Canford Cliffs holds off Goldikova in the Queen Anne
Canford Cliffs gained his third straight Royal Ascot win as he beat defending champion Goldikova in the Queen Anne Stakes....
In an eventful betting heat, Goildikova was sent off the [2.3] favourite on Betfair to defend her crown, but when it came down to it Canford Cliffs (BSP of 2.47], who had won the Coventry and the St James's Palace Stakes in the two previous years, proved too strong in this year's curtain raiser.
Both travelled strongly as Cape Blanco and Goldikova's pacemaker battled it out early, but Richard Hughes always had the French mare in his sights (Canford surprisingly touched [6.4] in-running) as they made thier way down the outside and the Richard Hannon-trained colt kept finding when asked, holding off his rival who hit a low of [1.51].
