Follow The Money: Sardanaplus the horse to back at Catterick

"Sardanaplus did finish last season with a win over this trip at Thirsk and is now 5lbs higher for that, but he has run well on both his previous reappearances."

Back Sardanapalus @ 5.1 Catterick 15:20

Welcome to Follow The Money where our three selections come from the cards at Catterick and Lingfield...

Our first selection today comes at Catterick and in the 7f Handicap at 15:20 there has been solid support for Sardanapalus who has come in to 5.2 from 8.2. This Kevin Ryan 4yo makes his seasonal debut today looking to improve on what was a mixed bag of runs last season in which he started and finished with good efforts but had plenty of ups and down in between. He did finish last season with a win over this trip at Thirsk and is now 5lbs higher for that, but he has run well on both his previous reappearances winning on debut as a 2yo and finishing a good 2nd in a better race than this at Newmarket as a 3yo, and with the drying ground definitely in his favour he looks certain to run his race today.

Next up is the day's negative which comes in Lingfield's 7f Handicap at 15:30. The horse in question is King Bertie who has eased in the betting out to 3.211/5 having been as low as 2.25n/a. He got off the mark at the second attempt when odds on in an average maiden at this course back in February. He is now put straight into handicap company; his mark looks fair but this looks quite a competitive affair with some similarly lightly raced, potential improvers in opposition including one for Richard Hannon and one for Luca Cumani which has been strongly supported. So whilst the selections should be thereabouts he could be worth taking on today.

For our final selection we stay at Lingfield for our second selection which comes in the 1m Handicap at 17:00 and goes by the name of Refreshestheparts, who has shortened in to 2.546/4 from 3.39/4. Only the four runners take their chance in this but the market suggests it should be fought out between the selection and Yojojo both of whom are looking to follow up last time out victories. The selection has been a consistent sort recently winning 3 of her last 5 and she had excuses for the other two. She is giving weight away to all 3 rivals but the booking of Richard Hughes could be significant and the money down suggests she could get her head in front again.

Follow The Money: Get with the Girl at Catterick

"With a record of three places from four over this trip and his penchant for give in the ground, Hydrant is definitely one to keep on side today."

Back Hydrant @ 5.24/1 Carlisle 16:00

Today's three bets run at Carlisle and Catterick.

We start at Carlisle and the Maiden 6f event at 14:40 in which Vanity's Girl has cemented her place at the head of the market, shortening from 3.211/5 in to 2.47/5. With all bar two of this 10 runner affair having contested more than 80 races without success, it is not a surprise that punters have been drawn to this once-raced filly and in particular her decent second in a Doncaster sprint over the minimum trip. Having missed the break that day and shown her best work at the finish, she looks sure to appreciate the step up to 6f.

To Catterick now and in the 15:30 Samarkand is the day's negative, having drifted from 2.588/5 out to 3.613/5. One win from eight starts sets alarm bells ringing straightaway and that stat isn't exactly enhanced by the fact that that victory came in June 2011 off a mark still 8lb lower than today's (on Kempton's polytrack as opposed to the soft surface currently in evidence at Carlisle). With all these factors to take into account we are happy, at the price, to take on Sir Mark Prescott's gelding.

Our final mover comes in the next at Carlisle, the Class 5 handicap at 16:00, in the shape of Hydrant who has been supported from 8.27/1 in to 5.24/1. Unable to get a blow in either of his last two runs, the gelding returns to a track where he finished third of 11 on his sole previous visit. That fact, together with a record of three places from four over this trip and his penchant for give in the ground, makes Hydrant definitely one to keep on side today.

Timeform Radio Racing Tips: Three for the mud at Catterick and Carlisle

"Bryan Smart’s Commanche has form on testing ground and boasts 2-y-o form that makes him look well treated off 66."

Back Commanche @ 6.25/1 in the 15:00 at Carlisle

Timeform's Martin Dixon has waded through the form at these two rain-soaked northern tracks to pick out three recommended bets...

Just as the weather looked to have turned the corner, the rain has come again in bucket loads, in the North at least, and that means we're racing in the mud at Carlisle and Catterick this afternoon.

This could be crucial in the sprints in particular, as at both these tracks the fields tend to come stand-side in the straight on soft/heavy ground, changing the effect of the draw. My advice: opt for higher drawn horses in 5f/6f races, leading us nicely on to a couple of today's bets.

I'm taking a bit of a risk backing Commanche in Carlisle's 15:00, as in three starts so far this year he hasn't fully fired, but I'm hoping that a 51-day break will have had a positive effect, and stall 11 (of 11) could well ensure he gets an optimum position. Bryan Smart's inmate has form on testing ground and boasts 2-y-o form that makes him look well treated off 66.

Ingenti is a filly that's caught my eye recently, looking as if she's working her way back to peak form with placed efforts the last twice, and in Catterick's 17:45 she looks to have been found a weak race to gain a second career win. Most of her form is on quicker ground, but she's shaped with sufficient promise a couple of times on soft to suggest she handles the mud, and it's a plus that her small yard have had a recent winner.

Red Orator is another that I'm backing this afternoon in the 3:30 at Carlisle. Mark Johnston's 3-y-o is hard to assess after just two runs but his pedigree suggests that he should appreciate a thorough test of stamina and be better than a mark in the low 70s (his dam won the Group 1 Prix Royal Oak over 15.5f).

Recommended Bets
Back Commanche @ 6.25/1 in the 15:00 at Carlisle
Back Ingenti @ 9.08/1 in the 17:45 at Catterick
Back Red Orator @ 6.05/1 in the 15:30 at Carlisle

Catterick Placepot: Wednesday August 29

Indego Blues is one of two three-year-olds in the race and should appreciate the drop back in trip after disappointing on quick ground over seven furlongs last time.

Natasha Coates is in North Yorkshire this afternoon for her tilt at the Placepot...

14:10 - The first race on the card looks a tricky affair, now down to six runners suggesting two selections will be necessary. The pick on form is Fidget, who improved from his debut to finish two and a half lengths third to Stand of Glory at Thirsk, and should go better again, back down in class. The ground is an unknown for most of these and, with that in mind, it may pay to take a risk on the one horse who has at least got form under testing conditions, namely Betty Boo. On debut at Nottingham, she ran her best race on heavy ground, and disappointing runs since could arguably be put down to unsuitable conditions. She showed a bit more on her good to soft nursery debut last time at Newcastle to back that up and is chanced to get the Placepot off to a good start.

14:40 - Another race with very few proven on the ground and plenty of already exposed types. Once-raced Vanity's Girl is the clear pick on form and will be suited by the step up in trip after finishing a promising six length runner-up to Sir Maximilian at Doncaster in June. That form has turned out well with both Million Faces and stablemate Planetex going on to win. She has had a break since then, and could go one better today for a yard that's in the winners. For our purposes, a top three finish will be enough.

15:10 - Solar View looks a solid selection from Sir Mark Prescott's stable, where Luke Morris makes the trip for this horse only. The yard has had many horses placed of late, despite missing out on the top prize, which suits our purpose and at a track that the trainer has a good record at, Solar View, who is 5 lb well in, should be in the mix at the end. There are doubts over his ability on soft ground, however, so we'll take out some insurance. Course specialist Bijou Dan is a consistent horse, scoring a hat-trick of seconds this season, and given that he is sure to handle the ground, we'll put our faith in the veteran.

15:40 - Mark Johnston's Idler has good claims to follow up under a penalty, after a career-best effort at Newmarket to finish one and a half lengths clear of Minalisa. The drop back in grade should help now against older horses and stepping up to seven furlongs. He didn't get home over that distance as a two-year-old, but is tried again over a course that he won at on heavy ground last year. The combination of Silvestre de Sousa and his old boss have a great record at Catterick, to offer some confidence in our selection. Half A Billion is second choice with Lee Topliss taking the ride, at the track that he has landed half of his rides for the trainer. Another who'll race up with the pace, Half A Billion steps back up to seven furlongs for the first time since May, only 2 lb higher than his last winning mark and should be thereabouts.

16:10 - Llewellyn and Indego Blues are the picks for this six-furlong handicap. Both from the David Nicholls stable, and with some course form, they have every chance to fill the top spots. Llewellyn joined Nicholls from Bill Turner last time after finishing runner-up in a seller here and will handle the ground over this trip. Indego Blues is one of two three-year-olds in the race and should appreciate the drop back in trip after disappointing on quick ground over seven furlongs last time. He now carries 2 lb less, and back under optimum conditions, should run into a place.

16:40 - Something of a risk in this final race, now Penang Pegasus is withdrawn, with two untested picks. Pugnacious has been racing on the polytrack, and goes back to the turf for the first time since his debut. The first-time blinkers are chanced to help for only his second run in a handicap though, with the very able assistance of Danny Tudhope on board. No Dominion has yet to try this distance and we are no closer to knowing if he may stay after having bad luck in running the last twice over ten furlongs. He is given a chance on this occasion to run well after a month off on though, now down in class for a stable in form.

Selections:

14:10 - 3, 5
14:40 - 9
15:10 - 2, 8
15:40 - 1, 5
16:10 - 4, 6

Nick Shiambouros' Patented 80/20 Bet: Catterick, 16:50

80/20 RSS / / 28 February 2012 / 1 Comments

We're at Catterick today for Nick's 80/20 bet but who is he backing for success?

Today's 80/20 is The Red Laird in the 16.50 at Catterick.

This gelding finished second to Storm Survivor at Plumpton last month. He made a couple or errors but kept on well in the closing stages to finish a clear second.I think he sets a good standard in this race and should run well at a fair price. At present he is trading at [4.8] on the exchange.

Nick explains why he expects today's 80/20 to get the week off to a winning start......

Will Nick's selection put on a good 'show' this afternoon?...

Why this Choice is the right choice as regards today's 80/20 bet....

Catterick Bridge

Catterick Bridge

"The five-furlong track at Catterick is downhill all the way and that’s going to help Blown It carry his speed that bit longer after a couple of good in-frame efforts"

Catterick is the venue for today's placepot...

14:00 - Code Cracker is pretty obviously up to bagging herself a maiden judged on her debut fourth at Folkestone last month and this looks an eminently winnable one. If there's a potential improver among the remainder then it's likely Erdaada, who is one for believers in the benefit of a change of jockey. She looked promising on her debut at Haydock and had possible excuses when behind Joshua The First at Ayr last time.

14:30 - Dark Spirit's half-brother Dark Ranger stays all day so there's good reason to believe she won't be troubled by the step up to two miles in the seller. She's the pick of the weights and makes the cut for the placepot along with Drop The Hammer, for whom the chance of a soft lead is just about enough to overlook an abysmal run over hurdles on Sunday.

15:00 - The market has this as a tight race, and it is, but the one that really catches the eye is Night Trade. Her two career wins have both come at Catterick, including this race off 2 lb higher last year, and she's had clear excuses for below-par efforts the last twice. Everything points to a big run today.

15:30 - Silvestre de Sousa making all on Cat o' Nine Tails is probably the likeliest outcome here. If not, then it'll hopefully be Union Island picking her off late. They look the two to take in a race that could well be the downfall of many a placepot.

16:00 - The five-furlong track at Catterick is downhill all the way and that's going to help Blown It carry his speed that bit longer after a couple of good in-frame efforts. We're taking on a trio of last-time winners in a competitive enough race for the grade, but Blown It looks just about banker material.

16:30 - Eijaaz should have the beating of Hel's Angel judged on their running in a course-and-distance event last month, but all the same the safest option might just be to take them both, not least because it means covering all angles tactically, one a hold-up performer, the other a front runner.

Selections: 16 lines

14:00 - 5, 7
14:30 - 4, 7

Carlisle's unique lady riders meeting is tonight's placepot target......

With Glorious Goodwood having taken its last breath, and Galway hanging on by the skin of its teeth, now seems as good a time as any to turn attention to summer jumping....

With the Stewards' and the consolation to negotiate among today's Goodwood placepot this could easily go very wrong, but the 'pot' is going to dwarf any of the others and it's a case of 'you've got to be in it to win it', so here goes......

The turf season gets underway at Catterick this afternoon

The turf season gets underway at Catterick this afternoon

"Danceintothelight was rather more fully campaigned as a juvenile hurdler, winning two of four completed starts, and with fitness assured and conditions fine, he looks one to keep on side."

Contrary to others, I have no problem with the turf season getting under way with a decidedly workaday card at Catterick. Sure, there'll be the odd big-race meeting here and there, but it's such tracks as Catterick - and such horses as Fremen et al - who are going to occupy the bulk of our time in the coming months. Get used to it!

14:20 - No half-volley looseners to get us off to an easy start, then, the opening sprint handicap for apprentices making for a particularly tricky first leg. A low draw looks set to prove an advantage and Wanchai Whisper, in four, makes some appeal on her first start for Mark Rimmer. Her fitness is assured, and even if she hasn't won for a while is reasonably consistent and is suited by coming off a strong pace. Rio's Girl is less exposed than most and warrants plenty of respect after a couple of getting-to-know-you runs at Wolverhampton for her new yard.

14:50 - April Fool has been in good touch on the AW, winning three since the turn of the year, but he's just as effective on turf and looks a sound starting-off point in the seven-furlong handicap which follows. He usually forces the pace, but he's shown before that doing so is no a prerequisite, so he'll be equally happy tracking the leaders with a couple of other front-runners in the line-up. Dazeen isn't one for win purposes, but for our needs is well worth incorporating. Despite being a maiden, he's finished placed on ten of his nineteen starts - including the last five - and he showed himself to have returned in form over an insufficient trip at Southwell earlier in the month. Lindoro arrives at the top of his game and is a more straightforward selection, proven both on turf and over seven furlongs.

15:20 - All bar Chookie Hamilton and The Oil Magnate have a question to answer on grounds of fitness in the twelve-furlong handicap. Whatever the concerns, it's difficult not to have Kiama Bay on side as he's progressive and has the look of a deserving favourite twelve weeks on from an impressive success at Wolverhampton. Karen McLintock has had three winners from her last six runners over jumps, and whilst none of those were Mason Hindmarsh, he's still one to view positively this afternoon. It had looked as if he could progress well as a hurdler after making a winning start at Aintree in October, but his jumping let him down when pitched in deep at Cheltenham next time and he hasn't been seen since. He wasn't tried beyond a mile and a quarter on the Flat last term and, given the manner of that hurdles success, there's good reason to imagine he could do better for the step up to this trip.

15:50 - The three Dandy Nicholls-trained runners in the seven-furlong claimer rather complicate matters. Aged eleven, Fremen was having his first ever start on Fibresand at Southwell last time and that below-form effort is readily disregarded. Like that one, Royal Dignitary is prolific at this level, but he hasn't been seen since last August and, on balance, it's better to look elsewhere. Thrust Control isn't the most consistent, but he won at Southwell earlier in the month and has the services of Silvestre de Sousa to boost his chance. Apache Ridge's limitations are firmly established, but this is his level and he'll be much more at home back in plating company having been below form in a handicap at Wolverhampton a fortnight ago.

16:20 - It's time to husband lines, and having swerved Dandy Nicholls in the previous race, we're going in with him in the six-furlong maiden. Sinadinou's juvenile form looks comfortably the best on show, and his sub-par reappearance can easily be attributed to the Fibresand.

16:50 - Getting to the final leg will represent a success in itself, and things don't get much easier once one is there. Madamlily hasn't won since her two-year-old days, but she ran well over this course and distance when last seen on the Flat in October, and after one encouraging outing over hurdles, she returns to the level in what looks a good spot. Danceintothelight was rather more fully campaigned as a juvenile hurdler, winning two of four completed starts, and with fitness assured and conditions fine, he looks one to keep on side. Eijaaz is capable on his day and is respected, but the doubts are sufficient to prevent him from making the placepot slip; it may just be worth chucking a few quid at him to win, though.

Selections:

14:20: 8,9
14:50: 7,13,14
15:20: 6,9
15:50: 3,8
16:20: 8
16:50: 4,7

With the imminent Flat season looming large over this jumps reporter, there really is no danger of me taking on either Lingfield or Southwell. Small fields abound at Taunton, so let's stake low and hope for a 'payer'......

This week sees the return of Flat turf racing at Catterick on Wednesday, but until then we'll have to settle with today's mediocre card at Wolverhampton....

With the small fields at Wincanton, there's little option but to have a crack at Hexham for this afternoon's placepot...

Timeform Radio Racing Tips: Wagers at Catterick and Plumpton

Both market leaders are of interest in the 14:50 handicap hurdle at Catterick

Both market leaders are of interest in the 14:50 handicap hurdle at Catterick

"Argentia has caught the eye travelling sweetly for a long way against useful rivals on both her last two starts and backing her at [14.0] or bigger with a view to trading out at [7.0] and [2.0] could be a value trade."

Graham Cunningham makes the picks today and he has many angles to consider including a potential big-priced In-Play punt

Things have been ticking along nicely for yours truly since the weather improved, but I can't see today being especially busy on the punting front and most of the races I've looked at haven't thrown up much.

That said, Plumpton's 14:00 does offer a couple of points of interest. Pepite Rose is trading at [1.67] here and I think she'll win.

However, Argentia has caught the eye travelling sweetly for a long way against useful rivals on both her last two starts and backing her at [14.0] or bigger with a view to trading out at [7.0] and [2.0] could be a value trade.

Recent rain at Catterick puts a different complexion on several races and the 14:50 is one in question.

Fujin Dancer caught the eye at Rasen, but his rider has yet to partner a winner and a split stakes play involving course winner Kings Counsel and back-to-form Pete could be the way forward.

Recommended Bets:
Plumpton 14:00: Back Pepite Rose at [1.66] or better and back Argentia at [14.0] or better with a view to laying off at [7.0] and [2.0]
Catterick 14:50: Back Pete and Kings Counsel at [5.8] and [6.6] or better
