Home and Away: Back Fram to maintain impressive start to the new campaign

Bet 1: Fram (AWAY) @ 2.54

Bet 2: Al Ahli (HOME) @ 1.69

Jonno Turner looks at action in Iceland and Saudi Arabia as he goes in search of two more winners in his Home and Away column...

Wrap up warm - as we're off to Iceland for our first pick of the day, where Urvalsdeild bottom side IA welcome Fram to Akranes.

The hosts go into this one in miserable form, and three losses from their opening trio of league outings suggests that Pordur Pordarson's side may struggle this campaign.

But it's not just the defeats that will be ringing alarm bells down at the Akranesvollur - it's the manner in which the Skagamenn lost those games, and eight goals shipped in that time makes it clear where their problems lie.

Pordarson's side have lost their last five on the bounce including cup ties, and conceded a whopping 16 goals, which indicates that Fram are likely to be presented with a chance or two here.

The visitors line up for this clash unbeaten in the new campaign, and will be full of confidence following two wins and a draw from their last three on the road.

Porvaldur Orlygsson's charges sit seventh in the table following that start, and will be keen to get another three points on the board in order to pile the pressure on the top six.

History certainly favours the visitors, and Fram have won the last three league meetings between these two sides - including one away from the Laugardalsvollur.

Bet 1: Fram (AWAY) @ 2.54

Switching our attentions to slightly warmer climes now, as we travel to Saudia Arabia - where Al Ahli face El Jaish at the Prince Abdullah al-Faisal Stadium, looking to secure their place in the next stage of the AFC Champions League.

A 1-1 draw from the first leg of this tie certainly gives the hosts an advantage going into this clash, and Aleksandr Ilic's Al Ahli side will be keen to extend the formidable home form which has seen them lose just one from 13 on their own patch - a run which dates back to the end of December.

The Royals sit fifth in their domestic table, some 20 points off pole position, and that increases the need for them to enjoy a prosperous run in this competition.

And two home wins on the bounce ahead of this clash will have boosted confidence in Jeddah ahead of this clash.

Visitors El Jaish travel from Qatar suffering from inconsistent form - and just one win from five on their travels suggests that they may struggle in this one.

Razvan Lucescu's side would have been looking to make the most of home advantage and take a lead into this second leg, but that was not to be, and the aggregate scoreline of 1-1 leaves them on the verge of being knocked out of this competition.

The Doha side have not kept a clean sheet away from the Suhain Bin Hamad Stadium in five attempts, and I reckon that could cost them here, against an Al Ahli side full of momentum.

Bet 2: Al Ahli (HOME) @ 1.69

Torneo Final Big Match preview: Weakened Vélez will still test River's impressive home form

"Expect some early tentative prodding and probing before the game settles, and it should all open up once one team has scored."

Back Draw/River on the HT/FT @ 5.79/2

There are many games in Argentina this weekend that could be deemed important or intriguing enough to be labelled our 'big match' this week, but the defending champions visiting a potential champion just about pips it. Ed Malyon takes a look...

Vélez Sarsfield head into the city to play River Plate in a fascinating game between two of the best sides in the country right now.

River seem to permanently have one of the strongest playing squads in the league but the unique set of circumstances surrounding the club, especially the pressure or playing for such a giant, mean that things have rarely been plain-sailing for the Millionarios in recent seasons.

Having returned from their humiliating relegation to the Primera B in 2011, Matías Almeyda failed to make a talented squad into a genuine contender and left his post in late 2012.

Ramón Diaz returned to the club as manager, and 2013 has started very well for the club.

At the beginning of the weekend they are in third, and although Lanús look a tough act to catch as things stand, the meeting between the two sides later in the campaign is likely to be the championship decider one way or another.

This weekend Diaz has changed his system to a 4-4-2, and it is difficult to know how this will turn out. Leading scorer Diego 'Chino' Luna misses out again, so David Trezeguet will play up front and Rodrigo Mora will be the man charged with doing all his legwork for him. Opting for a 4-4-2 rather than the previously preferred 3-4-1-2 will give River more options in wide areas, so we might see this formation getting the best out of Trezeguet, who has started to find some goalscoring form with two goals in his last three home games.

For all River's ups and downs over the last few years, Vélez have been the very picture of stability and their sustained success on the field is doubtlessly down to the sensible way in which the club is run.

Ricardo Gareca has been given years in the job - a rare luxury on this continent - and continually evolves and regenerates his side, understanding that he must sell his players at the peak of their value in order to maintain progress.

Nonetheless, the quality of his sides rarely waver and the loan signing of Fernando Gago - exceptional for Argentina at the weekend and undoubtedly a top international midfielder - has been a coup for the Fortín.

Gareca has had to rely on youngsters to step up too, but they do so with an alarming regularity and 20-year-old full-back Gino Perruzi made a first Argentina start on Tuesday evening to continue his remarkable development after famously shackling Neymar in last year's Copa Libertadores.

The other thing that Gareca does well is invest, and the purchase of young forward Facundo Ferreyra from Banfield turned out to be inspired as his late-season rush of form turned out to be vital in them winning the Torneo Inicial in December. Probably more importantly though, Vélez can expect to sell him for around five times what they bought him for when his European suitors finally decide to stump up the cash.

This season hasn't begun so well for Vélez, with Gareca admiring that the Copa Libertadores is his priority and playing weakened sides in the league, but for games like this there is little chance of him resting players.

By that token, the side Gareca puts out is expected to be as strong as possible, although Gago (unfit) and Fabian Cubero (suspended) are both missing. They are comfortable in their 4-3-1-2 shape and up against River's tactical experiment they will be undoubtedly be the more settled side, even though River have a touch more quality.

River: Marcelo Barovero; Gabriel Mercado, Leandro González Pirez, Jonathan Bottinelli, Diego Martínez; Carlos Sánchez, Cristian Ledesma, Leonardo Ponzio, Leonel Vangioni; Rodrigo Mora, David Trezeguet.
Vélez: Sosa; Peruzzi, Sabia, Domínguez, Papa; Bella, Cerro, Romero; Insúa; Copete, Pratto.

Match odds

With Vélez having won the last three meetings between these two and River boasting just one victory in their last seven meetings, Gareca's side have the clear advantage in recent times.

River are obvious favourites at 2.3411/8 given current league position, but also because of how strong they've been at El Monumental this season. Three wins from three will give them much confidence heading into Saturday's match, and the absence of Gago, Cubero and Facundo Ferreyra from the Vélez lineup means that this price seems justified, even if you know that Gareca will always put out a competitive and hard-to-beat XI.

Goals

As touched on before, Vélez will be difficult to break down - even for River - and the central defensive partnership of Sebastián Dominguez and Juan Sabia are very solid at this level.

Four of Vélez's last 15 games have gone over 2.5 goals, but all of those have been when the Fortín were sticking a few goals past far weaker opposition, something we shouldn't expect at River.

The hosts have seen five of their last 15 go over that mark, and three in eight since Diaz took over. While the price is as short as 1.584/7 the unders are to be avoided, with half of River's 12 home games going overs since they returned to the top flight.

The value lies in the overs at 2.68/5 even though the visitors will look to stay compact.

Other bets

Expect some early tentative prodding and probing before the game settles, and it should all open up once one team has scored. On that model, Draw/River on the HT/FT market looks a tempting bet at 5.79/2 or even just the half-time draw at 2.111/10.

Lucas Pratto's physical approach could trouble River's defence - definitely the hosts' weakest area - so Both Teams to Score is also worth consideration at 2.0621/20.

Home and Away: Yeovil to extend impressive run in play-off six pointer

Bet 1: Yeovil Town (HOME) @ 2.98

Bet 2: MK Dons (AWAY) @ 2.54

Jonno Turner looks to build on a value win in Germany yesterday with two more picks - this time from League One.

We're off to Somerset for our first pick of the day - and it's a massive game in the League One play-off picture, as sixth placed Yeovil Town host fifth placed Swindon at Huish Park.

The home side have lost just one of their last 13 outings, and that will give them much confidence ahead of the final push, as they eye a final place in the top six.

Boss Gary Johnson will be delighted with his side's consistency of late - and eight wins from their last nine on their own patch puts them in pole position to take maximum points from this clash, against a Swindon side which has been wobbling in recent weeks.

The Glovers have been in lethal attacking form in recent weeks, and 21 goals scored in their last eight in front of their own fans suggests that they have more than enough quality to overcome their visitors here.

And Johnson has strengthened his squad further - bringing in Latvia international midfielder Vitalijs Maksimenko from Brighton and Charlton striker Jordan Cook - who are both expected to play a part this evening.

Swindon travel to Yeovil under a bit of a cloud, with ex-boss Paolo di Canio having walked out on the Robins, and sparking a downturn in form.

Kevin MacDonald is the new man tasked with leading the away side to success, but there is much confusion around the club at the moment - with a transfer embargo meaning that they can't bring players in - and that threatens to derail their whole season.

Just one win from five - and a 2-1 loss at Brentford in their last outing on the road - isn't the kind of return that the Robins will need to show if they are to secure their place in the play-offs.

But Swindon have slipped so much that they are now within catching distance of 10th place - and anything but a win here will put them at real risk of dropping out of the leading pack completely.

MacDonald will be without influential midfielder Alan Navarro, who is injured - and he has had to turn to the youth players to make up a full squad for this clash.

Bet 1: Yeovil Town (HOME) @ 2.98

Staying in the third tier now, as MK Dons travel to Staffordshire to face Crewe Alexandra at Gresty Road - and Karl Robinson's side will be desperate to build on an impressive 3-0 victory over Tranmere last weekend.

The Dons go into this tie sitting 12th in the table - and that will be a disappointment to them as they would have been looking to make an impact on the play-offs as a minimum this year.

But so tight is this division that a win could lift the visitors to 57 points - and with a couple of wins of the top seven, with the end of the campaign in sight.

Robinson's side have certainly hit form at the right time, and just one loss from their last seven suggests that they have a determination about them that makes them very hard to beat.

And the away side have lost just two of their last nine on the road - an enviable return at any level.

Hosts Crewe line up for this clash sitting two below their guests in 14th, and look set for mid table obscurity this season.

Steve Davis' charges are 12 points off the play-offs and 15 points off the relegation zone, which suggests that, although they have nothing to play for, they have nothing to worry about either.

And no wins from four on their own patch indicates that the Alex may struggle in this encounter, as they welcome a Dons side full of momentum.

Davis will be without teenage starlet Max Clayton, who has been called up to the England U19s squad, and will be looking for his attackers to step up to the plate tonight - having not scored more than a single goal in any of their last five home games.
