2000 Guineas: Dawn stars on Newmarket list

Long-time favourite Dawn Approach tops 14 colts confirmed for Saturday's 2000 Guineas at Newmarket...

The Jim Bolger-trained colt has dominated the betting for the 2000 Guineas after ending his 2012 campaign unbeaten in six starts, culminating in an impressive victory over stablemate Leitir Mor in the Dewhurst Stakes.

Victory for the Dawn Approach could provide owner Godolphin with a little comfort after a torrid few days following the Mahmood Al Zarooni drugs scandal.

Leitir Mor is also among the contenders for the Guineas, with Aidan O'Brien having the pick of four from Cristoforo Colombo, George Vancouver, Lines Of Battle and Mars.

Richard Hannon appears to have a strong hand with Craven Stakes victor Toronado and last year's Racing Post Trophy second Van Der Neer.

Hannon has, however, taken out Craven Stakes runner-up Havana Gold.

Free Handicap winner Garswood is set to represent Richard Fahey, while Greenham third Moohaajim is Marco Botti's sole contender.

Correspondent, Dont Bother Me, Glory Awaits and the Sir Henry Cecil-trained Kyllachy Rise complete the list of possible runners.

Jamie Lynch's Flat Season Preview: Look to the stars

With the Flat season upon us, Jamie Lynch hijacks one of the oldest - and phoniest - belief systems in the book, the signs of the zodiac, to analyse a dozen of the major racing personalities for 2013...

This novel that McCoy is supposed to be writing may turn out to be a hit given he has something in common with Kingsley Amis, Henry Fielding, Daphne du Maurier and William Shakespeare: they're all Taurus. It's written in the stars, you see, which is just as well as God only knows when he'll get the time to write it on earth.

Then again, according to Astrology In Depth, Taureans hate discomfort, dislike hard work and are therefore inclined to seek occupations where they can hold back rather than risk themselves: being anything other than a jump jockey, in other words. When McCoy nearly won the Gold Cup aboard Sir des Champs it had nothing to do with horoscopes. Dirty scopes yes, but horoscopes no.

It's the Babylonians' fault. The race that gave us one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World - their Hanging Gardens - undid all that good work by also leaving the legacy of one of the Seven Biggest Red Herrings of the Modern World, courtesy of astrology. The other six, for what it's worth, are democracy, Feng Shui, the KitchenAid, multivitamins, the going stick and John Bishop.

I, and hopefully you, can't have astrology at any price, though I'm a Libra, hence a cynic by nature. The idea that our lives are governed by celestial forces out of this world is out of this world, almost as hard to stomach as the fact Russell Grant can and does charge £22.99 for a ten minutes on the phone. I know this as it says so on his website, but also because I rang up for a racing-related reading, to determine what the stars in the sky say about the stars on the level for the 2013 Flat season.

ARIES (March 21 - April 19)
Case study - John Gosden (born March 30)

Russell says: The awards of last year hang heavy around your neck, but keeping a cool head, even under various gravitas-giving hats, is the hallmark of Aries. Remember how tall you are. You're looked up to by your peers, particularly in interviews. Keep talking the American talk. Focus on the spring equinox and the positive of the sun moving in rather than the spring clean and the negative of Nathaniel, Great Heavens, Izzi Top and Thought Worthy moving out. You still have the skill, you still have the fire and, most importantly, you still have The Fugue.

TAURUS (April 20 - May 20)
Case study - Dawn Approach (born April 23)

Russell says: The bull. You're strong like one, you took none of it in 2012, and the bigger china shops are open for you this year. Once you're at full force there's no stopping you. However, yours is a fixed sign, meaning you can be slow to change, including gear, so beware those flat spots that could prevent high points. Similarly fixed are your targets, and you apparently won't go that extra mile-and-a-half, for the ultimate test at Epsom, though the people around you may want a new approach.

GEMINI (May 21 - June 20)
Case study - Pearl Bloodstock (first ever runner June 2)

Russell says:  Think Gemini, think twins, and the twin virtues of intent and megabucks makes you an irresistable power in 2013. Wednesday is Gemini's luck day, though any day is a lucky day for those whose door you come-a-knocking with unrefusable offers. If you can't breed 'em, buy 'em. Look out Ballydoyle and Godolphin, there's a new superpower in town. Geminis go well with other Geminis, their compitability high and ambitions the same, so the link-up with Jamie Spencer (born June 8) is a match made in heaven, literally star-crossed lovers.

CANCER (June 21 - July 22)
Case study - USA (Independence Day July 4)

Russell says: Just like the crab, American racing is going only sideways, if not backwards. That hard outer shell, used for protection, is in danger of acting as a buffer to the rest of the world. You've got a lot going for you, so look out rather than in, and have the courage of your convictions to see certain issues through. The racing world will be a better place with more of you in it, so be Wise (Dan), and let's see the Animal (Kingdom) in you.

LEO (July 23 - August 22)
Case study - Black Caviar (born August 18)

Russell sings Simply Red, appropriately Stars: Anyone who ever saw you, would tell you the way I'm feeling. Anyone who ever took on you, would have to tell you that they're hurting inside. The only thing that left you daunted, was the feeling that you ain't Frankel. But he has gone while you are still about, turn up and win it, can't get beat. And I, see a name in the stars, it's you Black Caviar. I've seen you, at Ascot, I hope you come again.

VIRGO (August 23 - September 22)
Case study - Ryan Moore (born September 18)

Russell says: Virgos, symbolised by the virgin, are often considered to be shy individuals, but that can sometimes mask the demon within, as is the case with you. You're hungry, probably literally and certainly metaphorically, and the time has come for you to regain your rightful place at the top of your profession. To get there you need only two things: more luck than in recent years, and a certain knighted Libran to start re-pulling his considerable weight.

LIBRA (September 23 - October 22)
Case study - Aidan O'Brien (born October 16)

Russell says: Listen. Because Librans enjoy balance in their lives, they like to keep all options open, favouring discussions which tend to be more seated than heated. Librans have loads of speed. You, weighing up everything on the symbolic scales, are meticulous, but also far-sighted, even in dodgy sunglasses. Camelot's dimming star is balanced by the rising star of Kingsbarns, and amid all the pressure you, as an even-tempered Libran, keep your cool. You're Mr Cool. Mr Coolmore.

SCORPIO (October 23 - November 21)
Case study - Channel 4 (first broadcast November 2)

Russell says: Like the scorpion, you're fiercly independent, which is a good job as you have the field to yourself now. Like the scorpion can lose its tail and promptly grow a new one, you too have tremendous regenerative powers, and this is a big year for you following the latest evolution. Like the scorpion would rather kill itself than be killed, you force the issues and have a style that some find overbearing, but mostly it's exciting and, with a bit of Luck and spot of Cunning, you'll revolutionise the way we watch racing.

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 - December 21)
Case study - Graham Lee (born December 16)

Russell says:  The archer is depicted as a centaur, half man half beast, making Sagittarius a dual sign, and you are the ultimate dual jockey. You literally had your ups and downs over jumps, but the Flat is where it's at, and you, as an archer, are aiming higher and higher: well over 100 of your arrows will hit the bullseye this year. Influential is the North Star. In fact, you are the North Star.

CAPRICORN (December 22 - January 19)
Case study - Marco Botti (born December 23)

Russell says:  Being born just one day into Capricorn puts you on the cusp, and you're on the cusp of the big time. Your symbol is the goat, who loves to climb to the top of the mountain, and you too are showing that same ambition, with a new base, new targets and new stars. One such star, Moohaajim, might just give a certain Taurean something to think about in a

AQUARIUS (January 20 - February 18)
Case study - Frankie Dettori (born January 23)

Russell says: Who knows? Even horoscopes can't predict the unpredictable. Look at last year. Let's just hope you keep out of big bother and big brother this time.

PISCES (February 19 - March 20)
Case study - Hydrogen (born March 12)

Russell says: A water sign. H2-oh no. Rarely does the reality match the hype, even when the stars are aligned. It's all about the money, money, money, and it's not so easy to forget about the price tag when it's £2.5m, the most expensive yearling in the world last year. Who knows if you'll become a star, but the star-signs are there.

Australian Derby: Strike The Stars to take in Rosehill Guineas en route

Blake Shinn: Rides Strike The Stars

Blake Shinn: Rides Strike The Stars

"Strike The Stars didn't get the breaks when only seventh behind old nemesis Mosheen in the Randwick Guineas last time."

Trainer Anthony Cummings has said that his three-year-old Strike The Stars will swerve the Doncaster Mile and instead head for the Rosehill Guineas on his way to the Australian Derby...

Cummings confirmed that the Doncaster was always seen a a fall-back for the Savabeel gelding and, with the Australian Guineas runner-up in fine form, the Rosehill Guineas is very much the plan, with the $1.5 million Australian Derby (currently trading at [13.0]) on April 14 the main target.

Rosehill's $2.25 million BMW on April 7, in which he will meet older horses at weight-for-age, is still a possibility and he trades at [18.0] for that race, also over 2400m.

Blake Shinn will take over aboard Strike The Stars when he goes in the middle leg of Sydney's autumn triple crown for three-year-olds on Saturday, last year's Group 3 Gloaming Stakes winner looking for his first victory at the highest level.

Strike The Stars didn't get the breaks when only seventh behind old nemesis Mosheen in the Randwick Guineas last time, the filly having beaten him by three lengths in in the Australian Guineas at Flemington earlier in the month.

Mosheen herself, who is trading as short-priiced favourite for the Australian Oaks and at [24.0] for the same day's Doncaster Handicap, will reportedly attempt to further her claims for either race in the $400,000 Vinery Stud Stakes on April 7.

In other news, Corey Brown will ride Paul Messara's Rekindled Alliance is the Guinease should the horse take his chance.

Last year's winner Sweet Lightning has been taken out of the Lincoln, in which 2010 victor Penitent will now carry top weight at Doncaster on Saturday......

Godolphin's Gamilati has undergone surgery to remove a chip from her near-fore ankle and may now be forced to miss the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket on May 6.......

Though the culmination of the all-weather season, it's difficult to see Winter Derby day at Lingfield as anything other than the beginning on the new Flat season given the quality of horses and the promising performances on show. Gabon v Niger: Panthers to devour Mena Stars

African Cup Of Nations RSS / / 22 January 2012 / Leave a Comment

German coach Gernot Rohr brings Gallic flair to the Gabon team

German coach Gernot Rohr brings Gallic flair to the Gabon team

"Since 2003, 16 of Gabon’s 21 friendly and competitive wins have come with clean sheets"

Gabon are eminently capable of emulating their co-hosts, Equatorial Guinea, and starting their campaign with a win, says Tobias Gourlay

Monday 16:00 (Live on British Eurosport)
Gabon [1.66] Niger [6.8] draw [3.8]

Gabon

The Panthers have a French spine. Goalkeeper Didier Ovono plays for Le Mans, central defender Bruno Manga turns out for Lorient, midfielder Eric Mouloungui is with Nice and striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang leads the line for Saint-Etienne. Gernot Rohr, the coach, is German, but was managing Nantes before taking this job around 18 months ago.

As hosts, the team hasn't played a competitive match since its final group game of the last Cup of Nations, when it erroneously believed its draw with Cameroon had taken it to the last eight. No such luck, but Monday's game is an excellent opportunity to take three points and raise the prospect of at least a quarter-final place this time.

Niger

Harouna Doula Gabde's ambition for his charges is limited. And no wonder - the team is built around Moussa Maazou, a strapping striker who hasn't been in form since he left Lokeren in Belgium two-and-a-half years ago.

The Mena Stars begin their first-ever finals tournament playing away to one of the co-hosts. They lost all three of their away games in qualifying, failing even to score in any of them.

Match Odds

Fifa ranks the teams closely together - Gabon are 91 in the world, Niger 98 - but Niger's poor away form in qualifying and lack of tournament experience make Gabon odds-on favourites to start with a win.

Over/Under Goals

Since September 2010, 11 of Gabon's 13 friendlies have stayed Under 2.5 Goals, which is a [1.59] shot for this match. Their two matches in 2012 have both finished goalless, making it 6/13 Under 1.5 Goals, including a 1-0 win over Niger in France last year.

Niger didn't score a single goal away from home in 2011. Four matches ended in competitive defeats to Sierra Leone (0-1) and Egypt (0-3), and friendly setbacks against Morocco (0-3) and Gabon (0-1).

Gabon Win to Nil

Since 2003, 16 of Gabon's 21 friendly and competitive wins have come with clean sheets, including 5/5 home wins in the last two years.

If you assume Gabon will win, the two teams' poor scoring records suggest 1-0 is the most likely scoreline. That's on offer at [6.4] in the Correct Score market, but if you want to cover the possibility of the hosts producing a more convincing performance, take the [2.5] about Gabon to Win to Nil.

Recommended Bet: Back Gabon Win to Nil @ [2.5]

Irish Weekend Preview: Stars on show at Hennessy meeting

Timeform Features RSS / Timeform / 04 February 2011 / Leave a Comment

Willie Mullins: Has chances in three of the four Grade 1s at Leopardstown

Willie Mullins: Has chances in three of the four Grade 1s at Leopardstown

"The defection of Pandorama means that the result of the Hennessy itself is unlikely to have much of an impact on the current Gold Cup market, but the absence of Noel Meade’s stable star has made this contest much more interesting from a betting point of view. "

The Irish Hennessy meeting at Leopardstown is the last stepping stone before the Cheltenham Festival for many leading ante-post fancies from across the Irish Sea and the four Grade 1 events on the card all promise to be high-class renewals.

The defection of Pandorama means that the result of the Hennessy itself is unlikely to have much of an impact on the current Gold Cup market, but the absence of Noel Meade's stable star has made this contest much more interesting from a betting point of view.

Unexposed British raider Pride of Dulcote is the one that has the potential to shake up the Gold Cup betting the most, with many people seeing Paul Nicholls' progressive second-season chaser as a dark horse for the Blue Riband event in March. However, the form of his narrow win over Punchestowns in a graduation chase at Newbury in December took a knock when that rival disappointed at Cheltenham last weekend and he looks to represent little value at current odds given the amount he needs to find with the likes of Joncol and Money Trix.

Last year's winner Joncol bounced right back to his high-class best when third to Pandorama in the Lexus Chase at Leopardstown over Christmas and he filled the same place in that race last season before getting the better of Cooldine in a tight finish in this corresponding event. Paul Nolan's runners weren't in much form before the turn of the year, and it wouldn't come as a great surprise to see Joncol turn around form with the runner-up Money Trix and follow up last year's win.

The Deloitte Hurdle promises to be the best novice run in Ireland this season and it will feature the return to action of Zaidpour. Prominent in the market for both the Supreme and Neptune Novice hurdles at the Festival, the useful Flat recruit will be looking to regain the winning habit after being turned over at short odds here over Christmas.

Zaidpour may not have been able to maintain his unbeaten record over hurdles, but he did still shape as if the best horse in the race, staying on strongly when eventually asked for maximum effort after the last and beaten only a neck by First Lieutenant. Willie Mullins' representative remains an exciting prospect and should be given another chance to build on the excellent impression he made when running out a facile winner of the Royal Bond at Fairyhouse earlier in the season.

Hidden Universe made up for disappointing in the Champion Bumper at the Festival by going on to win each of his two subsequent starts last season, including a Grade 1 event at Punchestown in April, and made a really encouraging start over hurdles when running out a very easy winner of a maiden at this track over Christmas. The level of form he achieved in bumpers suggests he could prove the biggest threat to Zaidpour.

Willie Mullins is also responsible for the market leader in the DR P .J. Moriarty Novice Chase with Mikael d'Haguenet. Mikael d'Haguenet looked a top-notch prospect over hurdles in 2008/9 before he missed last season through injury, and looked set to beat Jessies Dream before falling at the last in the Drinmore Chase at Fairyhouse in December. He was sent off a hot favourite at Leopardstown next time, but, perhaps understandably given the absence that preceded it, seemed not to be over his Fairyhouse exertions fifteen days previously. He's been given a break since, but still doesn't look a solid betting proposition for the time being, especially at odds-on.

The other that deserves a mention is the Dessie Hughes-trained Magnanimity. Last seen when lowering the colours of Jessies Dream in the Grade 2 Killiney Novice Chase at Leopardstown, Magnanimity benefitted from a sound tactical ride that day and showed a really likeable attitude to repel the challenge of Gordon Elliott's charge close home. Magnanimity remains open to improvement over fences, but this drop back in trip is unlikely to play to his strengths and he will be of more interest

All the betting moves ahead of the evening racing at Wolverhampton...
