Premier League Betting: Tevez can boost City title challenge

Premier League RSS / / 22 February 2012 / Leave a Comment

Tevez on that fateful night in Munich

Tevez on that fateful night in Munich

"City need a boost to see them through to the end of the campaign – a different option in front of goal - and Carlos Tevez could well be that man."

Carlos Tevez behaved badly in the autumn and he has bridges to build with his manager, team-mates and fans, says Hannah Duncan. However, if the Argentine helps Manchester City win the Premier League then he might be forgiven...

In a month that's seen Mick McCarthy apologise for Wolves' 5-1 drubbing to local rivals West Brom (and promptly get the boot) and big figures at Liverpool frantically offering apologies following Luis Saurez's refusal to shake Patrice Evra's hand, football now has its latest sorry tale.

Trouble seems to have followed Manchester City forward Carlos Tevez around like a bad smell in recent years, with controversial comments and prima donna strops. But his unwillingness to warm-up against Bayern Munich back in September was the final straw for Tevez in restaurant-deprived Manchester - or so it seemed.

After a self-imposed five-month sabbatical, Tevez has finally issued an apology to manager Roberto Mancini and is back in training with the Premier League leaders. But will his return be a timely one in City's bid for the title or will more trouble be on the horizon for the Argentinean?

Despite untimely exits from the Champions League, FA Cup and Carling Cup, Manchester City are in a great position to put their name on some silverware this season. Mancini's side are [1.67] favourites to win the Premier League and [4.2] favourites to clinch the Europa League title.

But their formidable form has dropped somewhat since Christmas, with their free-flowing attack subdued by West Brom, Sunderland and Everton. They are still winning matches but nowhere near as convincingly as earlier in the season. Forwards Mario Balotelli, Sergio Aguero and Edin Dzeko have scored just five goals between them in the league since Christmas, netting one, two and two respectively - with two of those coming from the penalty spot.

City need a boost to see them through to the end of the campaign - a different option in front of goal - and Carlos Tevez could well be that man. He's a prolific goalscorer and a creator and, whatever has gone on in the past, and whatever might go on in the future, Mancini needs to get the best out of Tevez between now and the end of the season.

Despite not netting in the handful of games he's played this campaign, the Argentine scored 24 goals in 44 appearances last season, including six braces and a hat-trick - certainly not a bad return. If he can recapture that form when he's back to full fitness, Manchester United's title challenge could be dead in the water.

Betting on Tevez to still be at City next season may have looked a ridiculous bet a few months ago but, depending on how his return to the Etihad Stadium goes, it might not be a bad shout now. His success at City relies heavily on the bridges he can build, not only with his manager, but with team-mates and fans too.

If City are to keep a lacklustre but always dangerous Manchester United at bay in both the Premier League and Europa League, bygones may have to be bygones where Carlos Tevez is concerned.

Six Nations Round-up: Away wins boost England and Wales

General RSS / / 05 February 2012 / Leave a Comment

George North scores for Wales in Dublin

George North scores for Wales in Dublin

Round one of the Six Nations is over, so what have we learned about the sides and how should results inform next weekend's bets? Richard O'Hagan reports.

The first weekend of the RBS Six Nations was a 'getting to know you' exercise for most teams, leading to staccato performances and a pretty poor standard of play. In fact, for the three winning sides you could almost pigeonhole their victories as an object lesson in how to win without looking like you were trying to.

France and Italy kicked the 2012 tournament off in a freezing Stade de France. France's 30-12 victory was a cut above 80% of their performances in the World Cup, but far below the level of their losing appearance in the final. Italy once again proved that they can give every side in the tournament - indeed, in the world - a run for their money, but they lacked the killing touch when they came within sight of the French goal line.

Next up for the Italians will be England, who defeated Scotland 13-6 in one of the worst games the venerable old championship has ever seen. Even allowing for the cold weather you would expect a club rugby match to contain fewer than 27 handling errors, let alone two international sides. In Scotland's case those errors were very costly, as on at least five occasions they spurned clear try-scoring opportunities because of them whilst another error - Dan Parks dithering near his own goal line, led to a charged-down kick and Charlie Hodgson's opportunistic try.

England's interim coach Stuart Lancaster will fancy his chances of extending that winning run when his young charges take on the Italians. Whilst the Azzurri pack may prove troublesome, his inexperienced centre pairing of Brad Barritt and Owen Farrell should find themselves with even more room against the Italians than they did against the Scots. The two French tries scored on the breakaway will have England's speedy wingers salivating. England's odds of [1.26] don't look overly generous, but they are still a solid bet even though bet in Rome.

Scotland go to Cardiff to take on Wales. The Welsh were the better side by far in their dramatic 23-21 win over Ireland, but were almost undone by a combination of Rhys Priestland's woeful placekicking and Bradley Davies' idiotic sinbinning when they were still only a point behind. In the end, a controversial penalty by Leigh Halfpenny less than a minute from time decided the game. Awarded as it was for what looked like a perfectly legitimate tackle by Stephen Ferris. It was the best game of the weekend, but it was still decided by errors, not by great play. Still, it's sent the Dragon's title odds tumbling and Wales are now in to [2.86] second favourites in the outright winner market.

Next Sunday, they play Scotland for whom prop Euan Murray will be missing. Despite their defeat to England, the Scots could give the Welsh more than a few problems and at odds of [3.8] they might be the value bet of the round.

France v Ireland could be the game of the whole championship. Both sides will need to improve upon this weekend's showing, with Ireland needing far more inspiration behind the scrum than they showed against the Welsh. It is hard to look beyond the French though, with the speed and skill of their centres, Aurelien Rougerie and Wesley Fofana, likely to be significant against an Irish midfield that was overmatched against the Welsh. France are [1.4] to win.

Dream start for Stuart Lancaster's inexperienced team as Scotland are left to rue errors and indecisiveness once again......

Blue is certainly the colour as Betfair Ambassador Will Greenwood selects five bets for the 2012 Six Nations. Remember, our man did pretty well with these last year......

Rugby World Cup: All Black Dagg can boost try bid against Canada

RSS / Geoffrey Riddle / 01 October 2011 / Leave a Comment

Is Dagg a top try contender?

Is Dagg a top try contender?

"Kieran Read, the No 8, has returned to fitness and will start his first Rugby World Cup match."

Even without their two talismen, New Zealand's form is ominous for everyone else and they should make hay against Canada, says Geoffrey Riddle.

New Zealand v Canada, Sunday 03:30 (ITV1)

New Zealand

New Zealand have opened the scoring in their last two matches with a try.

The All Blacks have scored the first match try in eight of their last nine fixtures.

Canada

Canada have scored the first points of the match in all three of their World Cup fixtures.

They also scored the first try of the match against Japan and Tonga. The first try in their three matches has come before the 12th minute.

Canada have missed eight kicks at goal.

All four tries Canada conceded against France were scored by back three players. Vincent Clerc scored a hat-trick of tries and Damien Traille was playing at full-back.

Prop Hubert Buydens made 15 tackles against France and centre Ryan Smith made 14 in the same match. In the 25-20 victory over Tonga Jamie Cudmore made 23 tackles, Adam Kleeberger made 14 tackles and Jebb Sinclair put in 10 - almost half of the team total.

Match stats

Dan Carter and Richie McCaw were named in the starting XV but after injuries to both, they're replaced by Colin Slade and Victor Vito respectively. Kieran Read, the No 8, has returned to fitness and will start his first Rugby World Cup match.

Kieren Crowley, the Canada coach, has once again named the best side available to him. He has been forced to replace James Pritchard, the team's kicker, with Conor Trainor, due to a bang to the head. Canada have five players in their squad who will have not played a match at the tournament.

Preview

Unfortunately for the Canadians, the All Blacks are strong where they are weak. The Canucks like to impose themselves physically on teams and keep play narrow by tackling anything that moves.

Although their back row is robust, they do not create turnover ball, and if anything, leak it and as such they are prone to counter-attacks by wings and fullbacks joining the line.

Canada have been given a ray of hope after Richie McCaw and Dan Carter pulled out, which means turnover possession will be a little slower for the All Blacks and will be used a little less precisely by Colin Slade, Carter's replacement.

With New Zealand looking in ominous form ahead of the knockout stages it may be worth a small investment in Israel Dagg to be the top tournament tryscorer. Dagg, who recovered from a deep thigh bruise, has collected four tries, two behind Chris Ashton after his touchdown against Scotland. Dagg could be the prime beneficiary of Sonny Bill Williams's offloading game and New Zealand should have the easiest quarter-final against Argentina. Either that, or lay Ashton at around [3.0].

Recommended investment: (1-5pt staking plan)
2pts I Dagg top tournament tryscorer at around [5.0]

Even without their two talismen, New Zealand's form is ominous for everyone else and they should make hay against Canada, says Geoffrey Riddle....
