Exeter Placepot: Tuesday March 6

Exeter is the venue for Tuesday's Placepot

Exeter is the venue for Tuesday's Placepot

"Josh's Dreamway has to be respected on her handicap debut, as while she hasn't achieved much over hurdles so far, she has shaped better than the results, showed ability in bumpers and has been given what looks a relatively fair mark."

Timeform's Joe Szekeres heads to Exeter this afternoon for his placepot permutation...

14:30 - Florafern heads the Timeform ratings for the opening contest on the Exeter card and definitely looks the one to beat, having achieved a level of form in advance of all of her rivals. However, she doesn't strike as the most consistent type, so we're also going to include Sapphire Rouge, who brings an element of dependability to the table.

15:00 - Josh's Dreamway has to be respected on her handicap debut, as while she hasn't achieved much over hurdles so far, she has shaped better than the results, showed ability in bumpers and has been given what looks a relatively fair mark. It looks as though handicaps have always been the plan with her and she's expected to improveme this afternoon.

15:30 - Question marks over a lot of the runners in the third, but we can rely on Mortimers Cross as our main selection after his impressive win at Fontwell last time. Mortimers Cross jumped with great aplomb and responded well to pressure in the closing stages on that occasion, two attributes that should hold him in good stead here. He isn't quite the banker people may be expecting, however, and we also take Flying Award, who looks open to progress after just two starts over fences.

16:00 - Bounds And Leaps is currently a Timeform Horse in Focus having caught the eye in recent starts. He won on his chase debut before falling last time, when well fancied to win at Ascot, and he should be capable of going very close this afternoon. Gotoyourplay looks a worthy insurance selection, should Bound And Leaps fail to fire, the Andy Turnell-trained gelding open to progress after just three starts over fences.

16:30 - Likeable Rogue looks the type to improve for well-respected connections after a promising debut and is the second banker of the afternoon. Paul Nicholls' six-year-old lasted longest on the bridle before being narrowly touched off first time up, and that performance should prove a solid foundation on which he can build.

17:00 - Only Hope is an obvious inclusion in the final race given that he currently tops the Timeform ratings and has proved himself a consistent individual throughout the winter. We're also going to include Roxanne Bruere to be on the safe side, that one having run to the same figure on all three of her latest outings over timber.

Selections
14:30 - 1, 4
15:00 - 10
15:30 - 6, 8
16:00 - 2, 10

Timeform Radio Racing Tips: Mortimers Cross to hit the spot at Exeter

Timeform Radio Tip RSS / / 06 March 2012 / Leave a Comment

Three bets, two races, at Exeter (above)

Three bets, two races, at Exeter (above)

"Mortimers Cross is in the form of his life and looks sure to be suited by this step up in trip... "

David Cleary heads to Devon as he selects three runners from two Tuesday afternoon races...

Exeter provides the pick of this afternoon's action, with some pretty fair racing for the Tuesday before Cheltenham.

The feature is the Devon National at 15:30 which sees several regulars in marathon events at the track line up, including last year's winner Ammunition and third Drybrook Bedouin. They're sure to be popular but the value may lie elsewhere, with Mortimers Cross and How's My Friend the pair to focus on. Mortimers Cross is in the form of his life and looks sure to be suited by this step up in trip; he'll make a bold bid from the front. How's My Friend is likely to be much more patiently ridden. He has yet to win a race but has promised better on quite a few occasions this season and seems likely to show his true colours now he steps up to a marathon distance - his pedigree is chock full of stamina.

Another runner at Exeter that has yet to show to full advantage over jumps is Josh's Dreamway in the handicap hurdle at 15:00. She has had the required three runs for a mark, all on much softer ground than she'll meet this afternoon. Her bumper form bears close scrutiny and makes her look on a very attractive initial mark.

Recommended Bets
Back Mortimers Cross @ [11.0] in the 15:30 at Exeter
Back How's My Friend @ [10.0] in the 15:30 @ Exeter

Back Josh's Dreamway @ [6.0] in the 15:00 at Exeter

Exeter Placepot: Tuesday May 3

Ordinary fare at Exeter this evening - but there's always a placepot to be won.

Ordinary fare at Exeter this evening - but there's always a placepot to be won.

Anaya has the best form to her name in the opening maiden hurdle, but it's hardly a demanding standard that she sets, and the feeling is that Taroum has the scope to progress past her with this shorter trip sure to prove in his favour.

Exeter makes marginally more appeal than Catterick for this evening's placepot attempt on account of it being a jumps meeting.

17:50 - Anaya has the best form to her name in the opening maiden hurdle, but it's hardly a demanding standard that she sets, and the feeling is that Taroum has the scope to progress past her with this shorter trip sure to prove in his favour. There's no need to take the ungenuine Ladies Best as well with Taroum more than likely to get us through by himself.

18:20 - Rolanta's recent winning form amounts to little in the context of this race, and the last-time placed efforts of Cubism and Kasban have a lot more depth to them. There's a feeling that the first-named is better suited by sharper tracks than this, however, so we'll plump for Kasban alongside Barnhill Brownie, who may be temperamental but is at least having his sights lowered markedly.

18:50 - It's not easy to be confident about any of the sextet who line up for the handicap chase which follows, with Beherayn and Bushwacker generally vulnerable on account of temperament and jumping respectively. Both posted sound enough efforts last time, however, and it would be a surprise if one of the pair didn't finish in the first two.

19:20 - Conversely, we need the winner to the fourth leg with just the four runners, and it's best to take a chance on the well-being of Marigolds Way. She bled from the nose when stopping with alarming alacrity at Wincanton in March, but if she's none the worse has the best claims over a trip she should stay.

19:50 - Not much in the way of established hunter form in the next, and even the point form on offer doesn't looks anything out of the ordinary. Arbour Hill and Global Party at least arrive on the back of wins, and even if the ins and outs of those successes are nothing to write home about - particularly in the case of the latter - it should be enough to see at least one hit the placings.

20:20 - None of the newcomers in the bumper make any obvious appeal on paper, so it's a race best left to dual winner Bahira, with a replication of her previous form more than likely to prove enough to see her score once again.

The praise for the brilliant Frankel has rightfully been flowing from all quarters the last couple of days and there's nothing I can add, but I enjoyed it. Anyway, it's quickly back to reality with Monday's placepot from Chepstow......

Staggering scenes on the Rowley Mile yesterday and while we're unlikely to see anything similar today, quality action still abounds and placepot payouts could well be bountiful......

The dividend at Newmarket on 2000 Guineas day last year was a whopping £1,885.10, which is incentive enough to have a crack today, for all the HQ card looks difficult to navigate, though the strategy is going to have to be small stakes and plenty of lines......

Exeter Races

Exeter Races

"Vamizi ran well when second in the Devon National over this course and distance last time out and a repeat of that run should be enough to see him hit the places."

Timeform's Phil Thompson makes the selections for today's placepot at Exeter...

14:30 - We start with a novice hurdle and we will take Lundy Sky to get us off to a flyer. The selection was impressive when making all a similar event here last time over course and distance and is expected to go close here under identical conditions, the way open for him now that Handy Andy is a non-runner.

15:00 - A trappy handicap here with questions marks over most of them, so we will take two against the field. Sir Kezbaah has posted some very solid efforts this season, most notably when chasing home the smart Salden Licht over an inadequate 2m1f here in January. He's suited by this sort of test and a reproduction of his last run when fourth to Golden Chieftain will see him go close. Sum Laff is the least exposed member of the line-up after having only three starts under Rules. He still looked green when winning at Fontwell last time and could be open to further improvement now granted a stiffer test.

15:30 - Even on good ground, this race promises to be a war of attrition; racing for nearly four miles and over 21 fences around Exeter on a Tuesday afternoon is fraught with danger and so we would be foolish to put all our eggs in one basket and gamble here. Vamizi ran well when second in the Devon National over this course and distance last time out and a repeat of that run should be enough to see him hit the places. Martha's Kinsman is one of three 12-year olds in the line-up and has been contesting hunter chases as of late. However, he has proven stamina over such extreme distances (won over 4m 1f at Cheltenham in October) and Richard Johnson who has won him twice is back taking over from an amateur.

16:00 - Hidden Keel is likely to be a short-priced favourite on the back of an impressive win here last time. That was only 14 days ago, though, and he did have things his own way that day, facing a tougher task now he has to give weight to some useful types here, so we shall oppose him. Requin was impressive when landing a handicap at Chepstow last time and is a previous course winner here, he's a sound jumper and is open to further improvement, as is Rougham who has shown himself to be a useful novice chaser this season and jumped boldly when winning at Ascot in January. He can be forgiven his run at Cheltenham last time when he found the competition too hot and he should provide us with a good chance of hitting the places.

16:30 - The hunter chase has long been the nemesis of a good placepot and this one looks no different on paper. However, this particular race does not have as much strength in depth as first appears and we will take a chance on Blackstaff to make the three. Blackstaff has won his last three point outings impressively with today's jockey on board and whilst lacking the experience of some of his rivals, both trip and ground look suitable for him.

17:00 It's usually a case of no heroics when it comes to the last leg, but, in this instance, we should be on pretty safe ground banking on Harry Le Fise Lake in the bumper. The selection acquitted himself well on his debut when second at Wincanton. He should have learnt from that experience and is taken to go one-better.

Selections: 8 lines

14:30 - 2
15:00 - 5, 10
15:30 - 4, 14
16:00 - 2, 3
16:30 - 2
17:00 - 3

Folkestone is the scene of today's Placepot attempt......

Yesterday's placepot at Doncaster paid over 19 grand, and by my reckoning today's card is more difficult if anything. Hopefully today's rewards will be similar should we be lucky enough to make it through all six legs......

Finally the Flat turf season really starts, and we've got some big fields at Doncaster to get our teeth into for the placepot......
