Southwell is the venue for all three of Tuesday's SmartPlays.

Southwell is the venue for all three of Tuesday's SmartPlays.

"Mottley Crewe really is in excellent form at present..."

Here's hoping that a small amount of Nicky Henderson's good fortune from Monday can rub off on our three selections at Southwell today...

Mottley Crewe (13:10) really is in excellent form at present, making all when beating Bailadeira at Catterick at the end of October prior to a solid second to Crimson Cloud at this track. He beat the rest of the field comfortably that day, pulling clear with the winner, and a reproduction of that effort will make this course-and-distance winner difficult to beat here.

Take Cover (14:10) rewarded connections patience when belatedly making a winning racecourse debut, at this track over seven furlongs, when beating Enchanted Dream by a length and a half. He went on to record a comfortable success over course-and-distance a week ago, easily reeling in the front-runner and appearing to have plenty left at the finish. He does carry a 6 lb penalty for that success but that does not look anywhere near enough to stop him, as he is a potentially useful sort, and a bold bid to land the hat-trick is expected.

Waahej (15:10) is another one in terrific form at present, and can make amends for an unfortunate defeat at Kempton last time. He was left with far too much to do upon entering the straight, and did really well to get as close as he did in finishing third. He is 4 lb higher today, but you cannot beat a horse in form, and Waahej can defy that rise to gain a fifth career success.

Timeform SmartPlays

Back Mottley Crewe @ [5.7] in the 13:10 at Southwell
Back Take Cover @ [2.04] in the 14:10 at Southwell
Back Waahej @ [5.6] in the 15:10 at Southwell

Some very interesting novice chasers line up at Kempton today, namely the Nicky Henderson-trained pair Chablais and Mossley, but they are rightfully odds-on and, therefore, these three make more appeal at the current prices....

With no recommended lays across the two meetings in Britain today, this afternoon's three SmartPlays are all backs......

The highlight of the day is undoubtedly the return of Long Run, Kauto Star and friends in a dazzling renewal of the Betfair Chase at Haydock but, for those who feel that race is one to watch rather than bet on, these three SmartPlays may well provide financial reward elsewhere....
