Today's best bet is north of the border

"A reproduction of See The Legend’s last-time form will put her right in the mix today, while the improvement that should be forthcoming from the step up in trip makes her the one to beat."

In his career as a fair handicapper on the Flat with Bryan Smart, Sanctuary's highest BHA rating was 81, which alone suggests that an opening hurdles mark of 92 should prove well within his scope starting out in handicaps for Michael Scudamore at Wincanton this afternoon (16:20). In truth, Sanctuary has shaped with a fair bit more promise than the bare results suggest in novice hurdles, not having anything like a hard race on his two most recent starts, and it would be no surprise whatsoever to see him improve now, fitted with first-time cheekpieces. He was a ten-furlong horse on the Flat, so Wincanton's sharp two-mile course should prove ideal, while the quickish ground is a further positive. David Pipe's Senses has a similar profile and is the obvious danger, but he is much shorter in the betting and often displayed temperament during his Flat career. At the prices, Sanctuary looks the value call.

See The Legend made her handicap debut over hurdles a month ago at Ayr and showed much improved form to finish third behind a pair of unexposed ones, both of whom have gone well since. See The Legend came from further back than the two she pulled clear with on that occasion, very much shaping as if she would be suited by going further than two miles. That's no surprise bearing in mind that she's a sister to the yard's fairly useful jumper Storymaker, who is best around two and a half miles (has won at 27f) and who himself took off once tackling handicaps. A reproduction of See The Legend's last-time form will put her right in the mix today, while the improvement that should be forthcoming from the step up in trip makes her the one to beat, and well worth an interest at [4.2].

There haven't been many trainers in better form this all-weather season than Brian Baugh, whose steady trickle of winners since December represents easily his best spell of success for some time. His only runner today is Duar Mapel in the last at Wolverhampton (20:50) and he has sound claims going for his first win in Britain on just his third start for the yard. Duar Mapel was a fair winner in France in 2009 and gave notice that he's ready to get back to something like that level when third at Wolverhampton last time, doing well to finish so close after getting checked turning in. A mark of 54 is well within his compass judged on that effort, and if he takes a step back towards his best he should prove hard to beat.
