FA Cup Opta Stats: Tottenham v Bolton

Opta RSS / / 26 March 2012 / Leave a Comment

Spurs have won just one of their last seven fixtures in all competitions

Spurs have won just one of their last seven fixtures in all competitions

This is not a fixture that favours the away side and the Opta stats indicate Bolton's cup run is to end here...

The sides were level (1-1) when the original fixture was stopped due to Fabrice Muamba's collapse, with the goals coming courtesy of a Gareth Bale own-goal and a Kyle Walker header.

Only Everton (41), Arsenal (39) and Manchester United (38) have appeared in more FA Cup quarter-finals than Tottenham (36).

Spurs have been eliminated from three of their last four FA Cup quarter-finals.

Bolton have progressed through eight of their 13 previous FA Cup round six ties.

The Trotters have only lost one of their eight FA Cup sixth round games away from home (excluding replays), winning four and drawing three.

Tottenham have progressed through four of their previous six FA Cup ties against Bolton, including in round five in 2010.

None of the last 16 meetings between Spurs and Bolton in all competitions have been won by the visiting side.

The Trotters scored two own goals on their last FA Cup trip to White Hart Lane, losing the game 0-4 (in February 2010).

The North Londoners have won seven and lost none of their last eight home FA Cup games and have scored more than one in each of their last nine at White Hart Lane (27 in total).

Wanderers have scored exactly two goals in all four FA Cup games this term.

Jermain Defoe has scored three goals in four FA Cup outings this season.

The Opta stats suggest Everton are still on track to meet Liverpool in the last four, despite being held at home......

Chelsea may have to rely on their home form again to see them progress......

Robin van Persie, Junior Hoilett, Gylfi Sigurdsson and perhaps even Sylvan Ebanks-Blake could score this weekend, judging by these Opta trends......

Premier League Results: Vital wins for Rovers and Bolton

Premier League RSS / / 10 March 2012 / Leave a Comment

Are Blackburn running away from danger?

Are Blackburn running away from danger?

"Wolves look doomed and bettors have slashed their relegation odds to [1.39]."

Rovers and Wanderers pick up three vital points each against relegation rivals as Wolves look sunk and Hughes seethes. Meanwhile, O'Neill outfoxes Dalglish and Drogba earns three points for Chelsea...

It was an afternoon for unders backers in the Premier League as three of six fixtures - not inlcuding Everton v Tottenham -ended 1-0. However, there were big wins near the bottom of the table for two teams from the north west.

You can get [2.54] on Bolton to go down but Queens Park Rangers are in to [1.37] after their controversial defeat against at the Reebok Stadium. Mark Hughes was furious after the away side were denied a first-half goal even though Clint Hill's header had clearly crossed the line. The incident will reignite the debate about goal-line technology and video replays but Hughes' concerns are more immediate: his team are now in the drop zone as Bolton climb out following their win. They had Darren Pratley and Ivan Klasnic, who struck in the 86th minute, to thank for a victory which was matched at [8.2].

Blackburn were matched at [3.6] as they collected a crucial three points. Rovers kept their first clean sheet of the season at the Molineux as Junior Hoillet struck twice - one in each half. Rovers are up to 16th in the table, once place above Bolton, and are trading at 2.66 for the drop. Wolves, meanwhile, look doomed and bettors have slashed their relegation odds to [1.39].

Sunderland were matched at [6.0] as they edge out Liverpool at the Stadium of Light thanks to Nicklas Bendtner's second-half strike. This was the Reds second defeat in a row, following their Carling Cup triumph, and Sunderland are now just two points behind them in eighth place.

Roberto Di Matteo picked up his first Premier League win as Chelsea boss against ten man Stoke at Stamford Bridge. The Blues, who were matched at [1.69], had Didier Drgoba to thank as he struck the game's only goal in the second-half.

There was late drama at Villa Park as the hosts touched [20.0] before Andreas Weimann's first Premier League goal earned them all three points against Fulham.

Everton narrowly beat Tottenham at Goodison Park to blow the race to finish in the top four wide open......

Of all the matches in the Premier League this weekend, this is as close to a home banker as you might get. Wigan are in deep trouble whereas Norwich keep on showing they can more than compete at this level...

Tottenham's run of two straight defeats in the league has been talked about as a mini-crisis and though a trip to Goodison Park is never easy, Harry Redknapp's men are good for at least a point. Emmanuel Adebayor will be...

Opta Stats: More joy for Arsenal goal machine away to Bolton

Opta RSS / / 31 January 2012 / Leave a Comment

Two penalties against Aston Villa extended Robin van Persie's fine run

Two penalties against Aston Villa extended Robin van Persie's fine run

"Robin van Persie has scored 20 goals in his last 20 Premier League away appearances."

The Opta trends for the midweek Premier League games suggest that Robin van Persie will deliver again, while Danny Graham, Tim Cahill and Darren Bent all look good scorer bets...

Swansea v Chelsea (Tuesday, 19:45)
Danny Graham has scored in four of his last six Premier League starts at the Liberty Stadium
A slow start appeared to justify concerns that the former Watford striker would struggle to step up to the Premier League, but seven in 17 starts is a respectable return at a promoted club. The last of those, a winner against Arsenal, was arguably the most important of all, and showed that he can be relied upon on occasions like this.
Recommended Bet: Graham to score @ [3.9]

Everton v Manchester City (Tuesday, 20:00, Sky Sports 2)
Only Aston Villa (6) have been on the wrong end of more Tim Cahill goals in the Premier League than Man City (five)
Despite his position, Cahill is often Everton's shortest-priced player to score - a situation that may be remedied by the anticipated arrival of Nikica Jelavic - so his recent 13-month goal drought hit the Toffees hard. The Australian finally found the net in their last league game though, and the timing of his resurgence will unnerve Roberto Mancini.
Recommended Bet: Cahill to score @ [5.6]

Aston Villa v QPR (Wednesday, 19:45)
Darren Bent has scored three goals in his last four Premier League appearances and has netted 99 Premier League goals in total
It hasn't felt like a vintage season for Bent and yet his gift for hitting the target is so great that he has still managed to post a strike rate of close to a goal every other match. The England international is currently enjoying his most sustained scoring streak of the campaign, firing his last three outings, so will be optimistic of completing his century.
Recommended Bet: Bent to score @ [2.4]

Bolton v Arsenal (Wednesday, 20:00)
Robin van Persie has scored 20 goals in his last 20 Premier League away appearances
The Premier League's leading marksman attracted headlines for the wrong reasons in the FA Cup at the weekend, but even then grabbed a brace. He has scored 19 in 21 league starts and failed to notch in just four of his last 14 games in all competitions, so should pose plenty of problems for a Bolton defence clean sheet-less in 11.
Recommended Bet: van Persie to score @ [2.1]

Kenny Dalglish is honest if nothing else after Bolton defeat

Premier League RSS / / 22 January 2012 / 3 Comments

Kenny Dalglish has spent a lot more money than his predecessor Roy Hodgson but results haven't been that much better

Kenny Dalglish has spent a lot more money than his predecessor Roy Hodgson but results haven't been that much better

"It should be pointed out, though, that Dalglish’s untouchability does present problems of its own, for neither should the Reds’ coach be exempt from all culpability."

Liverpool's season suffered a huge setback with defeat at Bolton yesterday but Kenny Dalglish pulled no punches when it came to laying the blame on his players. He may be honest but he needs to start winning some matches, says Richard Aikman.

Kenny Dalglish has come in for a good deal of criticism of late. There is no question that his public position over the Luis Suarez affair was unacceptable, but the Liverpool manager should be commended for his unsparing public criticism of his players following their abject capitulation at Bolton Saturday night.

Liverpool, (now a well-priced [5.6] to finish the season in sixth place were outplayed, out-thought and outfought by a club that have spent most of the campaign languishing at the nether end of the division and who, before last night, had mustered just one league victory at home all campaign. Afterwards, it was only natural to expect the blame to be levelled at the referee or perhaps his assistant, such is the present day norm for match-day reactions. Arsene Wenger was a case in point last weekend when he tried to put Arsenal's deserved 3-2 defeat by Swansea down to a match official who had made "strange decisions" and a penalty award he described as "a complete imagination".

How refreshing it was, then, to hear a Premier League manager for once giving the supporters the benefit of some intelligence by telling it as it was. "We've got to look at ourselves and if that's the level (the players) expect to play then they'll not be here long," he said.

When offered the chance to explain the result away with a penalty appeal that went unheeded, he added: "That's not the problem. The problem starts with your attitude and your approach to the game and if that's not right then who are we to disrespect anyone and think we can go to any football ground and automatically get a result? Liverpool Football Club has not been built on that foundation, they've always been respectful to people who have paid and have worked hard to get the result. If they don't want to do that, then fine. I don't know where this attitude has come from but it had better go quickly."

Cue: collective sigh of relief. Too many modern-day managers spend their entire post-match press conference seeking excuses, alibis and smokescreens in a thinly-veiled bid to protect their obviously culpable players. Indeed, one of the reasons so many players that leave Arsenal are so complimentary about Wenger is precisely because he never hangs them out to dry. And the reason most managers don't publicly criticise their own is for fear of losing the dressing room.

Dalglish, however, is an exception to the rule because he would have to get his side relegated and burn down Anfield before losing the unswerving support of the Kop. No player is bigger than the club and not even Steven Gerrard is bigger than King Kenny, who decided to use his position to inflict an entirely justifiable withering attack on his own.

It should be pointed out, though, that Dalglish's untouchability does present problems of its own, for neither should the Reds' coach be exempt from all culpability. After all, unlike his harshly vilified predecessor Roy Hodgson, it is Dalglish who was given the keys to the coffers and his £100m plus outlay on players has not paid dividends hitherto. His claims in August that the club had spent "responsibly" are beginning to ring hollow with his side lying seventh in the table and 16 points off the top, having played a game more than leaders Manchester City.

Andy Carroll has yet to justify a tenth of his £35m price tag, while Luis Suarez, aside from letting down his team-mates in the whole Patrice Evra affair, has not translated star quality into goals. Five strikes in 18 league matches is a poor return for a player at a club who, before yesterday, had created the second most goalscoring chances than any other club this season. In total Liverpool have scored just 25 goals all season: significantly less than half of the 57 Manchester City have managed, and their lowest return by this stage of the season in 40 years.

On Saturday, with the exception of Craig Bellamy and Pepe Reina, the Reds were abject, ceding possession cheaply, defending naively and receiving no protection from Charlie Adam or Gerrard, who failed to track back. On a day when Chelsea dropped points and Newcastle lost this was a chance to make gains on the top four, but after Saturday's performance they are as likely to earn a Champions League place as 16th-placed QPR are to finish in the top ten.

Dalglish fell short of suggesting that he will delve into the transfer market to salvage his side's flagging campaign, saying that there is "no need for a knee-jerk". In all honesty, to do so would represent an admission of failure on his part; it would highlight just how poor the likes of Stewart Downing and Jordan Henderson have been. However, he needs to do something soon to inspire a reaction from his players, who yesterday seemingly had half an eye on Wednesday's Carling Cup semi-final against Manchester City at Anfield and Saturday's FA Cup fourth round encounter against Manchester United.

Perhaps the public scolding will suffice. It can't do any harm because Liverpool need something to rouse themselves from their present state of torpour. Either way it was refreshing to see the players being berated rather than pampered for once. For that much Kenny deserves the thanks of us all.

Mario Balotelli scored a last-gasp winner as Manchester City beat Spurs but could well have been sent off earlier. At the Emirates, Manchester United took all three points as Arsenal's troubles continue......

Premier League Relegation Odds: Bolton in freefall without Holden

Premier League RSS / Andrew Atherley / 12 October 2011 / Leave a Comment

Holden role. Stuart Holden excels playing just in front of the back four.

Holden role. Stuart Holden excels playing just in front of the back four.

"It may be that Coyle was lucky to find Holden when he arrived at Bolton – and has now been unlucky to lose him. With no solution in sight, however, Bolton look a team to keep opposing on the road and their relegation odds may well shrink further."

He's not one of the more glamorous names of the Premier League but Bolton's American star Stuart Holden is absolutely key to Owen Coyle's side and their chances of avoiding the drop. Just look at the stats, says Andrew Atherley.

Bolton looked in rude health when they won 4-0 at QPR on the opening day of the season but they have been haemorrhaging badly since then and the pain may well continue when they visit Wigan on Saturday.

Before the QPR game punters were warned in this column that Bolton had become a risky proposition on the road in the absence of key midfielder Stuart Holden, who broke his leg against Manchester United in March. The advice may have seemed poor after the 4-0 win, but subsequent events have emphasised the vulnerability of a Holden-less Bolton.

With the USA international now facing another six months on the sidelines after a brief comeback in the Carling Cup last month, Bolton look set to stay in deep trouble.
In 26 games last season with Holden holding the midfield, only the big six could defeat Bolton on a regular basis. But they lost six of their last eight league games after he broke his leg, including four out of four away, mostly against struggling sides, and the win over QPR provided only temporary respite.

Owen Coyle's team have lost all six league matches since then, including both away trips, and it is no coincidence that Holden did not feature in any of those games.
Nor is it a great surprise that Bolton won 2-0 (note that clean sheet) when Holden returned to the side in the Carling Cup tie at Aston Villa on September 19.

In Holden's absence from Premier League away matches since the start of last season, Bolton's record now reads: won one, lost six. As well as the only win, the QPR match also brought the sole clean sheet Bolton have kept on the road since Holden was injured.

Some might excuse Bolton's poor start to the season on account of a tough fixture list (they have played both Manchester clubs, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal in their opening seven games) but a comparison of their record with and without the US international against non-big-six sides is instructive.

Since the start of last season they have won nine out of 18 and lost only two when he has been in the starting line-up for matches in that category, with an average of 1.89 points per game (marking them out as a top-eight side).

But when he has been absent their record is much worse, with two wins and six defeats out of 10 at an average of 0.8 points per game. In other words, they play like a relegation side without him and it's little surprise they are now bottom of the table. Apart from the QPR win, their only other victory without Holden in that category was in April at home to West Ham, last season's bottom club. At [3.95] they are worth backing to be relegated.

There may be another factor at work too - it is arguable that Coyle is not a good manager on the road. In 10 Premier League away games with Burnley, Coyle managed only one point and his success there - in cup and league - was founded on good form at Turf Moor.

It may be that Coyle was lucky to find Holden when he arrived at Bolton - and has now been unlucky to lose him. With no solution in sight, however, Bolton look a team to keep opposing on the road and their relegation odds may well shrink further.

Wigan and Bolton are both of uncharacteristically long losing streaks. Here's what Opta make of their attempts to turn things around at the DW Stadium this weekend...

Bolton Wanderers have allowed their opponents more shots on target against them than any other team in the Premier League (49).

78% of the goals Bolton have scored so far have been netted in the second half, the highest proportion in the Premier League.

Bolton are on a run of six straight league defeats, their joint-poorest run ever in the Premier League.

Owen Coyle's men have also lost their last six at home in the league, becoming only the fifth side to do this in the Premier League.

Wigan have lost four Premier League games in a row for the first time since October 2008.

Four of the last five Premier League games between Wigan and Bolton have ended as draws.

There have been just three goals scored in the last four meetings between Wigan and Bolton at the DW Stadium.

Lee Dixon: Impossible to make a case for Bolton

Premier League RSS / Lee Dixon / 01 October 2011 / Leave a Comment

Nicolas Anelka has a fine goalscoring record against Bolton

Nicolas Anelka has a fine goalscoring record against Bolton

"Third plays bottom and worst still for the home fans, Opta tell us that Bolton have lost the last eight Premier League games in a row at the Reebok versus Chelsea, the longest losing run of any team at home to a single opponent."

Third visits last in Sunday's first match of the day and all the stats in the world point towards a comfortable Chelsea win. We simply can't ignore them, says Lee Dixon.

Bolton v Chelsea, KO 13:30 BST, Sky Sports 1

Bolton [7.0] Chelsea [1.57] The Draw [4.4]

Bolton are in the middle of a huge slump. But you didn't need me to tell you that, did you? The league table tells you all you need to know with the Trotters rock bottom on just three points from six matches. What's gone wrong? It's hard to say because their squad doesn't look markedly weaker than it has been in recent years. While Daniel Sturridge and Johan Elmander have departed, Owen Coyle has managed to secure the likes of Gael Kakuta and David N'Gog. But the team just hasn't performed.

Chelsea, on the other hand, are showing signs of clicking into gear. Ramires is looking very lively and there's a huge amount to like about Juan Mata. He's one of those players who may not do anything exceptionally well but he does a lot of things very well and is making things happen upfront for Chelsea. We sometimes see these creative foreign players take time to settle in the Premier League but the Spaniard has done so very quickly. Chelsea will however have to make do without his compatriot Fernando Torres, who got sent off just as he was starting to show some form.

Match Odds

When faced with a heavy favourite I always try to make a case for the underdog being able to salvage something from the match before assessing whether there's enough there to actually go ahead and oppose them in the betting. On this occasion I've come up with virtually no case at all.

Third plays bottom and worst still for the home fans, Opta tell us that Bolton have lost the last eight Premier League games in a row at the Reebok versus Chelsea, the longest losing run of any team at home to a single opponent. It's also interesting to note that in Chelsea's last six matches against Bolton (both home and away) they've won all six and not conceded in the last four. That's a very telling stat and means that backing Chelsea to win to nil at 2.6 represents far better value than the straightforward win at [1.58].

Correct Score

I suspect that, if Chelsea score early, the floodgates could open here. Competition for places in the forward positions is pretty intense in Andre Villas-Boas' team at the moment and the likes of Mata, Frank Lampard, Didier Drogba, Florent Malouda, Sturridge and Nicolas Anelka will all be desperate to get on the scoresheet to try and cement their places in the team. No going 1-0 up and shutting up shop then.

3-0 is my idea of a scoreline but I'm not going to put all my eggs in one basket given my first bet of Chelsea winning to nil, so 3-1 is included as a saver.

To Score

Anelka will face one of his (many) former clubs and will be using these three matches which Torres is suspended for to try and remind the manager that while the Spaniard may be the club's pin-up boy now Anelka been at the football club for some time and has always performed when called upon. He has a fine record against Bolton too with Opta telling us that he's scored five in his last eight matches against Sunday's opponents and is a confident selection in this market.

Recommended Bets

2 pts Back Chelsea to win to nil @ [2.6]
1 pt each Back 3-0 and 3-1 to Chelsea in correct score market @ [15.0] and [14.0]
2 pts Back Nicolas Anelka to score at anytime @ [2.8]

Michael Cox's View

Andre Villas-Boas has done a good so far at Chelsea, picking up some decent results whilst overhauling the squad. Even his one defeat so far, away at Manchester United, was slightly harsh on the side's performance.

The one area of concern has been at the back, where Chelsea have leaked goals in the Premier League. Their only clean sheet so far has been away at Stoke on the opening day - in their five subsequent league games, they've conceded.

I think the problem is very specific though, rather than pointing to a lack of defensive organisation. Villas-Boas wants his side to press, which means a high defensive line and space in behind. John Terry and Branislav Ivanovic aren't great at turning and sprinting to collect a pass played behind them, and in certain matches they've clearly struggled playing so high up the pitch.

Will Bolton be able to expolit this weakness? It largely depends on who they play upfront. David Ngog started ahead of Kevin Davies at Arsenal last weekend but didn't last til half-time - he went off injured and was replaced by Davies. I think Owen Coyle might call upon Davies to lead the line - he offers a physical and aerial threat, but little pace in behind.

It's significant that Chelsea's only clean sheet so far this season was against the side who are notoriously focused upon playing long balls (Stoke) - Terry and Ivanovic will be up for a physical test. If I was Owen Coyle I'd want Ngog's pace, and if he plumps for Davies instead, I think Chelsea will be OK at the back. Davies is favourite to get the nod as we've seen and for us that means backing Chelsea to keep a clean sheet at [2.6].

Recommended bet:

Chelsea to keep a clean sheet at [2.6]

Premier League Betting: Bolton v Arsenal

Premier League RSS / Jaymes Monte / 23 April 2011 / Leave a Comment

Time is running out for mentally weak Arsenal side.

Time is running out for mentally weak Arsenal side.

"Bolton are looking to avenge their humiliating defeat at Wembley last weekend while Arsenal aim to demonstrate that they are not as spineless as they have looked in recent weeks."

Arsene Wenger's reluctance to blame his players for recent dropped points is starting to wear a little thin, anything less than three points here would surely end their title chances.

Daniel Sturridge will return to the Bolton side after being ineligible for the Wembley semi-final last weekend. Matt Taylor and Mark Davies could also return having overcome recent injuries.

Abou Diaby hobbled off in the midweek draw at Spurs and is unavailable here while Tomas Rosicky is doubtful due to illness.

Match Odds - Bolton 5.2, Arsenal 1.8, The Draw 3.9
Both teams go into this game with plenty to prove. Bolton are looking to avenge their humiliating defeat at Wembley last weekend while Arsenal aim to demonstrate that they are not as spineless as they have looked in recent weeks.

Arsene Wenger pointed to the fact that his team are unbeaten in 15 games following the midweek draw against Spurs. While that may not be enough to win you a Premier League title it is enough to put us off backing Bolton here. At the same time, however, I couldn't advise backing Arsenal on current form.

In fact this fixture looks ideal for those who like to do their betting In-play. Begin by laying Arsenal at the short [1.8], and be prepared to lay them again at shorter prices should they take a lead, or lock in a profit if they go behind. Adopting a similar approach in the Gunners' previous six games would have yielded notable profits.

Over/Under 2.5 Goals
Perhaps uncharacteristically Arsenal have struggled in front of goal more so on home soil than on their travels recently. Away from the Emirates it has been their leaky defence that has cost them points.

Eight goals scored and six conceded in their previous three games on the road are testament to that.

Bolton's defence is also likely to be particularly fragile following the five goals conceded against Stoke. With Sturridge back in the starting XI they also provide a considerably greater threat in front of goal themselves.

All pointers suggest a high scoring game and we should back Over 2.5 goals at odds of [1.75] accordingly. If you're feeling adventurous the [2.8] on Over 3.5 goals may also be worth a nibble.

Penalty Taken?
Wojciech Szczesny is undoubtedly a very talented goalkeeper and, unlike Manuel Alumnia and Lukasz Fabianski before him, the 21-year-old certainly looks to be the real deal.

However, he still looks extremely raw at what is an exceptionally young age for a goalkeeper. His shot stopping and positioning possess no concerns but his decision-making is often questionable - something that will improve with age.

This point is highlighted somewhat by the statistic that Arsenal have conceded five penalties in the ten Premier League game's that Szczesny has played. There is value at odds of [3.6] for a penalty to be taken (by either team) in this game.

To Score
The two obvious selections in this market are two of the league's in-form strikers. Robin van Persie has now scored 19 goals in his last 20 games for club and country while Daniel Strurridge has six goals in seven starts since joining Bolton on loan in January.

The Dutch striker looks a solid, if not particularly rewarding, bet at odds of [2.2] to add to his impressive tally. But considering Arsenal's leaky defence better value comes from backing Sturridge at odds of around the [3.5] mark.

Top Stat: Arsenal have conceded 10 goals in their last four Premier League away games.

Best Bet:
Back Over 2.5 goals @ [1.75]

Other Recommendation:
Back Sturridge to score @ [3.5]
