Newton Abbot Placepot: Sunday March 18

Daily Placepots RSS / / 18 March 2012 / Leave a Comment

Newton Abbot is the venue for today's placepot.

Newton Abbot is the venue for today's placepot.

"Swing Bowler has made a perfect start to her career, winning two bumpers and her hurdling debut at Ludlow, looking a useful performer in the making..."

Timeform's Matt Gardner heads to Newton Abbot for Sunday's tilt at landing the placepot...

13:45 - Medic Man showed the benefit of a step up in trip when winning at Hereford earlier this month, looking one to follow, and he appeals as the most likely winner of this contest. With Medic Man looking solid we can afford to take a bit of a flyer with She's On The Case, particularly as the market has spoken in her favour this morning. At the time of writing she is trading at [11.0] having previously been as big as [20.0] and, although there has not been all that much encouragement gleaned from her recent outings, she looks attractively handicapped and may well make the places.

14:15 - Johnny Mullen has not been at his best of late but he has been taking part in stronger races than today's and, with three places currently on offer, appeals as a solid selection. None of his rivals make any real appeal, with jumping frailties and current wellbeing a concern among a number of them, so Johnny Mullen goes in as our first banker.

14:45 - Swing Bowler has made a perfect start to her career, winning two bumpers and her hurdling debut at Ludlow, looking a useful performer in the making. She was not hard pressed on her latest start and ought to have considerably more to offer, as highlighted by the Timeform 'P' being affixed to her rating. Jump City would have been her main rival but is a non-runner, leaving the race at the mercy of Swing Bowler.

15:15 - The fourth leg looks a match between Golden Chieftain and Mr Hudson, and as we need to include the winner to progress with just four horses taking part, the safest option is to include them both.

15:45 - Accordingtoeileen won a mares' handicap at Leicester in November, looking value for more than the winning margin as she idled close home, and that's form that should see her competitive today. Her next run wasn't so good, underlining the fact that she isn't straightforward, but she may have been freshened up by the break of 109 days. Dimpsy Time made the frame in a pair of bumpers in January and was not given a hard time on her hurdling debut earlier this month. She should do better for that experience and is worth including as a second selection.

16:15 - Two non-runners have reduced the field to just four, so two are taken in the hope of a safe passage. Magic Marmalade fell on his last two starts over fences but has improved over hurdles of late and appeals as the most likely winner if putting a clean round of jumping on his return to the larger obstacles. Lupita has been contesting races that she realistically could not win and, although she is far from solid, her tumbling mark is of note and she is added as a bit of insurance.

Selections:

13:45 - 1, 9
14:15 - 1
14:45 - 12
15:15 - 1, 2
15:45 - 1, 5
16:15 - 3, 6

Timeform's Adam Brookes believes that the Gold Cup Day card is undoubtedly the trickiest of the week with regards playing the placepot, but is hoping that his recommended permutation can land what is likely to be a mammoth payout......

With three tricky handicaps to navigate the Cheltenham Placepot could pay well this afternoon as Timeform's Joe Szekeres heads to Prestbury Park to offer his permutation......

Can our first bet score over hurdles at Newton Abbot?

Can our first bet score over hurdles at Newton Abbot?

"She's On The Case has been backed dramatically into [10.0] from [25.0] in Newton Abbot’s 13:45 2m6f Handicap Chase."

Today's Follow The Money Movers come from the meetings at Newton Abbot and Carlisle.

Starting in Devon where She's On The Case has been backed dramatically into [10.0] from [25.0] in Newton Abbot's 13:45 2m6f Handicap Chase.
Grant Cann's seven-year-old mare is not the most consistent these days, but has slipped to a potentially attractive mark after some indifferent recent performances. Having run in hurdles and chases last year rated over 100 she gets in here off on just 85 and acts on all surfaces so the money behind her may be significant. A sudden return to her old form cannot be ruled out.

Later on the same card Golden Chieftain has drifted alarmingly in the betting out to [2.72] from an earlier [2.2] for the 3m2f Novice Chase at 15:15.
Colin Tizzard's 7yo has looked a fair recruit to the chasing ranks and enjoyed a bloodless victory last time at Wincanton but in truth he had little to beat that day. The form of his Ffos Las third behind Teaforthree now looks stronger after that one scored at the Cheltenham Festival but there has to be some doubt whether he can give lumps of weight away to three capable rivals, over the longest trip he has tackled so far. A lacklustre display at Warwick when never travelling is also still fresh enough in the memory and therefore at the prices he could be best opposed.

Finally up to Carlisle for their 15:30 2m4f Handicap Hurdle in which Hada Men has been strongly supported into [4.2] from [6.8]. The gelding has done well this year since switching to Brian Ellison's yard, racking up a hat-trick on the all-weather during January before shaping with promise in two novice hurdles. Having just qualified for a mark he looks an interesting contender now in handicap company and stepped up in trip, having kept on well at the end of both previous runs over hurdles. Aidan Coleman is an eye-catching booking in the saddle so this looks one to keep the right side of today.

Nick Shiambouros' Patented 80/20 Bet: Newton Abbot, 15:45

80/20 RSS / / 18 March 2012 / Leave a Comment

Can Nick pull out a winner from today's Newton Abbot card?

Today's 80/20 is Alder Mairi in the 15.45 at Newton Abbot.

This mare finished eighth to Taradrewe in a bumper at Warwick last month. She made good progress half a mile from home but failed to deliver a challenge behind the game winner. I think she has ability and could run well at a big price on her hurdles debut. At present she is trading at [23.0] on the exchange.

He hit the Gold Cup winner yesterday - can Nick lead us to more profits?...

Two years ago, when all eyes were on two famous horses at the top of the market, Nick was on the money when he backed Imperial Commander. In 2012, our man is hoping that his selection can split the favourites once again....

Nick Shiambouros' Patented 80/20 Bet: Newton Abbot, 15:15

80/20 RSS / Nick Shiambouros / 20 March 2011 / Leave a Comment

Nick Shiambouros is Devonshire-bound as he follows the fortunes of today's 80/20...

Today's 80/20 is Yvonne Evelyn in the 15:15 at Newton Abbot. This mare finished third to Naughty Naughty at Huntingdon at the end of February. She met a fair bit of interference just as she was starting to make headway on the leaders and lost valuable ground in the process.I think she has ability and should go close at a reasonable price. At present she is trading at [3.1] on the exchange.

Nick bangs the drum for today's 80/20......

Nick is expecting a commanding performance from someone today....

Nick Shiambouros aims to spin some value on Day Three of the Cheltenham Festival. Meanwhile, make sure you read tomorrow's 80/20 to see if Nick can make it two correct Gold Cup calls in a row......

Spinning Waters has been a significant mover to land the 15:05 over hurdles at Newton Abbot

Spinning Waters has been a significant mover to land the 15:05 over hurdles at Newton Abbot

"Tried handicapping for the first time after a couple of only moderate runs, the market suggests that better is forthcoming from Spinning Waters today."

All of today's Follow The Money movers come from the card at Newton Abbot.

We start today's bets with the opening race at Newton Abbot, the 14:00 class 5 maiden Hurdle where good support has been noted for Glassawine, moving from [3.15] in to [2.68]. On the face of it this looks a two-horse race with Glassawine and the solid looking favourite Alla Svelta ( carrying 8lb more than Glassawine) the only two attracting significant market interest. An encouraging run, when finishing third at Taunton last time over this distance, should have the David Pipe 4yo spot on for this and a big run is expected.

We move on to the 15:05 class 4 handicap hurdle where the market vibes are very strong for Spinning Waters who has moved from [9.8] in to [4.6], making him just about the best backed horse of the day in early trading. It may be significant to note that trainer Dai Burchell saddles two at Newton Abbot today (the other being outsider Watch Out in the 16:15) with both attracting support. Tried handicapping for the first time after a couple of only moderate runs, the market suggests that better is forthcoming from Spinning Waters today.

For the final selection and today's negative we need look no further than 11yo Round The Horn in the 16:15. A huge drifter early on going from [2.02] out to [3.0] in what looks a very competitive race for this level. Whilst clearly in excellent form of late winning his last two races, both of those however came on testing ground. In fact all of his three wins have come on ground no better than soft. With today's conditions of good to soft not expected to suit, coupled with a hike in the weights for his wins, Round The Horn may find the three-timer just out of reach today.

Recommended Bets:
Back Glassawine @ [2.68] 14:00 Newton Abbot
Back Spinning Waters @ [4.6] 15:05 Newton Abbot
Lay Round The Horn @ [3.0] 16:15 Newton Abbot
