Can we find a winner in the opener at Warwick?

Today's 80/20 is Pontyates in the 14:20 at Warwick.

This gelding finished sixth to Our Father at Chepstow in January. He was sent off at huge odds but kept on well in the closing stages behind the easy winner. I think he is open to improvement and should run well at a fair price. At present he is trading at [9.4] on the exchange.

Nick is hoping for a wonder of a ride from his selection this afternoon......

It's a case of play it again, Sam, as Nick backs Monday's 80/20 to put in an improved performance......

Nick believes today's 80/20 has the know-how for a big run...

Today's 80/20 is Tarn Hows in the 15:10 at Warwick. This gelding finished second to Merry King at Leicester last month. He was in the lead approaching the final flight but could not hold the determined challenge from the winner and was put in his place on the run-in. I think he brings a decent level of form to the table and should run well at a fair price. At present he is trading at [6.2] on the exchange.

"I don’t think the ground will be a problem for Ballesteros - he has gone nicely on the grass at home on the few times we have tried him. I think he is one to follow."

Bea Remembered: She has her first run for us and she is a nice filly who has been working well in the spring. Like most of ours, she should come on for the run and the handicapper doesn't look to have taken any chances with a mark of 95. This should give us a better idea of what we can expect going forward.

Manassas: He's a really solid handicapper who loves these big park courses. He isn't a big horse, but he does seem to enjoy galloping tracks. He has dropped down the weights a bit and usually gives his running in these races - there is a theory that he is best fresh but I am not sure about that. He had a few problems as a young horse but he is over them now and is a lot more durable.

St Barths: He's a nice horse but it is no secret that most of our 2yos improve for a run and I don't think he will be any exception. Whatever he does here, it will be once he is upped to 6f, or even 7f, that he will show us what he can do.

Ballesteros: This is a very nice colt who has shown up very well on the gallops. He's a sharp type and even allowing for the fact that most of ours need a run, I would think he had to go well here. He's by Tomba but I don't think the ground will be a problem - he has gone nicely on the grass at home on the few times we have tried him. I think he is one to follow.

Onyx Of Arabia: He is one who I would want some rain for. They have had a bit of rain and more is forecast, but he definitely doesn't want it too quick. He is a bit of a character and you never quite know what to expect - it depends on his mood.

Mortitia: I thought she ran a nice race in the Fred Darling on her reappearance and that run should bring her on. We are trying to pick up some Black Type for her and I would think she would give a good account. The drop in trip shouldn't be a problem - this looked like being a weaker event than the 7f Group 3 at Lingfield - and I would be hopeful that she could finish in the frame.

Mia Madonna: I am looking forward to her returning to action and she looks to have a cracking chance here. She was disappointing when she ran at Pontefract last autumn but her earlier form was pretty good and this step up in trip will suit (she is by Motivator). It doesn't look the strongest maiden and she has plenty in her favour.

Horseradish: He is in very good form ahead of the Victoria Cup and I couldn't be more pleased with his preparation. He has been trained for the race ever since he won at Doncaster at the end of last year and I think a mark of 100 is still within his range.
It probably isn't ideal being drawn on an extreme wing but saying that, I feel that the ground is sometimes better on that part of the track. He is equally effective at 6f or 7f and everything looks in place for a big run.

Freckenham: She is ideally suited by a turning track and relishes fast ground, so conditions should suit her well. I was a bit frustrated that the handicapper put her up 4lb for winning an ordinary maiden but she has bits of form that give her a chance and the extra furlong shouldn't be a problem around here.

Long Run won the Kingmaker at Warwick last year, but who will rule on Saturday?

Sunday February 6

Fontwell and Musselburgh both stage NH fixtures on Sunday, and the better of the two meetings is the one at the latter track, which hosts both the Scottish Triumph Hurdle and the Scottish County Hurdle.

The day's best action is over in Ireland at Leopardstown, where there are a total of four Grade 1s on the card. The most prestigious of them is the Hennessy Gold Cup over three miles, which looks notably competitive in the absence of Ireland's top staying chaser Pandorama, the likes of Joncol, Cooldine and The Listener all looking to hold chances. The three other Grade 1s are the Spring Juvenile Hurdle, the Deloitte Novice Hurdle and the Dr P. J. Moriarty Novice Chase.

Monday February 7

Lingfield and Ayr are the venues for Monday's jumping, while Wolverhampton will be the scene scene of seven races on the all-weather.

Tuesday February 8

Three meetings for punters to get stuck into on Tuesday - over jumps at Market Rasen and Sedgefield and on the all-weather at Southwell.

Wednesday February 9

Carlisle and Ludlow host the two NH meetings in Britain on Wednesday. There are also all-weather fixtures at Lingfield and Kempton, while jumping also returns to Ireland with eight races at Punchestown.

Thursday February 10

There are four meetings scheduled for Britain on Thursday - two apiece over jumps (Huntingdon, Taunton) and on the all-weather (Kempton, Southwell). There is also a NH card at Thurles in Ireland.

Friday February 11

Bangor, Kempton and Musselburgh all host NH cards on Friday, while the day's all-weather action takes place at Southwell in the afternoon and Wolverhampton in the evening.

Saturday February 12

Saturday's big NH fixture takes place at Newbury where the highlight is one of the season's premier two-mile handicap hurdles, the totesport Trophy. Alan King and Nicky Henderson currently provide the front four in the market, which is headed by the latter's French import Solix. There are also a couple of Grade 2 steeplechases at Newbury, namely the three-mile Aon and the two-mile Game Spirit, both of which are often used as final preps for Festival hopefuls.

The day's other two jumps meetings take place at Ayr and Warwick, the latter hosting the Grade 2 Kingmaker Novices' Chase, won last year by Long Run, while there is all-weather racing at both Lingfield and Wolverhampton.

There's a good quality card at Leopardstown in Ireland, but Musselburgh also features a couple of really interesting contests, including the Scottish Triumph Hurdle......

Timeform run the rule over the next week's racing, which starts with an all-star card at Leopardstown on Sunday and ends with another at Newbury on Saturday......

The Irish Hennessy meeting at Leopardstown is the last stepping stone before the Cheltenham Festival for many leading ante-post fancies from across the Irish Sea and the four Grade 1 events on the card all promise to be high-class renewals....
