Cash Out: Anfield victims Tottenham still turn a profit

"Walker's folly may have gifted Stewart Downing the equaliser but punters already nervous of the red tide could have received a present of their own."

Do You...Don't You? Cash Out is the unique Betfair tool that allows you to lock in a profit or minimise losses regardless of the final result. Christian Crowther reviews where the optimum Cash Out profits were to be had from the weekend's Premier League action...

Tottenham's long unbeaten run of 12 Premier League games looked in little danger of ending at Anfield after Jan Vertonghen's second goal of the game put Spurs 2-1 ahead in the 53rd minute.

In truth, Tottenham deserved their lead. The visitors, having responded well to Luis Suarez's beautifully crafted opener by going on to dominate the latter stages of the first half and the opening minutes of the second, collected their reward of goals either side of the oranges.

It's now 22 Premier League strikes for Suarez, who moves three clear of Robin van Persie at the top of the charts and is rated at 1.645/8 to stay there until May.

However, Liverpool's recent league form, in which they'd handed out a 5-0 and 4-0 thumping to first Swansea and then Wigan, suggested ample scope for a Reds revival with plenty of time on the clock. And so it transpired, albeit with the aid of some dubious Tottenham defending it must be said.

In particular, Spurs' right back Kyle Walker would not have enjoyed seeing his backpass on Match of the Day 2, if he'd even bothered to tune in.

Walker's folly may have gifted Stewart Downing the equaliser but punters already nervous of the red tide could have received a present of their own.

If backers of the Tottenham win had chosen to Cash Out in the minutes before Liverpool drew level then they could have locked in a profit of £42.74.

Although the game wasn't televised, followers of Stoke's demise at Newcastle could have revelled in a post lead-taking Cash Out.

Had they been quick enough to spot that Jonathan Walters' 67th-minute opener would only serve to provoke the Geordies' third straight home league comeback, then the ensuing five minutes of positive Cash Out - before Yohan Cabaye's equaliser - saw a weekend high peak of £62.96.

The below table details which teams have been ripest for in-play pilfering in the Premier League this season...

Two And A Half Goals: Entertainment guaranteed at Anfield

Two And A Half Goals RSS / / 17 March 2012 / Leave a Comment

Can Stoke really score against Liverpool's back four where Jose Reina shines?

Can Stoke really score against Liverpool's back four where Jose Reina shines?

"With both Stoke and Liverpool set to go on the offensive, everything here points to goals."

The Inside Man picks four under/over 2.5 goals from this weekend's European offerings and he fancies an end-to-end affair when Stoke go to Liverpool

Saturday
Everton v Sunderland
Everton showed their intentions for this match by resting half a dozen players for their recent game at Liverpool. Certainly manager David Moyes will be desperate for a trophy, just something tangible to show for what have so far been 10 barren seasons at the club.

If Everton are to win this game though, they'll have to do it the hard way. Despite home games in each of the last three rounds, the Toffees failed each time to score more than twice, even against the likes of Tamworth.

Sunderland have been equally gritty during their cup run. Again, a lack of scoring on their behalf has seen three of their four games go under two and a half goals. It's also fair to say Martin O'Neill will have made this competition his priority.

Only goal difference separates these sides in the league. Both have stubborn defences, high work rate, yet a lack of creativity, meaning that this should be a classic ding-dong cup-tie that's high on effort but low on end-product.

Birmingham v Middlesbrough
Following a season of European adventure, the fixture list's become hectic for Birmingham of late. Backlogged domestic matches have left boss Chris Hughton with the difficult challenge of scrapping for a play-off place, with just three or four days rest between games.

The result's been like watching a tiring middle-distance runner try to sprint the last 200 metres. There's been lots of rocking and rolling, and all recognisable form has gone out the window. Consequently, what would have been considered banker points have been dropped. But also the goal count has risen, with 17 goals in Brum's last five games having seen four of those matches go over the goals mark.

Luckily for us, Middlesbrough are the perfect team to take advantage of those loosening purse strings. Their last six away fixtures have all gone over two and a half goals, as Tony Mowbray's men have thrown the kitchen sink at games in a late bid for an automatic promotion spot. Twenty-four goals in those six matches says it all. Expect that run to continue here.

Sunday
Liverpool v Stoke

Liverpool have admitted that securing a Champions League spot is going to be incredibly tough, and so what better way for Kenny Dalglish to cheer fans and owners alike than by delivering a Cup-double.

If they are to win it, then expect them to do it some style. Liverpool's home form in the league may have been stagnant and awkward, but it's been a different story in the Cup. Combining both Carling and FA Cup action, eight of the Merseysiders' 10 games so far were high on goals. And of the home fixtures involved, all four went high, at a stunning average of five goals per game.

Among those results was a 2-1 Carling Cup win at Stoke. With Stoke having scored twice in each of the previous three rounds, all of which were away from home by the way, the signs are that Tony Pulis has adopted a more adventurous approach for the Cup. So with both sides set to go on the offensive, everything here points to goals.

Mallorca v Atletico Madrid
Following their midweek success in the Europa League, expect Atletico Madrid to ease back into their usual pattern of domestic play, which on their travels means being negative.

In 13 away games in Spain, Atletico have scored just 12 times. Focus seems to fall on defence, which as a result has seen them draw five of those 13. The approach is consistent, and the results evident, with five of Madrid's last six road games having gone under two and a half goals.

This could make for an awkward game against a Mallorca side who've also often failed to trouble the scoreboard operators. Just 16 goals in 13 matches at the Iberostar Stadium would normally constitute relegation form. But the Islanders can also boast a well-organised defence, with just 12 goals conceded at home explaining how Joaquin Caparros's side lie a reasonably comfortable six points clear of the drop zone.

With neither side desperate for the win, and Atletico's thoughts firmly on the Europa League, a repeat of their 1-1 draw from earlier this season looks a strong possibility.

Lee Dixon: A point apiece at Anfield

Premier League RSS / / 06 February 2012 / Leave a Comment

Danger man. Gareth Bale needs to be monitored closely.

Danger man. Gareth Bale needs to be monitored closely.

"They’ve (Liverpool) beaten the big guns in both Cup competitions as well as in the league, yet found it hard to beat the seemingly easier teams, more often than not, at home."

Spurs are the better side at the moment but home advantage should provide a good leveller again and the smart money is on a result that would please both managers. A draw it is, says Lee Dixon.

Before a ball had been kicked in anger, many were predicting that it would be Liverpool who would improve significantly on last year's finish (sixth) and that Spurs would probably finish in a very similar position to last year's fifth. But here we are, almost exactly two thirds into the season and it's Tottenham who have made all the progress, sitting pretty in third, not yet out of the title race and looking good for a Champions League place at the very least. As for Liverpool, they've had a strange sort of season. Steven Gerrard has been out injured for most of it; they lost the grossly under-rated Lucas to injury; Andy Carroll has spent most of the time on the bench; and other big money signings like Charlie Adam and Jordan Henderson are yet to find their best form. They've beaten the big guns in both Cup competitions as well as in the league, yet found it hard to beat the seemingly easier teams, more often than not, at home.

A win here for either side would be a huge boost, no doubt about that.

Match Odds

One of the keys to this match will be how much Gareth Bale sees of the ball. If he receives it in space and has a chance to run at defenders at pace, Liverpool could be in all sorts of trouble. Goals, crosses, cards, penalties, they all come into the equation. Bale is often accused of not performing often enough: looking brilliant one day and mediocre the next. But every time I've seen him play live this season he's been very impressive. Not quite good enough to have got my vote for Player Of The Season - the Betfair market has got that one right with David Silva very much the front-runner - but pretty good nonetheless.

This is a really tough match to call. A case could be made for Liverpool given that they were excellent away at Wolves in midweek and very professional in knocking Manchester United out of the FA Cup the weekend before last. The fact that they're one of only two sides who are unbeaten at home in the league seems to suggest they're very unlikely to get beat here.

As for Spurs, well I've touched already on the fact that they've been much the better team this campaign and got a monkey off their backs when a comfortable 2-0 win at Anfield last season ended a run of 16 Premier League away games at Liverpool without a victory (Opta). They've also lost just twice in their last ten away matches so the stats support the premise that losing here would be going against the grain.

We profited from backing the draw in Chelsea v Manchester United because we felt that the away side was the better team but that home advantage would provide a good leveller for Chelsea. I'm not sure many would have imagined the match would have panned out the way it did but the reasoning behind the bet was right and we should take the same approach again here. Back the stalemate at [3.55].

Over/Under 2.5 Goals

One of the ongoing debates this season has been around what Liverpool's best XI is. Glen Johnson, Daniel Agger, Martin Skrtel and Jose Enrique would be my defenders. Lucas has been sorely missed because Liverpool don't really have anyone with those exact same characteristics in their squad but Steven Gerrard's return gives them some proper steel in the heart of midfield. I like Craig Bellamy out wide and even though he's been a little inconsistent, I think Charlie Adam's range of passing makes him an automatic choice, too. Luis Suarez is their best attacking player and his return from suspension is massive to Liverpool. But beyond that it's hard to say who should play and where and perhaps therein lies one of Liverpool's problems.

I think they'll go 4-4-2 here tonight and I'm not expecting a repeat of yesterday with the floodgates opening in terms of goals. Spurs' defence is somewhat under-rated and they don't concede many themselves so unders is quite a confident selection at [1.99]. Those who are already on the draw may not want to double up on 1-1 at [7.8] but that would be my idea of the most likely scoreline.

First Goalscorer

Only Kenny Dalglish knows whether he intends to hand Luis Suarez a start tonight. But whether he does or doesn't, I think Andy Carroll may well keep his place in the team. In truth he hasn't made the best of his chance whilst the Uruguyan has been out suspended but he did score away at Wolves and that may have just been the goal he needed to get his confidence back. It's not my strongest bet of the night but if he does start, a quote of [10.0] about him may look pretty big once the game is under way.

2 pts Back the draw at [3.55]
2 pts Back under 2.5 goals @ [1.98]
1 pt Back 1-1 at [7.8]
1 pt Back Andy Carroll to be first goalscorer at [10.0]

They may have taken just a point, but it was the manner of Manchester United's comeback that should warn Man City that the title race is still wide open. Ralph Ellis reviews the weekend action....
