Society Rock: Underestimated in the Sprint Cup?

Society Rock: Underestimated in the Sprint Cup?

"...it’s a race that could well produce a result in placepot terms, so we’ll look a bit further down the list and take Society Rock...and Elzaam."

It's a tremendously competitive day's racing at Haydock which can only mean a big placepot dividend...

14:00 - Rainfall looks one who'll either win or blow out, so she is one to discount from placepot calculations even if she does have the best form, her dismal reappearance at Goodwood when last seen in May meaning she looks a pretty dodgy favourite, The two with the next best form are King Torus and First City, both of whom seem more likely to give their running. The former patently needed his reappearance at York last month, while the latter has been overachieving in better company than this all season long.

14:30 - Zuider Zee has had only three runs over today's mile-and-three-quarter trip and the feeling is that none of them have got to the bottom of him. If he gets a smoother run today he'll probably improve for the trip, and he looks well handicapped in any case off the same mark as when a good second at Ascot last time. It's also worth taking Blissful Moment, who found a stop-start gallop against him more than most in the Ebor. His two previous seconds at Ascot this year are both strong pieces of form. At a bigger price there's definitely a case to be made for Nave, who is on a fair mark and was back to form in a race that wasn't run to suit him at Newmarket last weekend.

15:00 - Zero Money should have the speed to be effective over five furlongs and hasn't been harshly treated in going up 6 lb for demolishing his rivals at Newmarket last time. He is one of several front runners in this, and bearing in mind the pace didn't really hold up on the sprint course here yesterday, it's definitely worth including something that will be waited with. Secret Millionaire probably fits that billing and the fact that he's very well handicapped on the form he was showing this time last year and has Hughes in the saddle for the first time are further positives.

15:35 - The front three in the market for the Sprint Cup all ran below form last time, admittedly with excuses in some instances. That's to say, it's a race that could well produce a result in placepot terms, so we'll look a bit further down the list and take Society Rock, who backed up his Golden Jubilee run with a creditable second at Deauville last time, and Elzaam, who I'm sure has a bigger performance in him.

16:05 - Nimiety did well to go up only 2 lb for her close third in a Newmarket nursery last month. She went freely in the lead that day, so the step back to six furlongs here shouldn't be against her. The rest look a pretty dicey bunch and it might be worth taking a chance on the well-being of Sanad. He had an excuse on his nursery debut last time and his maiden win is one of the better pieces of form on offer here.

16:40 - The Leicester maiden Stipulate won on his debut last month looks better now than it did at the time, with three next-time winners emerging from the race. What's more, Stipulate was clearly green that day and shaped as if more superior to his rivals than the narrow margin of victory portrayed. He's open to above-average improvement, and should win today.
