Mark Tompkins: Going for consecutive Cumberland Plate wins
"Kathleen Frances tanked through a competitive handicap at York last time, probably doing a shade too much if anything, and it’s a matter of time before she takes advantage of what is almost certainly a fair mark."
Ultra-competitive midweek fare at Carlisle today, and that's where we're headed for the placepot...
14:00 - There isn't anything with outstanding form claims among those with experience in the opening maiden and of them, it's probably Pen Bal Crag who is marginally the best option, given that he looks open to a bit of improvement after finishing third to an impressive newcomer of Kevin Ryan's at York earlier in the month. Of the rest, it's probably worth taking a chance on Flirty Gerty, who went with more promise than the distance beaten suggests when making the running in a six-furlong maiden here a fortnight ago. The drop to five furlongs is a positive as is the good form of Tom Dascombe's yard.
14:30 - Unlike the first, this one is easy. Bedlam showed up well in a an above-average maiden on her debut at York, running to a level of form good enough to be right on the premises in a race like this. The York form is backed up a by a solid timefigure and with further improvement likely Bedlam looks as good a banker as there is on the card.
15:00 - Quite Sparky is a solid starting point in this first of three big-field handicaps that form the 'meat' of the card. Like many who have gone before him, he improved straight away once joining David O'Meara, winning a handicap at Thirsk last month and following that up with a good run over a barely adequate seven furlongs at York. There isn't exactly an abundance of front runners in the field, but the chances are they'll go quickly anyway and that will hopefully play to the strengths of Moheebb, who has loads course-and-distance form and is perhaps worth forgiving a lesser effort at York last time.
15:35 - Pravda Street has been rejuvenated since joining Brian Ellison and is a very worthy favourite for the Carlisle Bell under a 6lb-penalty for his easy win at Ayr on Friday night. Like Pravda Street, Take It To The Max has been resurgent since moving to a top Northern yard and he's worth including as well, partly to cover all bases tactically given that he comes from the lowest stall while Pravda Street is drawn highest of all.
16:10 - Single-year trends suggest you should be looking for 78-rated, Mark Tompkins-trained, four-year-old fillies in the Cumberland Plate, and happily there's only one qualifier this year. Kathleen Frances tanked through a competitive handicap at York last time, probably doing a shade too much if anything, and it's a matter of time before she takes advantage of what is almost certainly a fair mark. We've only got three places to play with now, so there's room for a second selection. Step forward Rock The Stars, who won a 10-furlong handicap at Sandown on his penultimate start in the style of a horse that will relish the extra furlong and a half today.
16:40 - Last week's course-and-distance event in which Fairlie Dinkum finished second and No Poppy finished fourth looks the key piece of form for leg six. The former is weighted to confirm the form, but she's a bit quirky and the latter did come from a marginally worse position that day, so it's probably no bad thing to include them both.
