"I'd recommend backing Sand Skier win and place."
Martin Dixon selects a pair of promising midweek afternoon bets...
Apparently it's Derby Trial day at Epsom. In reality, though, there'll be few classic clues to be gleaned from the five-runner minor event at 15:10 and it doesn't appeal as a great betting race, either. There is, however, some really competitive handicaps that are much better-quality fare than on an average Wednesday and I think it's worth having a crack at a couple of them at least.
At 15:45, there's a 10f handicap that traditionally provides a good field and this latest renewal is no different. Nevertheless, Beachfire looks short enough at the top of the betting and I'll be backing Sand Skier to confirm the promise of a few of his runs in 2010. Sand Skier proved consistent last year without managing to get his head in front, but he bumped into some improvers along the way and was unfortunate not to win at Newmarket in early-October, beaten a short head after being carried across the track. That proved to be strong form and Mark Johnston's gelding is off the exact same mark this afternoon over what I believe is his ideal trip. I'd recommend backing him win and place.
We'll skip back to the first race (14:00) for my next best bet of the afternoon, with Archers Road in the opening sprint handicap. At first glance, it looks a minefield but I'm not sure how many of the field are in form and/or will be ready for the day at this early stage of the season and David Barron's representative is one that I expect to be fully wound up. He won first-time out last season for starters, from a 2lb higher mark than he's off today, and the yard as a whole are bang in form. The booking of Ryan Moore also catches the eye and I can see things panning out ideally for Archers Road from a high draw with a likely strong pace. Again, he's worth backing win and place.
