Against All Odds: Hannover to suffer hangover in Sweden

"Mirko Slomka’s Hannover team have conceded 13 goals in eight Bundesliga matches, and they have shipped seven in their last three on the road."

Lay Hannover against Helsingborgs @ 1.875/6

Hannover are odds-on for their trip to Sweden tonight against Helsingborgs in the Europa League but Paul Robinson thinks they could struggle to take all three points.

Helsingborgs have just a single point from their opening pair of matches in this competition. They lost 1-0 away to Levante before being held at home by Dutch side, FC Twente, after conceding two late goals.

It's still all to play for the reigning Allsvenskan champions and they are back to form following five straight defeats during August. Since that period, caretaker manager, Åge Hareide, has steadied the ship and The Reds have lost just one of their last eight, which was the aforementioned defeat in Spain.

Hannover top Group L with four points thanks to a draw in Holland with FC Twente and an impressive 2-1 win over Levante, where they were reduced to 10 men from the ninth minute. That red card does mean that recipient, Karim Haggui, will be suspended though, and that will weaken an already suspect backline.

Mirko Slomka's Hannover team have conceded 13 goals in eight Bundesliga matches, and they have shipped seven in their last three on the road. Their away form must be a worry for their supporters as it's now no win in four and three defeats in a row.

I can see plenty of goals in this one, but the value appears to be in laying Hannover. Their recent away form doesn't warrant a quote of 1.875/6 and that's why I'm making them my lay of the day.

Home And Away: Slask won't last in Sweden

Jonno Turner has two Champions League tips for you today, backing Swedish and Turkish sides to flourish...

There were more British Olympic champions yesterday - and I'm losing count of our medal haul now. I've never been good with maths though. There are three things I'm useless at: directions, faces, names and numbers.

I'll stop at nothing to avoid using negative numbers. But I've tried to learn. In fact, I bought three Maths For Dummies books yesterday; they were £10 each or three for £35 - bargain.

We're focussing on the Champions League qualifiers today, starting with Helsingborgs, who welcome Slask Wroclaw to the Olympia Stadium, looking to build upon a 3-0 first-leg victory.

The hosts were head and shoulders above their domestic opponents last year and, fresh from scooping the Allsvenskan title, look to have carried that momentum and confidence over into their European campaign.

After that comprehensive win in a tricky trip to Poland, they now have an opportunity to make it four wins in five at home, with much of the pressure removed.

Clean sheets in the last two shows that Helsingborgs' defence is as strong as last year - but they are no slouches up the other end either, smashed nine goals in their last four games in front of their fans.

Visitors Slask Wroclaw have lost two of their last three fixtures, and know that it would take a victory of monumental proportions to overturn their three-goal deficit this afternoon.

Just three wins in nine on the road - albeit in their last few outings - shows the size of the task that lies ahead, and I'm surprised that their hosts are at such long odds. Yes, this tie is in the bag, but the Swedes will be keen to maintain momentum, and I can't see them risking anything in this encounter.

Bet 1: Helsingborgs (HOME) to win @ 1.738/11

Over to Romania now, as FC Vaslui host Turkish giants Fenerbahce in a finely poised tie. The first leg finished 1-1 and the Romanians will be delighted with that result.

Away trips to Turkey are notoriously tricky, and for the hosts to still be in with a chance of making the next round of this competition is a real coup for them.

But just one win in four - and a 3-0 loss to rivals CFR Cluj on Saturday - indicates that they are slightly out of form, and I think that could tell as they face a Fener side full of quality and confidence.

Fenerbahce have lost only one match in 17 and, importantly, have lost just once in seven on their travels. They have won four of their last five on the road and scored 11 in the process, and will be looking to stamp their authority on this game from the outset.

They will be disappointed that they weren't able to get more of a foothold in this tie during the first leg, but I expect that to motivate them here - and they're excellent value, too.

Bet 2: Fenerbahce (AWAY) to win @ 2.3211/8

Euro 2012 Betting: Sweden v Moldova

Euro 2012 RSS / Tobias Gourlay / 28 March 2011 / Leave a Comment

Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Johan Elmander must work through their poor form together

Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Johan Elmander must work through their poor form together

"Sweden coach Erik Hamren could be without the entire back four that started his country’s previous home qualifier"

Tobias Gourlay explains why it might be a good time for Moldova to be visiting Sweden

Sweden coach Erik Hamren will be without the entire back four that started his country's previous home qualifier, if fullback Mikael Lustig does not recover from a swollen knee in time.

Can Moldova take advantage? The market thinks not and makes the hosts firm favourites, even though the visitors have scored in four competitive away games in a row - their best run as an independent nation.

Moldova have, however, lost 32/41 away qualifiers in their relatively short history. Gabi Balint's current side might be slightly better than their predecessors, but the coach has only 18 fit players to take to Solna, including just three strikers.

Hamren took charge of Sweden in 2009 and promised attacking football. At full strength and in better form, the team would be good enough to win by two clear goals, as they have done in 16/19 home wins since the turn of the millennium, and Sweden -1.5 on the Asian Handicap would be the bet at [1.8].

As it is, Zlatan Ibrahimovic is in his least productive spell as an AC Milan player, scoring once in his last nine starts, while Johan Elmander has the same return from 11 recent starts for Bolton Wanderers.

With their best defenders absent and their best forwards out of form, perhaps a small lay of Sweden at [1.2]?

Top Stat: Moldova have scored in each of their last four competitive away matches
Best Bet: Lay Sweden @ [1.2]
