Rustico respectively. Nevertheless, we can take such tricky propositions out of the equation by banking on Monkey Kingdom, who has experience around here and is seemingly well regarded by a yard which has a reputation for doing well with bumper horses.

Selections:

13:10 - 2
13:45 - 5, 6
14:20 - 2
14:50 - 3, 12

Wolverhampton is the scene of Monday's best bet

Wolverhampton is the scene of Monday's best bet

"The step back up to a mile today is in her favour and, with a number of her rivals making little appeal, this looks a good opportunity for Anginola to regain the winning thread..."

National hunt action has centre stage at present, but a horse on the Flat at Wolverhampton rates as Monday's bet of the day...

The ground at Ffos Las today is likely to be testing, with the official going being described as soft, heavy in places. That should play into the hands of the Nick Mitchell-trained Misstree Dancer (14:20), as two of her three career wins have come on heavy ground. The seven-year-old made a smooth transition to fences last season with a win at Newbury in December among a number of creditable efforts, and she should be all the better for last month's reappearance over a trip short of her best at Wetherby. Now back off a mark just one pound higher than for that Newbury success, and with the step back up to three miles in her favour on ground that will suit, Misstree Dancer looks an attractive proposition this afternoon.

Azione (14:55) made a winning debut for the Jeremy Scott yard at Exeter eight days ago, and with the stable continuing in fine form she is likely to prove hard to beat at Ffos Las in the two-mile handicap hurdle. As that win at Exeter came in a conditional jockeys' race, the daughter of Exit To Nowhere is able to escape a penalty, meaning she can race off the same mark today leaving her incredible well handicapped on the pick of her old form. Another for whom the soft ground will pose few problems, she can make it two wins from two starts for her new connections.

Our final SmartPlay, and bet of the day, comes from Wolverhampton in the shape of Anginola (16.50). The Joseph Tuite-trained runner got off the mark at Kempton in September, and has run well in defeat on both starts since. Dropped back to seven furlongs for her latest outing, Anginola gave the impression she found the trip on the short side, taking a while to hit top gear before finishing well to take fourth. The step back up to a mile today is in her favour and, with a number of her rivals making little appeal, this looks a good opportunity for Anginola to regain the winning thread.

Folkestone Placepot: Monday November 28

Daily Placepots RSS / Simon Baker / 28 November 2011 / Leave a Comment

Folkestone is the scene of Monday's placepot.

Folkestone is the scene of Monday's placepot.

"...the one that really stands out is Hunt Ball, who looked a lot better than a 69-rated horse for a long way on his first start for the Rodford/Burke team at Cheltenham in April..."

Today's placepot comes from Folkestone...

12:30 - The only interesting ones in this are the top two, Shipboard Romance and Marju King, the former because Jim Best might improve her, the latter because he's well in on his Flat form and shaped better than the result at Hereford last time.

13:00 - The only way My Faithful Annie can win this is if the other two fall, and while that will probably result in a monster placepot dividend, it's unlikely enough that you'll be safe taking Temple Lord and Lifestyle, both of whom are potentially useful chasers.

13:30 - Ohio Gold has spurned enough chances to think he's not a bombproof odds-on short in the maiden hurdle, but if he jumps around and doesn't go amiss he's a good thing to place and is an obvious banker.

14:00 - This is interesting so far as 0-95 handicaps go, with the first four in the market all catching the eye for one reason or another. That said, the one that really stands out is Hunt Ball, who looked a lot better than a 69-rated horse for a long way on his first start for the Rodford/Burke team at Cheltenham in April, jumping well out in front before his relative lack of ability told against fairly useful rivals. He's getting plenty of weight from all today's rivals and is probably worth risking as a banker given that he could be miles ahead of his mark.

14:35 - Storm Survivor always looked the sort that would be brought along with handicaps in mind and the chances are today is the day for him with McCoy taking over for the first time since his debut. He's the obvious one to be with in a race that probably won't take much winning.

15:10 - Gemini Jim is interesting upped markedly in trip and switched to fences for his handicap debut after three quickfire runs in novice hurdles, but there are better options to be found elsewhere for placepot purposes, namely Reblis and Reymysterio, both of whom are fairly handicapped on their best form.

Sedgefield Placepot: Tuesday November 22

Daily Placepots RSS / Joe Szekeres / 22 November 2011 / Leave a Comment

National Hunt racing takes the focus of Tuesday's Placepot with selections at Sedgefield

National Hunt racing takes the focus of Tuesday's Placepot with selections at Sedgefield

"The final race of the afternoon is a tricky looking handicap hurdle and probably the most difficult race to predict on the Sedgefield card..."

Joe Szekeres tackles the placepot at Sedgefield, where he tries to keep lines to a minimum...

13:00 - Bound For Glory looks the most solid option in the opener and he is some 5 lb clear of his nearest rival based on Timeform ratings. He impressed on his debut last month, sticking to his task well once headed in a similar contest over at Carlisle, and he should be able to build upon that display given that this is just his second run under rules, while he also has the useful Henry Brooke takeing 3 lb off. There is an outside chance that the favourite could underperform over a trip that may prove inadequate in time, so we will also take Ravens Secret .

13:30 - Trustan Times is a banker in the Beginners' Chase based on the ability he showed in two starts over hurdles last season. The pick of his form included a useful display when finishing second behind Moonlight Drive at Wetherby and he looks the sort to develop into a good chaser given his style and pedigree.

14:00 - Countrywide Flame has demonstrated form well in excess of the standard usually required to win a race of this nature and, if reproducing his best, then he has to go close.

14:30 - Authentic Act is the third banker in quick succession. He shaped as if in need of the run last time out after a three-month absence, but the form of his win over course and distance in June has worked out particularly well and he should give another good account of himself today.

15:00 - Riskier is Timeform top rated for the fifth leg, but there are doubts regarding his ability to fully see out the 3m 3f trip and, as a result, we're going to take him on with two selections. Finbin is a thorough stayer who should be suited by the test, having won over course and distance back in 2010, whilst Frontier Boy could be a staying chaser on the upgrade having improved on his two latest chasing starts.

15:30 - The final race of the afternoon is a tricky-looking handicap hurdle and probably the most difficult race to predict on the Sedgefield card. If we get this far, we're going to want three representing us in the last and the trio that get the nod are Tinseltown (has been lowered 3 lb in the weights despite finishing third on last two starts), Funky Munky (should improve for the drop down in trip), and Sydney Cove (could be a lot better than his current mark based on his juvenile form from 2009).

Selections
13:00 - 2, 8
13:30 - 7
14:00 - 1

Southwell is the venue for all three of Tuesday's SmartPlays.

Southwell is the venue for all three of Tuesday's SmartPlays.

"Mottley Crewe really is in excellent form at present..."

Here's hoping that a small amount of Nicky Henderson's good fortune from Monday can rub off on our three selections at Southwell today...

Mottley Crewe (13:10) really is in excellent form at present, making all when beating Bailadeira at Catterick at the end of October prior to a solid second to Crimson Cloud at this track. He beat the rest of the field comfortably that day, pulling clear with the winner, and a reproduction of that effort will make this course-and-distance winner difficult to beat here.

Take Cover (14:10) rewarded connections patience when belatedly making a winning racecourse debut, at this track over seven furlongs, when beating Enchanted Dream by a length and a half. He went on to record a comfortable success over course-and-distance a week ago, easily reeling in the front-runner and appearing to have plenty left at the finish. He does carry a 6 lb penalty for that success but that does not look anywhere near enough to stop him, as he is a potentially useful sort, and a bold bid to land the hat-trick is expected.

Waahej (15:10) is another one in terrific form at present, and can make amends for an unfortunate defeat at Kempton last time. He was left with far too much to do upon entering the straight, and did really well to get as close as he did in finishing third. He is 4 lb higher today, but you cannot beat a horse in form, and Waahej can defy that rise to gain a fifth career success.

Timeform SmartPlays

Back Mottley Crewe @ [5.7] in the 13:10 at Southwell
Back Take Cover @ [2.04] in the 14:10 at Southwell
Back Waahej @ [5.6] in the 15:10 at Southwell

Some very interesting novice chasers line up at Kempton today, namely the Nicky Henderson-trained pair Chablais and Mossley, but they are rightfully odds-on and, therefore, these three make more appeal at the current prices....

With no recommended lays across the two meetings in Britain today, this afternoon's three SmartPlays are all backs......

The highlight of the day is undoubtedly the return of Long Run, Kauto Star and friends in a dazzling renewal of the Betfair Chase at Haydock but, for those who feel that race is one to watch rather than bet on, these three SmartPlays may well provide financial reward elsewhere....

Timeform Daily: November Handicap, Doncaster 15:10

Race of the Day RSS / Timeform / 04 November 2011 / Leave a Comment

Doncaster stages the November Handicap on Saturday.

Doncaster stages the November Handicap on Saturday.

"A typically competitive renewal of this traditional end-of-season feature. Willing Foe catches the eye as a lightly-raced sort who shaped with promise on his belated return, but just as interesting is Pekan Star who's had little racing himself and threatens to be suited by the longer trip..."

Timeform take a look at the November Handicap, the traditional Flat season finale...

Montaff brought losing run to an end over 2m at Ripon in April. Runner-up in Henry II and Northumberland Plate since, but disappointing the last twice and this probably an inadequate test.

Harlestone Times gained a gritty win over 1½m at Goodwood in May, but less impact off higher marks since, fifth in the Mallard at Doncaster last time. Vulnerable at the weights once more.

Kiama Bay is a progressive sort who completed a hat-trick in handicaps over 1½m earlier in the year and has remained in form since, runner-up in listed race at Chester last time. Sure to give it another good go.

The Betchworth Kid is a hold-up sort who captured Nottingham listed race in April. Never dangerous in handicaps the last twice, however, and lot more needed if he's to repeat his second in this race last year.

Willing Foe made marked progress when winning first 3 starts last season at up to 1½m, and promising return when fourth at Newbury recently. Steps back up in trip here, and remains open to improvement.

Burj Nahar created a favourable impression when winning first 2 starts 20 months apart. Gone backwards since, though, failing to beat any home when tried in a tongue tie here last time.

Tepmokea is a free-going sort who made a winning return in 1½m event at York in May. Limited impact off higher mark since (had excuse last time), and handicapper probably still in control despite 2 lb drop.

Classic Vintage boasts some strong handicap form and twice a winner over 1½m this year, including in first-time blinkers at Ffos Las last time. This a much more competitive race, however.

Resurge is a hold-up performer who goes well at Epsom. Below par since latest victory there in a handicap in June, and trip an unknown on only second try beyond 1¼m.

Merchant of Dubai is a C&D winner who made fair start for present yard back in May after 12 months off. Not built on that over various trips since, and hard to recommend even with assessor relenting.

Pekan Star is a lightly-raced sort who created a good impression when successful on handicap bow at York (1¼m) in May. Not built on that yet, but fresher than most (gelded during break) and new trip could suit.

Demolition largely held his form for Richard Fahey and career best on first start back with Noel Wilson last month, landing Nottingham handicap (1¼m). Just as effective at this trip and not out of it.

Ile de Re was useful in France at up to 2m, and lot to like about the manner of his win at Ascot on debut for new yard. Found life tougher since, seventh in listed race back in France last time.

Zuider Zee has been knocking on the door this season, improving bit more when third in Old Borough Cup at Haydock penultimate start. Lesser effort last time but still a likely player back from a short break.

Itlaaq was well suited by the emphasis being on speed when scoring over 2m at York in July. Ran just as well when fourth over 1½m at Newmarket last time, but vulnerable off this mark.

Crackentorp gained second success of the year over 1½m at York (beat Kiama Bay) in August, battling well. Struggled off 5 lb higher mark in Old Borough Cup at Haydock, and this no easier.

Hanoverian Baron thrived for joining present yard, winning 4 times over 1¼m/1½m in less than a year. Shaped well on return back in May but absence since doesn't augur well, and wide draw far from ideal.

Oceanway improved since being upped to 9f/1¼m, winning 3 times since June, most recently at York in October. Lesser effort at Newbury since, and stamina for this trip not assured.

Enroller was a smart performer back in 2009. Missed all next season and not shown a great deal in 2 starts this year, though been given a chance by the handicapper. The more rain the better.

Scrapper Smith has taken on new lease of life since upped to 1¼m, winning twice prior to a good second to European Dream at Ayr last week. Ground remains in his favour but has stamina to prove up further in trip.

Status Symbol has been back on the up of late, winning at Newmarket (1½m) prior to third at Haydock last time. Well drawn for a front runner and likely to give his all once more despite creeping back up weights.

Bramalea won 3 handicaps up to 1½m in 2010 for Brendan Duke, and better than ever when landing a gamble in a similar event at Epsom for current yard in August. Well held in listed race sole outing since.

Samsons Son is better than ever in light campaign, winning 2 of his 3 starts, including heavy-ground handicap over this trip at Goodwood in September. Up to a career-high mark after that.

Timeform 1-2-3:
1. Pekan Star
2. Willing Foe
3. Zuider Zee

Timeform View: A typically competitive renewal of this traditional end-of-season feature. Willing Foe catches the eye as a lightly-raced sort who shaped with promise on his belated return, but just as interesting is Pekan Star, who's had little racing himself and threatens to be suited by the longer trip. Zuider Zee is another who could well play a leading role.

2011 World Series of Poker Main Event November Nine Preview

For nine players, the 2011 WSOP Main Event bracelet is still within reach (Photos: PokerNews)

It's the most international WSOP ME final table ever -- with the nine players coming from seven different countries -- as well as one of the youngest ever, with seven of the nine players aged 26 or less.

After nearly four months of waiting, the 2011 World Series of Poker Main Event is almost ready to resume, with the nine remaining players -- a.k.a. the "November Nine" -- having returned to the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas to battle for the bracelet.

The final table starts just after noon Vegas time this Sunday, with Martin Staszko of the Czech Republic the current leader. Even ninth-place Sam Holden of Sussex has chips with which to work, however, meaning any of the nine can still take the title.

Here's a look at the chip stacks to which each player will be returning on Sunday:

Seat 1: Matt Giannetti (U.S.) -- 24,750,000
Seat 2: Badih Bounahra (Belize) -- 19,700,000
Seat 3: Eoghan O'Dea (Ireland) -- 33,925,000
Seat 4: Phil Collins (U.S.) -- 23,875,000
Seat 5: Anton Makiievskyi (Ukraine) -- 13,825,000
Seat 6: Sam Holden (U.K.) -- 12,375,000
Seat 7: Pius Heinz (Germany) -- 16,425,000
Seat 8: Ben Lamb (U.S.) -- 20,875,000
Seat 9: Martin Staszko (Czech Rep.) -- 40,175,000

There will be almost 35 minutes left in Level 36 when play resumes, where the blinds are 250,000/500,000 with a 50,000 ante. Thus even Holden has more than 24 BBs, which should afford him some time to be judicious at least during that first half-hour. And with everyone else within striking distance of the leader Staszko, the final table will likely provide much drama as the chips start moving back and forth.

As we've grown accustomed to over recent years, the stakes at the WSOP Main Event final table are enormous, with a huge gap between finishing first and ninth.

In fact, each player was already paid ninth-place prize money ($782,115) back in July, with the remaining funds placed into a money market account to draw a little bit of interest to add to the eight remaining spots. Here are the updated payouts for the final table:

1st: $8,715,638
2nd: $5,433,086
3rd: $4,021,138
4th: $3,012,700
5th: $2,269,599
6th: $1,720,831
7th: $1,314,097
8th: $1,010,015
9th: $782,115

Looking at the final nine players, two characteristics jump out. It's the most international WSOP ME final table ever, with the nine players coming from seven different countries. Interestingly, three of those seven nations -- Belize, the Czech Republic, and the Ukraine -- are being represented for the very first time at a WSOP ME final table. A total of 85 countries were represented among the 6,865 entrants in this year's WSOP Main Event, proving that poker is certainly a global game.

It is also an especially young final table, with seven of the nine players aged between 21-26. Only Staszko is in his 30s (aged 35), and Bounahra will be the table's elder statesman at 47. Anton Makiievskyi comes into this weekend still just 21 years old, and would be the youngest ever Main Event champion should he battle back from eighth place to win.

Of additional note is the fact that this Main Event final table is comprised of a number of especially tough competitors, all of whom (aside from Bounahra, a businessman) would fit into the "pro" category by most definitions.

Adding to the drama, coverage of this year's Main Event final table will be the most comprehensive ever, with every single hand -- with hole cards (shown after hands are completed) -- being televised on a 15-minute delay on the ESPN networks.

In the U.S., fans can watch them play down from nine players to three on Sunday on ESPN2 starting at 12:30 p.m. Vegas time. Then on Tuesday, Americans can watch from 6:00 p.m. Vegas time over on ESPN. The coverage will be shown online as well on the ESPN3 site (for those who are allowed access).

Meanwhile, for viewers outside the U.S., ESPN will also be carrying the coverage on several of its international networks. And if you don't happen to get any of those channels, non-Americans can view all of the coverage streaming over on the WSOP.com site.

Here are a few items about each player to contemplate as you follow along on Sunday and Tuesday:

staszko.pngMartin Staszko (1st, 40.175 million)
-- hopes to be the first player from the Czech Republic ever to win a WSOP bracelet
-- has cashed in five WSOP events this year (including the ME); his best finish in a preliminary event was 39th in the $1,500 PLO8 (Event No. 51)
-- brought a total of $20,000 to Las Vegas this summer to play in events; ended up playing in 15 total (including the ME) - Betfair Odds 5.8

odea.pngEoghan O'Dea (2nd, 33.925 million)
-- had five WSOP cashes in 2011 (including the ME and a final table at the World Series of Poker Europe in the €5,300 PLO event)
-- would be the second-ever WSOP ME winner from Ireland (Noel Furlong, 1999)
-- son of Irish player Donnacha O'Dea who made two WSOP Main Event final tables (1983, 1991); the pair comprise the first ever father-son duo to make WSOP ME FTs; Donnacha has won one WSOP bracelet (1998) and is a member of the European Poker Players Hall of Fame Betfair Odds 5.5

giannetti.pngMatt Giannetti (3rd, 24.75 million)
-- was in the bottom ten in chips (with just 11 big blinds) with 378 players left
-- was the short stack with 10 remaining, but doubled up twice (with pocket jacks both times) to survive
-- had himself a profitable break from the WSOP ME, winning the WPT Malta Main Event and the €200,000 first prize in late September Betfair Odds 7.8

collins.pngPhil Collins (4th, 23.875 million)
-- has yet to be all in once the entire tourney, enjoying an above-average stack throughout
-- has a bachelor's degree in business, earned at the University of South Carolina
-- is a Phil Collins fan, so doesn't mind his rail singing "In the Air Tonight" and other hits by the pop star Betfair Odds 7.0

lamb.pngBen Lamb (5th, 20.875 million)
-- has already clinched the 2011 WSOP Player of the Year, with five cashes (including ME), a bracelet in the $10K PLO Championship (Event No. 42), and two other final tables
-- finished 14th in the WSOP Main Event in 2009, and 156th in the WSOP ME in 2007
-- has more than $3.3 million in lifetime tourney earnings, by far the most of any of the final nine Betfair Odds 6.6

bounahra.pngBadih "Bob" Bounahra (6th, 19.7 million)
-- originally from Lebanon, also the birthplace of 2005 WSOP ME winner Joe Hachem
-- one of only two players from the central American country of Belize (pop. ~330,000) to enter this year's WSOP ME
-- stated repeatedly during play in July that seven-deuce offsuit was his favorite hand; was shown playing and winning with 72o during ESPN's coverage last week Betfair Odds 16.0

heinz.pngPius Heinz (7th, 16.425 million)
-- only the second German ever to make a WSOP ME final table (Henry Nowakowski finished seventh in 2001)
-- hopes to be the 12th German ever to win a WSOP bracelet (and first ME winner)
-- made another WSOP final table this summer, finishing seventh in a $1,500 no-limit hold'em event (Event No. 48) Betfair Odds 12.5

makiievskyi.pngAnton Makiievski (8th, 13,825 million)
-- was the start of Day 8 chip leader (with 27 players left)
-- hopes to be the fifth Ukrainian to earn a 2011 WSOP bracelet, and (as mentioned) the youngest WSOP ME winner ever (at age 21 years, 262 days); is already the youngest ever to play at a WSOP ME final table
-- his trip to Las Vegas this summer to play in the WSOP was the first time he'd ever visited the United States Betfair Odds 13.5

holden.pngSam Holden (9th, 12.375 million)
-- 2011 was the first WSOP for the 22-year-old, and the Main Event just his fourth WSOP event
-- has a degree in forensic science from the University of Kent
-- hopes to become the first-ever U.K.-born WSOP Main Event winner Betfair Odds 17.5
