Hungerford Stakes Result: Kirby produces lethal ride on Force

Although his rivals were closing fast at the line, Lethal Force held Strong Suit by a neck, with Alanza a length and a half further back in third.

Lethal Force, who was sent off at a Betfair SP of 44, won the Group 2 Hungerford Stakes, having been given an enterprising front-running ride by jockey Adam Kirby...

Kirby soon grabbed the lead on Clive Cox's three-year-old, who was blinkered for the first time. Although his rivals were closing fast at the line, Lethal Force held Strong Suit by a neck, with Alanza a length and a half further back in third.

Kirby said: "He's quite a smart horse. There didn't seem to be that much speed in the race and he lengthened really well. He's battled well."

Trainer Clive Cox said: "The horses are in great form. He's got a lot of class and when they cut him a bit of slack halfway I was concerned for them, rather than ourselves."

Earlier on the card, Mount Athos booked his ticket to Australia for the Melbourne Cup with a clear-cut success in the Geoffrey Freer Stakes.

Luca Cumani's progressive five-year-old landed his first Group race, outpointing Brown Panther, with Modun a further position back in third. He had been well supported to do so, eventually going off at a Betfair SP of 2.39.

His trainer said: "I talked to Ryan Moore, who seemed very happy and thought the horse picked up nicely. The plan is to go for the Melbourne Cup. After this, I would think he will go up to 53.5 kilograms, which is the same as one of other hopes for the race, Quest For Peace."
