Johnny Murtagh rides The Real Article in the opener at Clonmel
"Western Bound is still a maiden over hurdles but has improved since joining Gordon Elliott this season and shaped like his turn wasn't far away when a close third to his better fancied stable companion Trendelenburg at Navan last time."
There are plenty of runners to wade through on Tipperary Cup day at Clonmel but we think we have found three winners....
Johnny Murtagh was successful on both of his rides for Edward O'Grady back in 2006 and the pair team up for the first time since in the opener at Clonmel (17:00) with The Real Article . A deeply impressive winner of all three of starts in bumpers, The Real Article readily won a maiden hurdle at Listowel in September and travelled well for a long way when third to Last Instalment at Limerick on his return earlier this month. He has already shown form well in advance of what is usually required to win a race of this type and is a confident choice.
Western Bound (18:35) is still a maiden over hurdles but has improved since joining Gordon Elliott this season and shaped like his turn wasn't far away when a close third to his better fancied stable companion Trendelenburg at Navan last time. The drop back to two and a half miles won't inconvenience him, especially as he should be sharpened up by first-time blinkers, and he will be hard to beat in a race choc-full of exposed types.
Jessica Harrington has her team firing on all cylinders at the moment and she looks to have a good chance of landing the bumper (20:05) courtesy of Clouded Thoughts. This son of Definite Article appears to be getting better with racing and possibly had his stamina stretched when fourth to Gullinbursti over a quarter of a mile further than this at Cork last time. Two miles on a sound surface should play to his strengths and he may not need to improve much to open his account.
