"Chilli Green stands out as one of the most progressive horses seen on the all-weather this winter, but she might end up closer to a strong pace than ideal, so instead we’re going to look for hold-up performers"

Sunbury-on-Thames is the venue for Sunday's placepot...

13:50 - Modest horses and little obvious pace make this a dicey opener, but there are a handful of runners that are in some sort of form, including Valentino Swing (scythed through the field when third over C&D last time) and Jemimaville (finished strongly here last time/not had many tries at seven furlongs). Like I said, it is dicey, so we'll attack it three-handed with Bold Diva, who shaped as if better for her strong-travelling reappearance here earlier in the month.

14:20 - This is a stiffer task for Chevise at the weights than the market suggests, but she was quite impressive when beating her most obvious rival today Captain Dimitrios in a handicap at Lingfield last time, and should prove capable of upholding the form despite 3 lb worse terms.

14:50 - Much like the opener, it's difficult to see where the pace is going to come from in this handicap. The obvious one is Aather who is on a good mark if he can translate his fairly useful hurdles form back to the Flat. He hasn't proved the easiest to win with though, and he's going to be dropped out too, so there's no harm in taking some insurance. That comes in the shape of Where's Susie, who might not be among the best treated of the runners, but is thoroughly reliable and might find herself better positioned than most.

15:20 - Gandalf hasn't won since landing a course-and-distance event in September 2009, but he's gone with much more encouragement the last twice and is handicapped to strike. Private Equity hasn't always settled over shorter, which doesn't bode particularly well for her chances of staying two miles, but even then she's among the more solid ones here and the booking of Joe Fanning (in the plate for both career wins/takes over from inexperienced claimer) is a positive.

15:55 - This a more-than-decent handicap for the money, and quite unlike the ones that precede it on the card, a strong gallop looks assured. Chilli Green stands out as one of the most progressive horses seen on the all-weather this winter, but she might end up closer to a strong pace than ideal, so instead we're going to look for hold-up performers. Step forward Kempton specialist Highly Regal (chucked in on old form/much more encouragement last time) and Lockantanks (unexposed over a mile/tanked through in rear when winning last time).

16:25 - A horrendous-looking fillies' maiden to end placepot proceedings. It wouldn't be much of a surprise to see it go to a newcomer, Faith And Hope and Red Copper being the two most interesting ones in that regard, but we're going to go with experience instead and take Roman Flame, who sets the standard, and the well-bred Snowy Peak, for whom a steadily run race was no good at Lingfield last month.

Selections: 48 lines

13:50 - 4, 6, 10
14:20 - 1
14:50 - 2, 4
15:20 - 4, 8
15:55 - 8, 9
16:25 - 6, 8

Sunbury-on-Thames is the venue for Sunday's placepot......

Ascot's Betfair-sponsored card looks a good place to have a stab at the placepot today as it could prove trickier to solve than at first glance, with the usual puzzle of competitive handicaps supplemented by some graded events in which there are less than three places up for grabs....

After two consecutive returns at Scottish tracks, we turn our attention to Newbury, for a card we had initially shunned for Placepot purposes when it was due to take place last Saturday....
