Three Against The Field
/ Dan Geraghty / 04 May 2011 / Leave a Comment Is Martin Kaymer set to return to winning ways this weekend?
"When he's in contention, Kaymer is incredibly hard to beat."
Dan Geraghty selects a trio of players who he believes could be in contention in Charlotte this weekend. Meanwhile, watch out for Rory as his post-Augusta rehabilitation continues...
Martin Kaymer is starting this event as short as [19.0] but he's something of a forgotten man. Kaymer is a winning machine and should probably be close to single figures wherever he turns up. The reason he's some way behind Mickelson and McIlroy in the betting this week is principally a missed cut at the Masters. However, that missed cut wasn't a huge surprise; it's been well documented that Martin's low ball flight doesn't suit Augusta and this year he tried to alter his game for the Masters (something he now regrets) with disappointing results. This is the scene of Kaymer's first impressive performance in America (2009's 11th place finish) and I'd expect him to improve upon that this week. When he's in contention, Kaymer is incredibly hard to beat.
My old friend Bubba Watson [30.0] won last week's Zurich Classic on the bridle. He was keen to stress that the course didn't suit and he wasn't expecting great things yet he still emerged victorious. This week's course should suit much better and he already has a second placed finish here to his name (2009). These days Bubba is a different animal, at this current moment he is the hottest player in America, he has two wins to his name already this season and reached the semi finals of February's Accenture Matchplay. He finds himself in a star three ball on Thursday morning with Rory Mcilroy and Jim Furyk and these days Bubba is as big a draw as anyone on tour.
While Rory McIlroy was stealing the show last year, Rickie Fowler [42.0] was quietly following in his footsteps, shooting a final round 67 to move into sixth place on his own. That was his first appearance here and will surely stand him in good stead this week. Fowler watched best friend Bubba Watson win his third title last week and that may well inspire him to notch his own very soon. After an excellent debut here last year, and Bubba's win last week, I feel [42.0] is too big a price to turn down and Rickie is worth his inclusion.
Dangers: Rory McIlroy [16.0] gained his first win on American soil in stunning style last year and all eyes will be on boy wonder as he try's to put his Masters disappointment behind him. However, it may be a while before we see the best of Rory again. Phil Mickelson [13.0] thought he had this tournament won last year before McIlroy swept all aside and he will surely be a danger once more. Dustin Johnson [26.0] kick started his season with a fine top five finish in South Korea last week and he will be a popular pick here.
