Goodwood: Jehanbux can get Hannon and Hughes off to a flyer at the West Sussex course

Goodwood: Jehanbux can get Hannon and Hughes off to a flyer at the West Sussex course

"Jehanbux receives a generous weight-for-age allowance and even at this early stage of the season it's enough to make him of serious interest in a moderate-looking handicap.."

A fine effort from Simon Baker yesterday included a twenty-three length winner at Sedgefield advised at [4.5]. What more could you ask for? A couple more today perhaps as we visit Chester and Goodwood.

The Chester May meeting wouldn't be the same without Barry Hills having a winner and Captain Bertie (13.45) is fancied to score for the legendary trainer in today's opening handicap. A course and distance winner drawn in stall 1, Captain Bertie ticks plenty of the right boxes before you even consider his excellent form which includes a narrow defeat at last year's Glorious Goodwood to Free Handicap winner Pausanias. Captain Bertie returned with a fine effort behind Tazahum in the Esher Cup, and is due to go up 8 lb for that in the near future. If in the same form today he will take all the beating.

Connections have been patient with the twice-raced Pekan Star (17.10), who, having been the subject of positive reports, could be the type to really thrive in 2011. The form of his win at Nottingham in October has worked out really well and it would be no surprise to see him develop into a good middle-distance handicapper for Roger Varian. An opening mark of 85 could underestimate him and he's fancied to make a winning handicap debut in the last at Chester.

At Goodwood, Jehanbux (14.05) makes plenty of appeal in the first race. Richard Hannon's three-year-old receives a generous weight-for-age allowance and even at this early stage of the season it's enough to make him of serious interest in a moderate-looking handicap. Jehanbux brings some strong two-year-old form to the table and could be open to more improvement this year. With trip and ground fine, he's fancied to get Richard Hughes off the mark at Goodwood at the first attempt in 2011. The jockey had a remarkable time of things at the track in 2010, recording seventeen winners (including nine at Glorious Goodwood) and ten seconds from eighty rides.
