Brian Hughes: Partners Priceless Art
"...the form of the Alan Swinbank yard coupled with the fact that he’s won four of his six bumper starts makes Priceless Art a sound back proposition."
With Exeter's quality card failing to beat the frost, today's three SmartPlays all come in "Jumpers' Bumpers" at Southwell...
Tornado Bob is the best of the runners in the 14:45 over hurdles but the three-time winner looks prime lay material this afternoon. Tornado Bob has failed to complete in three of his last four starts (once over hurdles and twice over fences) and, though he'll clearly appreciate the lack of obstacles this afternoon, he was also a short-priced/below-par fifth at Uttoxeter on his penultimate start. Donald McCain's seven-year-old shaped as if amiss last time and, while connections may be using today's race as a confidence booster, he has to be taken on at present.
The 15:20 looks the best race on the card in terms of quality and Priceless Art makes plenty of appeal. Priceless Art is a three-time course winner (two bumpers in December 2010 and a Flat maiden two months ago) who has also landed a two hurdle races from his last three outings, so clearly arrives at the top of his game. While Abergavenny, Taikoo and Bedouin Bay (all-weather) all may have higher Timeform master ratings than Priceless, the form of the Alan Swinbank yard coupled with the fact that he's won four of his six bumper starts makes Priceless Art a sound back proposition.
Horses having their first run for Brian Ellison are often worth following and eleven-year-old Sound Accord fits the bill in the closing race at 16:25. A dual chase winner in 2008/9 who also finished a respectable sixth in Fontwell's Southern National a season later, Sound Accord showed the first signs of life for a while with cheekpieces and a tongie tie applied for the first time when third in a handicap chase at Chepstown last time, his final start for Alex Hales. One of only two Rules winners in today's six-runner race, Sound Accord (who won two of his trio of bumper outings in 2006) can score despite his
advancing years.
