Await The Dawn looked seriously good at Chester but faces a different test today.
"The decision to take on Await The Dawn could look silly come 15:10, but with five front-runners in the field and the ground likely to make this a proper test, it makes sense."
With a number of bankers bombing at Royal Ascot yesterday, the Placepot dividend found its way to a whopping £2,568.10 and, with today's card looking even harder to untangle, those that manage to crack it will deserve every penny...
14:30 - Maybe was a very impressive winner on her debut at Naas, where she had subsequent listed winner Teolane well beaten in fourth and, with the promise of much more to come now upped in trip, she has to be included. However, banking on a short-priced Irish filly burnt a few fingers yesterday so we'll avoid falling into the same trap. Richard Hannon has won the Chesham twice in the last three years and his Fort Bastion, like 2009 winner Big Audio, is also a maiden. That said, Fort Bastion recorded a Timeform rating comfortably in excess of what Big Audio had achieved in two goes prior to him winning the race and, with more to come, Fort Bastion is also in.
15:05 - The decision to take on Await The Dawn could look silly come 15:10, but with five front-runners in the field and the ground likely to make this a proper test, it makes sense. Drunken Sailor stays further, has won on soft ground and put up a career-best last time so makes the shortlist, along with Harris Tweed, who has similar attributes and should be thereabouts as long as he doesn't get sucked into going too fast as one who likes to race handily.
15:45 - The absence of Delegator tells us that we should definitely be looking for those proven in soft ground. Not only has Bewitched done nearly all of her winning on ground softer than good, but she is one from one at the track and produced a taking display when brushing aside subsequent St James's Palace second Zoffany over 7f on her return. This will be tougher but she has a high cruising speed and an impressive turn of foot. The ability to stay further will also stand her in good stead. Dalghar was second over course and distance in the Diadem (good to soft) last year and shaped encouragingly in the Duke of York on his reappearance.
16:25 - We'll know a lot more about any draw bias after the Golden Jubilee, but on the face of it, it's advisable to concentrate on those who are potentially ahead of their handicap marks. Hoof It could well be one such horse but a strongly-run 6f on soft ground isn't sure to suit him and he's taken on with Deacon Blues, who goes on the ground and looked unlucky over course and distance on his return, and stable-companion Mac's Power, who posted a career-best on at Newbury last time and is entered in the July Cup. The Hughie Morrison yard are flying (4 winners from their last 7 runners ) so Pastoral Player gets a chance to prove he handles ground this soft, too.
17:00 - Modun looks likely to be all the rage for the Duke of Edinburgh but it's curious that not only he, but half-brothers Patkai and Saptapadi (both by Indian Ridge and out of a Sadler's Wells mare) as well, have all raced primarily on ground firmer than good, and, for all that Sir Michael Stoute's gelding is progressive, ground worries and the fact that he's up 15 lb in the handicap since winning last time are enough to take him on. With a trip quandary hanging over Taqleed, Richard Hills has chosen the ultra-consistent, and soft-ground proven, Sharayeen and we should take the hint. We'll also go with Averroes, who stays, has form on the ground and is from a yard in terrific form (Clive Cox, two winners at Goodwood yesterday).
17:35 - Eighteen runners for the last, but it's easy to put a line through more than half of them due to lack of ability or lack of stamina or a lack of both. Just about the only one who ticks all the right boxes is Elyaadi, a stamina-laden mare who arguably should have won the Ascot Stakes at the meeting a year ago, and she looks to have been campaigned with this race in mind, including a fitness-building run over hurdles last month.
