"Total Rebellion is stepping up in trip but he shapes as if that will suit him."

The standard of racing isn't high today but winners are winners and these are David Cleary's Sunday selections for you to consider...

It's fair to say quality is in very short supply at this afternoon's two jumps meetings in Britain, Sedgefield and Huntingdon (where the prospect of rain throughout the day complicates matters). The handicaps in particular cater for low-grade horses and quite a few of the races have far more negatives than positives about the runners.

That is certainly true of most in Sedgefield's staying hurdle at 15.20. The exception is Total Rebellion, who was making his handicap debut when winning at Ayr last time. That was his best effort by a long way, with the fitting of blinkers and forcing tactics seemingly making the difference. Similar tactics are likely to be applied today and could have most of his rivals in trouble a fair way out. Total Rebellion is stepping up in trip but he shapes as if that will suit him.

The handicap chase which follows at 15.50 is a shocker, with negatives about virtually all the runners. Shannagarry has certainly got little to recommend him on his efforts over hurdles but he had ability in bumpers and is bred to be a better jumper than he's so far shown. His trainer George Charlton was badly out of form when he was last seen but his horses are generally going a fair bit better at the moment, even if a winner is proving elusive. He's very much a speculative selection, but Shannagarry could well spring a surprise if he takes to fences first time.
