Workforce: Worth backing to atone for his defeat in last year's King George

Workforce: Worth backing to atone for his defeat in last year's King George

"Workforce was disappointing in this last year but has done absolutely nothing wrong since and, given the chance to tackle a mile and a half again, could have just too much for both Rewilding and St Nicholas Abbey."

Debussy improved again last year for John Gosden, the highlight being his victory in the Arlington Million. He has been below form for his new yard this season and is running here in order to guarantee a good pace for Rewilding.

Rewilding's defeat of So You Think over a mile and a quarter in the Prince of Wales's Stakes here last month confirmed he's a top-class colt and the step back up to a mile and a half can only be in his favour. He acts on soft ground and has the form to run Workforce close.

St Nicholas Abbey looked a potential star when winning the Racing Post Trophy as a two-year-old and is finally starting to show that spark again, winning the Ormonde Stakes and the Coronation Cup, in the latter beating Midday despite not getting the run of the race. He may well have more to offer.

Workforce won the Derby and Arc in 2010 and did well to make a winning reappearance in the Brigadier Gerard at Sandown. He ran another fine race when second in the Eclipse over the same course and distance and this return to a mile and a half is a big plus.

Nathaniel has had just five races in his career and is still progress, finishing second to the Irish Derby winner Treasure Beach in the Chester Vase before winning the King Edward VII Stakes over this course and distance. He is effective on soft ground and could well have more to give.

Timeform 1-2-3:
1. Workforce
2. Rewilding
3. St Nicholas Abbey

Timeform View: A trio of proven top-class middle-distance colts take each other on and there's perhaps another lurking in the shape of Nathaniel. Workforce was disappointing in this last year but has done absolutely nothing wrong since and, given the chance to tackle a mile and a half again, could have just too much for both Rewilding and St Nicholas Abbey.
